14 Jan 1888

Henry Lyman, a “cowboy” from Dodge City, Kansas, was found dead four miles northeast of

Quincy with a bullet hole through his head.

Dick Oliver of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, aged 16 years, accidentally shot himself, and was buried 2 Jan 1888.

Widow Sarah Cook died in Elizabethtown during an abortion performed by her pastor, the Rev. Dr. G.W. Stevens.

John T. Braden, of Sparta, was thrown by a runaway team and died. (See also 21 Jan 1888, issue.)

Gabriel Back, son of Samuel Back of Mound City, Pulaski County, fell through the ice while skating and drowned.

Mary Lockard Swafford, wife of James H. Swafford, died 29 Dec 1887, in Pomona Ridge of double

pneumonia, aged 40 years. She left a husband and seven children, the youngest being 6.

 

21 Jan 1888

Martha McCaffrey, wife of John McCaffrey died 17 Jan 1888, in Cobden, and was buried in Cobden

Cemetery. (See also 28 Jan 1888, issue.)

Wiley Lippard died Friday (13 Jan 1888?) in Anna of apoplexy, aged 50 years.

Miss Brim, an “outcast,” died at the house of ill repute near the depot in Jonesboro last Sunday

(15 Jan 1888), and buried by the county in Jonesboro Cemetery on Monday (16 Jan 1888).

 

28 Jan 1888

Mother of Tom Henley of Cobden died in Shelbyville, Tennessee, 14 Jan 1888

William Gunn was accidentally shot by Charley Biggs while hunting Sunday (22 Jan 1888) in Cobden,

And was buried in Biggs burying ground

Frank Brown, son of M.V. Brown of five miles southeast of Anna, died in San Bernardino, California, of

pneumonia, aged 28 years, and was buried in San Bernardino.

“Old Nigger Billy” died in Hodges Park, claimed to be 104 years. “He was about the only gentleman

of color that ever stopped long in Jonesboro.”

 

4 Feb 1888

F.A. Boyt, coroner of Johnson County, was killed or committed suicide.

A young man died in Springville at George Gordon’s of typhoid pneumonia.

Amey Miller, wife of the Rev. E. Miller, died 15 Jan 1888, in Sedgewickville, Missouri, of consumption.

She was born 28 Nov 1848, in Alexander County, Illinois, daughter of Daniel and Catharine Mowery. She left a husband and five children.

Infant child of the Rev. D. Faris died Saturday (28 Jan 1888) in Anna, aged 1 week.

G.W. Hall died at his residence on Hall’s Hill west of Jonesboro Wednesday (1 Feb 1888) aged about 76

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

F. Mize, of near Jonesboro, died of pneumonia, and was buried Thursday (2 Feb 1888).

 

11 Feb 1888

Mrs. Frank Noel, of Makanda, died of erysipelas and tonsillitis.

Clarence A. Smith, son of G.W. and Dora C. Smith, died of pneumonia, and was buried in Evergreen

(Makanda) Cemetery.

Uncle Johnny Spence was buried in Evergreen (Makanda) Cemetery this week.

Hon. John M. Cochran, born 29 Jan 1810, near Princeton, Kentucky, died 24 Jan 1888, in Ava, Jackson

County, Illinois, from injuries from a fall on the ice. He came to Illinois with his father when a small boy, moved to St. Louis, Missouri, returned to Union County. He was elected to the legislature three times and took the census in Union County in 1850. His wife died 23 years ago. He left three children, Dr. W.J. Cochran, L.B. Cochran, and Mrs. Ollie Yocum of Carbondale, Jackson County.

Elizabeth “Grandma” Dillow died 8 Feb 1888, of lung trouble, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

She was born in Northeast Tennessee near Blue Ridge in 1818, the daughter of John and ____ (Meisenheimer) Light. John Light was a soldier in the War of 1812 and related some near escapes of his life. She married Charles Dillow, a wagon maker. She left two children, L.A. Dillow and Mrs. D.C. Hurst, three sisters and one brother. Three sisters and two brothers preceded her in death. Susanna Hileman, daughter of John Miller, died 7 Feb 1888, at the residence of her son, Jacob M.

Hileman, on the old Peter Hileman homestead, five miles south of Jonesboro, aged 87 years. She was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, 19 Feb18(00). She moved from North Carolina to Illinois with her parents in 1819 and married Peter Hileman in 1820. She had 12 children. Three children and her husband preceded her in death. Three sons were in the Civil War; one, Peter F. Hileman, died in 1863. She left four sons, John Hileman, Jacob M. Hileman, William R. Hileman, and Samuel Hileman; and one brother, Solomon Miller. 18 Feb1888

Mother of Mrs. Michael (mother-in-law of Jerome F. Rendleman) of Makanda died in Indiana, aged 80

years.

Willis Penrod died Monday (13 Feb 1888) in Makanda of typhoid and pneumonia. He left a wife and

four children.

Catharine Spence, daughter of John Knupp, died 10 Feb 1888, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

She left four brothers and three sisters.

Mrs. S. Corzine died 14 Feb 1888, in Dongola, aged 40 years.

Jerry Brown died Monday (13 Feb 1888) of pneumonia, six miles southeast of Anna, aged about 40

years. He left a wife and four small children.

E.A. Marks died Tuesday (14 Feb 1888) at his home in St. Louis, Missouri, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery. He left a widow, Annie Marks, the daughter of C. Kirkpatrick of Anna.

 

25 Feb 1888

Infant child of W.P. Stokes died 12 Feb 1888, in Springville of loss of blood.

Infant daughter of John T.S. and Ellen Linn, died 17 Feb 1888 of catarrhal pneumonia.

Samuel Davis died 17 Feb 1888. He was born 17 Dec 1809, in Rowan County, North Carolina, and came

to Illinois in 1829. He married Miss Brown. He had two sons and two daughters. He married 2nd a daughter of John Light and had three children, all living.

Magdelina Drexler, daughter of Rosina and John Drexler, died 18 Feb 1888, aged 1 year, 2 months, 15

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Luella Lence, wife of Dr. W.C. Lence, second daughter of Judge John A. Mulkey, died 19 Feb 1888, of

consumption, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born 10 Jan 1852, in DuQuoin and married about 1872. She left two daughters and one son, aged 7.

Andrew Dobbins, of Marissa, died Friday (17 Feb 1888) at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Dave

McNamee in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was a Civil War soldier in Co. A,

80th.

William Cobb was killed in explosion in Fairfield at Peter Taffe’s wagon shop Thursday (23 Feb 1888?).

George Dahn died Tuesday last week (21 Feb 1888?) of fever from a hand wound received

washing glasses in a bar in Commercial Hotel in Red Bud.

Charles Bellma of Montrose, Missouri, was killed by a Missouri Pacific train Tuesday last week (21 Feb

1888) in Sedalia.

Mrs. J.R. Hogg died 24 Feb 1888, of pneumonia, aged about 45 years, and was buried in Cedar Grove

Cemetery.

 

10 Mar 1888

John R. Irvin, father of Hon. A.H. Irvin postmaster in Cairo, Alexander County, was buried in Jonesboro

Cemetery 21 years ago or more, and disinterred and taken to Kansas by relatives.

Cyrus A. Miles died 1 Jan 1888, in New Orleans, and buried in Cobden Cemetery last Friday (2 Mar

1888?).

Moses Goodman died at his residence Saturday (3 Mar 1888) of paralytic stroke and erysipelas, aged 81

years, 6 months, 5 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born in North Carolina, and resided in Illinois over 50 years. He moved from Anna to his farm 15 years ago. He left five children: Dr. M.M. Goodman of Jonesboro, D.W. Goodman and Charles H. Goodman of Anna, Dr. T.H. Goodman of Cobden, and Mrs. Dr. W.H. Damon of Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County.

 

17 Mar 1888

Houck child died in Cover Block in Anna Friday last (9 Mar 1888), and was buried by county. The other

four family members were also sick.

Wife and infant daughter of Edwin Brown of Friendship, daughter of Mrs. M. Emerson, died Friday last

(9 Mar 1888), and was buried in Campground Cemetery.


24 Mar 1888

Florence Karraker, daughter of D.W. Karraker, died 18 Mar 1888, aged 3 months, 8 days.

Simon Aden, of Dongola, died 18 Mar 1888, of consumption, aged 52 years. He left five motherless

children. (See also 14 Apr 1888, issue.)

Peter Lentz, of Dongola, died 19 Mar 1888, aged 63 years. He left a wife and five children.

 

31 Mar 1888

Adam Spear was killed last month by James Mounce at Monticello.

Infant child of Frank Ferguson of Springville died of whooping cough and measles.

“Grandma” Susanna Poole died 22 Mar 1888, of paralytic stroke or heart disease. She was born 14 Feb

1817, in Rowan County, North Carolina. She married John Poole and moved to Illinois when 21. She had 76 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She left four brothers, one sister, five sons (Jacob H. Poole, George W. Poole, Edward Poole, John Poole, and A.W. Poole, the last two of Arkansas), and three daughters (Mrs. L.A. Dillow, Mrs. Alfred Lingle and Mrs. Peter Dillow). She was a member of the German Reformed Church.

W.H. Stephens of Wetaug, Pulaski County, railroad brakeman, was killed Saturday (24 Mar 1888) on the

Illinois Central Railroad between Dongola and Wetaug. He left a family.

Rebecca Gartner, wife of Stuart G. Gartner of Wheatland, died 19 Mar 1888, of typhoid fever,

and was buried in Lindsey Cemetery. She left a husband and five children.

 

7 Apr 1888

Charles Jenkins, employee of Illinois Central Railroad, was run over by a train in North Cairo a

few days ago.

Mrs. Mentie Hoover died 21 Mar 1888, aged 56 years, 17 days. She left four sons and one daughter.

Pat O’Brien, a giant, formerly of Jonesboro, died in February 1888, in an insane asylum in London,

England. He left a wife and children, who were born in Jonesboro.

Eliza Lence, daughter of the late John Lence, died 5 Apr 1888, aged 25 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.

Nannie M. Roundtree, wife of J.F. Roundtree, died 2 Apr 1888, at her residence in Anna, aged

30 years, 3 months, 15 days.

 

14 Apr 1888

William Wineland was shot 27 Mar 1888, in Girard by the 13-year-old adopted son of John

Dietz, who had been killed by Wineland last fall.

 Mrs. Caldwell, mother of Mrs. I.H. Lawrence, died 10 Apr 1888, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

 

21 Apr 1888

William Rendleman died 16 Apr 1888. She was born 28 May 1829, in Jonesboro, and married Anna

Hileman on 17 Feb 1853. He was baptized in March 1863. He left six children.

William Lowery died 19 Apr 1888, aged 83 years.

Anthony Tiepel, of Alton, Madison County, was killed Easter Sunday 1888, in a hunting accident.

 

5 May 1888:

Child of W. Whitman, of Mound City, Pulaski County, was buried in Dongola Wednesday (2 May

1888).

Frank Watkins, son-in-law of Henry Flaugh, died last week.

 

12 May 1888:

The funeral of Walter Phillips was in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Tuesday (1 May 1888?).

Mrs. Johnson, sister of P.M. Hagler, died the first of the week.

 

26 May 1888:

Nannie Keith, wife of James M. Keith, died 20 May 1888, at her residence two miles north of Alto Pass,

And was buried in Dutch Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery. She left five daughters, one a few days old.

Hattie A. Eaton, oldest daughter of Ben W. and Fannie Eaton, died at her residence last week.

Infant daughter of W. Wilson died 19 May 1888, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

Mrs. M. Hunsaker, of Johnson County, died 15 May 1888.

 

9 Jun 1888:

James Guthrie erected a fine marble monument to the memory of his father, mother and wife at

the family burying ground near section forty-five.

 

16 Jun 1888:

Infant child of M.C. Scully of Cobden died Friday night last week (8 Jun 1888).

 

23 Jun 1888:

William Wallace Toler, son of J.I. Toler of Anna, died Friday last week (15 Jun 1888) aged 7 months.

 

30 Jun 1888:

Comfort Edgar Butler died 25 Jun 1888, at his residence in Anna, aged nearly 65 years, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery. He left a family.

Charlie Cozby, son of H.P. Cozby of Jonesboro, nephew of Warren Cozby of Cairo, Alexander County,

died 25 Jun 1888, aged 5 years, 3 months, 22 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

 

7 Jul 1888:

Charles Davis, son of Fernando Davis, nephew of George W. Otrich and C.L. Otrich, aged 16

years, thrown from a mule on the farm six miles south of Anna. His funeral was Friday (6 Jul 1889) at Red Jacket Church.

 

14 Jul 1888:

John Ballard, of a few miles east of Dongola, was killed in a wagon accident in Dongola, aged

about 55 years. He left a wife and a large family.

John Reischauer, son of Robert Reischauer of south of Jonesboro, drowned last Sunday (8 Jul

1888) in Dutch Creek near W.T. Thornton’s west of Jonesboro, aged 21 years.

 

21 Jul 1888

Leon Lee, son of J.M. Lee of Jonesboro, died 17 Jul 1888, of measles, aged 5 years, 2 months, 10 days,

And was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Helen A. Schuchardt, youngest daughter of Lt. Gov. John Dougherty, deceased, and widow of Dr.

George W. Schuchardt, died 17 Jul 1888, in San Antonio, Texas, of cancer. She was born in

Jonesboro. Four children and one of her brothers, John J. Dougherty, were with her when she died.

 

28 Jul 1888

Infant son of William and Jennie McCoubrey of Humboldt, Tennessee, died 20 Jul 1888, on the

farm of Andrew McCoubrey near Alto Pass. They were visiting.

Nancy Menees, wife of William Menees, died Monday (23 Jul 1888), and was buried in Jonesboro

Cemetery.

 

4 Aug 1888

Abigail Marrbery, sister of John Grear, died 1 Aug 1888, at her residence in Jonesboro of

rheumatism of the heart, aged 65 years.

 

11 Aug 1888

The funeral of Mrs. David Lentz was at Mt. Pisgah Church on Wednesday (8 Aug 1888).

Susan A. Henley, wife of W.S. Henley, died 7 Aug 1888, aged 60 years, 7 months, 7 days.

Son of J.M. Brown died 31 Jul 1888, in Carbondale, Jackson County, aged 2 years, 6 months.

 

18 Aug 1888:

Betty Stewart died 13 Aug 1888, at the residence of her father, John Stewart, near Success, and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery.

 

1 Sep 1888:

John Walters died 23 Aug 1888, of consumption at the residence of his mother-in-law, Mrs. E.J.

Burke of Alto Pass, aged about 35 years, and was buried in Murphysboro.

Son of Isaac Davis of north of Anna, died Sunday (26 Aug 1888) of congestive chills, aged 8 years.

Peter F. Simmerman died 25 Aug 1888, at the residence of his daughter, Mary A. Hunsaker, in

Anna, aged 65 years, 7 months, 2 days, and was buried in Williams Cemetery, five miles east of Anna.

Christina Ury, widow of Martin Ury, died 23 Aug 1888, aged 74 years, 4 months, 10 days. She was born

near Concord, North Carolina, 13 Apr 1814, and came to Union County with her parents, Michael and Susanna Craver on 25 Dec 1827. She married Martin Ury on 18 Oct 1838, and became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church 50 years ago. She had one daughter who died in infancy and two sons, the oldest lives in California and the youngest, Jefferson L. Ury lives in Jonesboro. Her funeral was preached at St. John’s Church 28 Oct 1888 (See also 27 Oct 1888, issue).

 

8 Sep 1888:

Wade Hampton Cook, son of Samuel Cook of two miles south of Jonesboro, died Friday last

week (31 Aug 1888) when he fell from a rolling log, aged about 8 years.

 

15 Sep 1888:

Mrs. Dr. F.S. Dodds died last Tuesday (11 Sep 1888).

 

22 Sep 1888:

Small child of A.B. Arey of Dongola died 17 Sep 1888.

Maude Finley, daughter of T.J. and Virginia Finley, died 12 Sep 1888, in Wheatland, and was buried in

The family cemetery. She was born 22 Apr 1884.

E.B. Stoddard died in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, of consumption, aged 38 years, 8 months, 9 days. He

was born in New York.

 

29 Sep 1888:

Mr. Faulkner, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, engineer on M & O. Railroad, was killed in a train

wreck near Alto Pass on Thursday (27 Sep 1888).

Arthur J. Russell, son of A.J. and Emma Russell, died 21 Sep 1888, aged 1 year, 17 days, and was buried

in Cobden Cemetery.

 

6 Oct 1888:

Henry Meisenheimer died five miles east of Dongola, aged 69 years, 2 months, 18 days. He was born in

Union County and married twice. He left one son, a number of grandchildren, one brother, and three sisters.

Infant son of Philip S. Lingle died in Springville.

Mathias Mair died of bilious intermittent fever and blood poisoning. He came to America when a boy

with his parents. He married in Missouri. He left a wife, one son and two daughters, all grown.

 

13 Oct 1888:

George Graves died Sunday (7 Oct 1888) after being thrown from a wagon on Saturday a few miles from

Jonesboro when going home drunk.

Robert Rice died 11 Oct 1888, in Jonesboro, aged 55 years, 11 months, 18 days, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born near Bresian, Germany, and learned the butcher’s trade from his father. He spent three years in the Prussian Army, went to Russia, and came to America in 1859 and located in Cape Girardeau. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1860 and was honorably discharged in 1864, having lost his hearing. He returned to Germany for five months and then returned to Cape Girardeau. He married in 1869 and moved to Dongola. He was Catholic. He left a widow, two sons, and one daughter. (See also 20 Oct 1888, issue.)

Mrs. Hester E. Jones, wife of W.O. Jones of Cobden, died 6 Oct 1888, at the residence of her father, six

miles east of Elkville, of malarial fever, and was buried in Osage Cemetery, one mile from her parents’ home.

Jimmie Copeland, son of William Copeland, died 6 Oct 1888, aged 1 year.

 

20 Oct 1888:

Dr. J.G. Grambery died 12 Oct 1888, of throat cancer at his residence one mile east of Cobden, aged

over 50 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He served as a surgeon in the army in Holland. He left a wife and two little daughters.

Child of Jack Dale Jr. died 13 Oct 1888, aged 2 years.

Albert M. Smith’s monument was erected in Lyerle Cemetery on Hutchinson’s Creek last Wednesday

(17 Oct 1888) by J.L. Ury.

 

27 Oct 1888:

Lillie A. Vancil, daughter of Lewis and Piety Vancil of Cobden, died 19 Oct 1888, of consumption, aged

17 years, 9 months, 7 days.

Grace Vancil, daughter of Lewis and Piety Vancil of Cobden, died 22 Oct 1888, of consumption, aged 16

years, 3 months, 3 days. The death is also recorded as 21 Oct 1888.

Uncle John D. Fly died Tuesday (23 Oct 1888) of Bright’s disease at his residence four miles southeast of

Makanda, aged 76 years. His father died at age 84. He came to Union County from Wayne County in 1844. He left a wife of 57 years, two sons (one was Marcus S. Fly), one daughter, and four brothers.

Grandma Rimer died 21 Oct 1888. She was born 25 Nov 1808, in Rowan County, North Carolina, and

married Henry Heilig at aged 14. She had several children, four of whom survived her, Clarissa C. widow of Moses A. Goodman, Mrs. Adam Eddleman, M.N. Heilig, and Crawford Heilig. She married 2nd Jacob Rimer. They had one child, a daughter who died in infancy. In 1845 they moved to Mississippi and in 1848 to Illinois. She was a Lutheran.

Jefferson Adams, son of Mack Adams, died 24 Oct 1888, aged 8-10 years.

Mrs. Angeline Whitlock, mother of George T. and Edward W. Whitlock, died in Cairo, Alexander

County, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery last Thursday (18 Oct 1888?)

 

3 Nov 1888:

Mrs. Minnie nee Cox Little, wife of James A. Little, daughter of Mrs. Spann of Alto Pass, died

25 Oct 1888, in Dongola, aged 24 years, 4 months, 11 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She married 10 months ago. She left a daughter born a few days ago. (See also 10 Nov 1888, issue.)

Mrs. Rosa Schlitter died 30 Oct 1888, in Cobden, aged 55 years, 8 months, 8 days, and was buried in the

Catholic cemetery in Cobden.

 

10 Nov 1888:

Thomas Hagler, second son of P.M. Hagler, drowned Friday (9 Nov 1888) crossing the Muddy River,

aged 19 years, and was buried in Lamer burying ground.

A “colored child” died in a log house fire in Idlewood, Alexander County, near Warriner’s Mill, aged 18

months.

W.M. Chester died Wednesday (7 Nov 1888) at his residence west of Jonesboro of hemorrhage of the

lungs, aged about 54 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born in Union County.

 

17 Nov 1888:

Dr. W.C. Dunning, of Cairo, Alexander County, died Friday last week (9 Nov 1888) in Cairo.

John Burgenburger, of Evansville died of wounds.

Catharine Metz, wife of Joseph Metz, died 13 Nov 1888, at her residence one mile southeast of Cobden,

aged 56 years, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery.

Uncle Johnny Thornton died last Saturday (10 Nov 1888) at the residence of the late Alex Chapman,

quite old, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery.

 

24 Nov 1888:

Mrs. Polly Lee died Wednesday last week in Centralia, aged 79 years. She came down the Alleghaney

and Ohio rivers to Shawneetown in 1817, and remained there until 1822.

Charles Laswell, of Odin, committed suicide Wednesday.

John Conger Townsend died 15 Nov 1888, near Cobden, aged 13 years, 2 months, 26 days. He was born

19 Aug 1875.

 

1 Dec 1888:

George W. Bridenbecker, of Meridian Township, Clinton County, shot and killed his wife and

their infant child in the arms of his sister-in-law on 10 Nov 1888.

Infant daughter of T.A. Safriet died 23 Nov 1888, aged 2 months.

Infant daughter of Jasper Carlock died 24 Nov 1888, aged 13 months.

Mrs. Jacob Corzine died 28 Nov 1888, aged 60 years.

 

8 Dec 1888:

Lucy Harrison Fitch died 6 Dec 1888, at the residence of her son James N. Fitch, aged 62 years, 4

months, 27 days. She was born in Randolph, P___ County, Ohio, 5 Jul 1826. She married Anson Fitch on 19 May 1847. Two children survive, James N. Fitch born 24 Feb 1848, in Tarleton, Ohio, and George H. Fitch born 3 Feb 1850, in Tarleton, Ohio. Anson died in Nevada City in 1857 after which she moved to Carbondale, Jackson.

Calvin Hinsley died Friday last week (30 Nov 1888) at his residence two miles west of Jonesboro. He

left a small family.

Mary Bean, widow of Thomas Bean, died 13 Nov 1888, at the residence of her son, G.W. Bean,

in Preston Precinct, aged 57 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mrs. Charlotte Ates died 10 Dec 1888, in Anna, aged 31 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mrs. James Walker of Cairo, Alexander County, formerly of Dongola, died Friday last week (7 Dec

1888) of pneumonia in Missouri while visiting her brothers, and was buried in Dongola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Turner Lively died 10 Dec 1888, at the residence of David Mowery two miles southeast of Mill

Creek, aged 30 years.

 

22 Dec 1888:

Robert Reischauer died 14 Dec 1888, at his residence three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 47 years,

10 months. He left a wife and seven children.

Willey Smart, an only child, died last Thursday (27 Dec 1888)

Joseph Seibird, an old settler in Bloomington, died recently.

Oliver P. Storm died 6 Jan 1889, aged 61 years, 10 months, 4 days, and was buried in Jonesboro

Cemetery. He was born in Tennessee. He left a widow, three sons and several daughters.

Paul Douglas, formerly of Jonesboro, died 1 Jan 1889, of paralysis of glottis, aged 41 years, 11 months,

16 days, and was buried in Murphysboro cemetery. He left a wife and one daughter.

Oliver C. Blevins died 5 Jan 1889, aged 50 years, and was buried in Tripp graveyard west of Jonesboro.

He came to Jonesboro from Tennessee. He left a widow and child.

Miss Hannah Brazenell died 8 Jan 1889, of heart disease, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

W.P. Stokes of Anna, formerly of Lick Creek Precinct, died. G.A.R. graveside services were last

Sunday (6 Jan 1889).

James Bell died 5 Jan 1889, at his residence in Cobden. He was born in 1819 in Mansfield, Pennsylvania,

And located in Ullin, Pulaski County, in 1855 and moved to Cobden in 1865.

Mrs. Phoebe Hills died 23 Dec 1888, on the train 50 miles from Los Angeles, California, of

apoplexy, aged 70 years. She was formerly the matronette at Southern Illinois Insane Asylum in Anna. She was going to visit her daughter, Mrs. James Colby.


19 Jan 1889:

Charles Aspar, a Swiss from Moro, Macon County, was found dead in Wood River a few days ago.

Benjamin Vandree was killed near Altament by a falling limb while coon hunting.

John W. Davis, son of David Davis deceased, died Sunday (13 Jan 1889) at his residence six

miles southeast of Anna of consumption, aged about 35 years, and was buried in Campground Cemetery. His wife died two years ago of consumption. He left an aged mother, one daughter and a large family of brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Nova Clem, daughter of H.A. Jones of Friendship, died Monday (14 Jan 1889) at her parents’

residence, and was buried in Big Creek Cemetery. She married a little over a year ago. She left a 2-week-old baby.

Henry Trees, son of Maston Trees, died.

Elizabeth Loeb died 28 Dec 1888, near Cobden, aged 63 years, 1 months, 21 days, and was buried in the

Evangelical Association (Ebenezer) cemetery three and a half miles south of Jonesboro. She was born in Namiely, near Cablenz, Germany, and married in 1855 Caspar Loeb, deceased. They had five children, of whom three survived her. She came to America and lived in Covington, Kentucky, for three years before coming to Union County. She was Catholic, but united with the Evangelical Association of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Bolte died Saturday (19 Jan 1889) of injuries received on railroad track.

Hannah Miranda Hanna died 12 Jan 1889, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Ware in

Jonesboro. She was born 17 May 1808, in Madison County, New York, and moved with her parents to Switzerland County, Indiana, about 1814. At age 19 she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and married Benjamin F. Guild of Rhode Island, who died 14 months after their marriage. She returned to Indiana where her first child died in infancy. She moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and married William Hanna, and then moved to Louisville, Kentucky. In 1836 they moved to Union County and settled two miles from Preston on Mississippi River. He died in 1843 and left a 5-year-old daughter. In 1853 she sold the farm and moved to Jonesboro. She was a Presbyterian. She left one daughter and three grandchildren. Mrs. M.G. Atterbury died at her residence west of Atlanta, Logan County, of lockjaw.

John B. McIntyre, of Newman, Douglas County, died at his residence, aged 45 years.

J.W. English, originally from Bloomington, was killed in a fight in Cimarron, Kansas.

Young man named Hurt was accidentally shot and killed last Monday (21 Jan 1889?) in Villa Ridge,

Pulaski County.

Martha A. Moberly, wife of Col. W.E. Moberly, died 16 Jan 1889, at her residence two miles north of

Cobden, aged 67 years, and was buried in home cemetery.

Elder G.W. Giles died last Sunday (20 Jan 1889) near Elco, Alexander County, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery. He was a Mason.

Daniel Blevel, of Mountain Glen, died Thursday last week (17 Jan 1889), aged 75 years.


2 Feb 1889:

Son of Henry Fearnside of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, died after drinking carbolic.

William Dunham was found Wednesday last week (23 Jan 1889?) floating in Breese Lake near Vence.

Sadie Belle Davis died in Chester Prison. She was serving a sentence for attempted murder of

Curly Maxwell in Randolph County.


9 Feb 1889:

James Brady, of Bloomington, drowned in a ditch, aged 70 years.

Mrs. David Rowand, formerly of Anna, died in Cairo, Alexander County, last Friday (1 Feb 1889),

and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left a husband and two children, Mrs. Georgia Ward and Will D. Rowand.

Mrs. John Dooley died 4 Feb 1889, of consumption. She left a husband and child.

Mrs. John Schmidt, of Springville, died of typhoid pneumonia, and was buried in the cemetery near the

church on Mr. Kohlener’s farm. She was born in Germany. She left three children. One son lived in Michigan.

Lula McGinnis, daughter of D.W. McGinnis of Springville, died 3 Feb 1889, of congestive chills, aged 6

years, 10 months, 3 days.


16 Feb 1889:

Daughter of Sam Duvall died of burns Friday (15 Feb 1889).

John Rendleman, of Anna, died 10 Feb 1889, aged 62 years, 2 months, 21 days, and was buried in

Evergreen Cemetery. He was born two miles northwest of Jonesboro 19 Nov 1826, and married in April 1849 Mary Kimmel. They had two sons and five daughters. She died February 1877 and one son died in youth. He married August 1879 Mrs. Elizabeth Hess Craver. In 1852 he moved to a log cabin two miles east of Makanda. He was a Mason and a member of Stonefort Baptist Church. J.B. Roberts was his son-in-law. (See also 23 Mar 1889, issue.)

James Mullen died 5 Feb 1889, at his residence in North Alton, aged 50 years.

Mrs. W.F. Davis, of Mt. Vernon, died 31 Jan 1889, of stroke of paralysis.

John Long, son of Michael Long of Highland, Madison County, died 12 Jan 1889, in a horse accident.

The funeral of Nellie Peelar, daughter of F.E. Peelar, was preached in Wetaug, Pulaski County on

Sunday (17 Feb 1889). The 2 Mar 1889, issue states, “Miss Nellie Peelar of Wetaug visited

friends here (Dongola) on Saturday and looked far from being dead. We were misinformed.”

Ella nee Thompson Woodworth died 17 Feb 1889, of consumption, and was buried in I.O.O.F.

Cemetery in Dongola. She was born in Menonunee, Dunn County, Wisconsin, 20 Apr 1852. In 1870 she moved to Waterville, Minnesota, with her parents. She married D.H. Woodworth on 8 Jun 1873, and in 1878 moved to Cairo, Alexander County. She left a father, mother, two brothers, a husband, and five children.

Mrs. Book of Preston died 30 Jan 1889, of consumption.

J.M.C. Cavaness of Cobden died Monday (18 Feb 1889). He left a widow, Matilda Cavaness.

Sarah Ardery Smith, wife of J.T. Smith, died Wednesday (27 Feb 1889) at her residence in Makanda of

catarrhal pneumonia and typhoid fever, aged 40 years, 7 months, 2 days. She left a husband and five sons, ages 5 to 9.

Mrs. C.M. Abbott, daughter of Dr. Chamness of Williamson County, died 22 Feb 1889, of rheumatic

pericardetis. She was born in 1844 and married at aged 21 to John W. Bryant. They had two living children. She married J. Henry Abbott and moved to Makanda eight years ago. She was a Baptist. She left a husband, four children, a mother, three brothers, and four sisters.

P. Bird died at his residence one and a half miles north of Cobden of bronchial trouble.

John Kearney died 26 Feb 1889, of consumption, at his residence in Jonesboro, aged 49 years, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born in Ireland and was a Catholic.


9 Mar 1889:

Mrs. Charles Crowell, daughter of John K. Tripp, died Friday (8 Mar 1889) at her residence west

of Jonesboro of consumption.

Crawford Trees died in Dallas County, Texas. He was born in Union County and went to Texas when a

boy. He and Anna Kimmel, also born in Union County, and a sister of George W. Kimmel, were the first couple married in Dallas County. He left a wife, six sons and four daughters.

Infant son of W.J. Ford died 1 Mar 1889, and was buried in Dongola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Mrs. George Little, formerly of Dongola, died in Plumb Creek, Nebraska, last week. She left a husband.


16 Mar 1889:

R.W. Townsend died in Washington, D.C., and was buried in Shawneetown, Gallatin County.

John Morton died 6 Mar 1889, at his residence in Alto Pass, and was buried in Dutch Ridge Cemetery.

He was a member of G.A.R.

Mary Hess Rendleman, widow of Henry Rendleman, died 12 Mar 1889, at the residence of her

son-in-law, S.H. Spann, aged 78 years, 7 months, 17 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She was born 23 Aug 1810, in Rowan County, North Carolina, and came to Union County in 1818 with her parents. She married Henry Rendleman on 15 Feb 1829. He died 16 Mar 1874. They had 16 children, seven dying in infancy and seven sons and two daughters survived her. She left 41 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the German Reformed Church and then joined the Congregational Church. (See also 23 Mar 1889, issue.)

Edward Willett died in New York a few weeks ago. He was born in Green County, New York, in 1837.

In 1855 he moved to Cairo, Alexander County and published the Cairo Times. He married in August 1857 Izora Wilkinson, daughter of Will C. and Martha Wilkinson, and a sister of Mrs. L.G. Faxon. He was arrested by Gen. Grant in Cairo during the Civil War for disloyal sentiments expressed in letters published in a St. Louis newspaper. After the war he resided in Cobden. He moved to Kentucky, St. Louis, and then New York. He left one daughter, Mrs. Henry Aveling.

Henry Oglesby died after being struck on the head by a plank by 15-year-old Carl Mitchell at a church

meeting in Harrisburg, Saline County.

Carrie Mesler, wife of W.P. Mesler of Dongola, died of paralysis at Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

He was born in Union County. He was German Reformed. He left a wife and family.

left a husband, four children, and an aged mother.

Child of Widow Butcher living on Krysher’s place, four miles from Makanda, died of scarlet fever.

J. Herman Oliver, eldest child and only son of L.C. Oliver died 18 Mar 1889, of scarlet fever, aged 10

years, 4 months, 21 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Mary Oliver, only daughter of L.C. Oliver, died Thursday (21 Mar 1889) of scarlet fever, aged 6 years,

M.T. Earle, wife of Parker Earle of Cobden, died 23 or 24 Mar 1889, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She

left two sons and one daughter. (See also 13 Apr 1889, issue.)

G.W. Kerr died 26 Mar 1889, at the residence of his son-in-law, Quincy Province, and was buried in

Toledo Church Cemetery.

Mary Williams, wife of Morris L. Williams, and infant daughter, died 25 Mar 1889, aged nearly

19 years, and were buried in the new cemetery near Alto Pass.

Pleasant Northern died 17 Mar 1889, at his residence in Saratoga, aged 73 years.

Infant of Henry Sienter died Saturday, aged 8 months. He crawled into the fireplace and pulled a

kettle of boiling water on himself.

Mrs. J.C. Jeans, of Lick Creek, died 2 Mar 1889, aged about 35 years, and was buried in Ebenezer

Cemetery.

Infant of J.S. Rimer died 4 Apr 1889, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.


20 Apr 1889

Mrs. Adaline P. Montgomery, one of the oldest citizens of Douglas County, died at her residence

in Camargo a few nights ago, aged 86 years.

Chauncey Ladd died two nights ago of paralysis at his residence in Quincy, aged 63 years. He was born

in New York and lived in Quincy 30 years. He left three children, Mrs. Winfield Russell, Chauncey Ladd Jr., and Charles P. Ladd, all of St. Louis.

Effie Filler, daughter of W.A. Filler of Arkansas City, Kansas, was thrown from a cab in Chicago a few

days ago and died, aged 10 years.

Joan Lampe, saloon keeper in Quincy, Adams County, shot himself a few nights ago while drunk.

Mr. McCollum’s funeral was in Thebes, Alexander County, Sunday (14 Apr 1889).

Mrs. John Jones died 12 Apr 1889, at her residence eight miles east of Dongola, aged 35 years.

Mrs. Margaret Townes died 25 Mar 1889, at the residence of her grandson, W.S. Cantrell in

Boston, aged 82 years, 8 months.

Minnie F. Strong, wife of F.A. Strong, died 16 Apr 1889, of apoplexy at her residence in Cobden, and

was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She left a husband, and two sons, one an infant.


27 Apr 1889:

B.R. Abbott was found dead in his office in Bloomington, aged 60 years.

Rebecca Custer died 23 Apr 1889, aged 69 years.

Johanna F. Nance died 18 Apr 1889, in Jonesboro, aged 59 years, 10 months, 27 days. She was born 20

May 1829, near Nashville, Tennessee. In 1854 she settled in Jonesboro, in 1858 moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and in 1864 returned to Jonesboro. She married Robert Rushing, who died 11 Oct 1872. She married 2nd L. Brown who died in 1880. She married in 1883 Richard Nash. She left two sons, R.W. Rushing and M.F. Rushing, two sisters and three brothers. She was a Methodist.


4 May 1889:

Elijah M. Raines died 25 Apr 1889, at his residence in Waukegan.

Grandma Mansfield, of Thebes, Alexander County, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. S.E.

Asher, last Tuesday (30 Apr 1889) , aged 88 years.

Mrs. Josephine Misenhimer, wife of Dallas Misenhimer of Carbondale, Jackson County, daughter of

John A. Brown of south of Jonesboro, died 27 Apr 1889, aged 28 years, 5 months, 5 days. She married 10 years ago. She left two children.


11 May 1889:

Elizabeth Kohler died 4 May 1889, aged 43 years, and was buried in Catholic cemetery in Cobden. She

left a husband and six small children.

James Massey, engineer at Mesler’s Mill in Cobden, died 2 May 1889, in St. Louis, following surgery on

his liver, aged 47 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Left a wife.


18 May 1889:

Peter Schneider drowned 7 May 1889, at Pulltight (or Pulaski) Landing, Monroe County, in a fight with

Larry McDonel (or McDonald). (See also 25 May 1889, issue.)

Mrs. Maggie Watkins, deserted by her husband, committed suicide in Cairo, Alexander County.


25 May 1889:

E.W. Jordon was murdered at Thompsonville in October 1888 by Charles Williams of Franklin County.

Dan Taylor died 9 May 1889, after being run over by a train on 7 May 1889.

Sarah A. Turner, wife of P.B. Turner, died 22 May 1889, in Jonesboro, aged 29 years, 7 months, 5 days.

She left five children.

Mrs. M.Z. Stewart died 11 May 1889, at Hodges Park, Alexander County, and was buried in Thebes

Cemetery.

Ella Deming, eldest daughter of John T. Deming of the northeast part of Makanda Township, died last

Sunday (19 May 1889).

Alice George, daughter of Enoc and Paralle George, died at her residence three miles east of Dongola,

aged 16 years, and was buried in Karraker graveyard.


8 Jun 1889:

Grace Reeves, daughter of B.W. Reeves of Alto Pass, died 2 Jun 1889, aged 1 years, 10 months.

Jeremiah “Jerry” Rymer died Monday (3 Jun 1889) of bilious colic. He was born in 1820 in North

Carolina. He was a teamster during the Mexican War and acarpenter. He left a wife, Susan Rymer, one son, and five daughters. (See also 15 Jun 1889, issue.)

Daniel Norvel, of one mile south of Anna, aged 17 years, was killed in a hunting accident near Rhodes

School near Alto Pass by Lamb, aged 17 years, of Cairo, Alexander County, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.

Cyrus Schick died in the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, flood last Friday (31 May 1889). He left two sons,

Charles and Robert Schick, and two brothers in Illinois, Thomas M. Schick of Anna and Nathan Schick of Metropolis, Massac County.

Eliza Stinson, sister of Capt. W.B. Stinson of Anna, died in the Johnstown, Pennsylvania, flood last

Friday (31 May 1889). Her body was found in Ninevah, 15 miles from Johnstown.


15 Jun 1889

William Parker, of New Haven, died after falling from a trapeze.

John J. Keitner, of Kaolin, only son of Robert Keitner deceased, was run over by a train one mile

south of Mountain Glen 7 Jun 1889, aged about 29 years. He left a wife, three children, and a dear old mother.

Tharesia Schneider, wife of Charley Schneider, died 11 Jun 1889, in Jonesboro, aged 53 years, 7

months, 25 days. She resided in Jonesboro 40 years. She had three daughters, Mary deceased, Mrs. Walter Ury, and Mrs. William Weiss; and three sons, Frank Schneider, Charles A. Schneider, and William Schneider.


22 Jun 1889

Mrs. Margaret Ann Adams, wife of George Adams of Quincy, Adams County, died a few days ago, aged

74 years. She lived in Illinois 67 years.

Mabel Beasley, daughter of C.C. Beasley, died 12 Jun 1889, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in

Dongola.

Kezire Karraker, wife of Dennis Karraker, died 16 Jun 1889, at her residence four miles east of

Dongola, aged 60 years, and was buried in Friendship Cemetery. She was born in North Carolina and came to Illinois 40 years ago.

Elizabeth S. Billings, widow of Judge H. W. Billings, of Alton, Madison County, died 1 Jun 1889, aged

65 years. She had resided in Alton since 1843.

Dr. H.W. Kemp died 2 Jun 1889, in Monroe County, one and a half miles west of Hecker, aged

76 years. He had resided in Monroe County 46 years.

Jesse Lentz, son of James Lentz, of four miles east of Anna, died of epilepsy, aged 19 years.

Loyd Spar died 17 Jun 1889, at the residence of his son-in-law, Sylvester E. Fowler, of Bright’s

disease, aged 63 years, and was buried in Kansas. He had arrived Saturday from Cherryvale, Kansas, to visit his daughter. He was a sergeant in Co. E, 13th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War.

Dr. B.P. Lightford died last week in Makanda of apoplexy.

Mrs. Burnette’s funeral was in Pulaski, Pulaski County.


29 Jun 1889

Frank Winkeljohn was assassinated 7 Jun 1889, two miles east of Carlinville in Clinton County.

Mrs. John Davidson died 8 Jun 1889, in Hagerstown, Fayette County, of lockjaw after she ran a

nail through her hand.

Ernest Cruse, only son of Alexander Cruse of Jonesboro, committed suicide with a pistol in front of the

girl he claimed to love, aged about 21 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.


6 Jul 1889

Mrs. Mary Dobler, eldest daughter of Mrs. C. Roberts, niece of A.H. Roberts of Murphysboro, Jackson

County, died Friday last week (28 Jun 1889) after surgery in St. Louis in May 1889, aged 30 years, 4 months, 3 days. Left a husband, two children, a mother, sisters, and brothers. (See also 1 Jun 1889, issue.)

Sidnie Olive Lippard, daughter of T.C. and S.J. Lippard, died 1 Jul 1889, in Anna, aged 2 years, 11

months.

Robert Forehan, infant son of William Forehan, died Sunday (30 Jun 1889) of congestion of the brain,

And was buried in Casper Cemetery.

Mrs. Fellows, formerly of Cobden, was not dead as reported in the Cobden Sentinel. She had

divorced her husband and was working as a lawyer in Chicago.


13 Jul 1889:

Catherine “Katie” (Miller) McMullen died 26 Jun 1889, at her residence in Buncomb, Johnson County,

aged 69 years, 5 months, 22 days. She was born in Washington, Guernsey County, Ohio, in 1820, and married Alexander Miller in 1836. She joined the Presbyterian church in 1837, and came to Illinois in 1858. She had 14 children, 11 of whom survived her, ages 27 to 57. Left 45 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

George Miller, cousin of Mrs. Robert Giles of Ashley, died Sunday after being thrown from a runaway

horse in Tamaroa, aged 17 years.

John Baillie, miner at Sunfield, was killed 25 Jun 1889, near DuQuoin by falling slate.

Mary Marlow, who lived with Mr. Kline near Omega, was struck by lightning while taking clothes

off a wire line, and died, aged 18 years.

John W. Connor died 1 Jul 1889, aged 66 years. He was born in Union County and moved from near

Jonesboro to Williamson County four years ago. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and a Baptist. He left a wife, four sons and two daughters.

Susan C. Spence, wife of George Spence, died Friday (5 Jul 1889), and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

She left a husband and five daughters.

 Infant child of William Rawlins was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.


20 Jul 1889:

Mrs. Minerva Williams, mother of Mrs. June, formerly of Cobden, died 1 Jul 1889, in Cairo, Alexander

County, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Meta Blumenthal, daughter of Samuel Blumenthal, died 9 Jul 1889, of cholera infantum, aged 13 years,

12 days, and was buried in St. Louis.

Infant son of E.A. Strong died 14 Jul 1889, aged 4 months.

John T. Ellis, of Toppingtown, died 17 Jul 1889, of cancer of face, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Green Peeler died on his birthday 12 Jul 1889, at his residence three miles west of Dongola, aged 56

years. He was born in North Carolina and came to Illinois when a young man. He left a wife.

Leon Costigan, infant son of James Costigan, died Tuesday (16 Jul 1889) at Savoy Springs, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.

Daughter of Squire Craig of Lick Creek, who burned to death sometime ago, committed suicide.

Mrs. L. White died 22 Jul 1889, at Ullin, Pulaski County, of pneumonia, aged about 50 years, and was

buried at Union School House near Dongola.

Mary A. Cross was killed by lightning 28 Jun 1889, near Pinckneyville, Perry County. Her husband was

William Wise and Robert Bedberry drowned 8 Jul 1889, in the river at Alton. Wise’s stepfather

drowned the week previous.

John F. Sivia died 8 Jul 1889, at his residence in Stokes Precinct, aged 64 years, 10 months, 23 days,

And was buried in Campground Cemetery. He was born in Union County two miles from where he died. He was a Mexican War veteran in Capt. Hacker’s company. He married Elizabeth Stokes on 15 Apr 1847, and had four sons and seven daughters; six children survived him. (See also 3 Aug 1889, issue.)

Frederick J. Stebbins died 15 Jul 1889, in Upper Alton.

John Conners died 18 Jul 1889, in Mountain Glen, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Villa

Ridge, Pulaski County.


10 Aug 1889:

Lucinda (Thompson) McCallen died 4 Aug 1889, in Dongola, aged 76 years, 5 months, 1 day, and was

buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. She was born in Orange County, North Carolina, 3 Mar 1813, and moved with parents when 4 to Middle Tennessee. Her parents died when she was 5. She married on 20 Aug 1829, James B. McCallen. In 1843 they moved to Union County. In 1851 she moved to Rhode Island and in 1854 to Pennsylvania. They moved back to Tennessee and to Union County in 1864. She had seven sons and one daughter, four of whom survivedher: Francis M. McCallen of ____ Hill, Missouri, James McCallen of Sioux Falls, Dakota Territory, William M. McCallen of Senaca, Missouri, Freeman W. McCallen of Metropolis. She also left nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


24 Aug 1889:

Isaac Wagoner died 1 Aug 1889, in Cerro Gordo after being thrown from a load of hay. He was a

Dunkard.

Harriett Goodman, wife of T.B. Goodman, daughter of Adam Buck, died 20 Aug 1889, at her residence

in Cobden, aged 30 years, 8 months, 22 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She left a husband and family.

Lena Eddleman died 16 Aug 1889, at the residence of Jacob Spangler, aged 26 years, 10 months, 29

days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

Jennie Row, daughter of Adam and Josephine Row of Makanda, died 12 Aug 1889, of acute dysentery.

Polly Lyerle, daughter of Christian Miller, died 14 Aug 1889, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

She was born in 1818 or 1819, moved from Rowan County, North Carolina, and to Union County in 1816 with her parents. She married in 1839 Christopher Lyerle. She had nine children, five of whom survived her. All were married and living near homestead except Mrs. Arthur Brown of Willard’s Landing. She was a member St. John’s Church.

Widow Robetna Kirkpatrick died 18 Aug 1889, aged 54 years, 9 months, 7 days.


31 Aug 1889

Maurice Downer, of Rockford, died Friday night in a fire, aged 70 years. He went to bed with a lit pipe.


7 Sep 1889

Infant of W.D. Hains died 28 Aug 1889, in Springville, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

Thomas Gunn died at his residence two miles north of Cobden of typhoid fever, aged 33 years, and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery. He left a wife and three children.

Mary J. Persefield, wife of John Persefield, died 31 Aug 1889, in Anna, aged 47 years, 26 days.

Alvin B. Coleman died 1 Sep 1889, in Anna, aged 37 years, 2 months, 25 days, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.


14 Sep 1889

John Snyder, Thomas Tygett and Anderson Tygett (sons of Hugh Tygett), John Biggs (son-in-law of

Hugh Tygett), and Isaac Miller “colored” died Monday (9 Sep 1889) on the John Snyder farm, a half mile east of Carbondale, Jackson County, in an explosion of a clover threshing engine.

Henry Sanders died of paralysis of the brain, 82 years, “a really ripe old age,” and was buried last Sunday

(8 Sep 1889) in Evergreen Cemetery, Makanda.

Zella Hunsaker, daughter of Joseph Hunsaker of Cobden, died 5 Sep 1889, aged 3 years.

George Smith was killed 18 Aug 1889, by Ohio & Missouri train in Carlyle.

Sidney B. Ingram, of Jonesboro, died Friday (6 Sep 1889?), and was buried in Anna Cemetery.


21 Sep 1889

Malinda Provo, oldest daughter of John and Mary McIntosh, died 14 Sep 1889, at her residence in

Jonesboro, aged 73 years, 7 months, 14 days. Her parents were Scotch and moved from Tennessee to Jonesboro in 1817. She married Matthew Pipkin, who died many years ago, leaving one son, Andrew J. Pipkin. She married James J. Provo, who died in 1863. Two daughters survive, Ellen and Isabelle. She was a Baptist.

Margarette Fisher, wife of Boswell Fisher of Cobden, died 16 Sep 1889, aged 44 years, and was buried

in the Catholic cemetery.


28 Sep 1889

Margaret Salter, widow of John C. Salter, ex-warden of Alton Prison, died 9 Sep 1889, in Alton,

Madison County.

Elizabeth Salyer, wife of James Salyer, died 15 Sep 1889, at the residence of A.J. Salyer in Alto Pass.

Elizabeth Ray, mother of I.C. Piersol, died Saturday (21 Sep 1889) at her residence in Anna, aged 82

years, and was buried in the Catholic cemetery.


5 Oct 1889

Mrs. S.E. Gallegly died 25 Sep 1889, of general debility at the residence of her son-in-law, Thomas

Hogue, of Lick Creek, aged about 70 years.

Two children of Will Harbaugh of Cobden died the past week of diphtheria.


12 Oct 1889

Frank Henard died 30 Sep 1889, one and a half miles east of Mt. Pleasant, aged 55 years, and was buried

in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Johnson County.

Daughter of Henry Dillow of Dongola died 7 Oct 1889, aged 2 years, 1 month, 9 days, and was buried in

St. John’s Cemetery.

George W. Adams died 6 Oct 1889, at his residence in Jonesboro of typhoid fever. He left a wife and

seven children.

Matthew J. Inscore died Tuesday (8 Oct 1889) in Anna. He was born 2 Feb 1817, in Springfield,

Tennessee, and came to Union County with parents in 1850. He married Amanda J. Haskins, who died 26 Jun 1876. They had four children, Frances E., Stella B., Leet, and Harry W. He married 2nd Mary Brown of Pulaski, Pulaski County.


19 Oct 1889

Minnie Abernathie, oldest daughter of William R. and Mary M. Abernathie, died 15 Oct 1889, of

consumption, aged 24 years, 11 months, 13 days, and was buried in Lamer burying ground. (See also 26 Oct 1889, issue)

Fountain J. Rendleman, youngest child and only son of C.C. and Delia Rendleman, died 2 Oct 1889,

aged 5 years, 15 days.


26 Oct 1889:

Joseph Fecklenberg, of Madison County, was thrown from a mule.

Henley S. Hurst died 17 Aug 1889, at the residence of his daughter in Anna, aged 63 years. He was born

in Clarebourn County, Tennessee, in 1826, and moved to Union County in 1869. His wife died six years later. He left five sons and three daughters. One son, days.C. Hurst, lived in Pulaski County.

Lucinda Lirely, wife of S.P. Lirely, died last Saturday (19 Oct 1889), and was buried in Rowan

Cemetery in Makanda.

 

2 Nov 1889:

Louisa D. Fisher of Dongola died 23 Oct 1889, aged 47 years, 3 months, 21 days, and was buried in Mt.

Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County. She left a husband and four children.

Edward Sutton fell from a building Tuesday last week, aged 30 years. He left a wife and one child in St.

Louis.

Joseph Peter Bohannon, only son of Wiley Bohannon, died 25 Oct 1889, aged 78 years. He was born 2

Sep 1811, in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His father was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, in 1781 and served in the Black Hawk War, and died about 1816 in Virginia. His mother also died in Virginia. His great-grandmother Peterson moved from Spotsylvania to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania about 1700 and her descendants founded Peterson’s Magazine. He moved to Cairo, Alexander County, in 1829, then to Memphis, Tennessee, then to Mississippi. He was a teacher. He married in 1838 in Tennessee, and moved to Jonesboro in 1853 and to Anna in 1856. He had three sons and four daughters, two sons and two daughters survived him: Alonzo D. Bohannon, William H. Bohannon, and Susan P. wife of A.W. Robinson all of Anna, and L.R. wife of Capt John Blackburn of Ava.

Asa Parker of Makanda died Friday (25 Oct 1889) of asthema of typhoid fever, aged 28 years, 5 months,

27 days. He left a widow, a 9-month-old son, father, mother and three brothers.


9 Nov 1889:

Mrs. J.W. White died 4 Nov 1889, at Ullin, Pulaski County, aged 65 years, and was buried in St. John’s

Cemetery.

Fannie Owens, daughter of R. Owens, died 25 Oct 1889, in Jonesboro, aged 15 years, 10 months.

Daniel Lence died at the old homestead three and a half miles east of Cobden, where he was also born,

aged 50 years, and was buried in Rich Cemetery. He left a wife and three children, William S., Eliza C., and Dora E.

Richard Henderson of Cairo, oldest son of Mrs. Aldridge, died Tuesday (5 Nov 1889), and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.

Peter John’son, old citizen of Cobden, committed suicide 5 Nov 1889, in Mr. Town’s old cow stable in

the east part of Cobden.

Mrs. Elizabeth (Rendleman) Lamer, wife of the Rev. John D. Lamer, died 5 Nov 1889, aged 73 years,

And was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.


16 Nov 1889:

The Rev. Father Herlitz died 14 Nov 1889, in St. Louis. He was born in 1836 in Germany, came to

America 13 years ago, and resided in Anna four years.

Ferdinand F. Cline died 8 Nov 1889, aged about 54 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Mrs. Louisa Bunel, niece of Mr. A. Thomas, died 8 Nov 1889, aged 35 years, and was buried in Cobden

Cemetery.

Jesse Peeler died 11 Nov 1889, in Dongola, aged about 60 years.


23 Nov 1889:

Adam Mowery died 17 Nov 1889, at his residence three miles west of Dongola, aged about 63 years,

and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He came to Union County from North Carolina when about 13. He was a Lutheran.


30 Nov 1889:

Mother of Herman Radotz, a Polander, was accidentally shot Saturday morning at her residence one mile

north of Roach’s Station in Jefferson County, aged 67 years.

Little son of P.H. Henley of Nashville, Illinois, fell into a well and drowned last week, aged 3 years.

Mr. Gher, husband of Mrs. Gher restaurateur in Cobden, died at the asylum last Tuesday (26 Nov 1889),

and was buried in Makanda.

Peter Norrix died 21 Nov 1889, at his residence six miles east of Cobden.


7 Dec 1889:

Two children of John Hess of Anna died of scarletina on Friday (29 Nov 1889) and Saturday (30 Nov

1889). A third child, Roy Hess, is recovering. Mrs. John Hess was a niece of Mrs. Joseph Rendleman.

Mrs. Sarah A. Knott, daughter of William B. Offutt of Cobden, died 22 Nov 1889, and was buried in

Cobden Cemetery.

Jacob Schaffer, old settler in the German settlement south of Jonesboro, brother of Fred Schaffer of

Jonesboro, died 24 Nov 1889, and was buried in Kornthal Cemetery.

John Pickel died Tuesday (3 Dec 1889) of consumption.

Ethel Peeler, daughter of A.L. Peeler, died 1 Dec 1889, aged 3 years, 8 months, and was buried in

Western Cemetery, Johnson County.

Olla Sanders, daughter of Widow Sanders of Mountain Glen, died 20 Nov 1889.


14 Dec 1889:

Adam Wilt died loading a wagon at Waters Pierce Oil Works.

Mrs. Rebecca Evans of Chapin, Morgan County, died.

Henry Temme accidentally shot himself Sunday while hunting three miles west of Okawville.

Eli J. Garrett of Massac County was run over by a wagon.

Dr. Doty of Preston Precinct, Wolf Lake, died last Wednesday (11 Dec 1889).

G.W. Larcy died 9 Dec 1889, in Dongola, aged about 30 years, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He

left a wife and three children.

Infant daughter of E. Hollenback died 6 Dec 1889, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dongola.

Mrs. Jesse Williford died Saturday (7 Dec 1889) of heart disease, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Minnie Rendleman, infant daughter of P.J. and Katie Rendleman, died 8 Dec 1889, at the residence of

D.H. Evett in Cobden of membranous croup, aged 1 years, 10 months. Her funeral was at Stone Fort near Makanda.

Gilbert Aikens, living on the Hartline place south of Cobden, drowned in a small pool of water Tuesday

(10 Dec 1889).


21 Dec 1889:

F.A. Mantzer, son of Frank Mantzer of Cobden, died 13 Dec 1889, of malarial typhoid fever, in Little

Rock, Arkansas, aged 35 years. He left a wife and four children.

Little daughter of Esq. A.J. Roberts of Lick Creek died a few days ago.

Rebecca Stokes, wife of Jonas “Bluff Jones” Stokes, died a few days ago of kidney disease.

Moses Stricker died at his residence 10 miles east of Dongola, aged 80 years, and was buried in family

burying ground.

Mrs. D. Earnhart, daughter of James Anderson, died 16 Dec 1889, of consumption, aged 45 years, 1

month, 29 days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dongola. She left a husband and a son.

James Murray died 14 Dec 1889, at his residence in Hodges Park, Alexander County, aged 57 years, 21

days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Dongola. He was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, and moved with his parents to Chicago when young, then to St. Louis, then to Cairo, then to Western Saratoga, then to Dongola, then to Ullin, then to Mill Creek, then to Dongola, and finally to Hodges Park. He was a blacksmith. He married the daughter of David Miller, deceased, of Jonesboro. They had three children, all of whom died at an early age. He married 2nd the daughter of Louis Meisenheimer, deceased. They had five children, three daughters and one son survive.

Angelo Adams died 11 Nov 1889, aged 83 years. He was lost in the woods near Pine, Missouri, and

when found his body had been partially eaten by wolves.

William G. Campbell died at the residence of his son-in-law, W.H. Walker, in Jonesboro, aged 57 years,

8 months, 24 days.


28 Dec 1889:

Abram Hargrave died in Arkansas several weeks ago. He was a soldier in Capt. Hacker’s company in

the Mexican War and served in the Civil War.
