7 Jan 1938:

John Duschell died 15 Dec 1937, at Mableton, Iowa, aged 79 years.  He was a brother of Mrs. Adam Bernhard.  He left Jonesboro when he was 18 years old.

Jackson L. Hammond died 30 Dec 1837, of carcinoma of the esophagus at home in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was editor and general manager of the Anna Democrat.  He was born 30 Nov 1865, in Washington Co., Md., the son of the Rev. Josiah L. and Mary (Sommers) Hammond.  His father was a Lutheran clergyman.  They came to Illinois in 1868 and his father pastored churches in Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska.  He married on 11 Sep 1894, at Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church, Martha Aden, of Dongola.  They had three children, Grace Elizabeth Hammond, who died 21 Mar 1899, aged 2 years, 9 months; Mary Frances Kent, and Josiah Aden Hammond.  He became editor of the Anna Democrat in 1897.  In 1913 he became clerk for the office of Secretary of State in Springfield.  He returned to Anna on 1 Jul 1917.  He purchased an interest in the Anna Democrat on 16 Jul 1917, and later purchased all the stock.  He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1918 and in 1920.  He left his widow, two children, one brother, Martin Luther Hammond, of Davenport, Iowa; one sister, Mollie Dehaven, of Sioux City, Iowa; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth Lou Hammond, Barbara Elizabeth Kent, and Gaylon Hammond Kent. 

Elza Edwards was killed by his father in a drunken brawl.  He was a WPA worker.  His father, John T. Edwards, was arrested and placed in jail in Harrisburg, Saline County.

14 Jan 1938:

Cornelia "Bit" (Winter) Davis was killed Tuesday (11 Jan 1938), aged 20 years, when the Ford V-8 she was in skidded on the slippery pavement and crashed into a telephone pole in front of John Gettinger's home at East Vienna and Grand streets.  The car was driven by Winstead Tucker, aged 22 years, the son of Isaac Tucker.  Bob Shannon was also killed.  Others in the car were Virginia Lee Simpson, aged 18 years, Dixie Hall, aged 22 years, Eugene Lewis, aged 20 years, the son of Speaker of the House Louie Lewis; Elizabeth Graham, aged 18 years, and Virginia Baggott, aged 23 years, daughter of Harry Baggott.  Her funeral was at the Presbyterian church.  She was the daughter of Mrs. Cornelia Dillow.  She was married three months ago to John Paul Davis, Union County state's attorney.   

Bob Shannon died Wednesday (12 Jan 1938) at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, from injuries received Tuesday night (11 Jan 1938) in an automobile accident, aged 28 years.  His funeral was at the Presbyterian church. 

Anna O. (Schaffer) Butler died 12 Jan 1938, at home in Jonesboro.  Her funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro.  She was born 18 Apr 1870, the daughter of Fredrick Schaffer.  She married 1st Mr. Weston, deceased.  She married on 26 May 1903, Edward Butler.  She left her husband, one son, Cedric C. Weston, of Anna; one sister, Clara Brown, of Jonesboro; one granddaughter, two grandsons, and one great-grandson.  (See also 21 Jan 1938, issue.) 

Philip Monroe Brown died 12 Jan 1938, at Anna State Hospital.  He was born 27 Jan 1854, in Jonesboro, the oldest of five children of George Henry and Anna (Cook) Brown.  He grew up on his father's farm three miles south of Jonesboro.  At the age of 17 he started work at Hehenberger's Mill and continued for 60 years.  Two sisters and one brother, Mary Adeline Miller, Sara Jane Ury, and Henry Willard Brown, preceded him in death.  He lived in Jonesboro in the wretched quarter of an upstairs room on the south side of the square.  He said he had no near relatives, but he left one brother, Joseph W. Brown, of Jonesboro; and many nephews and nieces. (See also 21 Jan 1938, issue.) 

W. T. "Tom" Rogers died at a tavern near Golconda, Pope County, aged 59 years.  He was Pope County sheriff.  Twenty-three youths in the tavern were held for questioning.  The  county commissioners of Pope County closed all taverns in the county except those under police protection in Golconda.  (See also 4 Feb 1938, issue.) 

Child of Calvin Karstedter died in Chaffee, Mo., aged less than 1 year.  He was found dead in bed.  He left his parents, a sister, Sue Ann Karstedter; an uncle, Arthur Karstedter; and a grandmother, Alta Powell, of Treece's Cafe in Anna.   

J. J. Sturgill died 31 Dec 1937, in Baker, Ore.  His wife was Barbara (Lence) Sturgill, and she was born and raised in Jonesboro.  She went to Oregon about 50 years ago.  

21 Jan 1938:

Otis Plott died Friday (14 Jan 1938) at Shreveport, La.  Rufus Plott and John Plott, of Anna drove to Shreveport before his death. 

Charles Ross Holcomb died 10 Jan 1938, of pneumonia, aged 56 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Congregational church at Alto Pass, of which he was a member.  He left two sons, Charles L. Holcomb, of Chicago, and Norman F. Holcomb, of California; one daughter of California, who was unable to attend the funeral;  and one sister, Mrs. John Pigott, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. 

Alfred J. Lingle died 13 Jan 1938, in Tamms, Alexander County, aged 73 years, 2 months, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Reformed church in Tamms..  He was born 13 Nov 1864, two miles northwest of Mill Creek, one of 17 children of Alfred and Elizah Lingle.  He joined St. John's Lutheran Church while young and transferred to the Reformed church in Mill Creek and later to the Reformed Church at Tamms, of which he was deacon.  He married on 12 Apr 1888, Clara Bell Miller.  He moved to Tamms about 25 years ago.  He left three brothers, John C. Lingle, of Wetaug, Pulaski County, George W. Lingle and Charlie E. Lingle, of Jonesboro; five sisters, including, Bertha Goodman, of Jackson, Mo., Lillie Sharp and Josie Mowery, of Jonesboro. 

Alice Huff died Friday (14 Jan 1938) at Beardstown.   

28 Jan 1938:

Jack Jones committed suicide with a shotgun in his bedroom at Centralia, aged 23 years.  He was the son of W. C. Jones.   

I. W. Ellis died.  He was a physician in Jackson County for 47 years.  His funeral was Saturday (22 Jan 1938) in Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He was the father of Mrs. H. A. Mohler.

Mrs. Ruel (Farer) Lingle died at Anna.  She left two children.

John Tripp died at Cobden.  He used to live at Mountain Glen. 

4 Feb 1938:

Claude Brown was killed Monday (31 Jan 1938) north of West Vienna, Johnson County in a two-truck collision, aged 19 years.

Alice Iola Humes died 27 Jan 1938, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Rader, in Jacksonville, aged 73 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Anna Methodist Church.  She was born 23 Feb 1865, in Dongola.  She left four daughters, Mrs. Gordan Peeler and Mrs. Arthur Thompson, of Anna, Mrs. Blance Franz, of Kentleworth, and Mrs. Henry Rader; and several grandchildren.

Vie Wheaton died 30 Jan 1938, at home near Mill Creek, in Meisenheimer Precinct, aged 47 years.  She became a Christian at the age of 25 years.  She left her husband, Harrison Wheaton; and nine children, Lester Wheaton, Fonzy Wheaton, Oland Wheaton, Dorothy Anderson, of Tamms, Alexander County, Fae Wheaton, Alfred Wheaton, Ida Wheaton, Florence Wheaton, and Herman Wheaton, at home.  (See also 25 Feb 1938, issue.)

Mrs. George Brown died last Thursday (27 Jan 1938) at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.  She used to live at Mill Creek, but for the last five years lived at Mounds, Pulaski County.

James Edward Venerable died 28 Jan 1938, at home west of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  He was born 18 Apr 1858, in Tennessee.  His mother died in his infancy and his father was killed in the Civil War.  He came to Union County when 16 years old.  He lived in Cobden with Charles Wright and with Willis Lamer.  He married on 24 Oct 1880,  Nancy Rendleman, of Kaolin, who died 5 Aug 1936.  They had seven children, of whom three died in infancy or early childhood.  Their first home was on the Walter Green farm east of Cobden, but in 1883 they moved to the old Leming farm on the road to Alto Pass.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cobden for over 53 years, the Chapter at Anna, the Knights Templar at Carbondale, the Consistory at East St. Louis and the Shrine at East St. Louis.  He left a daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. 

Robert Pryor was murdered in October 1937 in St. Clair County, aged 42 years.  He was a worker at Rocky Point Quarry and was murdered by a fellow worker, Henry Haton, aged 38 years.

Helen Marie Campbell died 1 Feb 1938, of pneumonia, aged 15 years, 2 months, 5 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Cobden Community High School.  She was born 26 Nov 1922, at Cobden, the second daughter of Leo F. and Fleta Campbell.  She joined First Baptist Church in Cobden at the age of 11 years.  She left her parents, two sisters, Leona Mae Campbell and Mary Anna Campbell; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Cantwell, of Valier; aunts, uncles, and cousins.

11 Feb 1938:

Elmer John Weaver died 7 Feb 1938, at Hale-Willard Memorial Hospital in Anna, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in September 1937, aged 21 years, 1 month, 15 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at Norris Funeral Home in Jonesboro.  He was born 24 Dec 1916, five miles south of Jonesboro, the son of Elmer and Ella (Bernhard) Weaver.  He was baptized on 9 Apr 1917, by Pastor G. Meyer, at Kornthal Lutheran Church.  He left his parents, a brother, Carl Weaver; and an aged grandmother, Mary Bernhard.

Jesse Rayster died.

18 Feb 1938:

Grover C. Hoffner died last Friday (4 Feb 1938) at Hale-Willard Hospital, aged 54 years, and was buried in Dongola Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Lutheran church in Dongola.   He lived in Dongola for years.  He was a cream tester for several cream stations in Dongola and operated a station of his own until 1936.  He left a widow, Fannie A. Hoffner, of Dongola; three sisters, Rosetta Smoot, Viola Otrich, both of Dongola, and Verda Lamer, of Anna; one brother, Lewis A. Hoffner, of Kankakee; his mother-in-law, Jane Rhymer, of Dongola; a brother, Herbert W. Ashenfelter, of Centralia; and three nephews, Richard Ashenfelter, of Springfield, and James Ashenfelter, and Herbert Wesley Ashenfelter, both of Centralia.

Robert Lee Devault was killed Sunday (13 Feb 1928) in a car accident near Cypress, Johnson County, aged 6 years, and was buried in West Eden Cemetery between Belknap and Cypress in Johnson County.  His father, William Devault, a farmer, backing out of the garage ran over him.  His funeral was at West Eden Church.  He left his parents and three sisters, Alice Devault, Helen Devault, and Mae Devault.

Samuel Montgomery died in Portland, Ore.

W. E. George died at Cypress, Johnson County.  He was the grandfather of Mrs. Steve Ketchie, of Wolf Lake.

25 Feb 1938:

Thomas Campbell died at Oklahoma City, Okla., of brain meningitis, following an operation for a sinus infection.  He was a brother of Mrs. Arlene Riley, of Cobden.

Mary K. (Ludwig) Schmidt died 21 Feb 1938, at DePaul Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., aged 70 years, 6 months, 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church.  She was born 15 Aug 1867, at Pocahontas, Mo., the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Ludwig.  She was baptized and confirmed at the German Lutheran church in Pocahontas.  She married on 3 Apr 1888, Herman Schmidt, who died 6 Jun 1918.  They had five children, of whom one son, Carl Schmidt,  preceded her in death.  Soon after her marriage she came to near Jonesboro.  She affiliated with the Lutheran church at Kornthal.  Three months ago she moved in with her daughter in St. Louis.  She left four children, Gertrude Leffer, of Decatur, Amelia Milberg,  and Lora Kersten of St. Louis, and Egbert Smith, of Jonesboro; two brothers, Henry Ludwig and William Ludwig; one sister, Minnie Kasten; and five grandchildren.  (See also 4 Mar 1938, issue.)

Infant of Clarence Wilson died.

4 Mar 1938:

Amelia Louise Hale died Sunday (27 Feb 1938).  Her funeral was at the Presbyterian church.  She was the wife of Dr. E. V. Hale, of Anna.  She left a son, James Hale, of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Mrs. August Molte, of Mattoon, and Mrs. E. E. Katterhenry, of Carmel, Ind.; and a grandson, Herman Molte, of Mattoon.

Mrs. Winstead Hale died at Anna.

Henrietta Peters died.  Her funeral was Saturday (26 Feb 1938) at St. Louis.  She lived in Balcom for many years.

11 Mar 1938:

William Hugh Lambert died 8 Mar 1938, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold Cooper, in Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. His funeral was at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro.  He was born 28 Feb 1849.

Mrs. Nancy Moore died 7 Mar 1938, and was buried in Morgan Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Pentecostal church in McClure, Alexander County.  She was born 26 Dec 1883.

Frank Cavitt died recently.

18 Mar 1938:

Dolores Ann Brown died 10 Mar 1938, just three days before her 3rd birthday, of pneumonia.  She had spent eight weeks in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.  Her funeral was at home on West Monroe Street.  She was born 13 Mar 1935, in Anna, the daughter of Howard and Alberta (Philbrick) Brown.  She left her parents, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Philbrick; and grandmother, Ellen Brown.

Leroy Jenkins died at Phoenix, Ariz., of tuberculosis, aged 16 years, and was buried in Arizona.  He was the son of Ed Jenkins, formerly of Anna.  He had two brothers who were very ill.

A brother of Mrs. Ford Miller, of Balcom,  died in Tennessee. 

Mrs. Ida Ketchie died.  Lee Ketchie, of Salisbury, N.C., came for the funeral.

25 Mar 1938:

Roy Risk died Sunday (20 Mar 1938) of heart attack.  He was a physician for Civilian Conservation Corps camps Union, Makanda, Pomona, and others.  He and his wife had visited friends in Benton, Franklin County and Dr. J. Moss, of Carbondale, Jackson County, and on the way home he began to have severe pains.  His funerals were at Norris Funeral Home chapel and at Virden, Ill.  His parents lived at Virden.

Carmen Angeneil Lingle died 21 Mar 1938, of measles, aged 8 years, 4 months, 28 days, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  Her funeral was at St. John's Church.   She was born 23 Oct 1928, the daughter of George W. Lingle.  She left her parents, six brothers, Olen Lingle, of Indianapolis, Ind., Oris Lingle, of Dundee, Clifford Lingle, Loyd Lingle, Weldon Lingle, and Forest Lingle, of Mill Creek; and four sisters, Eulalah McGown, of Carbondale, Jackson County, Vida Spears, of Indianapolis, Jewell Lingle, and Melba Lingle, of Mill Creek. 

Henry P. Cozby died Monday (21 Mar 1938) of throat cancer, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro.  He was born 30 Oct 1853, near Verona, Miss., one of five sons and two daughters.  He came to Anna on 10 Dec 1867, with his parents, two brothers, and one sister.  After about one year they moved to Jonesboro.  He was a carpenter until 15 Aug 1874, when he became deputy circuit clerk of Union County under A. Polk Jones.  After Jones' death he served as clerk until March 1881.  He then served as deputy clerk under E. M. Barnwell until 1884.  He ran for circuit clerk, but was defeated in 1884.  He was a carpenter until September 1919 when he was appointed janitor of Jonesboro schools and served until May 1928.  In November 1929 he was elected justice of the peace for Jonesboro Precinct.  He married on 28 May 1876, E. Belle Hunsaker.  They had five sons and five daughters, of whom one son died in childhood, and two sons and two daughters preceded him in death after reaching adulthood.  He left his widow, two sons, George C. Cozby and Merle Bundy Cozby, of Jonesboro; three daughters, Elsie Dorris, of Cleveland, Ohio, Irma Bernhard, of Washington, D.C., and Ina Tygett, of Jonesboro; 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Ruth Delane Tellor died Thursday(17 Mar 1938) of pneumonia, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Ogle Tellor.

1 Apr 1938:

Della (Campbell) Walker died 20 Mar 1938, at home in Monrovia, Calif., and was buried at Monrovia.  She was the sister of Jim Campbell, mother of Charles Walker, and wife of Will Walker.  She used to lived in Jonesboro.

Mary James burned to death Monday (28 Mar 1938) in her home at 117 Grove Ave., Anna, aged 71 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  The fire is thought to have been caused by lighting her pipe in bed or that her clothing caught sparks from the stove and caught on fire.  Her funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home.  She left two sons, Herbert James and Lee James, of Anna; one daughter, Emma Reeder, of Independence, Iowa; and one grandson, LeRoy James, of Champaign.

Mrs. Ella Rhodes died at Effington and was buried Sunday (27 Mar 1938) in Anna Cemetery.  She used to live in Union County.  Mrs. Dick Hinds was a son and Richard Hinds was a grandson.

8 Apr 1938:

Samuel S. Sullinger died 27 Mar 1938, at home in Mill Creek, aged 83 years, 6 months, 10 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Mill Creek.  He was born 17 Sep 1854, in Bloomfield, Stoddard Co., Mo.  He moved to Dunklin Co., Mo., in early manhood and lived most of his life at Kenneth and Caruth, Mo.  He joined the Missionary Baptist church when 20 years old.  He married in 1874 Ruth Marsh, of Kenneth, Mo., deceased.  They had one child who preceded him in death.  He married Violat A. Prewett, deceased.  They had four children, three of whom preceded him in death.  He married in 1900 Sally A. Wyatt.  They had seven children, of whom three preceded him in death.  He had lived in Mill Creek for the last 15 years.  He left a widow, five children, including Bert Sullinger, of Mill Creek, Ruth Rader, of Dongola, Linnie Gaskil, of Ullin, Pulaski County, and Edith Sullinger, of Mill Creek; nine grandchildren, one sister, Mary Hale, of Lakeland, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

Richard Angus Lanier died 31 Mar 1938, at his home in Anna.  His funeral was at First Christian Church in Anna.  He was born 29 Dec 1861.

George J. Andrews died 4 Apr 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 78 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 25 Nov 1859, at Champaign, one of five children.  He married on 27 Apr 1890, Rebecca Elnis, who died several years ago.  They had one child, Susie H. Clark, of Berwyn (Chicago).  He married in May 1916, Mrs. Cora Goatey.  They had one child, David M. Andrews, at home.  He was a charter member of Jonesboro Building & Loan Association.  He also left two sisters, Helen Russell and Minnie Hamilton, both of Kankakee.  He also left a granddaughter, Georgia Jane Clark, of Berwyn; a stepson, George Goatey; and a stepdaughter, Maggie Ketchie, of Jonesboro.

Jerry Jo Chase died Saturday (2 Apr 1938) at home, of whooping cough and pneumonia, aged 1 month, 28 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home.  He was the son of Gibbs and Bess Chase, of Anna.  He also left three sisters, Mary Ellen Chase, Peggy Chase, and Susan Chase; and one brother, Sonny Chase.

15 Apr 1938:

Everett W. Dotson died Sunday (10 Apr 1938) and his daughter, Joan Dotson, aged 9 years, died Saturday (9 Apr 1938) in an Urbana hospital, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident two miles south of Thomasboro and 12 miles east of Urbana, Champaign County.  Their funeral was at home in Owensboro, Ky.  He was formerly deputy clerk in Union County, but resigned to become a traveling salesman with Marshall Field & Co., of Chicago.   He had lived in Owensboro for two or three years.

Joseph Hoss died 11 Apr 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 78 years, 10 months, 6 days, in the family plot in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at home in Jonesboro.  He was born 5 Jul 1860, the son of Henry Hoss, of Greenville, Tenn.  They came to Union County when Joseph was a boy.  He married on 29 Nov 1884, Mary E. Barringer.  They had nine children, of whom six preceded him in death.  He hewed the stone that was used to build Stinson Library in Anna and the Episcopal church in Anna.  His last words were reportedly, "I see Jesus."  He left three children, John Hoss, Mrs. George Cozby, and Mrs. Audie Haire, all of Jonesboro; one sister, Martha Castleman, of McClure, Alexander County; one brother, William Hoss, of Jonesboro; six grandsons, Harold Cozby, Earl Hoss, Merle Hoss, Dickie Hoss, George Lewis, and Billy Haire, all of Jonesboro; and one granddaughter, Helen Cozby, of Jonesboro.

Arthur Lewis died at a veterans' hospital in Dawson Springs, Ky., aged 49 years.  His funeral was at Norris Funeral Home.  He was the nephew of Mrs. Octavia Davis and a cousin of Mrs. Alberta Willis.

Charles W. Bigler died 6 Apr 1938, at home in Cobden, aged 78 years, and was buried in St. Joseph Cemetery  His funeral was at St. Joseph Church in Cobden.

Clarence Morgan died 7 Apr 1938, in Detroit, Mich., and was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery.  Earl Morgan, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, was a brother.

22 Apr 1938:

W. T. Snider died recently at home in Clayton.  He moved from Jonesboro about 15 years ago.  He was a physician.  His first wife preceded him in death.  He left a widow.

John A. Tripp died 13 Apr 1938, at the home of his son, George Tripp, at Alto Pass, aged 77 years, 6 months, 24 days.  He was born 19 Sep 1860, near Jonesboro, the son of William C. and Louisa (Lewis) Tripp.  He married Lela Postelwate, who preceded him in death.  He was a farmer.  He left a son, George Tripp; one brother, J. C. Tripp, of Anna; one sister, Emma McCloud, of Jonesboro; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Brother of Walter Meadows died in Centralia, Marion County.

29 Apr 1938:

William Joseph "Joe" Brown died 25 Apr 1938, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ecker, in Jonesboro, of a heart attack, aged 78 years, 7 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Jonesboro.  He was born 18 Apr 1860, on a farm three miles south of Jonesboro, the son of Henry and Anna (Cook) Brown.  He was preceded in death by a brother three months ago.  He married on 4 Jun 1881, Eliza Frances Flaugh.  They had nine children.  He left his widow and nine children, Mrs. Arthur Ecker, Howard W. Brown, Trunie J. Brown, Frank G. Brown, and Mrs. Will Hileman, all of Jonesboro, Mrs. Will Hertz, of Anna, Mrs. Romyn B. Phillips, of McClure, Alexander County, Mrs. Rolla L. Sanders, of St. Louis, and Henry Clay Brown, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Cleo May Coffman died 20 Apr 1938, at home, aged 41 years, 8 months, 7 days.  She was born 13 Aug 1896, in Jonesboro, the daughter of Alonzo J. and Anne Coffman.  She spent her early life in Cairo, Alexander County, but had to quit school because of a nervous disorder.  She became a Christian at age 12 and was baptized on 15 Jun 1915 and joined First Baptist Church.  She left her parents, one sister, Ruth Goodman, of Anna; and one brother, Paul Coffman, of the U. S. Army stationed in St. Louis.

6 May 1938:

Ed Lingle committed suicide Monday (2 May 1938) by jumping into Big Muddy River about one half mile from No. 3 hard road near Aldrich and drowning, aged 59 years.  There was a coroner's inquest.  He lived on the Thomas Aldridge farm and had been in poor health.

Eulah Viola Eaves died 29 Apr 1938, at home two and a half miles east of Anna, aged 24 years, 2 months, 14 days.  She was born 16 Feb 1914, at Jonesboro, the daughter of Thomas Eaves.  She was converted at a revival meeting at Casper Church at the age of 18 years.  She was later baptized and joined the Baptist church at Vineland.  She left her parents, one sister, Margie Duncan; three brothers, Darl Eaves, Royal Eaves, and Melvin Eaves, all at home; three half-brothers, Jeff Kelley, Clarence Kelley, of Granite City, and Louie Kelley, of Anna; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Eaves, of Anna.

Mrs. Scott Jordan died Sunday (1 May 1938) at home in Macomb.  She used to live at Mill Creek.

13 May 1938:

Jesse Minton died 3 May 1938, aged 73 years, 10 months, 3 days, and was buried near his home.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 13 Jun 1865, the son of Love and Sarah Minton.  He married at the age of 24 years, Maria Gregory.  They had seven children, of whom three, Ross Minton, Roy Minton, and Exie Minton, preceded him in death.  He left his widow, three sons, Tiff Minton, Homer Minton, and Charles Minton; one daughter, Mrs. John Norton, all of Alto Pass; 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one brother, and one sister, of Carbondale, Jackson County.

Robert Dewey Stephens committed suicide 7 May 1938, at home in Springfield, Sangamon County, by shooting himself in the head with a 22-calibre rifle, aged 38 years, 4 months, 5 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His sons were planting flowers in the garden, when one son went upstairs to ask him to look at them, and found him dead.  His funeral was at First Methodist Church in Jonesboro.  He was born 2 Jan 1900, near Golconda, Pope County, the son of Monroe Stephens.  His mother died when he was young and his father married Mrs. Nettie Armstrong.  He joined the Methodist Episcopal church in Jonesboro at the age of 13 and transferred after his marriage to Douglas Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in Springfield.  He attended McKendree College for three years and graduated from Lincoln College in 1926.  He married on 13 Jan 1924, Lucile Hileman, daughter of Robert L. Hileman.  He was a sales manager for C. I. P. S. and had worked for the company for more than 20 years.  He was a Mason.  He left a widow, two sons, Bob Stephens and Jack Stephens; his stepmother, Nettie Stephens; and a brother, Elmer Stephens, of Anna.

Sarah Elizabeth (Cleveland) Fowley died 9 May 1938, at home in Alto Pass, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She had a stroke of paralysis about a year ago.  Her funeral was at home.  She was born 17 Jan 1868, in Marion, Williamson County, the daughter of Francis and Virginia Cleveland.  She moved to Cobden when a young girl and married on 30 May 1889, in Jonesboro, John Fowley.  They moved from Cobden to Alto Pass in 1902 and engaged in mercantile business in both towns.  She was a member of the Presbyterian church in Cobden, the Altissima Chapter No. 680, Order of the Eastern Star and the White Shrine.  She left one daughter, Lucille Fowley, of Detroit, Mich.; one son, Guy Fowley, of Alto Pass; a sister, Mrs. J. Oscar Adams, of Burbank, Calif.; an aunt, Olive J. Blackman, of Harrisburg, Saline County; and two cousins, C. V. Holliday, of Illmo, Mo., and Mrs. Bert Lamer, of Cobden. 

20 May 1938:

John Ezra Eaton committed suicide last Saturday (14 May 1938) by hanging himself in his basement at home in Elgin, aged 35 years, and was buried in Tripp Cemetery.  His wife was visiting in Jonesboro at the time of his death.  His funeral was at the home of his mother, Mrs. Henry Winn, near Tripp School west of Jonesboro.  He left a widow and two sons.

Hazel (Houseman) McCain died Tuesday (17 May 1938) at the home of Mrs. Laura Houseman in Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She gave birth two weeks ago and did not recover.  Her funeral was at the home of Floyd Weiss.  She was the wife of Leslie McCain.  Evelyn Blacker, of Crawfordsville, Ind., was a sister (27 May 1938, issue).

Dorthula Jane (Day) Hess died 13 May 1938, at home in Jonesboro, following a stroke of paralysis, aged 77 years, 29 days, and was buried in the family lot in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Methodist Church in Jonesboro, which she joined early in life.  She was born 14 May 1861, one of 10 children of Henry Douglas Day.  After finishing school, she taught two terms in rural schools in Union County.  She married on 22 Oct 1882, Silas Frank Hess, who died in 1890.  They had five children, two of whom preceded her in death in infancy.  She was also preceded in death by her mother and brother, with whom she lived after her husband's death.  She left one sister, Mrs. R. R. Hindman; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas J. Lackey, of Ullin, Pulaski County, and Mrs. Edith Hess, of Jonesboro; one son, Frank Hess, of Jonesboro; and nieces and nephews.

27 May 1938:

Lee Davis died Sunday (22 May 1938) following an automobile wreck just south of Tamms, Alexander County, on Saturday (21 May 1938).  Also in the car was James DeWitt, of Mill Creek, and Paul Lambert, of Tamms.  They were hospitalized in Cairo, Alexander County.  They were returning from Horseshoe Lake in Alexander County and hit a concrete abutment.  He was from Tamms.

Luvina (Dillow) Ferguson died Saturday (21 May 1938) in her garden, where she had gone to plant flowers.  She was found the next day.

Mrs. Rhoda Hickem died 20 May 1938.  She was the aunt of Mrs. Allie Bridgeman, of Barringer.

3 Jun 1938:

Nick Kohler committed suicide Monday (30 May 1938) by inhaling fumes from an auto, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Anna on 4 Mar 1898, the son of Henry and Ollie (Hess) Kohler.

James Harrison Ury died last Saturday (28 May 1938) at home, of infirmities of old age, aged 74 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  His funeral was at St. John's Church, which he joined at the age of 18 and where he served as a deacon and elder.  He was born 18 Aug 1864, one of seven brothers.  His oldest brother died in infancy and the others were Walter H. Ury, J. Webster Ury, Warren R. Ury, Absalom W. Ury, and Sidney A. Ury.  He married on 11 Sep 1890, Delia J. Poole, the daughter of George W. and Margaret Poole, and who died after more than 45 years of marriage.  They had five children, of whom two died in infancy.  He left three children, Viola Ruth wife of Ralph Dillow, of Dongola, George Ury, of Jonesboro, and Ernest Elmer Ury, of Jonesboro; two brothers, eight grandchildren, and 18 nephews and nieces.

Lavina (Dillow) Ferguson died 21 May 1938, at her home near Jonesboro, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Mill Creek Lutheran Church.  She was born 21 Sep 1866, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Poole) Dillow.  She joined St. John's Church early in life and transferred to the Congregational church at Mill Creek.  After her mother's death, she married at the age of 53 years, on 18 Jun 1919, Samuel Ferguson., who died in 1931.  She left one brother, Eli Dillow, of Dongola; one uncle, Wiley Poole, of Covina, Calif.; and two stepsons, Otis Ferguson and Kenneth Ferguson, of East St. Louis, St. Clair County.

10 Jun 1938:

Mary Ellen Hoss died 7 Jun 1938, at home in Jonesboro, of cancer, aged 72 years, 9 months, 20 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born 17 Aug 1865, the daughter of Henry Barringer.  She married on 29 Nov 1884, Joseph "Joe" Hoss, who died less than two months ago.  She had nine children, of whom six preceded her in death.  She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church more than 30 years ago.  She left one son, John Hoss; two daughters, Mrs. Audie L. Haire and Mrs. George Cozby; seven grandchildren, and one sister, Malinda Carter, of Bell City, Mo.

Edith Goines died Sunday (5 Jun 1938) at home in Balcom.  Her funeral was at home.  She left her husband, Elmer Goines; and a little daughter, Marjorie Goines.

Byron McMahon died 3 Jun 1938, aged 79 years  He was from Cobanal, Ark., and was the only surviving brother of the late Robert McMahon.

Margaret Louise Wright died 4 Jun 1938, at home at Mill Creek, aged about 7 days.  Her funeral was at home.  She was born 29 May 1938, the daughter of Leslie Wright (3 Jun 1938, issue).  She left her parents and a sister, Alberta Wright.

17 Jun 1938:

William Ernest Brewer died instantly 11 Jun 1938, in an automobile accident on Route 13 between Marion, Williamson County, and Carbondale, Jackson County, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.   Others in the car were John Draper, Norman Wilcoxin, Roy Miller, and Gene Treece.  Eleven people were injured.  Alfonso McKinney, of Colp, Williamson County, was the driver of the other car, suffered a concussion, but was released from a Herrin, Williamson County, hospital.   His funeral was at his parents' home in Jonesboro.  He was born 10 Jun 1914, in Pomona, Jackson County, the son of E. R. Brewer, of Jonesboro. He married on 26 Aug 1935, at Venice, Ill., Myrtle Rushing, of Alto Pass.  He had been living at the home of Mrs. Eeck Rushing, his mother-in-law, at Alto Pass.  He left a widow, his parents, one sister, Mrs. Joe Browning, of Granite City; Miss Ursel Brewer, of Akron, Ohio; Roscoe Brewer, of Jonesboro; and a grandmother, Mary Messamore, of Cobden.  (See also 1 Jul 1938, and 15 Jul 1938, issues.)

William Shifley died 13 Jun 1938, at the home of his brother near Brookport, aged 77 years, 4 months, 21 days, and was buried in Trinity Evangelical Church Cemetery east of Anna.  His funeral was at Norris & Son Funeral Home.  He was born 22 Feb 1861, the son of Alfred Shifley.  He was preceded in death by his wife in February 1938.  He joined the Evangelical Church early in life.  He left three half brothers, S. A. Shifley, M. M. Shifley, of Mounds, Pulaski County, and Henry P. Shifley, of Brookport, Massac County; one stepbrother, J. L. Jones, of Peoria; and several nieces and nephews.

Henrietta Davidson died at Ovid, Mich.  She was the sister of J. W. Davidson.

24 Jun 1938:

Charles T. Elliott died last week, aged 100 or 110 years.  He was from Menard County and knew Abraham Lincoln and had watched him split rails.  He lived in Springfield until the close of the Civil War, when he moved to Menard County.

1 Jul 1938:

Joseph Mayr, Jr. died 27 Jun 1938, from injuries received when his car that he was trying to crank start in gear ran over him, aged 71 years, 5 months, 20 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church.  He was born 7 Jan 1867, five miles south of Jonesboro, the only son of Matthias and Anna Mayr.  He was confirmed at an early age at St. Paul's Church at Kornthal and remained a member until his death.  He entered the grain business and was one of the founders of Jonesboro Elevator Company.  He served as Jonesboro mayor from 1934 to 1936.  He married on 20 Feb 1900, Minnie C. Mayer.  They had one son, Oscar Mayr, and two daughters, Marie Ecker and Louise Walters, all of whom survive.  He also left two sisters, Mrs. Fred E. Kies, of Jackson, Mo., and Anna Mayr, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and two grandchildren.

John Howard Kimmel died 16 Jun 1938, at St. John's Sanitarium, four miles east of Springfield, aged 16 years, 7 months, 24 days, and was buried in Morgan Cemetery beside his infant brother.  He was injured while playing basketball at Tamms, Alexander County, on 16 Dec 1937.  The morning after the game he was unable to walk and was taken to Hale-Willard Hospital in January 1938.  He also was at Holden Hospital in Carbondale and was admitted to St. John's Sanitarium on 11 Mar 1938.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Wolf Lake.  He was born 23 Oct 1921, in Preston Precinct, near McGuire School, the son of Clarence S. Kimmel.  He was baptized on 14 May 1938, at the Catholic church.  He was preceded in death by 5 years and 7 months by an infant brother, Harold Quentin Kimmel.  He left his parents, four brothers, Willie Kimmel, of Wolf Lake, Cyril Kimmel, of St. Louis, Alfred Cyrus Kimmel, and Charles Kimmel; five sisters, Mina Abernathy, of Wolf Lake, Daisy Cruse, of Jonesboro, Lorene Judd, of DeSoto, Frances Beatrice Kimmel, and Ruth Kimmel, at home; eight great-uncles, three great-aunts, six uncles, and four aunts.

Don Bratton Hunsaker died Sunday (26 Jun 1938) at home in Anna, of a heart attack, aged 53 years.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 4 Apr 1883, in Vienna, Johnson County.  His mother was a member of the Alden family of Union County.  He lived for a time in Jonesboro with his grandmother.  He married on 1 Jan 1910, Gale Cook.  He was a member of Anna Masonic Lodge.  He was a traveling salesman for Rudy Furnace Company, of Dowariac, Mich., for the past 16 years.  He left his widow, one daughter, Frances Hunsaker, who taught school in Vienna and is a student at University of Illinois; one niece, Mrs. Roberts S. Miles, of San Diego, Calif., who was the daughter of his only brother who died years ago; and by two half brothers, Paul Hunsaker, of Indianapolis, and Lawrence Hunsaker, of Vienna.

Roy Davis was shot and killed in an alley at Olmsted, Pulaski County.

Mrs. Emily Gay died at Poplar Bluff, Mo.

15 Jul 1938:

Paul Ellis Hubbs was instantly killed 10 Jul 1938, when his motorcycle crashed into a car near Wolf Lake on Route 3, just over the line in Jackson County, aged 22 years and 9 days.  Noel Finley and Robert Mallette were also on the motorcycle and it was unclear who was driving.  They both died later at Hale-Willard Hospital.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Wolf Lake.  He was born 1 Jul 1916, the son of James and Nora Hubbs, of Wolf Lake.  His mother preceded him in death on 13 Oct 1932, as did an infant sister.  He left six brothers, Louse Hubbs, of Wolf Lake, Elmer Hubbs, of Anna, Charles Hubbs, Merle Hubbs, and Hallie Hubbs; and two sisters, Louise Frances Hubbs and Mary Hubbs.

Noel Finley died Saturday (9 Jul 1938) at Hale-Willard Hospital in Anna, aged 22 years, and was buried at Puxico, Mo.  He lived in Puxico.

Robert Mallette died Sunday (10 Jul 1938) at Hale-Willard Hospital in Anna, aged 24 years, and was buried at Puxico, Mo.  He lived in Puxico and was a cousin of Noel Finley, who also died after the accident.

A woman and her infant died in a hospital at Murphysboro, Jackson County, from injuries sustained when a motorcycle with three youths, Paul Hubbs, Noel Finley, and Robert Mallette, crashed head-on with the car she was in.

Mary Jones died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Route 148 Y on 11 Jun 1938, aged 52 years.  George Wilcoxen, driver of the car which collided with the one she was in driven by Alfonso McKinney, was arrested on charges of manslaughter.  There were four other persons in the car, who were seriously injured.

William G. Hunter was murdered 7 Jun 1932, at Towson, Md.  John Tyson, aged 30 years, was arrested in May 1938 in Union County for the murder and was found guilty by a jury, which recommended the death penalty.  He was given a life sentence.

Berniece (Karraker) Hooker died 7 Jul 1938, of uraemic poisoning, aged 22 years, and was buried in a family cemetery east of McClure, Alexander County.  She died on her husband's 23rd birthday.  She was an expectant mother and had gone to stay with Mrs. Charles L. Hileman, a practical nurse.  She refused to go to the hospital.  Her baby, Karen Berniece Hooker, also died and was buried with her mother.  She was born 17 Aug 1917, at McClure, and graduated from McClure Community High School in 1935.  She was the niece of the late A. T. Sams, whose wife was a sister-in-law of Charles L. Hileman.  She married on 18 May 1935, Lee Hooker.  They lived on a farm three miles east of McClure.  She left her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hill; one sister, Ruth Solomon; and four brothers, Miles Karraker and Fletcher Karraker, of McClure, Tom Karraker, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Brown Karraker, of Omaha, Neb.

Fannie Hodges died at home in Lynwood, Calif., and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Norris Funeral Home in Anna on Tuesday (12 Jul 1938).  She was the widow of James Hodges.

Daughter of Mike Poole died Wednesday (13 Jul 1938) at home south of Mill Creek, aged three weeks, and was buried in Sims Cemetery, Alexander County.

Herbert Tucker died and his funeral was last week at Wolf Lake.

22 Jul 1938:

Elbert Sheridan Clardy died 17 Jul 1918, in a hospital from injuries sustained on a farm near Pontiac, Mich., after he fell from a hay wagon, aged 27 years, 5 months, 6 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Pentecostal church in Anna.  He was born 11 Feb 1911, at Bloomfield, Mo., the son of Sheridan Clardy, of Jonesboro.  He married on 4 Sep 1935, Louise Woll.  They had three children, Junior Clardy, age 2 years, Burnadene Clardy and Vernon Gene Clardy (twins), age 1 year.  He moved to work on a farm near Pontiac, Mich., in February 1938.  He left his widow, three children, his parents, two brothers, Fred Clardy and William Clardy, of Jonesboro; six sisters, Mrs. Robert Wells, of Alto Pass, Mrs. Everett Allen, of Jonesboro, Velma Clardy, June Clardy, Ruby Clardy, and Betty Clardy, at home in Jonesboro; seven uncles, Fred Hooker, of Carterville, Williamson County, Dan Hooker and Frank Hooker, of Blairsville, Lester Arnhart and Charles Arnhart and Earl Strawn, of Pontiac, Mich., and M. F. Clardy, of Metropolis, Massac County.  A card of thanks was signed by Mrs. Louis Clardy and Mrs. J. S. Clardy (29 Jul 1938, issue).  (See also 26 Aug 1938, issue.)

James R. Montgomery died Wednesday (20 Jul 1938) at Middletown, Logan County.  He was the brother of the manager of the Jonesboro Gazette.

Melvin Hagler died 15 Jul 1938, at home near Pomona, Jackson County, and was buried in Dutch Ridge Cemetery in Jackson County.

Mary (Sitter) Johnson died Wednesday (20 Jul 1938) at home at Wilmington.  She left a husband.

5 Aug 1938:

Charles Meyer died last Friday (29 Jul 1938) of a heart attack at Batesville, Ind.  He was the father of the wife of the Rev. C. L. Powell, of Salem Lutheran Church in Jonesboro.

Will Lamer died Sunday (31 Jul 1938) at home in Cobden.  His funeral was at First Presbyterian Church in Cobden.  He left a widow, and a daughter, Mrs. Mike West, of Cobden.  Walter Baggott, of Chicago, was a grandson.

John C. Perkins died  31 Jul 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 86 years, 7 months, 2 days, and was buried in Perry Cemetery.  His funeral was in the log cabin church in U-B-Dam Hollow.  He was born 22 Dec 1851, near Greenville, Ky.  He came to Union County in 1870 and spent the rest of his life at Jonesboro.  He joined First Baptist Church in Jonesboro early in life.  He was preceded in death by his first wife and eight children.  He left a widow, Sarah Perkins; a former wife, Martha Perkins, of Anna; four children, Lydia Perkins, of Los Angeles, Calif., Gertie Bates, address unknown, Cora Nicholaides, of Mounds, Pulaski County, Elenora Winn, of Jonesboro; 14 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  A card of thanks was signed by Mrs. Sara Perkins, Mrs. Sarah Perkins, Mrs. Elnor Winn, and Mrs. Marie Bridget, children and grandchildren.

Alfred H. Brooks died 31 Jul 1938, at home near Water Valley, aged 91 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at Water Valley Church.  He lived all his life in Union County.  His wife died several years ago and he went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Harry Row, near Water Valley.  He was a member of Lick Creek Masonic Lodge and was Worshipful Master for several years.  About six years ago he was elected Senior Steward of the Grand Lodge of Masons of Illinois.  He left three children, Ernest Brooks, of Flint, Mich., Mrs. Perry D. Parker, of East St. Louis, St. Clair County, and Mrs. Harry Row, of Water Valley.

George Leggens died.  He lived at Cobden.

12 Aug 1938:

William Threlkeld died last Friday (5 Aug 1938) at Hale-Willard Hospital in Anna, aged 61 years, 2 months, 16 days, and was buried in Oakland Cemetery.  His funeral was at Carterville Pentecostal Church.  He was born 18 May 1877, in Kentucky.  He married on 25 Feb 1904, Eva Hunt.  He was a retired coal miner from Carterville, Williamson County, where he had lived 33 years.  He left a widow and seven children, Everett Threlkeld, of Marion, Williamson County, Ida Moore, of Herrin, Williamson County, Henry Threlkeld, Leta Horn, Edna Ramsey, Ivan Threlkeld, and William Threlkeld, all of Carterville; and one brother, George Threlkeld, of Marion.

Norma Olean Russel died 5 Aug 1938, aged 6 months, 30 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born 6 Jan 1938, at Kaiser, Ark., the daughter of J. W. and Velan (Rippee) Russel.

Father-in-law of Christ Nichols died the first of the week in Pennsylvania.  Christ Nichols and his two sons, Ellis Nichols and Billy Nichols went for the funeral.

19 Aug 1938:

Hollie Tripp died Friday (12 Aug 1938) at home at 321 West Vienna Street, Anna, aged 56 years, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  His funeral was at Ebenezer Church near Anna.  He left his widow, Ida Tripp; a daughter, Velda Tripp; one sister, Mrs. Willie Stokes, of Des Plains, Ill.; and one brother, Frank Tripp, of Goreville, Johnson County.

Harry Bryant died 11 Aug 1938, at Anna State Hospital, of heat prostration, aged 57 years, 4 months, 8 days, and was buried in Old Shiloh Cemetery near Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Carterville, Williamson County, of which he was a member.  He married on 24 Apr 1904, Alma Phillips, of Mt. Vernon.  He joined the Methodist church in Jonesboro at the age of 12.  He lived in Carterville.  He was taken to the hospital in February 1938 after having a nervous breakdown.  He left a widow, five children, Olin Bryant, of Mt. Vernon, Mary Esther Phillips, of Carterville, Arnold Bryant, Earl Benton Bryant, and Naomi Bryant, at home; one brother, Johnnie Bryant, of Mt. Carmel, three sisters, Rebecca Phillips, of Mt. Vernon, Addie Conners, of Carterville, and Bessie Wilson, of Jonesboro; and an aged father, John Bryant, of Jonesboro.  (See also 2 Sep 1938, issue.)

Horce C. Pierson died !6 Aug 1938, at home three and a half miles north of Cobden, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.   He was born 2 Apr 1880.

William Jefferson Hankla died 15 Aug 1938, at home at 101 North Green Street, Anna.  He was born 8 Jan 1888, five miles east of Cobden, the son of William J. and Margaret Ellen Hankla.  He attended Southern Illinois Normal University and became a teacher.  He joined Bethel Baptist Church in his youth.  He married on 25 Jun 1911, Susie Fitzgerald.  They had two children, Violet Hankla and Dorris Hankla, both of Anna.  He engaged in merchandising for 15 years.  He moved to Anna and was engaged in the fruit brokerage business.  He was appointed County Superintendent of U. S. Sanitation Construction.  He was a regular attendant of First Baptist Church and the men's Bible class.  He also left three sisters, Mrs. John Moreland, of Anna, Mrs. Riley Hines, of Cobden, and Mrs. Thomas Aldridge, of Cobden; five brothers, John S. Hankla, Joseph T. Hankla, and W. L. Hankla, of Cobden, and George Hankla, of Jonesboro.

Mrs. Dave Rendleman died near Anna.

26 Aug 1938:

Ruth Stevenson died  from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  Her funeral was last Saturday (20 Aug 1938) at the Christian church in Carbondale, Jackson County.  She left her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Stevenson; and one brother, Clarence Stevenson.

Samuel S. Beaumont died at home in Chicago, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was Sunday (21 Aug 1938) at Norris Funeral Home.  He was a Mason.

Levi Dillow died 18 Aug 1938, at home, aged 80 years, 7 months, 18 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  His funeral was at Casper Church.  He was born 1 Jan 1858, northeast of Anna, the son of Abraham and Sophia (Lingle) Dillow.  He was preceded in death by his wife on 7 Aug 1932, and by three children, Cora Dillow, Harry Dillow, and Otis Dillow.  He joined the Methodist church at Western Saratoga.  He left three sons, George M. Dillow, of Great Falls, Mont. (It had been 23 years since George had been in Union County), Claude I. Dillow, of Jonesboro, and Roy C. Dillow, of Anna; two daughters, Adah Goddard, of Anna, and Grace McIntire, of Mitchell; one sister, Mrs. Walter Dillow, of Anna; 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  (See also 2 Sep 1938, issue.)

Mrs. Boda Hall, aged 26, and Donald Ray Hall, her infant son, aged 4 months, were instantly killed in head-on collision near the Hartman farm north of Anna.  The driver of the car was Harold or Hall Finley.  The other car was driven by James or Roy Shelton and William Eldon Burris, of Anna, was a passenger.  Burris was the son of Melvin Burris and was severely injured.  Shelton was absolved from blame.  (See also 23 Sep 1938, issue.)

Irobelle Tompkin died 21 Aug 1938, aged 61 years, 8 months, 5 days.  She was born 16 Dec 1876.  She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church early in life.  She married in 1898 Earnest Collie, deceased.  They had one son.  She married 2nd Thomas Tompkin.  They had seven children, of whom two daughters and one son died in infancy.  She left four sons, Rhebun Collie, of Jonesboro, Roy Tompkin and Fred Tompkin, of Anna, and Harry Tompkin, at home; one daughter, Mildred Tompkin, at home; six grandchildren, three daughters-in-law, one brother, Samuel Bess, of Jonesboro; and two sisters, Addie Hinkle, of Jonesboro, and Amana Johnson, of Murphysboro, Jackson County.

Henry Duncan died 25 Aug 1938, at home in Alto Pass, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Congregational church in Alto Pass, where he was a faithful attendant.  He was born 24 Jul 1879, near Benton, Franklin County, the son of William and Martha Duncan.  He joined the Methodist church at Kankakee in 1921 and in 1928 transferred to the Methodist church in St. Louis.  He married in 1919, Seva Arnold, of Alto Pass.  He left his widow, his mother, Martha Duncan, of Alto Pass; and his brother, Lester Duncan, of Houston, Texas.

9 Sep 1938:

Edward Garner Springs died 1 Sep 1938, at home near Wolf Lake, and was buried in Walker Hill Cemetery at Grand Tower, Jackson County.  His funeral was at the Presbyterian church in Grand Tower.  He was born 17 Feb 1869.

William Pinkney Rushing died 5 Sep 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 86 years, 4 months, 4 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 1 May 1852, in Decaturville, Tenn.  In 1854 he moved with his parents to Jonesboro.  He married in 1877 Melvina Overbay.  Two grown sons and an infant daughter preceded him in death.  In 1934 he had a stroke of paralysis.  He left his widow, five daughters, Bertha Frick, Ethel Dodd, Agnes Powles, all of Jonesboro, Ruth Parrish, of Piggott, Ark., Hester Grichton, of Orient; one son, Clarence Rushing, of Jonesboro; 23 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, seven nieces, and three nephews.  Grandsons who acted as pallbearers were Rufus Rushing and Hubert Rushing, of Gary, Ind., Byron Dodd, of Columbia, Mo., Carl Frick, Paul Dodd, and Enos Dodd, of Jonesboro.

John Bryant died 2 Sep 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 85 years, 5 months, 1 day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro, of which he was a member.  He was born 1 Apr 1853, near Marion, Williamson County.  He married on 26 Jul 1872, Zilpha Carter.  They had eight children, of whom Harry Bryant, his oldest son, and three other children preceded him in death.  He left four children, Rebecca Phillips, of Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Addie Connor, of Carterville, Williamson County, Johnnie Bryant, of Mt. Carmel, and Bessie Wilson, of Jonesboro.

Infant daughter of Carl Mees was stillborn 31 Aug 1938, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Roy L. Smith died 4 Sep 1937.  A poem composed by his aunt, Mrs. William Robertson, of Golconda, Pope County, was published in his memory. 

23 Sep 1938:

William Tate died Sunday (18 Sep 1938) near the Pentecostal church in Anna, aged 51 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He sat on a running board of a parked car, asked a friend to assist him in arising, and died in the friend's arms.

Mrs. A. L. Cherrick died last Thursday (15 Sep 1938) at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.  Her funeral was in St. Louis.

John Thomas Baldwin died 20 Sep 1938, at home in the northwest part of Jonesboro, aged 80 years, 8 months, 5 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 15 Jan 1858, at Chattanooga, Tenn.  He married on 20 Jul 1881, at Anna, Elizabeth Lippard. They had 10 children, of whom two died at birth and four others, Fred Baldwin, John Baldwin, Cecil Baldwin, and Freta Baldwin, preceded him in death.  He left four children, Harry Baldwin, of East St. Louis, Ralph Baldwin, of Anna, Lena Corzine, of Anna, and Elsie Shelton, of Jonesboro; one sister, Mary Nance, of Elmonte, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  (See also 30 Sep 1938, issue.)

Grandma McIntire died Tuesday (20 Sep 1938) at the home of Ed Hileman.

7 Oct 1938:

Cora (Harreld) Karraker died 3 Oct 1938, aged 79 years, 5 months, 7 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at home.  She was born 26 Apr 1859, in Carbondale, Jackson County, the daughter of Cyrus Harreld.  Her father left Carbondale soon after she was born and moved to the farm of his father, James Harreld, four miles north of Alto Pass.  She had two brothers, James Harreld and William Harreld.  She married on 19 Jun 1881, David W. Karraker, a Jonesboro attorney, who died in 1922.  Her husband bought the Willis Willard home in the north end of Jonesboro after their third son was born.  After her husband's death she sold the home to her son, Wallace, and built a cottage near her son Ed.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Anna and later a communicant of the Lutheran church in Jonesboro.  Four children preceded her in death, David Harold Karraker, Florence Amelia Karraker, and Mary Agnes Karraker died in infancy and Homer J. Karraker, her oldest son, died in 1931.  She left four children, Ed L. Karraker, of Jonesboro, Frances K. Harris, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., R. Wallace Karraker, of Jonesboro, and Cyrus H. Karraker, of Lewisburg, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Abbie Frances Cook died Monday (3 Oct 1938) at home on South Main Street in Anna.  Her funeral was at home.  She was born 26 Nov 1854, in Jonesboro, the oldest of 11 children of Oliver and Sarah Alden.  She married in 1874, Zachary Thomas Cook.  They lived in Murphysboro, Jackson County, and Jonesboro before coming to Anna.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.  She was past president of the Lilac Club and a member of the Matron's Club in Jonesboro.  She left four children, Sarah Pauline Cook, Oliver Alden Cook, Alice Clark, and Gail Hunsaker; three grandchildren, Frances Cook Hunsaker, Oliver Williford Cook, and Mary Frances Cook; four brothers, J. B. Alden, Oliver Alden, R. H. Alden, and Everett Alden; and two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Mangold and Mrs. W. H. Lence.

14 Oct 1938:

Clara Olive Lingle died 5 Oct 1938, at the home of her sister, Elsie Glover, in Jonesboro, aged 75 years, 7 months, 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro.  She was born 28 Feb 1863, near Jonesboro, the daughter of Moses Lingle.  She was stricken with infantile paralysis when 18 months old and was afflicted for the rest of her life.  She joined the Baptist church when she was 12.  A card of thanks from the brothers and sisters was signed by R. A. Lingle, Minnie Sansom, Watt Lingle, Ethel Carpenter, the Scurlock family, and Elsie Glover.

Mary Jane (Dillow) Meisenheimer died 3 Oct 1938, aged 82 years, 1 month, 6 days.  She was born 27 Oct 1856, in the St. John's neighborhood, the daughter of Henry and Sofie Dillow.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.  She married 18 Dec 1873, Jackson M. Meisenheimer, who died in 1900.  They had five children, all surviving, Henry A. Meisenheimer, of Reynoldsville, Etta Goodman, of Alton, William C. Meisenheimer, of Houston, Texas, Clara E. Lingle, of Wolf Lake, and Jackson M. Meisenheimer, at home.  She also left 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one brother, Calvin Dillow, of Dongola; one half brother, John Dillow, of Jonesboro; one half sister, Cora Ury, of Carbondale, Jackson County.

21 Oct 1938:

J. Henry Corzine died Sunday (16 Oct 1938) at home near Dongola, aged 67 years, and was buried in Dongola Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Dongola.  He was born and lived his entire life where he died.  He left his widow, Alice Emma Corzine; two sons, C. R. Corzine and Chester Corzine; a niece, Flossy Corzine, who lived at his home for years; his mother, Catherine Chamberlain; a brother, C. Frank Corzine; a sister, Ida Holly; and four grandchildren.

28 Oct 1938:

Wendell Ward Gardner died 18 Oct 1938, at home south of Jonesboro, aged 30 years, 6 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Kornthal.  He was born 18 Apr 1908, near Vienna, Johnson County, the son of Edd L. and Alice L. Gardner.  He joined the Christian church in Anna at the age of 19.  He married on 10 Oct 1926, Wanda Sauerbrunn, the daughter of George Sauerbrunn, of Jonesboro.  They had three sons, Charles Wendell Gardner, age 9 years, Harold Eugene Gardner, age 7 years, and Jimmie Leroy Gardner, age 3 years.  He also left his parents, and a brother, Lewis Gardner.

Elbert O. Martin died 23 Oct 1938, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Pentecostal church in Anna.  He was born 7 May 1874.

Margaret Alice Carter died Saturday (22 Oct 1938) at home near Cypress, Johnson County, aged 70 years, and was buried in Friendship Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Friendship Church near Dongola.  She left her husband, Steve Carter; seven children, Velvie Groner, of Carbondale, Jackson County, Elsie Kiesler, of Jonesboro, Lois Hudgins, and Arthur Carter, both of Anna, Larkie Carter, of Elgin, Harvey Carter, and Homer Carter of Cypress; and one brother, Fred Johnson, of Anna.

4 Nov 1938:

Charles Reeves, aged 75 years, his daughter, Eva Reeves, aged 33 years, and Mrs. James Snyder, aged 58 years, were killed Saturday (29 Oct 1938) in an automobile wreck two miles east of the Cape Girardeau bridge at the McClure Y in Alexander County.  Albert Reeves, the son of Charles Reeves, was critically injured, as was Mrs. S. E. Storme, of Marion, wife of Williamson county clerk and another daughter of Charles Reeves.  Charles Reeves was a retired coal miner and lived at Cambria, Williamson County.  His car collided with a coal truck driven by Henry Norris, of Thebes, Alexander County, who was accompanied by his father.

C. L. Dyer died in an automobile accident at the McClure Y when his auto struck a furniture van broadside.  George Marlow, also of Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, was in the car.  Six hours earlier a accident was at the same spot which killed four people.  The furniture van was driven by J. R. Perrin, of Dallas, Texas.

Mary (Belcher) Frogge died 1 Nov 1938, at Hale-Willard Hospital in Anna, after giving birth to twins on the same day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Wolf Lake Methodist Church.  She was born 1 Jan 1918, the daughter of Alvin Belcher.  She left her husband, Woodrow Frogge; her parents, twin infant daughters, Mary Lou Frogge and Martha Sue Frogge; two sisters, and four brothers.  (See also 11 Oct 1938, issue.)

An infant of Harold Lingle was stillborn and was buried Monday (31 Oct 1938) in Jonesboro Cemetery.

11 Nov 1938:

Dorah Vancil died Friday (4 Nov 1938) at the home of her son, Ray Vancil.

Oscar Clarence Hase died last Wednesday (2 Nov 1938) at St. Mary's Hospital in Cairo, Alexander County, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Lutheran church in Mill Creek.  He lived near Ullin, Pulaski County.

Edward Chester died last Friday (4 Nov 1938) at home in Tamms, Alexander County.  He used to live in Union County.

25 Nov 1938:

Adam Pearl died 19 Nov 1938, at Missouri Pacific Hospital in St. Louis, aged 50 years, 7 months, 21 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Jonesboro, of which he was a member.  He was born 28 Mar 1888, near Dongola, the son of Andrew and Jane (Carlock) Pearl.  He was employed at the age of 16 years by the Mobile & Ohio Railroad Company and was promoted to foreman.  He married in 1908 at Jonesboro, Effie Turner.  They lived mostly at Jonesboro, but 20 years were spent at Mt. Glen and the last eight years at Percy, Willisville, and Cache, as a railroad employee.  He was a member of the Woodman Lodge of Alto Pass and the B. of M. W. E.  He left his widow, seven children, Isabel Kelley, of Anna, John Pearl and Sam Pearl, of East St. Louis, Martha Carrona, of Willisville, and Joe Pearl, Orville Pearl, and Dianne Pearl, at home; one sister, Mrs. Henry Hileman, of Buncombe, and one brother, Fred Pearl, of East Crondelt; and three grandchildren, Janet Kelley, Pasty Kelley, and Billy Kelley, of Anna.

Mrs. Jerome Glasco died last Wednesday (23 Nov 1938?), and was buried in Ozark Cemetery in Williamson County.  Her funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal Church.

9 Dec 1938:

John Baggott died 1 Dec 1938, at the home of John Thomas in Berryville, of infirmities of old age, aged 82 years and 5 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at Norris & Son Funeral Home.  He was born 25 Nov 1856.  He left one half brother, Samuel Hoyle.

Martha Elizabeth Baldwin died 7 Dec 1938, art home in Jonesboro, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at home.

Amanda (Brown) Badgley died 29 Nov 1938, at the home of her grandson, William Allen, at Mill Creek, aged 75 years, 3 months, 29 days, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church at Mill Creek.  She was born 3 Aug 1862, near Jonesboro.  She joined the Methodist church at an early age.  She married William Hoover, who died several years ago.  She married Thomas Badgley, who also is deceased.  She left two daughters, Nora Hoover Powlas, of Anna, and Flora Hoover Jensen, of Springfield; one brother, Thomas Brown, of Mill Creek; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

James Calvin Stewart died and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was on 4 Dec 1938, at home.  He was born 22 Apr 1867, in Johnson County, the second child of three sons and seven daughters of Thomas B. and Sarah Jane (Lovelace) Stewart.  He left five sisters, Ruby Stewart, of Denver, Josephine Stewart, of St. Louis, Nora Mitchell, Zella Baird, and Mabel Hastie, of Denver.  He was educated in public schools at Buncombe, Normal University at Carbondale, and graduated in 1891 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in St. Louis.  He began practicing medicine in Goreville, Johnson County, and moved to Anna in 1897.  In 1929 he was appointed managing officer of Alton State Hospital and served until 1933.  He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Anna and the Masonic Lodge.  He married in 1893, Ada Pearl May, of Marion, Williamson County.  They had four children,, of whom three preceded him in death.  He left one son, Dr. Don B. Stewart, of Anna; his widow, and two granddaughters.

Grandma Sarah Ellem died recently and her funeral was on 4 Dec 1938.

16 Dec 1938:

Joseph Walter Hilton was killed Sunday (11 Dec 1938) when he stepped in front of a car when crossing the road in front of Lirely's Garage in Cobden.  There was a coroner's inquest.  His funeral was at the Congregational church in Cobden.  He was born 27 Apr 1887, the son of James and Lucinda Hilton.  He left his widow, a daughter, one son, Norman Hilton, who just opened a new farm machinery shop in Anna.

Thomas N. Karraker was killed last Thursday (8 Dec 1938) in an auto accident on Highway 13 near Freeburg, St. Clair County, aged 63 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His car crashed into a transport truck driven by Garfield Nowlin, of St. Louis.  He was a banker and bond salesman in St. Louis and used to live at Mounds, Pulaski County, and at Anna.

Hazel Taylor died 14 Dec 1938, at home in Jonesboro, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Walnut Grove Church.  She was the daughter of Calvin Taylor, an Illinois Central employee.  (See also 23 Dec 1938, issue.)

Martha Elizabeth (Lippard) Baldwin died 7 Dec 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 70 years, 8 months, and 21 days.  She was born 16 Mar 1868, in Dongola.  She was baptized at Big Creek Baptist Church at the age of 12.  She married John Baldwin, who died two months and 17 days before she did.  She left four children, Elsie Shelton, of Jonesboro, Ralph Baldwin and Lena Corzine, of Anna, and Harry Baldwin, of East St. Louis; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one brother, James Lippard, of Metropolis, Massac County.

Allen Hill died last Friday (9 Dec 1938).

23 Dec 1938:

Joseph Mayer, Sr. died 15 Dec 1938, at home in Kornthal neighborhood, aged 94 years, 8 months, 24 days, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery.  His funeral was at Kornthal Lutheran Church.  He was born 22 Feb 1844, in Efferding, Austria, the son of John and Mary Mayer.  He immigrated at the age of 9 with his parents and arrived at Baltimore, Md., thence moved to Willard's Landing in Union County.  Friends met them there with a team of oxen and a cart.  The cart was loaded with baggage, so all, except Mrs. Mayer and the baby, walked to Jonesboro.  He was baptized as an infant and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Kornthal.  He married at the age of 25, Mary Pickel, who died 11 Jan 1886.  He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, three brothers, and three children, Rosina Mayer, Carl Mayer, and Agnes Mayer.  He left two daughters, Minnie Mayer and Emma Mayer; seven grandchildren, Clara Blattner, Alma Cox, Elfreda Wilkening, Irma Dankel, Oscar Mayr, Marie Ecker, and Louis Walters; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ida Frances (Womack) Foster died 16 Dec 1938, at home in Jonesboro, aged 52 years, 11 months, 16 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was 19 Dec 1938, at the Pentecostal church in Jonesboro.  She was born 1 Jan 1886, in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, the daughter of James and Sarah Womack.  She was converted at age 11 and 25 years ago received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  She married on 14 Jul 1904, at Anna, Frank Foster.  They had five children, of whom two, Golda Marie Foster and Mary Alice Foster, died when only a few months old.  She left her husband, three children, Elbert Foster, Ina Elkins, and Cleta Hill, all of Jonesboro; and grandchildren, Frankie Elkins, Freddie Elkins, Betty Frances Foster, Doris Ilene Hill, and James Hill; three brothers, Fred Womack, Thomas Womack, and William Womack; two sisters, Mrs. Lew Lindsey and Alice Toms, all of Jonesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

E. A. Hall died at Chester, N.C.  His funeral was Thursday (22 Dec 1938?) at Mt. Pleasant, N.C.  He was the brother-in-law of George Heilig.

30 Dec 1938:

Henry H. Kohn died last Thursday (22 Dec 1938) at home on South Main Street, Anna, aged 77 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was a Mason. He was born in Poland and came to America when 15 years old, landing at Boston.  He located at Chesterfield, Macoupin County, later coming to Anna, where he lived over 50 years.  He had a clothing business and traveled for an eastern wholesale clothing house.  He was a Republican leader in Union County.  He was supplies purchasing agent for state institutions under Gov. Lowden, Gov. Len Small and Gov. L. L. Emerson.  He was vice president of Anna National Bank.  He left a widow, and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Beatrice Crawford, of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Mrs. Theresa Rickman, of Chicago.  A step granddaughter, Lillian Lanier wife of James Rauska, of Benton Harbor, Mich., was raised by Mr. Kohn.  In his will, he left $5,000 to Hale-Willard Hospital; $1,000 to National Jewish Hospital in Denver, Colo.; $500 to Madge Mulraney, of Springfield, for kindness in his last illness; $500 to the Masonic Old Folks Home in Sullivan; $1,500 to his niece, Mrs. Zoe Louise Leib, of Anna; $1,000 to Charles Lorch, of Springfield, his secretary when he was director of the Department of Purchases and Construction; $5,000 to his niece, Leah Odek; and $2,500 to his nephew, Fischel Odek, in Poland (6 Jan 1939, issue).

Jonah Bishop died Friday (23 Dec 1938).

Infant daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. T. H. Leemhuis died 22 Dec 1938, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  The funeral was at the home in Anna.  She was born 21 Dec 1938.

The grandfather of Dorothy and Gene Robinson, of Alto Pass, died Saturday (24 Dec 1938) at Sparta, Randolph County.
