9 Jan 1934:

Donald Linn died 24 Dec 1933, in an automobile accident near Bakersfield, Calif., aged 21 years, and was buried in Masonic Lawn Cemetery.  The funeral was at the home of his parents.  He was the son of Samuel Linn, of Sacramento, Calif.  He also left two sisters.

Elizabeth Jane Lemon died 3 Jan 1934, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. D. Stevenson, on West Market Street in Jonesboro, aged 90 years, and was buried in Crab Orchard Cemetery in Williamson County.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church.

Mary (Henry) Crawford died 29 Dec 1933, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home.   She was born 21 May 1865.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Anna.  She married on 25 May 1895, E. H. Crawford, who died 10 years ago.  She left six children and four grandchildren.

Martha Jane Weaver died 26 Dec 1933, in Anna, aged 76 years, 8 months, 13 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Christian Church.  She was born 13 Apr 1857, in Bloomington, Mo., the daughter of Sterling Johnson.  She joined the Baptist Church at St. Joe, Mo.  She married in 1873 Rufus Weaver.  They had eight children.  Two children preceded her in death.  She left one daughter, Mrs. Tom Hammond, of Avert, Mo., one son, Danny Weaver, of St. Louis, one sister, Emma Johnson, of Anna; 26 grandchildren, and about 15 great-grandchildren.

 
12 Jan 1934:

Helen (Frick) Day died 23 Dec 1934, of a heart attack at St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif.  She was born in Jonesboro, the fourth and youngest daughter of six children of Paul Frick, of Jonesboro.  She and her husband moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., in the 1880s.  She left a son, William C. Day, of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. William A. McLaren, of Montecito, Calif.—Santa Barbara Daily News, Dec. 24.  Her sisters were Mrs. Alice Miller, Mrs. Laura A. Hanners, and Mrs. Fannie Cook.

Mrs. Caroline Shingles died last Friday at Fornfelt, Mo., aged about 70 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She used to live in Jonesboro.  R. C. Crowell brought her body back to Union County for burial. 

Ephriam Moore Settlemoir died 6 Jan 1934, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Milas Grisham, in Anna, aged 84 years, 10 months, 26 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born 10 Feb 1849, in Paducah, Ky.  He left several children.

Halleck Johnson was beaten to death Saturday  (10 Jan 1934) at his home two miles west of Mounds, Pulaski County, aged 74 years.  His wife was also beaten and died at St. Mary's Hospital in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 70 years.  They were truck farmers.  He was nearly blind and sold produce from his wagon.  Their daughter, Mrs. Homer Jones, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, found them.

Laura DuFrain died Monday last week (12 Jan 1934) at home on Hudgeon's Creek, of pneumonia, and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Beech Grove Church.  She was born in 1873.  She married Jeremiah DuFrain, who died several years ago.  She left four brothers.  Mrs. Rolla Wilson was a niece.

19 Jan 1934:

J. Will Laws died Tuesday (16 Jan 1934) at home at 411 Northwest 22nd Street, Oklahoma City, Okla., aged 61 years, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City.  His funeral was at Jack Jones Funeral Parlor.  He was born east of Anna.  He taught school for years and served two terms as Union County clerk.  He was first elected in 1898 and while clerk studied law under Judge M. C. Crawford.  He was admitted to the bar in Oklahoma and moved to Oklahoma City from Anna in 1907.   He was a justice of the peace for the past 10 years.  He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges and deacon of Olivet Baptist Church.  He left his widow, Nora Laws; a daughter, Lenore Lightner; two sons, Glenn Laws and Jennings Laws.  Mrs. Anna Laws, of Anna, was a sister-in-law or niece, and her daughter, Mae Laws, of Oklahoma City, was a niece or grandniece.   Mrs. Oliver Myers was a sister-in-law. Washington W. Dillow died Monday (15 Jan 1934) at home in Tamms, Alexander County, aged 85 years.  He had a heart attack last Saturday (13 Jan 1934).  He was born near Dongola and lived there until 26 year ago, when he  moved to Tamms and became clerk of the M. & O. Railroad.  He left a widow, Emma Dillow, of Tamms; one sister, Octavia Davis, of Anna; and four children, T. O. Dillow and Homer Dillow, both of Tamms, Birdie Willis, of Anna, and Elmer Dillow, of Boone, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Martha Johanna "Aunt Jane" Bernhard died 17 Jan 1934,  at the home of her nephew, Fred Hehenberger, in Jonesboro, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Kornthal Lutheran Church.  She was born 25 Nov 1858, near Jonesboro, the daughter of John and Anna (Peisel) Ecker. She was confirmed on 2 Apr 1874, at Ebenezer Evangelical Church and transferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church.  She married on 27 Dec 1883, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Kornthal, George Jacob Bernhard, who died in 1920.  She left one sister, Rosa Drexler, nieces and nephews.  (See also 26 Jan 1934, issue.)

John Brothers died last Monday (8 Jan 1934?) at home in Wolf Lake, aged 70 years, 4 months, 18 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He left a widow and several children.  Mildred Rader and Mary Rader, students at Morgan School were granddaughters.  (See also 26 Jan 1934, issue.)

Albert W. Evers died and his funeral was Sunday (14 Jan 1934) at Grand Chain, Pulaski County.  He lived in Kalamazoo, Mich.  He was the uncle of Mrs. W. L. Caraker and great-uncle of her daughter, Virginia Caraker.

Eunis Jessen died at the home of her daughter, Eloise Jessen, in Urbana, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She was the widow of C. Jessen, a former prominent fruit grower in Alto Pass. She left a daughter and three sons, Clifford Jessen, of Clinton, Paul Jessen, and Virgil Jessen, of Urbana.

John Monroe Mackey died 15 Jan 1934, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lulu Trees, in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Baptist Church in Anna.  He was born 8 Aug 1844, in Williamson County.  He married on 4 Mar 1869, Caroline Malissa Sanders.  They had four children, all of whom survive.  He moved in 1854 to a farm north of Anna, where he lived until his wife died in 1924.  He then moved to Anna.  He was a Civil War veteran.  He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church and transferred to First Baptist Church in Anna.

Miss Sammy Lane Kilgore was killed 27 Dec 1934, by falling from a precipice on Devil's Backbone near Camp Bandy, Calif.  Her funeral was at Buente, Calif.  She was a granddaughter of Dr. R. E. Faris, who moved to Roswell, N.M. about 35 years ago.  She was the daughter of S. G. and Edith (Faris) Kilgore.

26 Jan 1934:

Charles V. Powell died 23 Jan 1934, following an operation for ruptured stomach ulcer on 21 Dec 1933, aged 44 years, 2 months, 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He suffered from stomach troubles since returning from World War I.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Herrin. Williamson County.  He was born 17 Oct 1888, in Jonesboro, the son of John M. and Sarah Powell.  He was associated with his father in a grocery in Jonesboro.  His parents died several years ago.  He studied window decorating at a Chicago trade school and was employed at Alden Department Store as a window trimmer.  He married on 16 Feb 1916, Mayme A. King, of Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He was employed by J.V. Walker Clothing Store in Carterville two years.  They moved to Herrin 12 years ago and worked in the Walker store there.  He enlisted 28 Apr 1918, and was sent to France and spent 11 months of service in Europe.  He was gassed in the Argonne offensive on his birthday, Oct. 17, 1918.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the American Legion Post in Herrin, the Masonic Lodge in Jonesboro, and the Baptist Church in Anna.--Herrin Journal. 

Eva (Mulkey) Boyd died 18 Jan 1934, in Los Angeles, Calif.  She was cremated.  She was the last one of the children of Judge Mulkey, formerly of Union County. 

Edward J. Brundage committed suicide last Saturday (20 Jan 1934) in his basement at home in Lake Forest, Cook County, because of financial losses.

Rosetta Thomas died 20 Jan 1934, at home in Jonesboro, of the flu, aged 40 years, 11 months, 13 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  She was the widow of Jesse Thomas, who was accidentally killed by the discharge of a revolver at a hog killing south of Jonesboro about three years ago.  She left three young children.

W. A. Schwartz died last Tuesday (23 Jan 1934) at home in Carbondale, Jackson County, aged 82 years. He was twice elected state's attorney in Jackson County and was a bachelor.

2 Feb 1934:

Mrs. Neal Edmonds died and her funeral was last Thursday (25 Jan 1934) at Savault, Ind.  She was the aunt of J. L. McFadden, of Anna.

9 Feb 1934:

Martha Ellen (Outland) Harris died 28 Jan 1934, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Wolf Lake.  She was born 10 Jul 1895, the daughter of Matthew Harris and Anna Outland.  She married in 1916 Jackson Harris.  Her parents, two brothers, two sisters, and an infant daughter preceded her in death.  She left her husband, an adopted daughter, Mary Ellen Harris; and two brothers, Marion Outland and Cleve Outland, both of East St. Louis, St. Clair County.

John Rednour was killed last Saturday (3 Feb 1934) in an automobile accident on Route 150, aged 53 years.  He was driving a dump cart pulled by a mule and horse.  The car was driven by R. B. Phillips, a farmer near McClure, Alexander County, who was a brother-in-law of Arthur Ecker, of Jonesboro.  Rednour was a farmer and CWA worker north of Grimsby on Route 144.   He left a wife and nine children.

W. H. Willoughby died Tuesday (6 Feb 1934) at home in Anna,, aged 83 years.  His funeral was at First Baptist Church.  He was a wagon maker.  He was a brother of P. C. Willoughby, former postmaster in Anna.  He was a leader of the Baptist Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge.  He left several grown children.  Edith Herman, a trained nurse at the state hospital in Anna, was a daughter and lived with him.  Jane Herman, Lucile Willoughby, and George Willoughby were grandchildren. (See also 16 Feb 1934)

16 Feb 1934:

J. Vernon Smith died last Monday (12 Feb 1934) at home in Vienna, Johnson County, of heart trouble, aged 26 years.  His funeral was at Vienna.  He was Johnson County circuit clerk.

Elizabeth Weiss was killed Sunday (11 Feb 1934) in an automobile accident on Route 13 near Sparta, Randolph County.  The car skidded on the snow-covered pavement.  Three others were in the car, her husband, Rudolph Weiss, Sr.; her son, Rudolph Weiss, Jr., aged 16 years; and Evelyn Neister, a friend of her son, all of Granite City.  They were on their way to visit her mother at Cobden.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church in Cobden.  She was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge at Granite City and a church worker.

Philip Weber died 14 Feb 1934, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.  His funeral was at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Mary (Walton) Merker died 13 Feb 1934, at home in Belleville, St. Clair County, aged about 75 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home.  She was the daughter of James Walton.  She left one daughter, of Belleville.

Son of John Halterman died Tuesday (13 Feb 1934) at home in Anna, aged 4 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 

G. W. Browning died and his funeral was last Friday (9 Feb 1934)  at Buncombe, Johnson County, aged 83 years, and was buried in a family cemetery near Buncombe.  Graden Browning, of Alto Pass, was a grandson.

 
23 Feb 1934:

Martha (English) Campbell died 18 Feb 1934, at home near Cape Girardeau, Mo., aged 71 years.  She was the niece of Mrs. J. R. English, of Jonesboro.

Sarah Ann (Wright) Cleary died 17 Feb 1934, at home in Jonesboro, of heart trouble, aged 78 years, 8 months, 19 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Pentecostal church in Jonesboro.  She was born 29 May 1855, in Waterloo, the daughter of Calvin and Martha Wright.    She married 46 years ago at Cairo, Alexander County, Michael Carter "Mike" Cleary.  She left her husband, one daughter, Mrs. George J. Andrews, of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  Mr. and Mrs. Will Green and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fletcher, of St. Louis, were grandchildren.

Dr. L. F. Robinson died last Thursday (15 Feb 1934) at home in Ullin, Pulaski County, aged 83 years, and was buried in Ullin Cemetery.  He was a physician and retired two years ago.  He was a Mason. 

William Cast died last Saturday (17 Feb 1934) at home east of Cobden, of cancer, aged 48 years, and was buried at Makanda, Jackson County.  His funeral was at Shiloh Church.

J. B. Suit died 15 Feb 1934, at Anna City Hospital.  He was from Buncombe, Johnson County.

 

Roberta (or Violet) Keller died 18 (or 19) Feb 1934, at Anna City Hospital, after an operation for ruptured appendix, aged 7 years.  Her funeral was at Ford Funeral Home.  She was the daughter of Garner Keller, of Dongola.

Aunt of Mrs. C. W. McGee, of Middletown, died last Thursday (15 Feb 1934), at Jacksonville, of double pneumonia.  Mrs. McGee's mother was also very ill.

 2 Mar 1934:

Infant son of James Bridges (or James Thomas) died Wednesday (28 Feb 1934) at the home of his grandfather, Charles A. Pribble, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church.  He was born 8 Dec 1932.

James Shelton was killed Tuesday (27 Feb 1934) at Carbondale, Jackson County, walking on the Illinois Central tracks, aged about 35 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Jonesboro.  He resided at Carbondale for the past two years and was employed on the state road.  He used to lived in Union County.  He left a widow and two children.

Charles Sivia died 21 Feb 1934, at home in Anna, and was buried in Camp Ground Cemetery.  His funeral was at Camp Ground Church.  He was born 4 Oct 1873, the son of James and Mary (Lentz) Sivia.  He married on 2 Mar 1913, Lizzie Wilfong.  He had two children, Claude Sivia and Mary Sivia.  He also left one sister, Mrs. Daniel Damron, of Anna.  (See also 9 Mar 1934, issue.)

9 Mar 1934:

Leonard Lavender and Virgil Holderfield, both of Marion, Williamson County, were drowned last Sunday (4 Mar 1934) when the truck they were driving left the pavement west of Vienna, Johnson County, on Route 146 and plunged into a creek.  They were returning from delivering a load of coal at Metropolis, Massac County.

Nannie J. (Corgan) Ballard died 2 Mar 1934, at home in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church in Anna, of which she was a member.  She was born 22 Mar 1853, near Makanda, Jackson County, the daughter of James and Louisa (Grammer) Corgan.  She married on 5 Jul 1875, D. H. Vancil, who died 1 Jan 1899.  She married on 31 Dec 1900, C. C. Crowell, who died 2 Apr 1917.  She married P. M. Ballard, who died four or five years ago.  She left three brothers, James A. Corgan, of Carbondale, Jackson County, E. F. Corgan, of Carbondale, and P. C. Corgan, of Marion, Williamson County; three sisters, Martha Ann Winn, of Anna, Sarah E. Lindsey, of Gorham, and Minnie Phelps, of Seattle, Wash.  Dr. R. H. Crowell, of Chicago, was a stepson.

Avis May King died last Sunday (4 Mar 1934) at home on Morgan Street in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Methodist church.

Mrs. Lizzie Sivia died Wednesday (7 Mar 1934) and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

16 Mar 1934:

Alvin Loos died at home in Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged about 42 years.  He was the son of William Loos, and formerly lived in Jonesboro.

Nancy Vernetta "Nettie" (Scott) Walker died 12 Mar 1934, at her home in Jonesboro, aged 76 years, 4 months, 5 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She died in the house where she attended school as a young girl.  She fell and broke her hip on 16 Oct 1931, and became an invalid.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, of which she was a member of 57 years.  She was born 7 Sep 1857, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., one of 14 children of E. C. and Hester (Meadows) Scott.  She married in 1878 Willard Walker, of Jonesboro.  Their children were:  Hester Jackson and Clarence Walker, both of Jonesboro, Esther Fowler, of Los Angeles, Calif..  She also left one sister, Sophia Blackstone; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Karl Gustave "Gus" Rudert died 11 Mar 1934, at home south of Jonesboro, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  He had been confined to his bed since August 1933.  His funeral was at Kornthal Lutheran Church.  He was born 1 Aug 1864, in Gefell, Germany, the son of Frederick Gustave and Henrietta (Rothe) Rudert.  He came to America on 10 May 1881, and lived in Missouri four years with his brother Ernest Rudert.  He came to Illinois in 1885 and worked six months for Matthias Mayr.  In 1886 he was employed at Hehenberger's sawmill south of Jonesboro and worked there seven years.  He then moved to his farm.  He was well educated and one of the most widely read men in Union County, being able to read in German, English, and French.  He married 23 Feb 1892, Elizabeth Animous, who died 14 Mar 1918.  They had eight children, Mrs. Alivani Reischauer, Martin Rudert, Laura Peterson, of Balcom, Henrietta Bartsch, and Vestus Cruse, of Cobden, Joe Rudert, Fred Rudert, and Albert Rudert, at home.  He married on 10 Apr 1919, Josephine Animous, who survives.  He also left a brother, Gottleib Rudert, of Germany.

Iva Nora (Standard) Lentz died 7 Mar 1934, at the home of her daughter, Mabel Jordan, in Elco, Alexander County, of pneumonia, aged 65 years, 4 days, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County.  Her funeral was at Elco Methodist Episcopal Church.  She was born 3 Mar 1869, in Jonesboro, the youngest of four children of Fields and Mary Standard.  She married on 31 Jul 1892, Cicero Lentz, who died 6 Nov 1926.  They had six children.  She was a charter member of Beech Grove Methodist Episcopal Church near Ullin.  She left four children, Leola Emory, of Alto Pass, Loren Lentz, of Ullin, Pulaski County, Mabel Jordan, of Elco, and Jennie Walton, of Ullin; a sister, Lottie Leming, of Oklahoma City, Okla; and nine grandchildren.

Margaret Louise Stone died 5 Mar 1934, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., aged 11 months, 20 days.  She was born 16 Mar 1933, the only child of Fount Stone, of Wolf Lake.  She left her parents, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Stone; and several aunts and uncles, including Effie Frogge.

Arthur T. Stevens died 28 Feb 1934, at home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Bullington, on Chestnut street in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was a bootblack for a number of years.  He left a widow and a daughter.

George Thomas Davis died 7 Mar 1934, at home on South Street in Anna, aged 72 years, 8 months, 15 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 20 May 1861, at Humesville, near Kansas City, Mo., the son of Solomon and Nancy Davis.  He joined First Baptist Church at Meadville, Mo., when he was 21.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Meadville.  He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 25 years, retiring on 1 Dec 1925.  He married in 1906, Mrs. Minnie Lackey, who survives.  He also left a brother, William Davis, of Salem, Ore.

Jesse A. Parker died Wednesday (14 Mar 1934) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. T. Rodman, onLincoln Street in Anna, and was buried at Makanda, Jackson County.  His funeral was at home.

Margaret Ellen (Penninger) Hargrave died 11 Mar 1934, at the home of her daughter, Reola wife of Tom Ferguson, in Springfield, Mo., and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church in Anna.  She was born 2 Feb 1860, two and a half miles northeast of Dongola, the daughter of George W. and Mary Frances Penninger.   She joined Big Creek Baptist Church as a young girl and transferred to First Baptist Church in Jonesboro and then to First Baptist Church in Anna.  She was a charter member of Eastern Star Lodge of Dongola and member of Margaret Rebekah Lodge of Jonesboro.  She married on 23 Jan 1887, Allen Hargrave.  They had one daughter.  She also left a grandson, Garin Hargrave Ferguson; one stepson, Arthur Hargrave, of Monrovia, Calif.; two step daughters, Jessie Baysinger, of Grand Tower, and Nannie Keyser, of Jonesboro; four step grandchildren, Sterret Baysinger and Jean Baysinger, Jeanette Hargrave, and Frances Keyser; four brothers, T. J. Penninger, Silas Penninger, Clarence Penninger, and Charlie Penninger; five sisters, Laura I. Lombard, Lottie Garrott, Mattie J. Hileman, Georgia Karraker, and Lizzie Verble.

Jessify (Pirtle) Frost died Thursday (8 May 1934) at the home of her daughter, from pneumonia, aged 86 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Missionary Baptist church in Alto Pass.  She was the widow of William Frost, who died many years ago when their children were small.  She left one brother, Luther Pirtle, of Alto Pass; one sister, Caroline Nipper, of Pomona, Jackson County; five children, Ida Smith, Cora Kinder, Mary Smith, Henry Frost, and James Frost, of Carbondale, Jackson County; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.  Willie Frost, son of James Frost, was a grandson.

Mrs. William Earnhart of near Dongola died.

23 Mar 1934:

Eugene Lirely died Wednesday (21 Mar 1934) north of Cobden in an automobile crash, aged 17 years.  He was the son of Oscar W. Lirely, of Cobden.  Charles Broadway, aged 18 years, the son of Mayor Broadway, of Cobden, was driving.

Elizabeth (Weber) Schaefer died 20 Mar 1934, at home southwest of Jonesboro, aged 71 years, 9 months, 26 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She suffered a stroke on 28 Jan 1934.  Her funeral was at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran (Kornthal) Church, which she joined in her childhood.  She was born 25 May 1862, in Weingarten, Germany, the daughter of Peter and Marie Weber.  When 2 years old she came to America and lived on a farm about five miles southwest of Jonesboro.  Her father died when she was 4, leaving her mother to rear four sons and two daughters.  She was educated in the parochial schools of her church.  She married on 8 Jan 1889, Joseph Schaefer, who died 10 Jul 1930. They had four children, Walter J. Schaefer, of Peoria, Freida Hileman, of Anna, Carl H. Schaefer and Paul F. Schaefer, of Jonesboro.  She also left four grandchildren.  (See also 30 Mar 1934, issue.) 

Frank Reiss died 21 Jan 1934, at Breslau, Germany, of infirmities of old age, aged nearly 80 years.  He lived in Jonesboro many years with his aunt, Catherine Reiss.  He was a porter at the Anna Hotel 15 years and returned to Germany five years ago.

F. M. McGinnis died 12 Mar 1934, at home in Lick Creek, aged 84 years, 7 months, 13 days, and was buried in Ebenezer Hall Cemetery.  His funeral was at Ebenezer Church, two miles west of Lick Creek.  He was born 29 Jul 1849, in Union County.  He married on 1 Oct 1868, Sarah Keller, who died 14 Feb 1915.  They had one daughter, Levia McGinnis.  He married on 1 Jun 1916, Sarah J. Miles, who survives.  He was a charter member of Evergreen Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 581 in Lick Creek, organized 13 Oct 1875. 

 
30 Mar 1934:

Mary Foltz died last Friday (23 Mar 1934) of a sudden heart attack, and was buried at Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County.  She was the wife of the Rev. M. C. Foltz, pastor of First Methodist Church in Centralia.  He used to be pastor of the Methodist church in Jonesboro.

Lula (Knupp) Sigroves died 24 Mar 1934, aged 23 years, 3 months, 14 days, and was buried in Walker Cemetery at Grand Tower, Jackson County.  Her funeral was at the Pentecost church.  She was born 10 Nov 1910, the daughter of Joe C. Knupp, of Jonesboro.  Her father preceded her in death.  She left her husband, two children, Gladys Sigroves, aged 6 years, and Margie Ann Sigroves, aged 3 days; her mother, five brothers, and three sisters.

Mrs. Stanley (Davis) Kinder died 26 Mar 1934, at Hale-Willard Memorial Hospital (Anna City Hospital), aged 25 years, 11 months, 16 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Ware.  She was born at Mill Creek, the daughter of Alonzo Davis, of Mill Creek.  She left her husband, two children, Howard Leon Kinder and Lula Ray Kinder.

Martin Bauerman died at Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He was a relative of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Corzine. 

6 Apr 1934:

Mary (Hambyck) Crowell died  1 Apr 1934, at home near Reynoldsville, aged 69 years, 24 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Reynoldsville Baptist Church, of which she was one of the oldest members.  She was born 8 Mar 1865, at Grand Chain, Pulaski County, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Hambyck.  She married on 4 Apr 1881, Benjamin Crowell.  They had eight children.  She left four children, Maude Housman, Cora McCraven, and Annie McCraven, of Jonesboro, and Vessy Perkins, of Anna; and 21 grandchildren.

 
13 Apr 1934:

Hattie Chapman died 9 Apr 1934, at home in Alto Pass, of pneumonia, aged 51 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church in Alto Pass.  She left her husband, four sons, and two daughters.

Harry Kenneth Rosenthal died 5 Apr 1934, aged 5 days, and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 31 Mar 1934, the son of William and Willie (Allen) Rosenthal.  He left his parents, two grandmothers, two grandfathers, two great-grandmothers, several aunts, and uncles.  (See also 7 Apr 1934, issue.)

Harry L. Brown accidentally shot and killed himself last Sunday (8 Apr 1934) at Wolf Lake.  He was polishing his automobile when his pistol slipped from its holster, struck the fender of his car, and discharged.  He was from Anna and worked at Atlas Powder Company near Wolf Lake as night watchman.  He left a widow and several children. 

John W. Hess died Wednesday last week (4 Apr 1934) at home.

20 Apr 1934:

Margaret J. Frick died last week at the home of her son, Robert N. Frick, at 441 South Lucerne Blvd., Los Angeles, Calif., and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.  Her funeral was at her son's home.  She was born 22 Jul 1847, on a farm near Carnegie, Pa.  She was related to the James Bell family of Cobden.  She married in 1879 Jackson "Jack" Frick, a Jonesboro attorney.  She was principal of Jonesboro public schools for two years after his death, before moving to Los Angeles in 1885.  She brought her two sons, Robert Frick and Donald Frick with her.  She was a teacher in River Street School and became head of the English Department at Los Angeles High School.  She became principal there in 1892.  She retired in 1902. She left two sons, Attorney Robert Frick and Dr. Donald Frick and five grandchildren.

Donald Arthur LeFever died 14 Apr 1934, at the home of his mother, Ruth LeFever, in Anna, of pneumonia, aged 20 years, 10 months, 22 days, and was buried in Richwood Cemetery near Unity, Alexander County.  His funeral was at Norris Funeral Home.

Fred H. Horn died  10 Apr 1934, at St. Mary's Hospital in Galesburg, aged 79 years.  He had been hospitalized since he fell and broke his hip on 26 Feb 1934.  He came to Anna at the age of 29 and worked at the state hospital and as a plumber for James Norris Hardware Store.  He had lived at Galesburg with a son for the past five years.  He married in 1886, Emma Wiggs.  He left four children.

A. F. "Uncle Frank" Irwin died Monday (16 Apr 1934) at home north of Balcom, of cancer, aged nearly 89 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  His funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home in Anna.  He was born 12 Aug 1845.  He left a widow, two nephews, and one niece, all of near Springfield, Sangamon County.

27 Apr 1934:

Anna K. (Schaefer) Pickel died 24 Apr 1934, at home south of Jonesboro, aged 70 years and 9 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Kornthal Lutheran Church.  She was born 11 Jul 1863, in Jonesboro, one of seven children of Jacob and Theresa Schaefer.  She attended the Lutheran school at Kornthal and was confirmed there 15 Apr 1877.  She married on 8 Oct 1879, John Pickel, who died in 1889.  They had three children, of whom one died in infancy.  She left one sister, Josephine Mayer, of Olmsted, Pulaski County; one daughter, Mrs. August Bruchhauser, of Anna; and one son, John Pickel, of Jonesboro; and five grandchildren.

Ralph Wilburn of Mill Creek died 24 Apr 1934, at Hale-Willard Memorial Hospital, of ruptured gangrenous appendix.  He was admitted to the hospital 21 Apr 1934.

4 May 1934:

Velma Beatrice Beaver died 28 Apr 1934, at Anna City Hospital, aged 23 years, 4 months, 1 day, and was buried in Morgan Cemetery, west of Jonesboro.  She was the daughter of James H. and Alice Beaver, of near Wolf Lake.  Her parents died when she was about 3 years old and she was raised by relatives.   She left two grandmothers, Catherine Gettings, of Wolf Lake, and Susan Rothrock, of Ilmo, Mo.; several uncles and aunts, and 24 cousins.

Elizabeth I. Anderson died 2 May 1934, at Hale-Willard Memorial Hospital in Anna, of heart trouble, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Norris Funeral Home.  She left two sisters and two brothers.

Rev. John D. Shaddrick died 29 Apr 1934, following paralytic strokes, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Methodist Church.  He was born 22 Dec 1870, at Dongola, the son of John Shaddrick, now deceased.  He married 20 Sep 1892, at Lebanon, Ill., Mamie A. Spurr.  They had four children, of whom one daughter died in infancy.  He left Mrs. George Brubaker, of Robinson, John M. Shaddrick, of San Diego, Calif., and Lawrence D. Shaddrick, at home; and one sister, Mrs. J.C. DeWitt, of Anna.

Vincent Raymond Staudt drowned 19 Apr 1934, in Ohio River, aged 14 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  His funeral was at the home of his aunt, Helen (Brown) Sadler, on North Main Street in Anna.  He was a student at Tilghman High School.  He had taken a small metal boat he had built to the river to try it.  A companion, Preston Gray, age 15, warned him the river was too rough, but he took it out anyway.  The boat sank a short distance and his body was found in an eddy north of Fort Massac Park at Metropolis, Massac County, 10 days later.  He was the son of Anna (Brown) Staudt, of Paducah, Ky.

William Hancock committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor, over his financial conditions.  He lived on a farm west of Goreville, Johnson County, with his brother Ernest Hancock.

Sandy Karraker died Tuesday (1 May 1934) at home near Chapel Church.

11 May 1934:

William A. "Billie" Hacker died 6 May 1934, at East Moline, following a stroke of apoplexy on 4 Apr 1934, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the home of his sister, Mrs. W. A. Kelley, in Jonesboro.  He was born 3 Jun 1869, in Jonesboro, the son of the late Dr. H. C. and Nancy B. Hacker.  He married on 6 Jun 1900, Addie Montgomery, daughter of Joe Montgomery.  He was deputy postmaster in Jonesboro.  He moved to Anna in 1917 and worked at the state hospital.  He and his wife moved to East Moline to live with his daughter, Kora McCorkle.  He left a widow and two daughters, Kora McCorkle and Kittie Cheston, of Miami, Fla; two sister, Mrs. W. A. Kelley, of Jonesboro, and Sadie Wiggins, of Anna; and two grandsons.  (See also 19 May 1934.)

Charles M. Anderson died 6 May 1934, at the home of his daughter in Phoenix, Ariz.  His funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home in Anna.

Lucy Nimmo died and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She left Anna 27 years ago.  Her remains were accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. Al Martindale, of Denver, Colo.

Grace (Goodman) Rader died last Thursday (3 May 1934) at home in Anna, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Anna.  She was born 27 Oct 1887, in Cobden, the daughter of A. J. Goodman.  She married on 2 Dec 1906, was the wife of Robert Rader.  They had six children, of whom one preceded her in death. 

Sanford Corzine died 3 May 1934, at Anna City Hospital, from gallstones and cancer of the bladder and liver, and was buried in Union Cemetery.  His funeral was at Big Creek Baptist Church.  He left his widow, four sons, Harry Corzine and Roy Corzine, of Terre Haute, Ind., Glen Corzine of Centralia, and Lester Corzine, of Balcom; one daughter, Velma Corzine, of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Belle Gourley, of Carbondale, Jackson County; two brothers, David Corzine and Truman Corzine, of Balcom; three grandchildren.  Mrs. Clarence Absher and Mrs. Harold Garritson, of Paducah, Ky., were nieces.

 
18 May 1934:

Mrs. W. O. (Hunsaker) Barrett died 25 Apr 1934, in a hospital in Veneta, Okla.  She had been an invalid for several years.  She was the daughter of Walter Hunsaker.  She married in 1912.  She left her husband, four children, father, stepmother, two sisters, one brother, several uncles and aunts.

Lucy Graham died 10 May 1934, at home in Little Rock, Ark., and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Norris Chapel in Anna.  She was born in 1860 in Kentucky, the daughter of Ace and Margaret (Welch) Graham. 

Morris Kimber died 13 May 1934, at his farm home, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born 20 Jan 1864, the son of the Rev. V.K. Kimber.  He married on 13 Oct 1896, Edna Lee Avett.  They had five sons.  He left his widow and three sons, Merrill Kimber, of Dongola, Paul Kimber, on the farm, and Frank Kimber, of Anna; three grandchildren, and one sister, Florence Kimber, of Jonesboro.

25 May 1934:

Calvin Ellis died 18 May 1934, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  His funeral was at the home where he had lived for 55 years.  He was born 6 Feb 1856, north of Anna, the son of James and Louisa Ellis.  He married on 4 Mar 1879, Elizabeth Hartline.  They had six daughters and six sons.  He was preceded in death by Helen E. Ellis, a granddaughter, on 20 Jun 1931.  He joined Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church on 6 Jan 1906.  He left six sons and five daughters, Paul H. Ellis, S. Franklin Ellis, Fanny A. Grear, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Sidney M. Hartman, Charles F. Ellis, of Carbondale, Jackson County, Claude E. Ellis, of McClure, Alexander County, Anna L. Ellis, Maude M. Ellis, of Anna, Nell G. Mueller, of Webster Grove, Mo., George J. Ellis, of Anna, James C. Ellis, of Des Moines, Iowa; 24 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Emma Hubbs died Tuesday (22 May 1934) at Anna State Hospital, aged 56 years, 11 months, 27 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born and reared in Union County.  She left four brothers, Robert Hubbs, Cleveland Hubbs, and James Hubbs, of Wolf Lake, and Will Hubbs, of Anna; two sisters, Mrs., Leonard Stroehlein, of Cobden and Mrs. Jack McMillan, of Marion, Williamson County.

 
1 Jun 1934:

Henry W. Otrich died Wednesday (30 May 1934) at his farm home near Dongola, aged 82 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at Dongola Baptist church.  He left two sons, F. L.  Otrich and M. E. Otrich, of Dongola, and two daughters, Mrs. G. W. Hindman and Mrs. A. G. Bizzell, of Anna.

T. R. Grace died last Sunday (27 May 1934) at home on Heacock Street in Jonesboro, of cancer, aged 76 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Anna.  He was a farmer near Reynoldsville before coming to Jonesboro to live.  He left his widow, three sons, and two daughters.

 
8 Jun 1934:

Martha Augusta Keller died 6 Jun 1934, at home on Jasper Street in Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at home.  She was born and reared on a farm a few miles south of Jonesboro, the daughter of Edward Poole.  She married on 24 Dec 1896, Ernest A. Keller.  She and her husband lived in an apartment in the Keller building on Jonesboro square and she assisted her husband in the store.  A few days before her death she asked to be taken to her home on Jasper Street to die.  She left her husband, four children, Mrs. Allan Buell, of Detroit, Mich., George Keller, of Charleston, W. Va., Roy Keller, of Springfield, Sangamon County,. and Floyd E. Keller, of Jonesboro; four grandchildren, four sisters, Allie Lawrence, of Mill Creek, Josie Jenkins, of Anna, Mae Dillow, of St. Louis, and Carrie Woltman, of Bloomington; two brothers, Dr. W. E. Poole, of Kirkwood, Mo., and Ernest Poole, of San Francisco, Calif.

Oliver Jacob "Jake" Storm died  6 Jun 1934, at home in Enid, Okla., aged 69 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church.  He was born in Decaturville, Tenn., the son of Oliver P. and Emily Storm.  The family moved to Jonesboro in the 1870s.  He learned telegraphy under F. P. Grear in the Mobile & Ohio Railroad offices.   He became train dispatcher for Frisco, Union Pacific and other lines.  He married in 1891 in Jonesboro, Flora Rhymer, youngest daughter of Jerry Rhymer. They had one son, George Storm, of New York City, a well-known cartoonist.  He was a member of the Presbyterian church in Enid, a 32nd degree Scottish rite Mason and a member of the Temple at Guthrie, Okla.  He left his widow, one son, two sisters, Mrs. James E. Walton, of Anna, and Martha Willard, of San Antonio, Texas; a brother-in-law, Robert Renfro, of Carbondale, Jackson County; three sisters-in-law, Mary Rhymer, Hattie Rhymer, and Clara Walker.  (See also 15 Jun 1934, issue.)

Richard Chapman died in a hospital in Denison, Texas.  His funeral was at Vienna, Johnson County.  He was a veteran of World War I, serving as a lieutenant in the machine gun corps.  He was a nephew of the late Congressman P. T. Chapman, of Vienna.

Harry Michaels was killed last Monday (4 Jun 1934) in an explosion at the powder plant in Wolf Lake.  His funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church in Wolf Lake.  He was born 9 Aug 1887, in Lima, Ohio.  He came to Wolf Lake in 1915.  He enlisted in 1917 in World War I and was in the service over three years.  He married on 16 Sep 1922, Mrs. Minnie Caraker.  He had worked at the plant for 10 years.  He left four children and five stepchildren.

Thomas Pelley died 4 Jun 1933, at St. Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo., of kidney and heart trouble, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anna.  He was born 16 Jun 1875, in Anna, the son of Joseph Pelley.  He used to live in Anna, but moved to Ilmo, Mo., 23 years ago.  He never married.  He left two brothers, Joseph Pelley, of Ilmo, Mo., and John J. Pelley, president of the New York, Hartford, and New Haven Railroad, of New Haven, Conn.; two sisters, Mrs. John Coffman o Anna and Mrs. T. O. Garrett, of Hopkins, Minn.

 
15 Jun 1934:

Samuel Albert Allen died 11 Jun 1934, at Holden Hospital in Carbondale, Jackson County, after being struck by a train, aged 19 years, 5 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Pentecostal Church in Anna.  He was born 2 Jan 1915, at Granite City, Ill.  He moved with his parents to Jonesboro when 6 years old.  At the age of 15 he entered A-J High School.  He left home on 8 Jun 1934, and told his father he was going to the library in Cairo or St. Louis to study.  He left his parents, four sisters, Mrs. C. E. Garland, of Oakland City, Ind., Mrs. John J. Hubart, of Chicago, Dorothy Wilson and Jennie Allen, both of Jonesboro. 

A boy named Rendleman was accidentally killed a few miles south of Cape Girardeau, Mo., aged 16 years, and was buried Wednesday (13 Jun 1934) in Cobden Cemetery.

Everett Elmer Lingle died 13 Jun 1934, aged 37 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Jonesboro, which he joined in November 1930.  He was born 12 Oct 1896, the oldest son of Robert A. and Izora (Thorp) Lingle.  He married on 18 Mar 1928, Marie Hogg, of Vienna, Johnson County.  They had one daughter, Opal June Lingle, deceased.  He was an automobile mechanic.  He left his parents, one brother, Ray Lingle, of Jonesboro; a grandmother, Mattie Lindsey; several uncles, aunts, nephews, and nieces.  (See also 22 Jun 1934, issue.)

Henry Huelson died 10 June 1934, at home in Jonesboro, aged 80 years, 2 months, 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Jonesboro.  He was born 4 Apr 1854, at Freeburg, Germany, the son of John and Margaret Huelson.  He came to America at the age of 28 and located at Sandoval.  He was a farmer in Germany and America.  He joined the Evangelical Church under Rev. Nitche and transferred to Ebenezer Evangelical Church south of Jonesboro.  He married on 2 Feb 1886, Mary Ann Kohler.  They had seven children, Lillian Mehnert, who died 21 Sep 1918, Henry Huelson, of Carbondale, Addie M. Dillow, of St. Louis, Huldah Duschl, of Jonesboro, Herbert Huelson, of Anna, Annie Bernhard, and Edith Lingle, of Jonesboro.  He moved to Union County on 15 Aug 1887, and continued farming until 22 Apr 1930, when he moved to Jonesboro.  He left his widow, two sons, four daughters, nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a nephew in Chicago.

James P. Russell died 6 Jun 1934, at home on Aroma Park Road in Kankakee, aged 84 years, and was buried in Mound Grove Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 28 Apr 1850, at Pendleton, Ind., one of 10 children of A. E. and Caroline S. Russell.  At the age of 16 he enlisted in Gen. Custer's Cavalry and was an Indian fighter until 1870.  He also worked for the federal revenue service.  He moved to Kankakee in October 1885.  He was engineer at Kankakee state hospital and in 1891 became city marshal.  He was appointed deputy sheriff in 1898.  In 1902 he was appointed mail carrier and in  1906 was elected sheriff.  In 1911 he was appointed superintendent of the county farm.  In March 1913 he moved to his late home.  He married on 24 Nov 1886, Helen M. Andrews, of Jonesboro, a sister of George J Andrews.  His son, Horace Russell was killed 8 Jul 1905, in a railroad accident at the state hospital.  He left his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Lussell Tobenski; and one brother, Hamilton Russell, of Buffalo.—Kankakee Republican News, June 6.

Frances E. Willard died Wednesday (20 Jun 1934) in Cairo, Alexander County.

Mary A. (Sowers) Scott died Monday (18 Jun 1934) at home, of infirmities of old age, aged 82 years, 6 months, 8 days.  Her funeral was on the lawn of her home.    She was born 10 Dec 1851, in Jonesboro, the daughter of David and Mary Sowers.  She graduated from Southern Illinois Normal University in Carbondale and taught school in Jonesboro and Murphysboro, Jackson County, and Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County. She married in 1898 Capt. J. C. Scott, of Carbondale, who died 30 years ago.  She lived the last 15 years with her brother, J. C. Sowers, and her sister, Mrs. J. W. Grear, on the old homestead north of Jonesboro fairgrounds.  She also left two nephews, D. C. Grear, of Herrin, Williamson County, and Fred Grear, of Grantsburg.  (See also 29 Jun 1934, issue.)

Esther (Corzine) Leyerle died 14 Jun 1934, at Jonesboro, aged 72 years, 3 months,7 days, and was buried in Union Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Big Creek Baptist Church, which she joined 40 years ago.  She was born 7 Mar 1862, near Dongola, the daughter of Noah and Elizabeth Corzine.  She married on 26 Aug 1881, Andrew J. Leyerle.  Three children preceded her in death, Almina Leyerle, Lewis Leyerle, Edgar Leyerle.   She left two sons, Elvis Leyerle and Hoyt Leyerle; nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. 

Josie Cover died 20 Jun 1934, at home in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Norris Funeral Home in Anna.  She was the widow of J. R. Cover.  She left one daughter, Mrs. Vernon H. Boyd, with whom she resided.

Rev. Frank Baldwin died in Florida.  He was a former resident of Mountain Glen and one of the first pastor of Walnut Grove Methodist Episcopal Church.

29 Jun 1934:

Charles H. "Charley" Chase died 25 Jun 1934 at home on Jasper Street in Jonesboro, of heart disease, aged 70 years, 6 months, 19 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 6 Jan 1864, in Jonesboro, the son of Charles S. and Ellen (Cruse) Chase.  He learned the masonry trade early in manhood.  He worked not only in Illinois, but also in Bowling Green, Ky., and completed the cross on the Episcopal church in Cairo, Alexander County.  He was a member of Jonesboro Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge No. 241,  and was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He operated a mercantile business in Jonesboro called Chase & Smith.  He married on 15 Oct 1890, May Dougherty, of Jonesboro, a descendant of Lt. Gov. John Dougherty.  They had one child, a son who died in infancy.  He left his widow, one brother, Arthur Chase, of Lubbock, Texas; five sisters, Gertrude Brodex and Virginia Hall, of Los Angeles, Calif., Della Bentley, of Clinton, Emma Bos, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Mary Barringer, of Anna; nephews and nieces.

Lester Bloodworth was killed Wednesday (27 Jun 1934) in an automobile accident near Lick Creek, aged 30 years.  He was riding on the fender of an auto that was struck by a car driven by the Rev. Kiestler.

Mrs. Samuel Jackson died, aged 91 years.  She was the oldest citizen of Vienna, Johnson County.  She was the daughter of John Bain, a pioneer businessman in Vienna.  Her husband used to work for Caleb Frick, a merchant in Jonesboro, before the Civil War.  He moved to Vienna and started his own business.  She left several children.  John B. Jackson, president of Anna National Bank, was a son.

Frances “Fannie” (Williford) Willard died 20 Jun 1934, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. L. Jarvis, in Cairo, Alexander County, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born 10 Oct 1851, in Jonesboro (or in Murfreesboro, Tenn.), the daughter of C. H. Williford.  Her father moved from Tennessee to Jonesboro and became a businessman there.  She married in 1874 Charles F. Willard, a son of Willis Willard.  Her husband died about 25 years ago, leaving the widow and seven children.  Her children were May wife of J. A. Jones, of Cobden; Helen wife of Fred Bacon, and Jessie wife of M. J. Boyle, of Monrovia, Calif.; Glenn Willard and Leslie Willard, of Monrovia, Calif.; Charles Willard, of Austin, Texas; and Edith wife of R. L. Jarvis, of Cairo.  She also left 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Everett Williford, of San Antonio, Texas, and Emmett Williford, of Jonesboro.  Richard Jarvis, of Cairo, was a grandson, and William Williford, son of Everett, of San Antonio, Texas, was a nephew.  Her nephew, Charles C. Williford, of Springfield, Mo., wrote a tribute that was published in the newspaper.

Mary Sims was killed Monday (25 Jun 1934) after she was struck by a car driven by Finley Cobb, of Evansville, Ind., on the hard road two miles east of Anna, aged 63 years.

Thomas Jefferson Penninger died 23 Jun 1934, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Anna.  He was born 23 Sep 1858, within one and a half miles of his present home east of Anna.  He married 51 years ago, Ellen Bean, daughter of Josiah and Caroline (Hileman) Bean.  He lived in the Camp Ground community.  He left four children, Eva Penninger, Virgie Menees, Roy Penninger, and Mrs. Eli Davis, all of Anna.

Esther Lyerle died.  She used to live at Balcom. 

6 Jul 1934:

Anton George Christianson died 5 Jul 1934, at Anna City Hospital, aged 73 years.  He lived several miles south of Jonesboro.  He was admitted to the hospital on 3 Jul 1934 (13 Jul 1934, issue).

Elizabeth (Squares) Minton died 4 Jul 1934, at the home of her son-in-law, James Bartlett, in Jonesboro, aged 86 years, 5 months, 4 days.  She was born 29 Jan 1848.  Her aged husband died five years ago.  She left five children, Mary Calhoun, Caroline Bartlett, Jess Mixen, Oliver Mixen, and John Mixen; 25 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  (See also 13 Jul 1934, issue.)

Infant daughter of W. A. Roderick died at home on Jasper Street in Jonesboro, of whooping cough, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Ruth (Coomes) Crowell died 2 Jul 1934, in a hospital in St. Louis, following a minor operation on a tumor, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at home.  She was born 4 Apr 1911, near Jonesboro, the daughter of Daniel S. and Ada L. Coomes.  She graduated in 1929 from A-J Community High School.  She attended First Christian Church in Anna and was baptized 16 Jan 1927 and joined the church.  She married on 18 Jan 1934, at Ancel, Mo., Bertram Crowell.  She left her husband, her parents, of Jonesboro, and three brothers, Dewey Coomes, of Wolf Lake, Daniel Coomes and William Coomes, of Jonesboro; four sisters, Ada Callans, Abbie Nicolaides, and Ruby Coomes, all of Jonesboro, Maude St. Pierre, of East St. Louis; one half-sister, Mrs. Delia Pryor, of McClure; and nephews and nieces.

William Grammer died 30 Jun 1934, at home in Jonesboro, aged 84 years, 10 months, 11 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro.  He was born 19 Aug 1849, the son of Jacob and Susan Grammer.  He was a constable for 25 years or more in the Mississippi Bottoms.  He lived in Union County his entire life, except for six years spent in Jackson County.  He was a farmer.  Sixteen years ago he moved to Jonesboro and served two terms as justice of the peace.  He married at the age of 19 to Sarah Delves.  She and their infant child died in less than one year of the marriage.  He married in 1877, Frances Ann Keith.  They had two sons and three daughters.  He used to be an active member of Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Ware.  He left five children, Mrs. Abe Roberts, of DuQuoin, Mrs. D. M. Butler, of Chicago, Mrs. John Morgan, of Ware, James Grammer, of Wolf Lake, and W. J. Grammer, of Jonesboro; 29 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

13 Jul 1934:

Gilbert Allen Atkins died 6 Jul 1934, at the home of his grandfather, Wilford Jackson, near Ware, aged 18 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Reynoldsville.  He left his mother, Rose Atkins, of Chicago; and one brother, Horace Atkins, of Ware.

Adam M. L. Miller died last Friday (6 Jul 1934) at home near St. John's Church, due to infirmities of old age, aged 86 years,  and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  He was born and reared near where he died.  He was one of 11 children, all deceased.  He never married. 

Thadeus H. Rhodes died 27 Jun 1934, in Oakland, Calif., of heart affliction and a stroke.  He was born in 1870 in Toulon, Ill.  He graduated in 1893 from Oberlin College in Ohio and received a degree from Harvard in 1898.  He was sent as a teacher to the Philippine Islands in 1901, where he instructed children of American officials until 1906.  He was the former principal at Union Academy in Anna and at the time of his death was principal of Francisco Junior High School.  He married Agnes Jinnette, daughter of E. R. Jinnette, formerly of Anna.  He left a widow and three sons.

Mary Anderson died.  She lived in West Frankfort, Franklin County.  She left five children, four living in West Frankfort Heights and Ed Troutt, of Clear Creek.

20 Jul 1934:

Adda "Addie" (Montgomery) Hacker died 18 Jul 1934, at home in Moline, aged 64 years, 2 months, 12 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside her husband.  Her funeral was at the home of W. A. Kelley, in Jonesboro.  She was born 6 May 1870, near Goreville, Johnson County, the daughter of Joseph Montgomery.  She married on 3 May 1900, William A. Hacker, of Jonesboro, who recently died.  She was a member of the Baptist Church.  She left two daughters, Cora McCorkle, of East Moline, and Kittie Cheston, of Miami, Fla; two grandchildren, three brothers, John Montgomery, of Arkansas, Riley Montgomery and Al Montgomery, of Anna; and one sister, Lillie Foster, of Goreville.  (See also 27 Jul 1934, issue.)

R. E. Carney died 22 May 1934, at Baptist Ministers’ and Old People's Home in Maywood, aged 80 years, 10 months, 21 days.  He was born in Virginia and began preaching in 1875.  He and his wife entered the home in Maywood in January 1934.  He was pastor of Jonesboro Baptist church for several years before resigning about 1912.

Mrs. George Hearns died.  Her funeral was last Thursday (12 Jul 1934) at Paducah, Ky.  She was the niece of Mrs. J. L. Wahl, of Anna.

27 Jul 1934:

John Dillinger was shot and killed last Sunday (22 Jul 1934) as he was leaving a movie show in Chicago.

3 Aug 1934:

John Crawford Biles died 1 Aug 1934, at home on South Main Street in Jonesboro, of infirmities of old age, aged 86 years, 11 months, 29 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church.  He was born 3 Aug 1847, near Mt. Pleasant, Cabarrus Co., N.C.  He was a Confederate soldier, enlisting at the age of 17.  His father, one of the last men killed at the Battle of Appomattox in the fighting around Richmond, Va., wrote and advised him to "stay with it to the end."  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rowan Co., N.C.  He married on 14 Feb 1871, Elizabeth A. Goodman.  When 23 years old he and his wife came to Union County and lived several years with his wife's father, Moses A. Goodman, on their farm near St. John's Church.  They then bought a farm six miles east of Anna near Camp Ground Church, where they lived 21 years. Here he affiliated with Camp Ground Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  They sold the farm and moved to Jonesboro in 1901, and he continued to work as street commissioner and janitor at the courthouse.  He joined Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.    He had one son, Thomas J. Biles, who died of pneumonia while at student at Southern Illinois Normal University at Carbondale, Jackson County, when 21 years old.  He left his widow, an aged sister, Mrs. M. J. Blackwelder, of Concord, N.C.; and several nephews and nieces living in North Carolina.  (See also 10 Aug 1934, issue.)

Samuel Flager Walton died Monday (30 Jul 1934) in St. Andrew's Hospital in Murphysboro, Jackson County, of acute stomach trouble, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home.  He was born 6 Aug 1873, on the Walton farm east of Anna, the youngest of seven children of James K. and Serena (Davie) Walton.  He was educated at Union Academy and took dental courses at Northwestern University, graduating in 1896.  He went to Chicago in 1903 and practiced his profession until 1929, when he retired due to ill health.  He married on 18 Nov 1898, Sibyl Parks.  He left his widow, four brothers, Edward B. Walton, James K. Walton, and William B. Walton, of Anna, and Dr. Charles A. Walton, of Chicago.

Calvin A. Smith died 27 Jul 1934, of heart attack, ascending the stairs at the Union County courthouse, aged 83 years, 1 month, 27 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro.  He was born 30 May 1851, on the banks of Hudgeon's Creek, the son of Andrew and Juanita Smith.  He was a farmer there.  He married in 1871 Melvina Lilly.  They had two children and his wife died when his second child was 2 years old.  He married on 21 Apr 1878, Eliza J. Harris, who died eight years ago.  They had four children, of whom one preceded him in death.  He was a charter member of Beech Grove Free Baptist Church and a deacon.  He moved to Jonesboro years ago and lived on Ferry Avenue.  He was township treasurer.  He left five children, Leora Smith, of Beech Grove community, Edith Frost, of Carbondale, Jackson County, Eric Smith, of Jonesboro, Dona Leyerle, of Balcom, Letha Smith, of Jonesboro.; one sister, Ritta Miller, of Alto Pass, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one aunt, Clarissa Smith, of Murphysboro, Jackson County.

Robert Harry Lawrence died Saturday (28 Jul 1934) at home in Cobden, of angina pectoris, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  His funeral was on the lawn of his home.  He was born 3 Nov 1873, at Cobden, the son of Isaac Henry and Catharine (Caldwell) Lawrence.  He attended St. Louis Business College.  He married on 21 Nov 1894, Olie McWilliams, of Hillsboro, who died 24 Aug 1919, at St. Louis.  His wife was buried at Hillsboro.  They had two children, Mrs. Marion Baker, of Cobden, and Katherine L. Ede, of Anna.  He married on 12 Sep 1923, Josephine Henderson, of Cobden.  He was a Mason.  He was a miller with his father.  He installed Cobden's first electric plant, which he sold several years ago to Central Illinois Public Service Co., and was an electrician.  He was a member of the board of education at Cobden, the Blue Masonic Lodge at Cobden, the Chapter at Anna, the Council at Murphysboro, the Commandry at Carbondale, and the Consistory at East St. Louis.  He left his widow, two daughters, one sister, Elizabeth Sumner, of Cobden; and two brothers, Herbert D. Lawrence, of Anna, and Randall Lawrence, of Cobden.

Charley Brown died Monday (30 Jul 1934) at a hospital in Indiana, of heat prostration suffered while working on the hard road, aged 40 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Alto Pass.  He was born in Alto Pass, the son of Walter Brown.  He left his widow, Ruth Brown, his father, stepmother, one sister, Helen Bradford; and two brothers, Edward Brown and Ogle Brown.

Harrison Elkins died last Friday (27 Jul 1934) and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

10 Aug 1934:

Bobbie Baker died 7 Aug 1934, at Anna City Hospital.  He was from Dongola.

17 Aug 1934:

Barry Dougherty died Tuesday (14 Aug 1934) in a hospital at Cape Girardeau, Mo., following an operation for stomach cancer, aged about 62 years, and was buried at Thebes, Alexander County.  He was born in Jonesboro, the second son of Alex N. Dougherty.  He married a daughter of James N. Alsup.  He left his widow, children, one brother, Will Dougherty, of Anna; three sisters, May Chase, Emma Hacker, and Kate Sarsfield, all of Jonesboro.

Ira Pearce was shot and killed in October 1933, at a sand and gravel plant at Pacific, Mo., by George Broyles, of Pacific, Mo.  Broyles pleaded temporary insanity, but was sentenced to life in prison.  Pearce lived in St. Louis.  Broyles used to live in Jonesboro, was a carpenter, and built the Methodist church in Jonesboro.

Ruth D. Baggott died 14 Aug 1934, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James L. McFadden, in Anna.  She was born 11 Nov 1845, at Shrewsbury, England.  She came to America at the age of 4.  She married O. P. Baggott and lived many years in Anna and Jonesboro.  He was sheriff and county superintendent of schools.  She left two sons, Harry Baggott, of Anna, and Clem Baggott, of Dongola; two daughters, Mrs. Wade Medlin, of Chicago, and Mrs. J. L. McFadden, of Anna; 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Robert L. Clutts died last Thursday (9 Aug 1934) at his home in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Christian Church in Anna.  He worked at the state hospital.  He left his widow and several children.

Dan Myers, of Missouri, died.

 
24 Aug 1934:

Henry T. Rainey died Sunday (19 Aug 1934) in a hospital in St. Louis, of pneumonia and angina pectoris, aged 74 years.  He was a U.S. Congressman and succeeded Vice President Garner as Speaker of the House.  His funeral was at Carrollton, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, attending.  He left his widow, of Carrollton.

John Shaffer died 14 Aug 1934, at Bonnetts Mills, Mo., aged 69 years, and was buried at Bonnetts Mills.  He was born in Jonesboro.  Clara (Shaffer) Brown, of Jonesboro, was his sister. 

Allie Lemons died Thursday (16 Aug 1934) at the home of her mother, Mrs. Wilkinson, in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She lived in Mounds, Pulaski County, and her husband died about two years ago.   She left five children and several brothers and sisters. 

Sarah (Lindsey) Meisenheimer died 13 Aug 1934, aged 56 years, 4 months, 29 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Reynoldsville Baptist Church, which she joined in October 1915.  She was born 15 Mar 1878, near Jonesboro.  She married on 10 Sep 1899, Henry A. Meisenheimer.  They had 12 children, of whom six preceded her in death.  She left six children, Viola Reynolds, Blanch Mosby, Verda Meisenheimer, James Meisenheimer, Henry Meisenheimer, and Edward Meisenheimer, all of Reynoldsville; nine grandchildren, three brothers, Charles Lindsey, Arthur Lindsey, and Claude Lindsey; four sisters, Daisy Almarod, Eva Barker, Dollie Barker, and Ruth Watkins. 

Tom Henley died at McClure, Alexander County.  Louise Henley, of Balcom, was a granddaughter.

Lillie Maude (Montgomery) Patterson Norton died 7 Aug 1934, at home near Alto Pass, aged 57 years, 8 months, 28 days.  She was born 9 Nov 1876, in Crawford County, the daughter of Wilay and Margaret Montgomery.  She joined Liberty Baptist Church when a young girl and later moved her membership to the church in Alto Pass.  She married on 7 Nov 1895, Evan Patterson, who died 5 May 1907.  They had seven children, of whom one died in infancy.  She married on 8 Aug 1913, Hannibal Norton.  She left seven children, Edith Norton and Arthur Patterson, of Alto Pass, Glenn Patterson and Virgil Patterson, of Matcheson, Calif., and Ernest Patterson and Graydon Patterson, of Toledo, Ohio, and Ben Norton, at home; her husband, one sister, Mrs. Allen Smith, of Robison; seven brothers, Harmon Montgomery, Hershel Montgomery, Cleve Montgomery, and Chester Montgomery, all of Robinson, Ross Montgomery, of Monroe, Iowa, Clyde Montgomery, of Decker, Ind., and Millard Montgomery, of Noblesville, Ind.; nine grandchildren, two stepdaughters, and five stepsons.

Bill Crowder died last Friday (17 Aug 1934) of heart trouble, and was buried in Hall Cemetery.

7 Sep 1934:

William C. Morgan died 3 Sep 1934, aged 46 years, 16 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Methodist Church in Jonesboro.  He was born 18 Aug 1888, in Jonesboro, the son of W. W. and Hattie Morgan.  He grew up on his father's farm about four miles west of Jonesboro.  He began working for the Iron Mountain Railroad when 24 and after a few months transferred to Mobile & Ohio Railroad.  In a year or so he accepted a position as brakeman for the Illinois Central.  He entered the service during World War I and served a little over a year.  His ship docked in France the day after armistice was signed.  He returned to his position with the Illinois Central, which he held at his death.  He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Jonesboro.  He left two brothers, Harry Morgan, of Jonesboro, and Charles Morgan, of Wolf Lake; four nephews and five nieces.

Grandma Clendenen died, aged 94 years, and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery.

14 Sep 1934:

Rachel Arnold died 6 Sep 1934, at Anna City Hospital, of double pneumonia.  She lived in Jonesboro and was admitted to the hospital the day before.

Mrs. Mary Blyer died 10 Sep 1934, at Anna City Hospital.

Amanda Louvena (Lyerle) Plott died 9 Sep 1934, at the home of her son, Cyrus F. Plott, in Anna, aged 82 years, 8 months, 16 days, and was buried in Big Creek Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Big Creek Baptist Church, which she joined at the age of 26.  She was born 23 Dec 1851, four miles south of Anna, the daughter of Christopher and Mary Lyerle.  She married on 5 May 1870, Hiram M. Plott, who died 25 Nov 1912.  They had 12 children, of whom two daughters, Mary D. Graham and Nona E. Plott, preceded her in death.   She left 10 children, Harriet Ann Hinkle, of Mobile, Ala., Harvey A. Plott, of Anna, John F. Plott, of Herrin, Williamson County, Otis S. Plott, of Goodman, Mo., Cyrus F. Plott, of Anna, William A. Plott, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Curtis E. Plott, of Galesburg, Rufus E. Plott, of Anna, Ruth O. Davis, of Anna, and Agnes A. Craig, of Centralia; 25 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchildren.  (See also 21 Sep 1934, issue.)

Robert Morris Williford died 7 Sep 1934, at home in Mountain Glen, aged 84 years, 1 day, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.  His funeral was at home.  He was born 6 Sep 1850, near Marion, Williamson County.  He married about 50 years ago, Sarah Burton.  They had three children, two of whom preceded him in death.  He left his widow, one daughter, Amanda Mathis, of Jackson, Tenn.; two sisters, Nannie Howerton, of Oklahoma, and Betty Knight of Quincy, Adams County.

Brother of Millard Lingle died.

 
21 Sep 1934:

Ernest Edward "Ernie" Banjay died 16 Sep 1934, in Hale-Willard Memorial Hospital in Anna of knife wounds inflicted by his father-in-law, Pleasant Housman, on Friday (14 Sep 1934), at Housman's home on East Broad Street in Jonesboro, aged 20 years, 5 months, 12 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Methodist church in Jonesboro.  They were fighting over possession of an umbrella.  There was a coroner's inquest.  Housman, aged 55 years, the father of seven children from ages 4 to 23, was arrested and charged with murder.  He posted $5,000 bond was released from jail.  He was tried and found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to one to 14 years in the penitentiary (14 Dec 1934, issue).  Banjay was born 4 Apr 1914, in New Boston, Ill., the son of Ernest B. and Flora Belle Banjay.  At the age of 4 he moved with his parents to Fairfield, Iowa.  At the age of 16 he went to New Boston to live with his uncle and aunt.  He lived in Jonesboro many years and worked at the CCC camp No. 1621 near Jonesboro.  He married on 12 May 1934, Marguerite Housman, of Jonesboro.  The Rev. O. C. Smith of the Methodist church baptized him.  He left his widow, his father, stepmother, one brother, two sisters, three stepsisters, and one stepbrother. (See also 5 Oct 1934, issue.)

Charles H. McCarty died.  His funeral was Friday (14 Sep 1934) in Chauncey.  H. R. McCarty of Anna was a son and Hal McCarty and Mrs. Margaret Lutz were grandchildren.

28 Sep 1934:

Sarah Morgan died 19 Sep 1923 at the home of her nephew, Andrew Manus, on Court Street in Anna, of infirmities of old age, aged 95 years, and was buried in McGinnis Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Trinity Church.  She left one brother, Tilman Manus, aged 99 years.

Infant daughter of Dennis Helton died.

5 Oct 1934:

Emily (Meisenheimer) Hileman Cava ness died Saturday (29 Sep 1934), aged 60 years, 5 months, 14 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.  She was born 15 Apr 1874, on a farm five miles south of Jonesboro, the daughter of Giles and Matilda (Dougherty) Meisenheimer.  She married on 19 Feb 1894, Henry W. Hileman, who died 14 years ago.  She joined the church on 9 Mar 1919.  She married on 2 May 1925, John Cavaness, of Jonesboro.  She left one brother, Martin Meisenheimer, of Indio, Calif.; and two sisters, Edna Bankston, of New Market, Iowa, and Birdie  wife of George Angelly of American Falls, Idaho.  

S. B. Page died last Sunday (30 Sep 1934) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Wathen, in Anna, aged 72 years, and was buried at Ina.  He was the father of M. C. Page, editor of the Benton Standard.

Sadie (Sanford) Watkins Toler died last Monday (1 Oct 1934) at San Francisco, Calif.  Her girlhood was spent in Anna.  She married George T. Watkins, of Jonesboro, the son of Thomas J. Watkins, deceased.  They moved to western Kansas, where he died, but was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was an accomplished musician.  Mrs. Emma Townsend and Amos Sanford, of Anna, were her sister and brother.

Lorena Catherine Morgan died 30 Sep 1934, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. W. Corzine, in Balcom, aged 81 years, 5 months, 15 days, and was buried in Rowan Cemetery, near Makanda, Jackson County.  Her funeral was at Ford Funeral Home in Dongola.  She was born 15 Apr 1853, near Makanda, the daughter of Samuel and Zerilda Morgan.  She married in 1874 Samuel Voorhees, of Makanda, who died 20 Nov 1928.  She had three children, of whom one preceded her in death.  She was a member of the Baptist Church in Murphysboro, Jackson County for many years.  She left one daughter, Mamie Corzine and one son, Clyde Voorhees, of St. Louis.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one foster daughter, Mrs. Agnes Young, of Kankakee.

12 Oct 1934:

Allie Lawrence died 7 Oct 1934, in a St. Louis hospital, after an operation for gallstones, aged 62 years, 1 month, 16 days, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church in Mill Creek.  She was a member of Rebekah Lodge in Jonesboro.  A sister, Mrs. E. A. Keller, of Jonesboro, preceded her in death.  She left her husband, Arthur Lawrence, of Mill Creek; three sisters, Carrie Woltman, of Bloomington, Josie Jenkins, of Jonesboro, and May Dillow, of St. Louis; two brothers, Dr. W. E. Poole, of Kirkwood, Mo., and Ernest Poole, of San Francisco, Calif.

Elsie Jenkins died 9 Oct 1934, in New Orleans and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was the third daughter of L. A. Jenkins, deceased.  She left three sisters.

19 Oct 1934:

Peter Bernhard died 16 Oct 1934, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He had a stroke of paralysis two or three years ago and had another before his death.  His funeral was at Kornthal Lutheran Church.  He was born 5 Apr 1851, in Bavaria.  He came as a child to Union County with his parents.  He was a farmer south of Jonesboro.  A daughter, who died three years ago, preceded him in death.  He left a widow, six sons, Albert M. Bernhard, of Coal City, August Bernhard and Peter J. Bernhard, of Jonesboro, Stephen Bernhard, of West Frankfort, Franklin County, Paul W. Bernhard and Davis Bernhard, of Jonesboro; two daughters, Bertha Adams, of Anna, and Mrs. Elmer Weaver, of Jonesboro;  one aged brother, Adam Bernhard, of Jonesboro.

Dr. W. M. Eddleman died Wednesday (17 Oct 1934) in Anna.

Leander Doyle Keith died 17 Oct 1934, in Missouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Baptist Church.  He was born 16 Sep 1865, near Balcom, the son of Benjamin and Sarah (Corzine) Keith.  He attended Union Academy and National Business College in Delaware, Ohio, graduating in 1892.  He entered Hospital College of Medicine of Central Kentucky at Louisville, graduating with honors in June 1896.  He also took post-graduate courses in Chicago.  He set up a medical practice in Anna in July 1896.  He married on 12 Mar 1891, Ara Parker.  He was a member of the Masonic, Odd Fellows and Modern Woodmen fraternities and was a member of the school board.  He helped organize and was first president of Anna State and Trust Bank.  He was coroner for two years and a member of the Volunteer Service Corps during World War I.  He was an active member of the county and state medical societies.  He left his widow, three children, Dr. Roy Keith, of Anna, Mae Owens, of St. Louis, and Dr. John Keith, of Anna; one grandchild, Helen Keith, and one brother, Charles Keith, of near Anna..  (See also 26 Oct 1934, issue.)

26 Oct 1934:

Sherman S. Smith died 20 Oct 1934, at Manchester Nursing Home in St. Louis, aged 69 years, 9 months, 7 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church in Jonesboro.  He was born 30 Jan 1865, near Astoria, Fulton County.  He married on 27 Dec 1888, in Jonesboro, Olive D. Casper, of Jonesboro. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church of Platt Center, Neb., and transferred to Jonesboro in 1890, and to Anna church about 1907.  He later transferred to Union Methodist Church in St. Louis.   He had three children, Ira M. Smith, of St. Louis, Mrs. H. R. Blick, of Anna, and Edward L. Smith, of Overland, Mo.; a brother, Sydney Smith, of Elm Creek, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren.

2 Nov 1934:

William A. Lingle committed suicide last Saturday (27 Oct 1934) by swallowing poison at the home of his sister, Lenora Davis, near Dongola, aged 47 years.  He also left two other sisters, Izora Corzine, of Dongola, and Mrs. Ralph Ledgerwood, of Anna; and one brother, Roy Lingle, of St. Louis.

Clyde Lovell and L. C. Ferguson were killed Tuesday (30 Oct 1934) in an auto collision one mile south of McClure, Alexander County.  Lovell was a farmer at McClure and Allen Edmundsen, principal of McClure High School, was in the car with him.  Ferguson was a state highway engineer out of Carbondale, Jackson County.

Nellie (Kroh) Spire died Monday (29 Oct 1934) at her home on Spring Street in Anna, after a stroke of paralysis, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at McCarty Funeral Home.  She was born 30 Aug 1857, in Stockton, Calif., one of six children of the Rev. Philip H. and Diana (Perry) Kroh.  She married on 16 Aug 1885, George L. Spire.  She was an accomplished musician and soprano.  She was a member of the Presbyterian church in Anna, Eastern Star, and Past Worthy Matron of that order.  She was organizer and first president of the Fortnightly Club, a member of the Woman's Club and president from 1926-1927, and president of the City Hospital Auxiliary.  She left her husband, one daughter, Gladys Lentz; one granddaughter, Emily Diana Lentz; one brother, Frank H. Kroh, of Anna; and two sisters, Mrs. Ernest S. Alden and Mrs. Edward B. Walton, of Anna.

Thomas Pendergrass died last Friday (26 Oct 1934) at Anna, aged 72 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  His funeral was at the home of Pleasant Housman, in Jonesboro.  He was a blind pensioner.

Walter H. Wood died.  His funeral was last Saturday (27 Oct 1934) in Cairo, Alexander County.  He was the former mayor of Cairo.

9 Nov 1934:

Emma Maxine Hoyle died 1 Nov 1934.  Her funeral was at the home of Samuel  Hoyle, her grandfather.  She was born 16 Apr 1934, the daughter of Ford and Juanita Hoyle.  She left her parents, four grandparents, and a great-grandfather.

Cornelia Belle (Freeman) Lindsey died 4 Nov 1934, at home three and one half miles north of Wolf Lake, aged 73 years, 2 months, 4 days, and was buried at Grand Tower, Jackson County.  Her funeral was at the Methodist church in Grand Tower.  She was born 1 Sep 1861, the daughter of Cyrus Freeman.  She married on 11 Nov 1880, William Lindsey, in Jonesboro.  She left her husband, three daughters, Mrs. George Trainer, Mrs. Clarence Kimmel, and Mrs. Manual Kimmel, all of Wolf Lake; and two sons, Albert Lindsey, of Wolf Lake, Cyrus Lindsey, of Carbondale, Jackson County; eight brothers and sisters, James Freeman, of Wolf Lake, Adolphus Freeman, of Hurst-Bush, Cyrus Freeman, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Fulvas Rumfelt, of Wolf Lake, Nora Unger, of Gillian, Mo., Lula Harper, of Wolf Lake, Bryan Freeman, of Alto Pass, Dewey Freeman, of Driggs, Idaho; 32 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  (See also 30 Nov 1934, issue.)

Frank Laitas, aged 19 years,  was injured in a dynamite explosion Wednesday (7 Nov 1934) and was rushed to a Cape Girardeau, Mo., hospital.  He was not expected to live.  He was from Wakefield, Ill., and worked at a CCC camp at Delta, Alexander County.  He was helping to build a road.

Robert Maag died after being struck by a car on Route 146 between McClure and East Cape Girardeau, in Alexander County.  Garwood Sharp, of Sikeston, Mo, drove the car.  Roy Maag, of Cape Girardeau, was his son.  He left a widow, two sons, and two daughters.

Grace (Parsons) Powell died Monday (5 Nov 1934) on her back porch at home near Balcom, of a heart attack brought on by indigestion.  There was a coroner's inquest.  Her funeral was at Big Creek Church.  She was born 22 May 1886, at McCormick, Pope County.  She married on 26 Mar 1913, Jack Powell.  One son preceded her in death in infancy.  She moved from near Balcom to Ledford about 10 years ago.  She left her husband, five sons, Walter Powell, Arthur Powell, Clifford Powell, Leo Powell, and Roy Powell; and one daughter, Lucille Powell, age 9 years.

Joseph "Joe" Williams died at home last Friday (2 Nov 1934) during the noon meal, of heart trouble, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

16 Nov 1934:

William Bartruff died 14 Nov 1934, in the yard of Judge Hal A Spann's home in Anna, where he was working, aged 63 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  There was a coroner's inquest.  He probably had a stroke.  His funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro.  He left his widow, three sons, Samuel Bartruff, Glen Bartruff, and Arthur Bartruff; three daughters, Mrs. Earl Fowler, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Doyle A. Lipe, of Chicago, and Mrs. Herman Stilley, of Litchfield, Ky.; two sisters, Mrs. Charlie Bauer, and Kate Scharf, of Salem, Ore.; two brothers, Jacob Bartruff, of Jonesboro and Charlie Bartruff, of Salem, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.  (See also 23 Nov 1934, issue.)

Harris W. Brown died Sunday (11 Nov 1934) while pitching horseshoes with his son, aged 65 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Mill Creek.  He lived one and a half miles northwest of Mill Creek and was a farmer.  He left his widow, two daughters, Mary Miller, of Anna, and Mrs. Ward Eddleman, of Cairo; and two sons, George Brown, of Mounds, Pulaski County, and Lowell Brown, of Jonesboro.

Jewell Kathleen Williams died 10 Nov 1934, aged 11 years, 1 month, 14 days, and was buried in Morgan Cemetery.  Her funeral was at McGuire School.  She was born 27 Sep 1923, near Wolf Lake, the daughter of Frank Williams.  She left her parents, four sisters, and three brothers.

Thomas F. Bouton died Tuesday (13 Nov 1934) at a hospital in Billings, Mont., of blood poisoning after an automobile accident on 3 Nov 1934, aged 43 years, and was buried in Mountview Cemetery.  His funeral was at Smith's Chapel.  He was born 26 Aug 1891, in Buffalo, Wyo., the son of T. J. Bouton, who died 2 Nov 1926, in Billings, Mont.  He was a grandson of Thomas F. Bouton, who died in 1897 and was publisher of the Jonesboro Gazette for more than 25 year before retiring in 1893.  He moved with his parents to Billings in 1901.  He worked one year in Minneapolis for Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company.  He married in 1915, at Billings, Isabel Mitchell.  He was a member of the Episcopal Church.  His mother recently returned to Billings, from Baltimore, Md.  He was manager of Independent Refining Company of Laurel.  He had previously been sales manager for the tire department of Standard Oil Company and Goodrich Tire & Rubber Company.  He was the nephew of Mrs. Alice Moss, of Anna.  He left a widow, of 38 Avenue C., Billings; two daughters, Barbara Bouton, age 18 years, and Mary Jane Bouton, age 14 years, a mother, Mrs. T. J. Bouton, of 1019 Division Street, Billings, Mont.; and a sister, Mrs. Harry Heller, of Baltimore, Md. (See also 14 Dec 1934, issue.)

Arnie O. Keller died Friday (9 Nov 1934) at his farm home near Dongola, aged 57 years, and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery near Cypress, Johnson County.  His funeral was at Friendship Baptist Church.  He spent his entire life in the Dongola area.

23 Nov 1934:

John Cantrell Crawford died 17 Nov 1934, following two heart attacks, aged 65 years.  His funeral was at home.  He was born in Jonesboro, the third of five sons of Judge Monroe C. Crawford.  He attended University of Illinois three years, studying mechanical engineering.  He was employed by the city of Chicago and worked on the grounds and buildings of the 1893 World's Fair.   He then worked for a government pension department in Chicago.  He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert Crawford, Stanley Crawford, Charles Crawford, and George Crawford.  He joined Lincoln Park Masonic Lodge and was installed as worshipful master of the lodge by his father, who was past grand master of the state.  He returned to Jonesboro in 1906 and served nine years as postmaster during the Wilson Administration.  He then conducted an insurance business.  Five relatives served as pallbearers, James Stotlar, of Benton, Raymond Stotlar, of Carbondale, Nelson Layman, of DuQuoin, Crawford Wilbanks, of East St. Louis, and Samuel Johnson, of Springfield.  Everett Williford, of San Antonio, Texas, a friend since infancy was the other pallbearer.  Harry Hacker and Miss Laws were his nurses.  He left three nieces, Mrs. Samuel Johnson and Mary Crawford, of Springfield, daughters of Charley Crawford, of Springfield; and Margaret Louise Rickman, of Chicago, daughter of George Crawford.  He also left one sister, Mary Crawford.

Michael J. Howley died Tuesday (20 Nov 1934) in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 85 years.  He had lived in Cairo since boyhood.

Ella (Crabtree) Verble died 15 Oct 1870, six miles east of Anna, aged 64 years, 1 month, and was buried in Camp Ground Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Camp Ground Church.  She was born 15 Oct 1870, six miles east of Anna, the daughter of H. S. Crabtree.  She married on 20 Aug 1890, D. A. "Alonzo" Verble.  She left her husband, and two children, Mrs. Casper, of Carbondale, Jackson County, and Gretna Howerton, of Wilmington, Ill.

Daughter of Arthur Dale, of Jonesboro, died 21 Nov 1934, at Hale-Willard Memorial Hospital in Anna.  She was born 20 Nov 1934.

Dr. Harmon McFarland died 15 Nov 1934, at Anna City Hospital of heart trouble, aged 62 ears, and was buried in Oklahoma.  He lived in Cleveland, Okla., and was visiting relatives at Galatia.  He came to Anna to visit a relative, Mrs. Sallie Waller and became ill at Cobden.  His wife died four years ago.  He left two grown daughters.

Mrs. Calvin "Cal" Pender died Friday (16 Nov 1934) at home near Jonesboro, and was buried in Fairmont Cemetery at Cape Girardeau, Mo.  She was a niece by marriage to Richard Pender.

30 Nov 1934:

Mrs. J. D. R. (Cruse) Brown died 26 Nov 1934,  at home in Jonesboro, of pernicious anemia, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church, of which she was a member.  She was born 19 Jul 1863, the daughter of Jacob W. and Sarah (Hartman) Cruse.  She married on 1 Mar 1883, James D. R. Brown.  They bought a farm a few miles west of Jonesboro.  She bought the old Dougherty brick mansion on West Broad Street in Jonesboro 22 years ago.  She left her mother, aged 97 years; her husband, four sons, James R. Brown, of Jonesboro, Grover C. Brown, of Shreveport, La., Cruse Brown, of Houston, Texas, and August Dewey Brown, of Atlanta, La.; and two daughters, Jeanette Douglas, of Dongola, and Helen Norris, of Marion, Williamson County; 10 grandchildren, Carroll Douglas, Ruth Douglas, Annette Douglas, Jeannette Norris, Charles Norris, Earlene Brown, Leon Brown, Louise Brown, Donald Brown, and Vernon Brown; two brothers, Charles Cruse and Thomas J. Cruse; three sisters, Josephine Dillow, Jeanette Cruse, and Helen Misenhimer, all of Jonesboro.   (See also 7 Dec 1934, issue.)

Dr. O. M. Heilig died last Friday (23 Nov 1934) at home of cancer, aged 65 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Lutheran church in Mill Creek.  He had practiced medicine at Mill Creek for more than 39 years.  He left two brothers, Dr. George Heilig, of McClure, Alexander County, and Ben Heilig, of Tamms, Alexander County; two sisters, Mary Van Amburg, of Jonesboro, and Mrs. Ellis, of Ullin, Pulaski County.

Mrs. Orvialle Himmel died 20 Nov 1934, and was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana, Ill.  She was a member of Bishop church.

Elza Cummins died and her funeral was last Sunday (25 Nov 1934) in Anna.  Mrs. Charles Kelly, of Anna, was a daughter. 

7 Dec 1934:

Martha A. Lence died 3 Dec 1934, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Crawford, of infirmities of old age, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at her daughter's home.  She was born 30 Jan 1848, in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth A. Hardin.  Her family lived in the bottoms in Union County for a few years after the Civil War.  She married on 9 Oct 1864, Alfred Lence, who died 5 Mar 1910.  She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Jonesboro and past worthy matron of Jonesboro Chapter Order Eastern Star.  She left three daughters, Anna wife of W L. Howard, of Minneapolis, Minn., Emma widow of Charles C. Crawford, and Effie widow of Dr. W. C. Hovey, of Nokomis; four grandchildren, Alfred D. Hovey, of Chicago, Geraldine E. Hovey, of Nokomis, Mrs. Samuel R. Johnson and Mary Crawford II of Springfield; one great-grandchild, Carole Jean Johnson, of Springfield; and one sister, Nora Belle Wright, of Murphysboro, Jackson County.

Laura Alice Mitchell died 28 Nov 1934, at home at 1831 G. Street in Sacramento, Calif., of heart affection, aged 63 years, and her ashes were buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at James R. Garlick Palm Chapel.  After the funeral she was cremated in East Lawn Crematorium.  She was the widow of Walter Mitchell.  She left a daughter, Mrs. Laura M. Dawson, of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Helen Hinkel, of Los Angeles, Calif., and Lulu wife of Charles A. Jean, of Anna; three brothers, Ed R. Owen, of Lincoln, Calif., Arthur E. Owen, of Anna, and George Owen, of Minneapolis, Minn.—Sacramento Bee, Nov. 29.  (See also 14 Dec 1934, issue.)

Ernest A. Meyer died 24 Nov 1934, at the soldiers' home in Danville, aged 71 years, and was buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery.  He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War.  He was a retired barber and member of Golden Rule Lodge 374 and Harmony Encampment of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Nelson A. Miles Post of Spanish War Veterans and Woodmen of the World.  He left a widow, Ida M. Meyer, of 1225 North 48th Street in East St. Louis, St. Clair County; one daughter, Dorothy Meyer; three brothers, Henry Meyer, William Meyer, and Fred Meyer; five sisters, Mrs. W. M. Tramp, Mrs. J. Simpson, Mrs. L. Morris, Mrs. Lena Wisely, and Lydia Wilkinson. 

14 Dec 1934:

Ed M. Spiller died Tuesday (11 Dec 1934) in Marion, Williamson County, aged 69 years.  He was a law partner with Congressman E. E. Dennison for 30 years. and served as state's attorney and county judge in Williamson County.  He left a widow.

Charles Davidson died 8 Dec 1934, of injuries received in an automobile accident a few weeks previously, aged 64 years, and was buried in Lindsey Cemetery near McClure, Alexander County.
His funeral was at Norris & Son Funeral Home.  He left a son, Leonard Davidson, of Jonesboro, and one daughter, Hattie Cerney, of Anna. 

Homer Goodman, engineer, Calvin Lewis, fireman, and E. F. Eliston, brakeman, all of Centralia, were killed last Saturday (8 Dec 1934) at Freeman, near Centralia, when their Burlington freight train crashed into a string of loaded coal cars.  Howard F. (?) Goodman was the son of D. W. and Addie (Finch) Goodman.  He was born 27 Aug 1889, at Anna.  He left a mother, Mrs. Harry Kratzinger, of St. Joseph, Mo.

Albert E. Goodman was instantly killed Friday (7 Dec 1934) when his car was struck by a Mobile & Ohio freight train on the south crossing at Mill Creek, aged 45 years, and was buried in St. John's Cemetery.  There was a coroner's inquest.  He was a member of Dongola Masonic Lodge No. 581, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge at Elco, Alexander County, and Modern Woodman of America at Mill Creek.  He used to operate a mill at Mill Creek.  He served on the school board for years and was village clerk.  He was a member of the Congregational church at Mill Creek.  He left a widow, Blanche Goodman; three children, Mildred Frink, Lucille Goodman, and Ralph Eugene Goodman, all of Mill Creek; four brothers, E. L. Goodman, of Dongola, J. F. Goodman, of Tamms, Alexander County, H. C. Goodman, of Cypress, Johnson County, and L. E. Goodman, of Genesco.

Allen Turner was killed Wednesday (12 Dec 1934) after being struck by an automobile, aged 13 years, 12 days, and was buried in McClure Cemetery in McClure, Alexander County.  He was one his way home from school, riding in a wagon, and jumped out of the wagon and into the path of a car driven by Frank Thornber, of Chicago.  There was a coroner's inquest.  His funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Wolf Lake.  He was the son of Herbert Turner, of Wolf Lake.  (See also 21 Dec 1934, issue.)

Manda Jane Hartman died 6 Dec 1934, aged 63 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  She never recovered from surgery at Deaconess' Hospital in St. Louis in June 1934.   She was born 9 Dec 1874, near Anna.  She worked at Anna State Hospital as a cook for 19 years.  She left a daughter, Margaret Yohnka, of Kankakee; one granddaughter, and two sisters, Nellie Hartman and Millie Caraker, of Lick Creek. 

Mrs. Amelia Boyd died and her funeral was Friday last week (7 Dec 1934) at Dongola.

 
21 Dec 1934:

Emma DeWitt (Morgan) Rinehart died 19 Dec 1934, at home south of Jonesboro, of pneumonia, aged 73 years, 3 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She had used crutches for the past five years.  Her funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church in Jonesboro.  She was born 10 Apr 1861, on the present Thomas Nimmo farm west of Jonesboro, one of 11 children of James and Mary Elizabeth Morgan.  She also had 11 half brothers and half sisters.  She married on 16 Dec 1883, Marshall Rinehart, who died 1 Dec 1932.  They purchased a farm two miles north of Jonesboro.  She was baptized on 14 Oct 1934.  A daughter, Louise Rinehart, who died in infancy, preceded her in death.  She left four daughters, Mrs. Allan Brummitt, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Luther O. Norris, of Anna, Mrs. Claude N. Ellis, of McClure, Anna Rinehart, of Jonesboro; one son, John Rinehart, of Anna; two brothers, George Morgan, of Jonesboro, and Samuel Morgan, of Ware; two sisters, Allie Gray, of DuQuoin, and Fannie Wiggins, of Jonesboro; and 13 grandchildren.   (See also 28 Dec 1934, issue.)

Everett McDowell died Monday (17 Dec 1934) of pneumonia, aged 15 years, and was buried at Noble, Ill.  He was the son of Charles McDowell, employee at Anna State Hospital.  He came with his parents from Noble, about a year ago.

Mary Lierd died Tuesday (18 Dec 1934) at the home of her son, Duffy Lierd, in Anna, of infirmities of old age, aged 85 years.  She was the widow of George Lierd, who died some 30 years ago.  The funeral was at the son's home.

Jane Butterfield died last Monday (17 Dec 1934).

28 Dec 1934:

Hope Rebecca (Norris) Hines was killed Wednesday (26 Dec 1934) when her automobile was struck by a passenger train on the Grand Trunk Railway at a crossing in Harvey, Ill., and was buried at Anna.  Three other women and three men, all employees of the Illinois Relief Corporation, were killed on their way to work at Chicago Heights.  Her funeral was at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Jonesboro, of which she was a member.  She was born 10 Jun 1903, in Jonesboro, the daughter of Thomas Norris.  She graduated from Anna-Jonesboro Community High School in 1921.  She entered Southern Illinois Normal University at Carbondale and graduated from the teacher's course.  She taught at a school in Paducah, Ky., for two and a half years and in Jonesboro for six years.  She had two years' credit towards her master's degree at the University of Chicago.  She married on 20 Jun 1923, Clifford Hines, of Carbondale, Jackson County.  She was a member of Jonesboro Chapter of Order of Eastern Star.  She left a small son, her mother, and one brother, Cecil Norris.  (See also 4 Jan 1935, issue.)

Mrs. John L. Barton died 16 Dec 1934, at the home of her son, Logan Barton, in Meridian, Miss., from injuries sustained in a fall three weeks earlier, aged 96 years.  She lived in Carbondale, Jackson County for many years.  Her husband established the New Era in 1866 and changed the name to Barton's Free Press.  He purchased the Carbondale Herald, founded by John Galbreath and W. S. Hill in 1892, and operated it until 1910.  She left two sons, Logan Barton, and Major Gene Barton, of Florida.

Frank Karraker died this morning (24 Dec 1934) at home in Dongola, aged 75 years.  He was born in Dongola.  He married on 16 Feb 1876, Anna Montgomery.  He left his widow and seven children, Viola Beggs, of Cypress, Earl Karraker, of Mound City, Pulaski County, Henry Karraker, of Mounds, Pulaski County, Ray Keller, of Dongola, Roy Karraker, of Flora, Wiley Sullards, of Mt. Carmel, and Clara Ford, of Evansville, Ind.; four brothers, Marion Karraker, Albert Karraker, and John Karraker, of Dongola, and Thomas Karraker, of St. Louis; two sisters, Mrs. Elmer Cope and Mrs. Alonzo Keller, of Dongola; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.—Cairo Citizen, Dec. 24.

John "Jack" Fekowosky died at St. Louis city hospital from injuries suffered last Wednesday (19 Dec 1934?) when he was struck by an automobile at Kingshighway and Farlin Avenue, and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery.  His funeral was at William Schumaker Chapel, at 4838 Natural Bridge.  He left a widow, Lula (Dilday) Fekowosky, daughter of the late Willis Dilday, of Alto Pass; and seven children, Hazel Smith, Pearl Hackman, Beulah Spencer, May Randolph, John Fekowosky, Irvin Fekowosky, and Gertrude Fekowosky.  Mr. and Mrs. Harry Norton and son Bobby Norton were cousins. 

Nancy Caroline McIntire died Friday (21 Dec 1934) at St. Andrew's Hospital in Murphysboro, of stomach complications, aged 67 years, 29 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of her daughter, Bessie Wilson, at 206 N. Sixth Street in Murphysboro.  She was born 26 Nov 1868, in Williamson County.  She married Newton Dehart, who died 5 May 1918, at Alto Pass.  Three children preceded her in death.  She lived at Pomona, Jackson County.  She was a member of the Baptist church in Alto Pass.  She left her husband, five children, Bessie Wilson, of Murphysboro, Ada Yates, of Cobden, Maggie Stearns, of Alton, Bertie Lindsey, of Pomona, and Fred Dehart, of Hughes, Ark.; 26 grandchildren, four brothers, C. C. Tippey, of Marion, Williamson County, James Tippey, of Herrin, Williamson County, Hosea Tippey, of Murphysboro, and Dallas Tippey, of Stonefort. 

Sarah Hartline died 16 Dec 1934, at the home of her sister-in-law, Ruth Hartline, in Anna, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Walnut Grove Methodist Episcopal Church.  A few months ago she moved from Mountain Glen to Anna.  She left two brothers, Silas Hartline and Jeff Hartline, of Mountain Glenn; one sister, Mrs. Clem _____ of Terre Haute, Ind.
