Jan 1912:

Mollie Goodall Spann died 27 Dec 1911, at Marion, Williamson County.  She married Judge W.A.

Spann, of Vienna, Johnson County, last October.

Miss Kate Nimmo died in South Bend, Ind., aged about 75 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She

was a sister of A.J. Nimmo, of Jonesboro.  Elmer Mangold accompanied the body.

Infant daughter of Gus Thomas died Sunday (31 Dec 1911), and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was

born on Friday (29 Dec 1911).

Jacob Rendleman died Saturday (30 Dec 1911) at home in Mountain Glen, aged 80 years.  He was

confined to a chair with palsy or paralysis for the last 16 years.  He was the second son of Henry and Mary Rendleman.  He left six brothers, Harris Rendleman, Henry Rendleman, Joseph Rendleman, John Rendleman, Fay Rendleman, and Frank Rendleman; one sister, Harriet Spann; a widow; two sons, Albert Rendleman and Crit Rendleman; six daughters, Mrs. D.W. Underwood, Mrs. Allen Penrod, Mrs. W. Mullinaux, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Mrs. Jack Holliday, and Mrs. Ross Condon, of Cobden, and Miss Jessie Rendleman, at home; and a number of grandchildren.

12 Jan 1912:

Harry Walker died last Saturday (6 Jan 1912) at Henrietta Hospital at East St. Louis, St. Clair County, of

spinal meningitis, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He had an appendicitis operation Wednesday (3 Jan 1912).  He would have been 24 on 18 May 1912.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.  He was a brakeman for the Illinois Central from East St. Louis to Carbondale.  Five years ago he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was on the battleship Kansas. He was the son of William W. Walker, of Cape Girardeau, formerly of Jonesboro.  One brother preceded him in death.  He was the brother of Holly Walker, of Jonesboro, Dr. George W. Walker, of Cape Girardeau, Carroll Walker, of East St. Louis, a freight conductor on the Illinois Central.  He also left sisters.

James Chamberlain died Saturday (6 Jan 1912) at Lexington, where he was visiting relatives, and was

buried at Lexington.  He used to live in Anna.  He was employed by Fruit Growers Refrigerating & Power Company.

19 Jan 1912:

Robert Carlile died Wednesday last week (10 Jan 1912), aged 64 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Catholic Church where he was a member.  He recently went to Orlando, Fla., for his health.  He was born in Mississippi and moved to Illinois during the Civil War.  He left a widow, two sisters, Mrs. P.C. Willoughby and Mrs. Logan Boren; two brothers, B.C. Carlile and Thomas A. Carlile, of Anna.

Artie M. Boone died Monday (15 Jan 1912) at home on Chestnut Street in Anna, aged 56 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Methodist church.  She was born 14 Nov 1855, in Covington, Tenn., the daughter of the late J.L. Gardner.  She came to Illinois when she was 12.  In August 1875 she married W.T. Boone, who died June 1909.  She joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and transferred with her husband to the Methodist Episcopal Church.  She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.  She left a brother, Louis Gardner, of St. Louis; two daughters, Mrs. H.A. Bankes, of St. Louis, and Miss Minnie Boone, of Anna.

Robert Rendleman died 15 Jan 1912, at home five miles south of Anna.  His funeral was at Trinity

Church.  He was born 4 Oct 1848, in Salisbury, N.C., and came to Illinois with his parents when he was 19.  He was a member of the German Reformed Church.  He left a widow, two daughters, and two brothers.

Mrs. Louie Turner died Wednesday (17 Jan 1912) at home on North Main Street in Jonesboro, aged 21

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

26 Jan 1912:

George C. Schuchardt was killed Tuesday (23 Jan 1912) in an accident in the oil fields at Beaumont,

Texas, aged 38 years, and was buried in San Antonio, Texas.  He was the younger son of the late Dr. George W. Schuchardt, an old resident of Jonesboro.  She left a sister, Mrs. Everett Williford, of San Antonio, Texas, and another brother and sister in Texas.  Mrs. Charles H. Chase and Mrs. Douglas D. Hacker, of Jonesboro, were cousins.  The only surviving member of his mother’s family was George M. Dougherty, of Cairo, Alexander County.  (See also 2 Feb 1912, issue.)

Hiram H. Wise died recently in Artesia, Texas, of tuberculosis, and was buried in Artesia, Texas.  He

used to live in Anna and moved to Texas a year ago.

Henry Clinton George died 22 Jan 1912, in Anna, of paralysis of the heart, aged 63 years, and was buried

in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Manchester, N.H., and came to Anna in 1856.  He was a member of the Arcola Masonic Lodge and was a land agent for the Illinois Central Railroad.  He married Martha Harvey in 1876 at Arcola.  They had 10 children, of whom one was living, Mrs. J.T. Britan, of Columbus, Ohio.

2 Feb 1912:

Martin Spann died Thursday last week (25 Jan 1912) at Reynoldsville, aged 26 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was the son of Cab Spann.

Bernard Smith died in Cairo, Alexander County.  He was a relative of Mrs. Sam Stokes.

Russell Adam Cauble died of scarlet fever, aged 2 years, 10 months, 25 days, and was buried in Alto

Pass Cemetery.  He was the only surviving son of Adam and Lulu Cauble.  Five brothers died before him after living only a few days.  He left his parents and a sister.

9 Feb 1912:

Ellen (Provo) Davis Downing died yesterday (8 Feb 1912?) in St. Louis, aged 65 years, and was buried

in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.  She was the daughter of James J. Provo.  Mrs. Belle Hazlewood was her sister.

Stephen Bird died Wednesday (7 Feb 1912) in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 75 years.  His family were

the oldest settlers at Birds Point, Mo.

16 Feb 1912:

Leah Ann Ury died 13 Feb 1912, aged 76 years, 11 months, 9 days, and was buried in St. John’s

Cemetery.  Her funeral was at St. John’s Church.  She was born 4 Mar 1835, the daughter of Henry Cruse.  She was the last of a family of five brothers and two sisters.  She was a member of the Lutheran Church.  She married on 22 Sep 1854, Thomas Ury, who died 22 Jan 1878, at the age of 48 years, when their youngest child was 6 years old.  They had seven sons, one of whom died in infancy, Walter H. Ury, J. Webster Ury, Warren R. Ury, who died 24 Mar 1909, James H. Ury, Absalom W. Ury, and Sidney A. Ury.  She also left 24 grandchildren.

23 Feb 1912:

Elizabeth A. Corzine died last Monday (19 Feb 1912) at the home of her son, A.J. Corzine, in Cobden,

aged 72 years, 1 day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.

Guy Morgan Standard died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Laura Stout, in Creal Springs, Williamson

County, aged 21 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was a law student at Ann Arbor, Mich.  He left a mother, two brothers, Lester Standard and Warren J. Standard, both of Creal Springs.

 W. Scott Day died 16 Feb 1912, at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif., of acute indigestion, aged 64 years,

and was buried in Santa Barbara, Calif.  His funeral was at the Unitarian church.  He was a Mason.  He was born in Nashville, Tenn.  He taught school in Union County and then studied law.  He moved to Santa Barbara from Jonesboro 20 years ago.  He left a widow, who was the daughter of the late Paul Frick; a son, Clarence Day, a lawyer in California; a daughter, Alice wife of W.A. McLaren, of New York and Mexico; three brothers, George W. Day, of Jonesboro, John W. Day, of Grand Bay, Ala., and Henry Day, of Greenville, Miss.; a sister, Mrs. D.J. Hess, of Jonesboro.  (See also 1 Mar 1912, issue.)

Ella Elizabeth Williford died Sunday (18 Feb 1912) at home on Main Street in Anna, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Presbyterian church.  She had a paralytic stroke on 10 Jan 1912.  She was born 8 May 1845, at Elgin, the daughter of William C. and Caroline (Willard) Kimball.  She married on 17 Oct 1872, at Elgin, John F. Williford.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  She left three daughters, Carrie Williford, Emma Williford, and Mary Williford, a twin sister, Mrs. C.J. Hawkins; and one brother, Charles W. Kimball, of Elgin.

Anne Marie Beisswingert died Monday (19 Feb 1912) at home on Chestnut Street in Anna, of

tuberculosis, aged 41 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.  She was the daughter of John W. Schmitt and was born in Belleville.  She married V.C. Beisswingert.  She left a husband, a son, a daughter, a father, a brother, and a sister, Mrs. E.B. Terpinitz, of Carbondale, Jackson County.

1 Mar 1912:

Samuel Williford died 12 Feb 1912, at home in Lebanon, Okla., of heart failure, aged about 60 years.  He

was born in Jonesboro, the 2^nd son of C.H. Williford, deceased.  When 18, in 1870, he left for Texas, where he married.  He moved to Indian Territory 15 years ago.  He was over 6 feet tall.  His oldest brother, John F. Williford, died in March 1911.  He left a widow, several children, four brothers, Emmett Williford and Henry Williford, of Jonesboro, Will Williford, of Anna, and Everett Williford, of San Antonio, Texas; and a sister, Mrs. C.F. Willard, of Jonesboro.

Mrs. M.L. Sperry died Sunday (25 Feb 1912) at her home in Cobden, aged 72 years, and was buried in

Cobden Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Presbyterian church.  She used to live in Anna.

John Blackburn died recently at home in Los Angeles, Calif.  He left Anna for California 12 years ago. 

His wife was a sister of A.D. Bohannon and Mrs. A.W. Robinson, of Anna.  He was commander of the 60^th Illinois Infantry.

William C. Simpson died Saturday (24 Feb 1912) in Ashville, N.C., of pneumonia, and was buried in

Vienna Cemetery.  He was the former mayor of Vienna, Johnson County.  He was the brother-in-law of John B. Jackson, of Anna.  He left a wife and four children in Evanston.

8 Mar 1912:

J.T. Ford died Saturday (2 Mar 1912) on Miller’s farm.

Harriet Green died Tuesday (5 Mar 1912) at home on Asylum Avenue in Anna of membraneous croup

and pneumonia, aged 4 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Owen Green.

Ollie (Hill) Menees died 4 Mar 1912, at home in Morehouse, Mo., and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 

Her funeral was at the Baptist church in Anna.  She was the daughter of the Rev. J.A. Hill and the wife of James A. Menees.

15 Mar 1912:

Andrew J. Pipkin died recently in California of paralysis, aged about 72 years.  He was born in

Jonesboro.  He was a half brother of Mrs. Belle Hazlewood, who is the only living child of Mrs. Malinda Provo.

Bessie Mabel Treece died Tuesday (12 Mar 1912) at the home of her father, C.W. Treece, two miles

north of Anna, aged 19 years, 8 months, 9 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Casper Chapel.

Mary C. Toler died Wednesday (13 Mar 1912) at the home of her son, J.I. Toler, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  She was born 22 Jul 1825, in North Carolina.  She came to Union County when 14 with her uncle, Elos Anderson.  She married on 21 Jun 1845, John Toler.  They moved to Anna in 1865 and he died in 1866.  She was the oldest member of the Anna Methodist Episcopal Church.  She had five sons and five daughters; four children were living at her death.

22 Mar 1912:

Harriet Olive Morgan died yesterday (21 Mar 1912?) at home west of Jonesboro of rheumatism of the

heart, aged 49 years, 11 months, 29 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.  She left a husband, Walter Morgan, and several children.

Ben M. Hunsaker died 17  Mar 1912, at the Odd Fellows Home in Mattoon, aged 76 years, 2 months, 12

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church.  He was born a few miles south of Jonesboro, the son of Samuel Hunsaker, and was the last of his family.  He spent 15 years on the Pacific Coast, but returned to Jonesboro in 1873.  He married on 30 Apr 1876, Margaret Goyer.  He was assistant postmaster under D.W. Miller, but later became a carpenter.  In the 1890s he moved to Murphysboro, Jackson County and moved to the Odd Fellows Home two years ago.  He left a widow, two sons, Wilbur Hunsaker, of Murphysboro, and Harry Hunsaker, of St. Louis.

Mrs. Joseph Lloyd died Thursday last week (14 Mar 1912) at home on Main Street in Anna, aged 63

years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was married in 1885.  She left a husband, who is totally blind, a brother, T.C. Lippard, of Anna, and a sister at Carbondale.

Capt. James F. Murray, the father of Mrs. R. Guy Pickrell, was probably fatally injured in St. Louis by a

street car.

29 Mar 1912:

Raymond Robert Cruse died 25 Mar 1912, at McClure, Alexander County, aged 23 years, 5 months, 21

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His body was taken to the old Cruse home in the northern part of Jonesboro and his funeral was at Jonesboro Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was the oldest child of George G. Cruse.  He was educated in Jonesboro and graduated from Northwestern Academy in Evanston.  A year ago he went to Dallas, Texas, because he had tuberculosis.  He joined his parents at their new home in McClure.  He was the nephew of Dr. and Mrs. Theodore Culp, of Ava.  He left his parents and two sisters, Helen Cruse and Alma Cruse.

Matilda Rinehart died 27 Mar 1912, at home in Jonesboro, aged 87 years, 15 days, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.  She was born 8 Mar 1825, three miles south of Jonesboro, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Sams.  She was the last member of her family to die.  She married on 11 May 1848, John Rinehart, who died in 1874.  She left five children, Henry Rinehart, Marshall Rinehart, Mrs. D.F. Mackey, Mrs. Sam V. Morgan, Miss Sarah Rinehart, 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  Her administrator found among her belongings a record of the colonial Congress of 1767.  (See also 5 Apr 1912, and 26 Apr 1912, issues.)

Anna (Craver) Hileman died at home in Jonesboro known as the old James Craver place and was buried

in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.

Joseph L. Rendleman died Monday at home at Mountain Glen, aged 61 years, and was buried in Cobden

Cemetery.  He had a stroke while working as a section foreman for the M & O Railroad.  He was born on 25 Dec, the oldest son of Martin and Clara (Lamer) Rendleman.  He married Ella Uffendill, of Cobden.  They had four children, Ora Rendleman, a train dispatcher at Ava, Cora McDonald, of East St. Louis, Myrtle McKinney, of Little Rock, Ark., and Maude Newberry, of Alto Pass; one brother, Thomas Rendleman, of Alto Pass; and four sisters, Mrs. E.C. Aber, of Murphysboro, Mrs. James Venerable, Mrs. George D. Rich, and Mrs. Charles Norris, all of Cobden.

Abbie Rendleman was fatally burned and died Saturday (23 Mar 1912) at Carbondale, Jackson County,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church.  She graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1909 and went Wednesday last (20 Mar 1912) to Normal School in Carbondale.  She was accidentally put gasoline on a fire in a cook stove, thinking it was coal oil.  She was the daughter of George H. Rendleman, of the eastern part of the county.

5 Apr 1912:

Mrs. Henry Williams died Saturday (29 Mar 1912) while preparing breakfast at the home of A.J.

McCormick on South West Street in Carbondale, Jackson County.  She poured oil on the fire in the cook stove and was engulfed in flames.

Lee Ferguson died last Saturday (29 Mar 1912) of tuberculosis in Jonesboro, aged about 40 years, and

was buried in Union Cemetery east of Dongola.  He previously lived in Ullin, Pulaski County.  He left a widow and five small children. 

Billy Bryan died last Saturday (29 Mar 1912) at home in Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He retired as a

railroad conductor about two years ago.

Willard Holmes was killed last Saturday (29 Mar 1912) when he fell from the north bound train at Mill

Creek and was cut in two, aged 25 years.  He was said to have been intoxicated.  He lived in Mill Creek and his father and two sisters were on the platform waiting for him.

A.J. Bunch died last night (29 Mar 1912), aged 75 years.  He was born 31 Jan 1837, where Elco stands in

Alexander County.  His parents died in infancy and he was reared in Jonesboro.  He became a blacksmith and had a shop in Jonesboro and in Clear Creek.  He married on 12 Mar 1862, Minerva I. Sams, the daughter of Nathan Sams.  He lived in McClure, Alexander County.  He had six children, Joseph Bunch, Herman Bunch, Rodney Bunch, Minnie Bunch, Norma Bunch, and Eunice Bunch.—Cairo Citizen 30 Mar 1912.

12 Apr 1912:

Will Clelland was killed when he fell across a gasoline powered saw at the home of Jason Casey, four

miles east of Dongola, and was buried in Montreal, Canada.  He left a mother and sister in Montreal.

3 May 1912:

Mrs. Thomas Lemons died at St. Louis and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  Her funeral was 21 Apr

1912, at the Baptist church in Alto Pass, where she was a member.

Samuel McFarland died 21 Apr 1912, aged over 60 years, and was buried in Union Springs Cemetery. 

His funeral was at Union Springs Church.

10 May 1912:

Infant son of Ollie Daniels died at Ullin, Pulaski County, and was buried Tuesday (7 May 1912) in Anna

Cemetery.

17 May 1912:

Mary Brown, daughter of John W. Brown, of south of Jonesboro, died Monday (13 May 1912), aged 22

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.

24 May 1912:

Eliza J. Nimmo died 22 May 1912, at home in Jonesboro, of heart trouble, aged 84 years, 2 months, 19

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was the daughter of William and Frances Tripp.  She married on 9 Mar 1848, Col. Andrew J. Nimmo, who died 12 or 15 years ago.  She left two sons, Leander W. Nimmo, who has lived with his mother the last few years, Charles F. Nimmo, of Delhi, Ohio, (did not receive word of his mother’s death in time to attend her funeral), and Mrs. John S. Alexander, of Couer d’Alene, Idaho.  She also left a sister, Mrs. Sarah Alden, of Anna.  Mrs. L.W. Nimmo and daughter Addie Nimmo, of St. Louis, attended the funeral.  (See also 31 May 1912, issue.)

Ira Coats died last Sunday (19 May 1912) after taking carbolic acid at his home in Cape Girardeau, Mo.,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Will Wise, of Cairo, Alexander County, died at Ashville, N.C., of tuberculosis, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.

Eleanor Davis died 17 May 1912, aged 12 years, 4 months, 1 day.  Her funeral was at Trinity Church. 

She was the daughter of A.J. Davis. 

31 May 1912:

Margaret Alden died Thursday last week (23 May 1912) at home on Main Street in Anna, of tuberculosis,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Presbyterian church.  She was born 18 Dec 1893, the youngest daughter of J.B. Alden.  She was confined to her bed for the last five months.  She graduated from Union Academy in 1911.

G.W. Brown was killed Saturday (24 May 1912) at his office in Jacksonville by a temporarily insane

man.  He was the engineer who installed the Anna water works system.

H.F. Warren died 22 May 1912, at home in Calexico, La., and was buried in Calexico, La.  He was born

5 Jul 1851.  He left Anna in 1907.  He left a wife, son, brother, and two sisters in Ohio.

Mrs. Alice (Goddard) Brooks died Tuesday (28 May 1912) at home east of Anna of tuberculosis, aged

32 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.  She left a husband, Alva Brooks, and four children.

Margaret Vancil died at the home of her daughter in Springfield, aged 71 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  She was a member of the Christian Church and lived in Anna until a few years ago.  She left four children.

7 Jun 1912:

John Wesley Hileman died 30 May 1912, at his home one mile south of Mill Creek in Alexander County,

aged 65 years, 7 months, 5 days, and was buried in Vick Cemetery, Alexander County.  He married on 3 Nov 1867, Rachel S. Reed, who died 18 May 1887.  He married again on 9 Feb 1888, Martha E. Heater, who died 4 Aug ____. He joined the Baptist Church 35 years ago, was a justice of the peace for 25 years and a long-time school director.  He left six children, J.O. Hileman, at home, Robert L. Hileman, of Jonesboro, W.O. Hileman, of Jackson, Tenn., O.J. Hileman, of Mill Creek, Mrs. C.W. Hileman, of Jonesboro, and James W. Hileman, of Murphysboro, Jackson County; two brothers, C.N. Hileman, of Thebes, Alexander County and L.D. Hileman, of Mill Creek. 

Frank P. Martin died 31 May 1912, at home four miles east of Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 

He married Lydia Barnes, of Jonesboro.  He left a widow, seven children, and two brothers, Dr. S.C. Martin and Sam Martin, of Anna.

14 Jun 1912:

Sarah Klutts died 11 Jun 1912, at home in Jonesboro, aged 80 years, 9 months, 11 days, and was buried

in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.  She was born in Cabarrus Co., N.C., the daughter of Daniel and Rachel Dry.  She married on 31 Aug 1854, Charles Klutts.  She lived in Jonesboro 58 years. She joined the Southern Methodist Church early in her life.  She had no children.

Sister of Frank Walsh died at St. Louis.  Mrs. Frank Walsh was the daughter of Hiram Green.

Nancy Angeline Eddleman died of heart failure while serving dinner to her husband, aged 72 years, 3

months, 6 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was born 3 Mar 1840, in Union County, the daughter of William and Martha Eaves.  She married on 30 Mar 1856, William P. Stokes, who died 5 Jan 1889.  They had nine children, two of whom are living, Thomas Y. Stokes and Ford E. Stokes.  An 11-year-old granddaughter, the daughter of Thomas Stokes, lived with her.  She married 2^nd on 12 Apr 1897, Adam N. Eddleman.  He was critically ill with cancer.  She joined the Baptist Church in September 1861 and in 1902 transferred to the Lutheran Church.

21 Jun 1912:

Jim Hopkins was killed Sunday (16 Jun 1912) in a saloon in Tamms by City Marshal Thomas D. Wilson. 

He had been working in Reynoldsville.

Ada (Moore) Oliver died 16 Jun 1912, at home in Pulaski, Pulaski County, of cancer, aged 38 years, 5

months, 11 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside her husband, Charles C. Oliver, and child.  Her funeral was at the Methodist church in Pulaski.  Her husband was the time agent for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad and was killed in a train accident at Cairo, Alexander County, about 10 years ago.  She left one son. 

28 Jun 1912:

Taylor Dodd died Friday last week (20 Jun 1912) at home in Logansport, Ind., of diabetes, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in 1854 in Tennessee and came to Illinois in 1869 with his parents.  In 1882 he moved to Anna and remained five years.  He went to Waukegan to live with a son and then to Logansport.  He was a lawyer, a Republican, and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.  He served a term as mayor of Anna.  He left a widow and six children, Mrs. Coral Goddard, Roy Dodd, Townsend Dodd, Truman Dodd, Mary Dodd, and Homer Dodd.

John Parker was killed Thursday (27 Jun 1912) in a train wreck two and a half miles north of Jonesboro,

aged about 45 years.  He lived in Murphysboro, Jackson County, and was an engineer.  He left a widow and six children.

12 Jul 1912:

Miss Mary Harvey died Friday (5 Jul 1912) at Cairo, Alexander County, aged 69 years, and was buried

in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County.  She was the aunt of Mrs. Thomas Norris.

Frank Gray died Monday (8 May 1912) at home in Elkville, Jackson County, and was buried in

DuQuoin.  He was a groceryman in Jonesboro before he retired.  He left a widow, who is the daughter of Mrs. James Morgan, and one daughter, Gertrude Gray.

19 Jul 1912:

William S. Hanners died 10 Jul 1912, in St. Andrew’s Hospital in Murphysboro, Jackson County, of

Bright’s disease, aged about 75 years.  He had just returned from a two-month stay at Hot Springs, Ark.  He was born near Dongola.  He enlisted in the 109^th Regiment in 1862 and was mustered out in 1865.  He served as deputy sheriff of Union County and was twice elected county clerk.  In 1882 he moved to Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He was married twice.  He left one daughter by his first wife, Mrs. Lulu Morley, of Horse Creek, Wyo.  He married 2^nd Laura Frick, daughter of Paul Frick, and she lives with her children, Mrs. Helen Flockhart and Will Hanners, in Carbondale, Jackson County.

Adam N. Eddleman died 13 Jul 1912, at home in Anna of cancer, aged 77 years, 8 months, 29 days, and

was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Lutheran church in Anna.  He was born in Union County and was married three times.  His last wife died suddenly recently.  He lived in Anna 17 years and was a groceryman until about a year and a half ago.  He was a member of the Lutheran Church.  He left two daughters, Mrs. W.H. Crane, of Anna, and Mrs. D.H. Rendleman, of Jonesboro; four brothers, one sister, Mrs. M.N. Heilig, of Jonesboro; 13 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. 

26 Jul 1912:

Elizabeth Engelhart, infant daughter of E. Engelhart, died last Friday (19 Jul 1912), aged 11 months, 19

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Ernest S. Sauerbrunn died 21 Jul 1912, at home four miles south of Jonesboro, of tuberculosis, aged 24

years, 9 months, 9 days, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery.  His funeral was at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Kornthal.  He was the youngest son of Fred Sauerbrunn. 

George Weiss died 24 Jul 1912, at the home of his son, Philip E. Weiss, in Anna, aged 78 years, 11

months, 25 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the United Evangelical Church in Jonesboro, of which he was a member.  He walked from his home in Jonesboro to his son’s in Anna Saturday before last and became ill there.  He was born in Germany and served in the German cavalry.  He and his family came to Jonesboro about 1865.  His father died in the 1870s.  He had two brothers, Wilhelm Weiss, of Alto Pass, and Philip Weiss, who committed suicide by taking carbolic acid several years ago, and one sister, Mrs. Peter Peter.  His father and he and his brothers were stone masons.  He retired to garden at his home.  He was married twice.  His last wife died 11 Jan 1911.  He had three sons by his first marriage, Peter Weiss, of Petersburg, Mich., Philip Weiss, of Anna, and George P. Weiss, of Jonesboro, and one daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Bartruff, of south of Jonesboro.

Wilson Corzine died 23 Jul 1912, at home in Anna, aged 71 years, 11 months, 23 days, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  He was born near Anna in 1840 and married Mary A. Davis in 1868.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Anna.

2 Aug 1912:

Mrs. James C. Piersol died Thursday last week (25 Jul 1912) in Memphis, Tenn., and was buried in Villa

Ridge, Pulaski County.  She left a husband, two children, a father, and three brothers in Cairo, Alexander County.

Marshall Crowder died 27 Jul 1912, at home southeast of Anna.  He was born 14 Oct 1869.  His funeral

was at Bethel Baptist Church, where he had been a member 22 years.  He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge in Cobden.  He left a widow and eight children.

9 Aug 1912:

John Hall died Tuesday (6 Aug 1912) at home in Blandsville, Mo., aged 72 years.  He was the twin

brother of F.H. Hall, of Anna.  He left a married daughter with whom he lived.

16 Aug 1912:

Lucinda L. Slack died, aged 73 years, and was buried Wednesday (14 Aug 1912) in Anna.  She was the

wife of Postmaster William P. Slack, of Carbondale, Jackson County.  She used to live in Anna.

23 Aug 1912:

Jacob Penrod died 11 Aug 1912, at home near Alto Pass, aged 67 years, and was buried in the cemetery

beside Walnut Grove Church.  His funeral was at Walnut Grove Methodist Church, where he was a   

member.  He was born in Union County and lived here his entire life.  He left a wife, several children, and grandchildren.

Edwin Angell died 15 Aug 1912, aged 86 years, 5 months, 13 days, and was buried at Cobden.  At his

funeral his casket was placed under the trees and a large audience sat on the lawn, the minister standing just inside the window of his widow’s room where she lay in bed.  As the body was taken away to the cemetery, she said “I’ll soon be with him.”  He was born 2 Mar 1826, in Chorsham, Wiltshire, England.  He married 10 Oct 1862, Eliza Calloway and they were married almost 60 years.  They came to America in 1864 and settled first at Cragin Falls, Ohio.  He was a member of the Christian Church.  In 1865 he moved to Cobden and settled on a farm of the late John S. Rendleman.  He bought a farm midway between Cobden and Alto Pass on fruit ridge.  In 1865 he joined Toledo Christian Church and was a deacon.  He had seven children, of whom Miss Emma Angell and Mrs. Mattie Kavanaugh are deceased.  He left a widow, an aged mother, five children, Mrs. Charlotte Ferrill, Mrs. Sarah Ferrill, of Cobden, Mrs. Mary Tucker and Fred Angell, of Alto Pass, and George Angell, of Sandusky, Alexander County; 21 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Mary Hartline died 18 Aug 1912, at home in Anna, of apoplexy, aged 68 years, 13 days, and she was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was in the yard of her home on Lincoln Street in Anna.  She was born 5 Aug 1849, near Cobden, the youngest child of Paul and Rachel Lingle.  She married on 21 Nov 1865, Benjamin F. Hartline.  She and her husband were charter members in 1881 of the German Reformed Church at Casper, but in February 1892 they transferred to the Congregational church at Anna.  She left a husband, seven sons, John W. Hartline and Oliver F. Hartline, of Tacoma, Wash., Herman E. Hartline, of Portland, Ore., Charles W. Hartline, Willis A. Hartline, Jasper L. Hartline, of Anna, and Homer C. Hartline, of Cobden; two daughters, Ida wife of O.H. Casper and Ella Hartline, of Anna; and 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Silas Lingle and Jackson Lingle; and two sisters, Margaret wife of the late Jacob Rendleman, of Cobden, and Matilda wife of Harris Rendleman Sr., of Anna.

Twin daughters of the Rev. Paul Faris, Mary Faris died on 10 Jul 1912, and Margaret Faris died on 13

Jul 1912, at home at 1 Chow Fu, China, both of dysentery, aged 1 ½ years.

Minnie Lefler died Friday (16 Aug 1912) at the home of Mr. Hargus in Dongola, aged 23 years, and was

buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  Her funeral was at St. John’s Church.  She was a milliner and worked at Sophia Fouss’s store in Anna.

Anna (Lehner) Mayr died 19 Aug 1912, at home in Jonesboro and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery. 

Her funeral was at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at Kornthal, of which she was a member.  She was born 4 Jun 1843, in Austria.  She came to America with her parents in 1855 and settled in Cape Girardeau, Mo.  She married Mattheis Mayr, of Union County, and lived on a farm south of Jonesboro until he died in 1888.   She left one son, Joseph Mayr, Jr.; two daughters, Emma wife of Fred E. Kies, of Jackson, Mo., and Miss Anna Mayr, at home; and one brother and a sister in Missouri.

James Corbit died Wednesday last week (14 Aug 1912) near Lick Creek, aged 76 years.

30 Aug 1912:

Jasper McKinney died 22 Aug 1912, aged 39 years, and was buried at Alto Pass Cemetery.  His funeral

was at the Baptist church in Alto Pass, of which he was a member.  He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and M.W.A. lodges.  He left a wife, two sons, and one daughter.

Joseph Brickey died 24 Aug 1912, of cancer, aged 53 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  His

funeral was at the Baptist church, of which he was a member.  He was also a member of the Odd Fellows and M.W.A. lodges.    He was the section foreman at Alto Pass for 31 years.  He left a widow, two sons, and two daughters.

Eliza Angell died 24 Aug 1912, nine days after her husband’s death, aged 85 years, 9 months, 20 days. 

The same chapter, John 14, was read and the same songs were sung at her funeral as at her husband’s.  She was born and reared in the same place in England as her husband.  She joined the Christian Church with her husband.  She left children and one brother in England.

Alice Cunningham died 28 Aug 1912, in Wagner, Okla., aged 55 years, 3 months, 21 days, and was

buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.  She was the widow of Hugh D. Cunningham.  She left three children, H.J. Cunningham and Roy Cunningham, of Wagner, Okla., and Mrs. B.A. Braddy, of Jonesboro.

John M. Rich died Saturday (24 Aug 1912) at home in Cobden, aged 83 years, 10 months, 23 days, and

was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church in Cobden.  He was born in Alabama, but had lived where he died since he was 6 years old.  He was a captain in the 109^th Regiment and a Mason.  He married on 7 Jan 1848, Anna Uffendale.  They had eight children, seven of whom were living, William C. Rich and Mrs. George C. Parks, of Anna, Michael Rich, George D. Rich, and Robert Rich, of Cobden, Mrs. C.C. Rendleman, of Alto Pass, and Mrs. Charles Cox, of Bedford, Tenn.; 30 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one brother, W.C. Rich, Sr.

13 Sep 1912:

Giles M. Meisenheimer died 5 Sep 1912, at home five miles south of Jonesboro, aged 69 years, 7

months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Lutheran church in Jonesboro.  He was the oldest son of the late John N. Meisenheimer, who, with his wife, came to Union County in 1818.  He married on 9 Sep 1869, Matilda Ann Dougherty.  He was a relative of Josie (Meisenheimer), wife of Arthur Hargrave.  He left a widow, several sons and daughters, Mrs. Edna E. Bankston, of Piggott, Ark., Mrs. Emma E. Hileman, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Birdie A. Angelly and Pearl W. Meisenheimer, of American Falls, Idaho, and Sidney Martin Meisenheimer, at home.

Charles Ritter died 30 Aug 1912, in Los Angeles, Calif.  He was raised from infancy, with his sister,

Emilia Ritter, by Mrs. Catharine Reiss in Jonesboro.

20 Sep 1912:

Robert Abernathie died of consumption at Chicago, aged 33 years.  His funeral was at the

Congregational church in Cobden.  He was born and reared in Union, the youngest child of William and Mary Abernathie.  He taught school.  He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Alto Pass and the Methodist Church.  He left a father, two sisters, Mrs. L.M. Boren and Mrs. H.W. Rendleman, of Jonesboro; and two brothers, Hal Abernathie, of Cobden, and his twin, William Abernathie, of Naylor, Mo.

Mrs. Elizabeth Medlin died Sunday (15 Sep 1912) at home in Anna, aged 80 years.  Her funeral was at

Trinity Church.  She was born in Carrollton, Ky.  She married Marion Millis, who died in 1864 in the army.  She married in 1871 John Medlin, long dead.  She left four children, Mrs. W.W. Williams, Frank Millis, and Wade Medlin, and Thomas Medlin.

27 Sep 1912:

Lon Wells was shot and killed last week in Harrisburg, Saline County, by Ed McCuan, the son of J.C.

McCuan, of Anna.  He was captured in Missouri and charged with murder.

11 Oct 1912:

Mary Donehew died Wednesday (9 Oct 1912) in St. Louis.  Her husband, Kennedy Donehew, was killed

a few years ago by his own train engine.  She left two sons and two daughters.

Richard W. Townsend, son of William E. Townsend, died last Friday (4 Oct 1911) at home near

Cobden, aged 25 years, 8 months, 14 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

18 Oct 1912:

Dr. W.L. Bridwell died 14 Oct 1912, at the home of his son, Jefferson Bridwell, in Jonesboro, aged 75

years, 10 months, 17 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church.  His son brought him from his home in Metropolis to care for him.  His wife was a sister of Miss Betty Pender.  Mrs. T.M. McNeely is his daughter.

Mrs. William Kerr died Thursday last week (10 Oct 1912) at home west of Jonesboro.  She left a

husband and children.

25 Oct 1912:

Frederick T. Angell died 17 Oct 1912, at Bondurant Hospital in Cairo, Alexander County, two days

before his 44^th birthday, and was buried in Alto Pass.  His was the largest funeral procession that ever passed through Alto Pass.  He was in an automobile accident Sunday (13 Oct 1912) a few miles north of Cairo on Beech Ridge and Hodges Park Road near the county farm.  The Ford touring car was driven by F.E. James, of Alto Pass, and both of their wives were also in the car.  He was the youngest son of E. Angell, who died two months ago.  He married Fannie Landreth.  He was a member of the Masonic, Eastern Star, Modern Woodmen, and Royal Neighbors lodges.  He left a widow, three daughters, one son, one brother, George E. Angell, of Sandusky, Alexander County, and three sisters.    (See also 18 Oct 1912, issue.)

1 Nov 1912:

Thomas Donovan died and his funeral was at Villa Ridge.  He married Nellie Rendleman, the youngest

daughter of Henry Rendleman.  He left a widow and daughter.

Miss Elizabeth Doan died Saturday (26 Nov 1912) at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Martha Kirkpatrick

on Northeast Railroad Street in Anna, aged 77 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of W.V. Kirkpatrick.  She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lived in Anna with her cousin 33 years.

8 Nov 1912:

William Dewitt Ashby died 5 Nov 1912, at the home of his grandmother, Susie E. Conklin, aged 5

months, 2 weeks, and 3 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was the son of Dewitt T. and Addie E. Ashby. 

Norman Lumbeck died 18 Sep 1912, in Indio, Calif., from injuries from a horse.  He was reared by the

Rev. John M. Faris near Anna.

Cleo Miller was run over and killed by a car last Wednesday (6 Nov 1912?), aged 6 years.  He was the

son of Mollie Miller, wife of A.C. Stage. 

15 Nov 1912:

Mary C. Sowers died 11 Nov 1912, at home in Jonesboro, aged 83 years, 7 months, 10 days, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside her husband, David Sowers, who died 28 Nov 1910.  They were married 23 Sep 1849.  She was born 1 Apr 1829, in Jonesboro, the daughter of Peter and Sophia Cruse.  She joined the Methodist Church when 15 years old.  She was the aunt of A.H. Roberts, of Murphysboro, Jackson County and grandmother of David Grear, of Herrin, Williamson County, and Fred Grear, of Dunning.  She left two daughters, Mrs. Mary A. Scott and Mrs. John W. Grear, of Jonesboro, one son, James C. Sowers, of Washington, D.C., one brother, Alexander S. Cruse, aged 75 years, of Spokane, Wash., four sisters, Mrs. George W. Walburn, Mrs. Jane Stokes, Mrs. M. Andrews, aged 75 years, and Mrs. M.W. Brown, aged 69 years.

John Philip Roth died 2 Nov 1912, at Albuquerque, N.M., of tuberculosis, aged 23 years, and was buried

at Richmond, Calif.  He was born near Anna and was an attendant at the state hospital.  He also worked for the Santa Fe Railroad.  He left a father, John P. Roth, of Jonesboro, Ark., a sister, Mrs. _____ ____stead, of Stockton, Calif.

Millard F. McLane died Friday (8 Nov 1912) at home in Blodgett, Mo., aged 42 years, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  Oliver Boswell, of Crowder, Mo., brought the body to Anna as a representative of the Modern Woodmen of America.  He was the son of Eli McLane.  Dr. L.D. Keith was a brother-in-law.  He left a widow, two sons, and two daughters.

22 Nov 1912:

Leander W. Nimmo died last Monday (18 Nov 1912) in St. Louis, of throat cancer, aged 65 years, and

was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He lived with his mother until her death last summer, when he went to St. Louis with his family.  He was born in Jonesboro, the oldest son of Col. A.J. Nimmo.  He was a lawyer.  He married in the 1870s Almeda Donehew.  He left a widow, several sons and daughters, one sister, Mrs. John S. Alexander, of Couer d’Alene, Idaho, and one brother, Charles F. Nimmo, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Hiley Toler died 12 Nov 1912, of paralysis, aged about 75 years.  She married on 21 Mar 1854, W.D.

Toler.  She had 12 children.  She left three daughters, two sons, and a husband.

William A. Branson was killed at Balcom, aged 28 years.  Joe Branson, of Carbondale, Jackson County,

identified the body.  He worked at Mounds, Pulaski County, and was on his way to Carbondale to vote.  He was not married.

29 Nov 1912:

Harold Weiss died 16 Nov 1912, of diphtheria, aged 4 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He

was the son of Fred Weiss.

Rose Ann Anderson died 23 Nov 1912, of pneumonia, at her home in Ullin, Pulaski County, aged 71

years, 7 months, 22 days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Dongola.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church in Dongola.  She was born in Vienna, Johnson County, and formerly lived in Union County.  She had been a member of the Methodist Church in Union County.  She left a husband and several children.

Estel M. Parker died Thursday last week (21 Nov 1912) of membraneous croup, aged 7 years, 7 months,

15 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was the daughter of R.D. Parker.

13 Dec 1912:

Mary (Dewitt) Douglas died 9 Dec 1912, at home in Jonesboro, aged 66 years, 1 month, 15 days, and

was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was the widow of Eli Douglas, who died several years ago.  She left one son, several nephews and nieces, and grandchildren.

20 Dec 1912:

Dr. William Standing died last Sunday (15 Dec 1912) in St. Louis, aged 66 years.  He formerly lived in

Jonesboro where his father was connected with milling.

Henry Douglas died 14 Dec 1912, at home in Jonesboro, aged 82 years, 10 months, 18 days, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was born 1 Feb 1830, in Union County, son of Alexander and Mary (Hinkle) Douglas.  He married on 16 Feb 1860, Martha DeWitt.  They had two children, Etta Douglas, who died in infancy, and the late Ida wife of H.J.L. Meisenheimer.  He was a Civil War veteran and member of the G.A.R.  He was a farmer a few miles south of Jonesboro.  He left a widow, five grandchildren, Mattie Meisenheimer, Lula Meisenheimer, Grover Meisenheimer, Jennie Meisenheimer, and Douglas Meisenheimer, one sister, two half brothers, and one half sister.

Edwin Babcock died Tuesday (17 Dec 1912) at home, aged 81 years, 3 months, 5 days, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Presbyterian church, where he was a member.  He was born 11 Sep 1831, in Oneida Co., N.Y., and moved to Bradford Co., Pa., when 12 years old.  He attended Towanda Academy until 18 and then began teaching in Pennsylvania.  He taught the first school in Carbondale, Jackson County, in 1856.  He also taught in Anna and Pulaski County.  He began a strawberry and small fruit business.  He married on 2 May 1861, Rebecca J. Singleton, of Carbondale.  He left a widow; one son, Harry Babcock, of Memphis, Tenn.; four grandsons and one granddaughter, who were the children of his deceased daughter, Mrs. George T. Webb; one brother, Myron Babcock, of St. Louis.  He also reared from infancy Mrs. W.P. Stokes.

27 Dec 1912:

Phillis Irving Anderson died Saturday (21 Dec 1912) at the home of Miss Lou Willard, aged 79 years,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was born in Annan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, and came to America 60 years ago with a brother and a sister.  She married on 2 Jun 1855, David Anderson, also born in Scotland, who died three years ago.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  She left six children.  Miss Elizabeth Anderson, was a daughter.

3 Jan 1913:

Nora, the sister of Mrs. Sam Stokes, died recently and her brother died the next day.  They were children

of Jerry O’Connor.  Their funeral was Monday (30 Dec 1912) at Bloomington.

10 Jan 1913:

Minnie C. Rendleman died 29 Dec 1912, in Los Angeles, Calif., aged 48 years.  She was born in

Jonesboro, the youngest daughter of the late S.P. Spann.  She moved to Alto Pass when 11 years old.  She married Willis Rendleman, who died two years ago.  They had three children born in Alto Pass, Ogle C. Rendleman, Winnie Rendleman, and Willis Rendleman.  She was a member of the Congregational Church.  She moved to California 10 years ago.  She left brothers, Silas Spann, of Alto Pass and Ernest Spann, of Beaumont, Calif, and several half brothers and half sisters.
