Son of Albert Benson died Sunday (27 Dec 1908) east of Dongola, aged 2 years.

Mr. Stevenson died in St. Louis and was buried Sunday (27 Dec1908).  He was formerly from Anna and

was an old soldier.

8 Jan 1909:

Prof. John Snyder died last Sunday (3 Jan 1909) at home in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 52 years, and

was buried in Villa Ridge Cemetery.  He was county superintendent of schools in Alexander County.  His widow was the sister of Mrs. Thomas Norris, of Jonesboro.  He also left three young children.

Nettie Williams, daughter of Capt. A. and Lucy E. Williams, died 19 May 1857, at the Union House in

Jonesboro, aged 2 years, 7 months, 26 days.  The paper was quoting the 23 May 1857, issue of the Jonesboro Gazette.

Ada Poston Beattie, wife of Dr. A.B. Beattie, died Thursday last week (31 Dec 1908) at home at the

Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane in Anna, where her husband was employed, and was buried in Red Bud.  She also left a daughter, Mrs. Jessie Thomas.

Mrs. Annie Lamer died 30 Dec 1908, at home near Cobden, aged 82 years.

Ernest Landon died 22 Dec 1908, in Kokomo, Ind.  He was formerly from Jonesboro.

15 Jan 1909:

W.J. Mathers died in Vienna, Johnson County.  The paper was quoting the 7 Aug 1858, issue of the

Jonesboro Gazette.

George Cox killed himself with a gun near Mt. Pleasant.  The paper was quoting the 7 Aug 1858, issue of

the Jonesboro Gazette.

Elizabeth (Boehmer) Zwahlen died 13 Jan 1909, at home in Jonesboro, aged 68 years, 7 months, and

was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the German Evangelical Church, of which she was a member.  She was born 4 Jan 1844, in Immesheim, Kanton Gollheim, Germany, and came to America in 1867.  She married Christian Zwahlen in Sandoval in 1868.  He died in 1876 and she moved to Jonesboro in 1884.  They had three children, of whom one son, Chris Zwahlen, of Jonesboro, survives.  She also left one brother.  (See also 22 Jan 1909, issue.)

Leonidas Elmer Hartman died 10 Jan 1909, at home near Mill Creek from blood poisoning after an

injury, aged 36 years, 3 months, 7 days, and was buried at St. John’s.  He was a member and officer of the Lutheran church at Mill Creek.  He was injured hauling baled hay that was not tied to the wagon.  He was going down a hill when the bales fell forward and threw him under the wagon.  He broke an arm and a leg.

Amos J. Anderson died 31 Dec 1908, at the home of his father, J.B. Anderson, aged 15 years, 9 months,

and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He lost his sight in an accident two or three years ago.  He was a member of the Baptist church.  He left his parents, brothers, sisters, and an aged grandmother.

Emily M. Driver, formerly of London, England, died in Vienna, Johnson County.  The paper was quoting

the 7 Aug 1858, issue of the Jonesboro Gazette.

22 Jan 1909:

Mary A. Gaunt died 13 Jan 1909, at her home in Grand Chain, Pulaski County, aged 83 years.  She was

the mother of J.W. Roy, of Anna.

A.J. Goddard died Thursday last week (14 Jan 1909) at home near Anna of neuralgia of the heart, and

was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born 16 Nov 1847, in Union County and married on 22 May 1870, Mary Ann Barringer, now deceased.   They had seven sons and six daughters, all living but one son.  They were Mrs. Cora Simmerman, Mrs. Serena Brown, Mrs. J.P. Williams, Amy Goddard, Eva Goddard, Rose Goddard, Homer Goddard, Ralph Goddard, Ernest Goddard, Frank Goddard, Henry Goddard, and John Goddard.  M.V. Goddard, of Anna, and W.H. Goddard, of Carbondale, Jackson County, were brothers.

5 Feb 1909:

Eugene Hale, son of John F. Hale, of Mill Creek, died Monday (1 Feb 1909) aged 2 years, and was

buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County.  He was burned on Saturday (29 Jan 1909) when his clothes caught on fire at the stove.  The family was living at the saw mill west of Mill Creek.

Infant child of Daniel Lence died Thursday (4 Feb 1909) in Anna of pneumonia.

Lucretia “Ella” Ussery, daughter of M.V. Ussery, died yesterday (4 Feb 1909?), aged 44 years, 5 months,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She suffered from rheumatism.  She was a member of the Presbyterian church.  She left one brother, Dr. W.C. Ussery, and one sister.  (See also the 12 Feb 1909, issue.)

12 Feb 1909:

Christina Catherine Reynolds died last Saturday (6 Feb 1909) of stomach trouble in Cape Girardeau,

aged 100 years, 3 months, 9 days.  She was born in Germany and came to America at age 5.

19 Feb 1909:

Minnie Brown, daughter of John W. Brown, of south of Jonesboro, died Monday (15 Feb 1909) of

consumption, aged 16 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Harriet Williams died Wednesday (17 Feb 1909) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Kroger, in St.

Louis, aged 72 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside her husband, George W. Williams, who died in St. Louis several years ago.  She also left a granddaughter, Miss Kora Kroger.  (See also the 26 Feb 1909, issue.) 

Mary Walker, of Golconda, Pope County, was killed Tuesday (16 Feb 1909) in an Illinois Central train

wreck near Carbondale, Jackson County.

Walter B. Long, of Joliet, was killed Tuesday (16 Feb 1909) in an Illinois Central train wreck near

Carbondale, Jackson County.

Serena A. Walton, of Anna, was killed Tuesday (16 Feb 1909), in an Illinois Central train wreck near

Carbondale, Jackson County, aged 75 years, 7 months, 22 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside her husband.  She was the daughter of Winstead Davie and married on 26 Mar 1854, James K. Walton, who died a number of years ago.  She was a member of the Presbyterian church.  She was the mother of Winstead D. Walton, Ed B. Walton, Sheriff James K. Walton, William Walton, Charles Walton, Samuel Walton, Mrs. Mary Merker, of Belleville, St. Clair County.

John L. Newbury died Tuesday (16 Feb 1909) of consumption at the home of his parents in Alto Pass,

aged 23 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He returned from Colorado two weeks ago.  (See also 26 Feb 1909, issue.)

26 Feb 1909:

Dryden Henry Woodworth died Sunday (21 Feb 1909) at Jackson, Tenn., aged 68 years, 6 months, 6

days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Williamsfield, Ohio, and moved to Minnesota, where he enlisted in the army during the Civil War.  He later moved to Anna.  He was a member of the G.A.R.  He left four children, Mrs. A. Ney Sessions, Ed Woodworth, of Dongola, Leonard Woodworth, of St. Louis, and William Woodworth, of Paducah, Ky.

5 Mar 1909:

L.F. Crain died Monday (1 Mar 1909) at home in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County.

12 Mar 1909:

Dr. J. McD. Lawrence died 7 Mar 1909, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Cairo, Alexander County, after gall

stone surgery, aged 49 years and 4 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  His funeral was at Mill Creek Lutheran Church where he became a member in 1888.  He moved to Willard 16 years ago and joined the Methodist Episcopal church.  He married on 3 Nov 1882, Lonnie Blankenship.  They had five sons and four daughters, one daughter preceding him in death.  He also left four brothers.  Sid Lawrence, station agent at Jonesboro, was a brother. 

Maggie Cavitt, wife of Frank Cavitt, died 9 Mar 1909, in Anna, aged 34 years, 11 months, 19 days, and

was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of I.J. McNew on Miller Street in Anna.  Her husband worked on the C.M. Miller farm.

Frank J. Hanners died 3 Mar 1909, of heart trouble, at his home in Murphysboro, Jackson County, and

was buried in Tower Grove Cemetery.  His funeral was Saturday (6 Mar 1909) at Murphysboro.  He was a member of the Eagles, Elks, and Red Man lodges and the Bartenders’ Union.  He was born 21 Mar 1869 in Dongola.

19 Mar 1909:

Margaret Jane Huggins died Thursday (11 Mar 1909) of paralysis of the stomach, aged 79 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  She left three sons, Deputy Sheriff George H. Huggins, Frank Huggins of Missouri, and Andrew Huggins, of Anna; and two daughters, Mrs. I.G. Thomas and Mrs. B.L. Boyce, of Anna.  (See also 26 Mar 1909, issue.) 

Martin V. Brown died 15 Mar 1909, of apoplexy at home in Anna, aged 72 years, 1 month.  His funeral

was at Big Creek Baptist Church.  He was a member of Jonesboro lodge of the I.O.O.F. for nearly 50 years.  His wife died several years ago.  He left several sons and daughters, including County Superintendent W.O. Brown.

Will Sanford died and his funeral was Wednesday (17 Mar 1909) at Anna.  He was an uncle of Collin

Townsend, switchman at East St. Louis, St. Clair County.

26 Mar 1909:

Mrs. Alfred Lingle died Monday (22 Mar 1909) at home in the southern part of the county and was

buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

Hillery Brewer died Monday (22 Mar 1909) at home southeast of Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged

82 years.  He was married twice and was the father of 29 children, of whom 23 were living.

Warren R. Ury died Wednesday (24 Mar 1909) of consumption, at home three miles south of Jonesboro,

aged 47 years, 5 months, 23 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  His funeral was at St. John’s Church.  He left a family.

Guy Seeley drowned 13 Mar 1909, in Okaw River by upsetting of his canoe while on a solo hunting trip. 

He was the founder and publisher of the Red Bud Pilgrim.

 The grandmother of James B. Jackson, of Anna, died Saturday (20 Mar 1909) in Vienna, Johnson

County.

Frank H. Hall died 19 Mar 1909, of pneumonia fever and Bright’s disease, at home in Anna, aged 69

years, 1 month, 15 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in 1840 in Commerce, Mo., the son of William and Minerva Hall.  He moved to Jonesboro when 4 and lived there until 1861.  He went to Cairo and worked as a tinner on government gun boats.  He went to Vienna to enlist in Co. A, 145^th Illinois Infantry and served four and a half years.  He married Flora Ann Elkins in 1866 and moved to Anna in 1874.  He left a widow and six children.

2 Apr 1909:

Mrs. Rhoda A. Shelton died 26 Mar 1909, at home in Jonesboro, aged 78 years, 2 months, 1 day, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal Church.  She was formerly Mrs. G.W. Hall and lived in Hall’s Hill west of Jonesboro.  She was an aunt of Tolbert Massey, of St. Louis.

Dana G. Hunsaker, youngest son of Montgomery Hunsaker, died Tuesday (30 Mar 1909) after

amputation of his arm, aged 26 years, 10 months, 25 days.  He was shot last Saturday (27 Mar 1909) through the arm when a revolver sitting in the seat of his wagon fell to the bed of the wagon and accidentally discharged while he was driving from Alto Pass to his father’s on Hudgeon’s Creek.

Infant son of Ardell Keith died last Friday (26 Mar 1909), aged one month and one week, and was buried

in Alto Pass Cemetery.

Nathaniel Pirtle died Sunday (28 Mar 1909) of pneumonia a few miles west of Alto Pass.

William Davis died at Wolf Lake and was buried in Morgan Graveyard.

David Anderson died 26 Mar 1909, at home in Anna, aged 82 years, 10 months, 26 days, and was buried

in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Scotland and came to America in 1852.  He located in New York City, where he married Phyllis Irving in 1857.  They had nine children.  He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.  He left a widow and six children.

9 Apr 1909:

Matt Davidge, of Mound City, Pulaski County, committed suicide Monday (5 Apr 1909) at his room in

the Newell House in Ullin, Pulaski County, by drinking carbolic acid, aged 29 years.  He worked at Defiance Box Mill in Ullin.

J.R. Wilcoxon died 6 Apr 1909, at home on Bald Knob, aged 55 years, and was buried in Alto Pass

Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist Church of which he was a member.  He was previously a member of the Free Baptist Church.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows.  He was born in Tennessee and came to Union County during the Civil War.  He married Miss McCaslan, who died years ago.  They had four daughters and three sons.  One daughter died a few years ago.

16 Apr 1909:

Charles Lake, son of Mrs. H.L. Walter, died in Montclair, N.J., aged 46 years.  He was a stock broker in

New York City.  He left a wife and five children.

Infant of George H. Stroehlein died Saturday (10 Apr 1909) in Anna, of diphtheria.

George W. Richards died Saturday (10 Apr 1909) at home in Anna, aged 63 years, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  He was in the 136^th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War.  He was a member of the Baptist Church.  He left a wife, five children, one brother, and one sister.

23 Apr 1909:

Eliza J. Turner died 19 Apr 1909, at the home of her son, Perry B. Turner, aged 76 years, 2 months, 23

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Delia Millikin, wife of Jacob Millikin, died 16 Apr 1909, of cancer of the stomach, at home a few miles

west of Alto Pass, aged 23 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She was the daughter of J.R. Wilcoxon and the third of the family to die within a year.  She was a member of the Baptist Church.  She left two children.

Joseph Bartruff, Sr., died 18 Apr 1909, of creeping paralysis, at home south of Jonesboro, aged 40 years,

5 months, 12 days, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  His funeral was at Ebenezer Church.  He was born in Union County and married Mary Bauer, daughter of Martin Bauer.  He left a widow, four sons, two daughters, five brothers, and four sisters.

Dora St. John died 19 Apr 1909, at the home of her father, A.L. Sitter, one and a half miles east of

Cobden, aged 44 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She lived east of Anna until her husband died several years ago.  She was a member of Mt. Moriah Lutheran Church in Anna.  She left a father, two brothers, two sisters, and three children.

Mrs. Amanda Kennedy died 21 Apr 1909, at the home of her nephew, Albert Brady, in Anna, aged 82

years, 11 months, 16 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral mass as at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anna.

30 Apr 1909:

Birch Baltzell died 23 Apr 1909, of consumption at the home of his father, Theo F. Baltzell, three miles

west of Wolf Lake, aged 29 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He was born near Wolf Lake.  Five years ago he moved to St. Louis to work as a barber and returned home six weeks ago.  He left a wife, one child, a father, seven brothers, and four sisters.

Ottis Watkins, only son of J.C. Watkins, died 24 Apr 1909, of malarial attack at his parents’ farm near

Mt. Pleasant, aged 16 years, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  His funeral was at Ebenezer Church in the eastern part of Union County.  His father was an attendant at the hospital in Anna.  The family moved a few weeks ago from Asylum Avenue in Anna to their farm because Ottis wanted to become a farmer. 

7 May 1909:

A relative of Mrs. J.M. Angell died and the funeral was Sunday (2 May 1909) in Goreville, Johnson

County.

A.J. “Dugan” Hunsaker was buried in Williams Cemetery.  He was formerly from Anna, where he was

police magistrate and hotel keeper.  He moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., two years ago with his son-in-law, J. Will Laws.  He left a wife and one daughter.

Mrs. Henry L. Hess died last Friday (30 Apr 1909) of apoplexy at home in Anna, aged 62 years, 10

months, 22 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was born in Union County, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Bean.  She married Henry L. Hess on 6 Jul 1871.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

21 May 1909:

Frank Ware died 17 May 1909, at home in Anna, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral

was at the Presbyterian Church.  He was the youngest son of Jesse Ware.  He left Charles Ware, of Omaha, Neb., and Anna Ware. 

28 May 1909:

Dr. M.L. Wilkerson, of McClure, Alexander County, died Sunday (23 May 1909) at the hospital in Cape

Girardeau, Mo.  He left a widow, Cora (McClure) Wilkerson, daughter of the late S.M.P. McClure.

Three children of Marion McCormick were burned to death Wednesday last week (19 May 1909) in

Herrin, Williamson County.  They were a son aged 2 years, a son aged 5 years, and a daughter aged 4 years.  The children attempted to start a fire with coal oil while the mother was away visiting neighbors.

Ella (Sperry) Morton, wife of Charles Morton, died at her home in New York City and was buried

Thursday last week (20 May 1909) in Cobden Cemetery.  She formerly lived in Anna.

Emma B. Rich, wife of R.L. Rich, died 18 May 1909, of apoplexy, at home in Cobden, aged 42 years. 

Mrs. Harry Rendleman, of Anna, was her sister.

Lula (Green) Russell, wife of L.P. Russell, died at home in Fresno, Calif., and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran Church.  She was the daughter of Florence Green.  She left six brothers, Dan Green and John Green, of Anna, Florence Green, of Jonesboro, Otis Green, of Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, James Green, of Cobden, and Glen Green, of Visalia, Calif.

4 Jun 1909:

Clarence Brown, youngest son of Alson Brown, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. J.H. Eddleman,

near Dongola, aged about 25 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Lutheran church.  He had been living in Missouri.

Capt. Ike Clements died Monday (31 May 1909) at Danville, aged 72 years.  He served as a Republican

member of Congress and was superintendent of the Soldiers’ Home in Danville.  He was formerly from Carbondale, Jackson County.

Andrew Donoven, uncle of C.C. Rendleman, died and his funeral was at Unity, Alexander County.  He

was formerly from Alto Pass.  He left a widow and children.

Cora C. Halterman, wife of Jacob A. Halterman, died 29 May 1909, of consumption, at home in Anna,

aged 30 years, 3 months, 7 days, and was buried in Campground Cemetery.  Her funeral was at Campground Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  She left a husband and four children.

D. Wilborn Smith died 29 May 1909, at home on South Jefferson Street, Anna, aged 73 years, 2 months,

16 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was a Mason and served four terms as alderman.  He was born in North Carolina and came to Illinois when 14.  He was a member of the 81^st Illinois Infantry during the Civil War and worked as a carpenter.  He married on 17 Jan 1859, Temperance M. Standard, who died years ago.  They had seven children, those living were Mrs. B.W. Dillow, Fred W. Smith, Addie L. Smith, Frank Smith, of Anna, and Mrs. Platt, of Shreveport, La. 

John T.S. Linn died at his farm near McClure, Alexander County, aged 61 years, 5 months, 17 days, and

was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  He had been plowing and went to a slough to wash his face and died there.  It was originally assumed he drowned trying to ford the stream.  His funeral was at his home on North Main Street in Jonesboro.  He was born near Newberry, S.C., the son of the Rev. Joseph A. Linn of the Lutheran Church in Rowan Co., N.C.  His mother’s maiden name was Schuler.  The Rev. J.A. Linn, of Rockwell, N.C., was his half brother.  He was educated at college in Mt. Pleasant, N.C., and came to Union County in 1869.  He married in 1871 Ellen F. Goodman, daughter of Moses A. Goodman.  He was a farmer and ran a mercantile business in Dongola.  He moved to Jonesboro in 1891 and ran an implement business.  He left a widow and seven children, Mrs. George J. Heilig, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Emil Melzer, of Effingham, J. Hugh Linn, of California, Maggie A. Linn, Samuel G.  Linn, and Beulah E. Linn.  (See also 11 Jun 1909, issue.)

11 Jun 1909:

Judge John J. Townes died at his home in Modesto, Calif., aged 76 years.  He was born in Franklin

County and went to California in 1853.  He was a brother of Col. R.R. Townes, who used to live in Jonesboro and died in Alabama.

Sanford W. Beckwith, of near Cobden, died Monday (7 Jun 1909) at the hospital in Anna, aged 79 years,

and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 

18 Jun 1909:

Mrs. E.J. Atkins died 15 Jun 1909, at the home of her son, D.H. Atkins, aged 73 years, 10 months, 7

days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church, where she was a member.

25 Jun 1909:

Magdalena Gattermeier died 20 Jun 1909, at the home of her nephew, William Obermeier, five miles

west of Jonesboro, aged 79 years, 2 months, 4 days, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery south of Jonesboro.  She was born in Wallern, Austria and came to Union County in 1886.  Fred Obermeier and William Obermeier were her only relatives in this country.

W.T. Boone died 17 Jun 1909, at the Soldiers’ Home in Quincy, where he had been only a few days.  His

funeral was at his home on Chestnut Street, Anna.  He came to Anna in 1860 and in 1861 enlisted in the 60^th Illinois, serving but a short time.  He carried the mail from Anna to Cape Girardeau, then worked as a barber until his retirement.  He married in January 1863 Piety Musgrave, who died in April 1873.  He married 2^nd in August 1873 Mrs. Artie Bartlett.   He was a member of the I.O.O.F.  He left a widow and one daughter by his first marriage.  (See also 18 Jun 1909, issue.)

2 Jul 1909:

Georgie Barringer Collard died 30 Jun 1909, after being burned in a gasoline explosion in San Antonio,

Texas, where she was visiting, and was buried in San Antonio.  He left a husband, two sons, two sisters, Mrs. Frank Karraker, of Cypress, Johnson County, and Mary of Denver, Colo., one brother, Polk Barringer, of Cairo, Alexander County, and an uncle, A.R. Byrd, of San Antonio, Texas.

9 Jul 1909:

Martha Frances Campbell died 3 Jul 1909, aged 22 years, 9 months, 12 days, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born in Jonesboro 28 Sep 1886, the daughter of A.S. Tibbets.  She graduated from high school in 1905 and taught two years.  She married on 19 Jun 1907, James C. Campbell.  She also left two brothers and three sisters.  (See also 16 Jul 1909, issue.)

Danna Morgan, youngest daughter of James Morgan, died 3 Jul 1909, of consumption, at the home of

her mother in Jonesboro, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.  She left a mother and several brothers and sisters.

Nelson H. Hileman died Wednesday (7 Jul 909) of paralysis at the hospital, aged 35 years, 2 months, 7

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at the home of his brother, R.L. Hileman.  He was a Mason.  He was an agent for the M & O Railroad in Ava for 10 years and in Campbell Hill for three years.  He left a widow, a father, J.W. Hileman, of Mill Creek, five brothers, Oliver Hileman and Jeff Hileman, of Mill Creek, Robert L. Hileman, of Jonesboro, Will O. Hileman, of Charleston, S.C., and James Hileman, of Murphysboro, Jackson County; and one sister, Mrs. Charles W. Hileman, of Jonesboro.  (See also 16 Jul 1909, issue.)

Mike Fettinger died Friday (2 Jul 1909) at Goreville, Johnson County, and was buried in Cobden

Cemetery.  He was a tinner in Jonesboro years ago and played the accordion.

B.L. Short, of Kansas City, Mo., brother-in-law of W.W. Wiley of Anna, died Monday (5 Jul 1909).

16 Jul 1909:

Mr. Stedman died Friday (9 Jul 1909) and was buried in Alto Pass.  He lived alone in the hills west of

Alto Pass and was found ill.  His son from Oberlin, Ohio, and son-in-law from Chicago arrived for the funeral at the Baptist church.

Lewis Eugene Mattingly, infant son of George A. Mattingly, died  Monday (12 Jul 1909) at home in

Anna, aged 1 year, 1 month, 21 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Josephine Zimmeran died Sunday (11 Jul 1909) at the home of her mother, Mrs. Venesi Penrod, in

Dongola, aged 26 years, 10 months, 7 days.  She was married a few years ago in Anna during the Hustlers meeting.

Capt. E.C. English died Thursday last week (8 Jul 1909) of throat cancer at home in Anna.  His funeral

was at the Catholic church.  He lived in Anna nearly 30 years and was a contractor and builder.  He left a widow, two sons, and one daughter.

Mrs. Lawson Bishop died at her home in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, and was buried Monday (12 Jul

1909) in Anna Cemetery.

23 Jul 1909:

Edward Cuhl died 20 Jul 1909, of typhoid fever at St. Mary’s Infirmary in Cairo, Alexander County,

aged 83 years, and was buried in Dongola.  His birthday was 6 Aug.  He moved to Dongola 53 years ago and was a wheat buyer.  He left two sons, R.A. Cuhl, a merchant in Dongola, and Edward Cuhl.—Cairo Citizen, 21 Jul 1909.

E.M. Powell died Monday (19 Jul 1909) at the home of his nephew, Sherman Williams, five miles east of

Anna, and was buried in Williams Cemetery.  His funeral was at Trinity Church.  He was hoeing potatoes and had a heart attack.  He was born in Union County in 1846.  He married in 1873 Joanna Williams.  He left five children, John W. Powell and James F. Powell, of Anna, Miles M. Powell, of Lick Creek, Mrs. George Hankla, of Western Saratoga, and Mrs. Francis Dillow.

30 Jul 1909:

Neri C. Lyerly died 24 Jul 1909, and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery.  He was the youngest son of

Moses Lyerly, who lives four miles west of Wolf Lake.  He moved to Illmo, Mo., to study law and two years ago was elected mayor.  He left a father, one brother, a widow, and three children.

6 Aug 1909:

Daughter of Arthur Ecker died at home south of Jonesboro, aged 2 years, and was buried in Jonesboro

Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.

Rachel Reemes died Tuesday (3 Aug 1909) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Hess, aged 76

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Traugett E. Meyr died last Friday (30 Jul 1909) at Hale Sanitarium in Anna, aged 52 years, 4 months, 19

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was a member of the I.O.O.F.  He was born in Cape Girardeau Co., Mo., and lived in Jonesboro “a good many years.”  His wife and one child died many years ago.  He left three brothers and one sister.  One sister and one brother from Missouri came for the funeral.

John Kohler died 30 Jul 1909, at home seven miles south of Jonesboro, aged 74 years, 2 months, 10 days,

and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  His funeral was at Ebenezer Church.  He came from Germany to Union County when 20 years old.  He left a widow and eight children, Mrs. Henry Hilson, Mrs. Michael Weber, Mrs. Sidney Gore, Albert Kohler, John Kohler, Mrs. Oliver Hileman, Will Kohler, and Mrs. Harley Miller.

Walter Cole, of Marshall, Ill., died at the Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane in Anna.  He was a

former member of the lower house of the Illinois legislature.

13 Aug 1909:

John C. Hileman died 6 Aug 1909, at the home of Mrs. Amanda Mullins, age 46 years, 7 months, 10

days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was the son of H.D. Hileman, of Alto Pass.  He married in July 1884 Anna P. Mullins.  They had seven children, of whom five were living, Harry C. Hileman, Madie Hileman, James H. Hileman, Fred Hileman, and Mrs. George Reeves, of Portageville, Mo.

20 Aug 1909:

Mrs. Turner died and was buried in New Madrid Co., Mo.  She was a member of the Methodist

Episcopal Church.  She left a husband and three small children.

27 Aug 1909:

Harry Willoughby died in Kansas and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist

church.  He was the son of W.H. Willoughby.  He resided in Reynoldsville until several weeks ago.  His brother, Ralph Willoughby, of Wichita, Kan., brought the body home for burial.  (See also 3 Sep 1909, issue.)

James W. Wheeler died Thursday last week (19 Aug 1909) of congestion of the brain, at home in Anna,

aged nearly 60 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church.  He left a wife and two daughters.

Grover Hicks Cozby died last Friday (20 Aug 1909) at St. Mary’s Infirmary in Cairo, Alexander County,

after an appendicitis operation, aged 17 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Presbyterian church in Cairo.  He was the son of J. Warren Cozby, of Cairo, Alexander County, and nephew of T.C. Cozby, of Jonesboro.  Two years ago his older brother, Barney Cozby, was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Juliet A. Miller died 21 Aug 1909, at the home of her former sister-in-law, Mrs. Adelia Dougherty, in

Jonesboro, aged 75 years, 11 months, 6 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery, beside her first husband, Dr. James V. Brooks.  Her funeral was last Sunday (22 Aug 1909) at the Baptist church in Jonesboro.  She was born in Bath, N.Y., the daughter of Augustus C. and Annie Rixleben.  Her father was born in Germany and after his daughter was born moved to Jonesboro.   He died in Jonesboro in 1840, aged 44 years, leaving a widow, one daughter and two sons.  His widow married John E. Naill and left one daughter, Mrs. Harriet M. Spann, of Anna.  Juliet was educated at St. Louis and married on 17 Oct. 1856, Dr. James V. Brooks, who died 17 Jun 1872.  She joined the Baptist church the same year she married.  They had one son, David G. Brooks, who died 14 Apr 1893.  She married N.G. Miller, who died 28 Jan 1905.  She left one brother, Bruno Rixleben, of Jonesboro, and one half sister, Mrs. Spann.  Her other brother, Charles Rixleben, deceased, was once married to Adelia Dougherty.

Eda C. Cowdery died 25 Aug 1909, at the home of her aunt, Rebecca Grear, in Jonesboro, aged 73

years, 8 months, 4 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church.  She was the daughter of the Rev. Simeon Dilday, former pastor of the Baptist church in Jonesboro.  She had three sisters, all deceased, Mrs. A.H. Crowell, Mrs. Eliza Lence, and Mrs. Amanda McElfresh Brown.  Her husband died years ago in Tennessee.  She joined the Baptist Church in Jonesboro in 1850.

3 Sep 1909:

Mrs. Lee (Slaughter) Burris died last Saturday (28 Aug 1909) at her home in the bottoms, aged about 30

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was reared in Wolf Lake.  She left a husband and several children.

Son of James M. Johnson died suddenly Monday (30 Aug 1909) near Ware in the bottoms, aged 17

years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

J.B. Barber died Wednesday (1 Sep 1909) in his room at the Stevens House in Jonesboro, aged about 70

years, and was buried in Waverly, Iowa.  He was overcome with heat last Saturday (28 Aug 1909).  He came to Union County from Iowa years ago.  He lived alone in a tent on his farm.  He was divorced and left several children.  Mrs. Harry Finkbine, of Atlanta, Iowa, and William R. Barber, of Gulfport, Miss., were his children.  (See also 17 Sep 1909, issue).

J. Henry Hilboldt, Jr., committed suicide 19 Aug 1909, in his vacant house in the north part of Jonesboro,

and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His badly decomposed body was found Sunday (29 Aug 1909) by his father in the northeast corner of the northeast room of the house where he shot himself with a revolver.  He would have been 30 years old last Tuesday (31 Aug 1909).  He was a bookkeeper in the Union County Milling Company and a member of the Baptist church.  He had health concerns.  He left one brother, Grover Hilboldt, a traveling salesman for Carleton Dry Goods Co., St. Louis.

10 Sep 1909:

Mrs. Frank Whalen died Saturday (4 Sep 1909) at home in Balcom.

Charles Crooks died Wednesday (8 Sep 1909) in Cairo, Alexander County, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.

17 Sep 1909:

Myrtle Mae Manus died 11 Sep 1909, at home two and a half miles west of Jonesboro, aged 24 years, 11

months, 4 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Joseph T. Lockey died Monday (13 Sep 1909) at home in Anna, aged 69 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  He was a member of the G.A.R.  He came to Anna several years ago from Shelby Co., Mo.  He left a wife, three daughters, and two sons, James Lockey and Robert Lockey.

Willis Boyed committed suicide Monday (13 Sep 1909) by putting a stick of dynamite on his left

shoulder and touching a lit match to it while in a silica mine, aged 25 years.  He worked in the silica mine of H.S. Tripp west of Jonesboro.  He left parents, a wife, and a child.  His father-in-law, William H. Corbin, used to live west of Jonesboro.

Thomas Dickey died recently in Mounds, Pulaski County.  He was a plasterer and formerly lived in

Anna.

24 Sep 1909:

Mrs. Mary Hardin died Tuesday (21 Sep 1909) in Alto Pass, aged 67 years, and was buried in Alto Pass. 

She was a member of the Baptist church.

Mrs. T.N. Karraker died Tuesday (21 Sep 1909) of consumption, in Mounds, Pulaski County, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  Mrs. W.O. Brown, of Jonesboro, was her half sister.

Reuben Dougherty died in Reynoldsville when a limb fell from a tree and hit him on the head, aged

about 28 years.  He was from Grand Tower, Jackson County.

1 Oct 1909:

Henry Crisp, son of John Crisp, died Monday (27 Sep 1909) of lock jaw, aged nearly 16 years, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He stepped on a nail two weeks ago.  He left his parents and several brothers and sisters.  Ernest Crisp was his oldest brother and was a teacher in Jonesboro school.  Mrs. Blackstone, his oldest sister, lives in Minneapolis, Minn.

Daniel Emmett “Lip” Morris died Thursday last week (23 Sep 1909) of Bright’s disease, at home in

Anna, aged 44 years, 11 months, 23 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

8 Oct 1909:

Son of John Lyerla died of membranous croup, aged 6 years, and was buried Wednesday (6 Oct 1909)

in Alto Pass Cemetery.

Mrs. Sarah Richards died Tuesday (5 Oct 1909) at home in Anna, aged 61 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  She left five children.

22 Oct 1909:

Robert V. Treece died Sunday (10 Oct 1909) at the home of his mother, Mrs. Susan A. Brann, in Anna,

aged 39 years, and was buried in Campground Cemetery.

Joseph W. Schmidt died last Friday (15 Oct 1909) of lagrippe and neuralgia of the heart, at the home of

his father-in-law, James A. Wells, in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was the son of Mrs. Louisa Smith, of west of Jonesboro.

29 Oct 1909:

Joseph C. Ransmeier died 25 Oct 1909, of cancer of the stomach, at home on South Main Street,

Jonesboro, aged 69 years, 5 months, 2 days, and was buried in Grieb Cemetery.  He was born in Austria and came to America in 1854.  He lived south of Jonesboro until five years ago when he moved to town.  He was a member of Kornthal Lutheran Church.  He married in 1871 Barbara Metzger.  He left two daughters, Mrs. L.E. Reischauer and Mrs. M.J. Detriech, and two brothers, John Ransmeier, of Jonesboro, and Michael Ransmeier, of Murphysboro, Jackson County.

Nancy Gibson died 18 Oct 1909, in Alto Pass, aged 77 years, and was buried in New Hope Graveyard. 

Her funeral was at the Congregational church.  She left one granddaughter, Rosetta Gibson.

5 Nov 1909:

Capt. John Hodges, of Alexander County, died Wednesday last week (27 Oct 1909) in Dawson Springs,

Ky., aged 74 years, and was buried at Unity, Alexander County.

Willis Lingle died 29 Oct 1909, at home northeast of Anna, aged 53 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.

Isaac Bizzle died 1 Nov 1909, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.W. Greib, six miles southeast of

Anna, aged 88 years, 7 months, 25 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Harlan P. Tuthill died Tuesday (2 Oct 1909) at Mulianphy Hospital, St. Louis, of heart failure following

surgery on his eye, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Presbyterian church where he was a member.  He was born 31 Oct 1842, in Vergennes, Ill.  He came to Anna in 1868 and lived on Main Street.  He was a clerk for the late C.M. Willard and cashier of First National Bank in Anna.  He left a widow, two sons, Russell Tuthill and Louis Tuthill, one daughter, Sophronia Tuthill, and two sisters, Mrs. M.B. Jenks, of Panama City, Fla., and Laura M. Tuthill, of Quincy, Adams County.

12 Nov 1909:

Anna Pelley was murdered at Cairo, Alexander County.

Charles Holland died Monday (8 Nov 1909) in Sheridan, Wyo.  He married Luella Robinson, of Anna,

in Buffalo, Wyo., about 17 years ago.  His widow was a sister of Mrs. Dr. D.W. Grear.  He left no children.

Infant daughter of Charles Willard, of San Antonio, Texas, died Monday (8 Nov 1909).  She was born 17

Oct 1909.

19 Nov 1909:

Henry Salzner was lynched Thursday last week (11 Nov 1909) and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He

was the son of Billy Salzner who lived in Anna many years ago.

Martha Jane Chester died Sunday (14 Nov 1909) at her home in Anna, aged 62 years, 9 months, 7 days,

and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.  She was born a few miles from Jonesboro, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Brown.  She left three sons and one daughter.

Mrs. Sarah M. Herin, of Cobden, died Friday (12 Nov 1909), aged 72 years.

Miss Mary Whalen died Sunday (14 Nov 1909) at her home in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, of heart

trouble, following her receipt of the news of the death of Anna Pelley, her close friend, and was buried in Anna Cemetery, 50 feet from the grave of her friend.  She was the daughter of William Whalen, formerly of Anna, who married the widow of James Costigan.

Mrs. David Corzine died 11 Nov 1909, of consumption at Balcom.  She was the sister of Mrs. Cal

Hofner and Miss Sada Rushing.

Thomas Wood, of Carterville, Williamson County, was killed Friday (12 Nov 1909) by Edwin Skillman,

of Centralia, at the Illinois Southern Hospital for the Insane, by being hit with a marble slab while in bed.  Skillman was sent to the hospital for the criminally insane in Chester.

17 Dec 1909:

Lyman G. Caster died Wednesday last week (8 Dec 1909) of typhoid fever, at home in Mound City,

Pulaski County, aged 57 years.  He was county judge in Pulaski County and left a family.

Mrs. Flora Plue Saturday (11 Dec 1909) at the home of her mother, Mrs. Rosa Brooks, in Anna.  Louis

Brooks and Frank Brooks, were her brothers.

The daughter of Stella (Stokes) Speaker, formerly of Anna, was run down in the street and killed at Pine

Bluff, Ark., aged 4 years.

24 Dec 1909:

Robert E. Seeley died last week of pneumonia at his home in Grand Tower, Jackson County, aged about

67 years, and was buried Friday (17 Dec 1909) in Cobden.

Julia A. Musselman died 20 Dec 1909, aged 72 years, 6 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro

Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of William J. Musselman in Jonesboro.  She was a sister of the late George Williams.  She left two children, William J. Musselman and Minnie Musselman, who was employed in a hospital at Kankakee.

Sarah J. Davis died 17 Dec 1909, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wilson Corzine, aged 98 years, 4

days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church, which she joined at age 18.  She was born in North Carolina.

Mrs. William H. Treece died 21 Dec 1909, in Herrin, Williamson County, aged 52 years, and was buried

in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Christian church in Anna.  She lived in Anna many years ago.

Annie Noble died Tuesday (21 Dec 1909) at home in Balcom, aged 14 years.  She was the daughter of

H.S. Noble.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church in Dongola.

31 Dec 1909:

William Butcher died 22 Dec 1909.  He was unmarried.  William Butcher Stearns, of Jackson County,

was his nephew.

7 Jan 1910:

Bertha (Storm) Jenkins died (20 Nov 1909) in Iba, Zambales Province, Philippines, of bascillary

dysentery and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She contracted the disease in Japan and became ill after attending a banquet given by the provincial governor.  Her remains were shipped from Manilla on 4 Dec 1909.  She was a daughter of E.H. (Mrs. O.P.) Storm, of Carbondale, Jackson County. Mrs. James Walton and Mrs. Robert Renfro, of Carbondale, were sisters.  (See also 21 Jan 1910, issue.)

John Kent, of Chicago, fell from the passenger train near Balcom and was killed Thursday last week (30

Dec 1909).  His brother arrived from Chicago.
