Thorpe was shot and killed last Sunday (30 Dec 1906) in Ullin, Pulaski County, City Marshall Saxton.

Infant child of O.F. and Minnie (Barringer) Culver, of Nashville died Monday (30 Dec 1906) and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.

11 Jan 1907:

Mrs. D.J. Mull died last Friday (4 Jan 1907) at home in the bottoms, of Bright’s disease, aged 65 years,

and was buried in Morgan Cemetery.  She left a husband, several grown children, and a brother, Henry Douglas, of south of Jonesboro.

Eva K. Ditter died Saturday (5 Jan 1907) at home in Jonesboro, aged 61 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Lutheran church.  She left a husband, Philip Ditter, and several grown children.  Mrs. Eva K. Engelhart was a daughter.

Martha Ann Lyon Holcomb died 25 Nov 1906, in Ocean Springs, Miss.  She was born in 1833 in

Vermont and married in 1856 Thomas A.E. Holcomb, who died in Ocean Springs in 1897.  She moved to Ocean Springs from Cobden in 1886.

Son of J. Rooney was killed when he fell from his chair and struck his head on a coal box in Paris, aged 1

year.  They had recently been visiting J. Rooney’s brother, John Rooney, in Anna.

18 Jan 1907:

Sister of Robert Duncan and John Duncan died Monday (14 Jan 1907) in St. Louis.

Ira E. Brooks was run over by a train and killed in East St. Louis and buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was

the son of James Brooks, who owned a grocery store on Railroad Street in Anna.

Herbert Keas committed suicide by taking poison at Shawnee, Okla., aged 26 years, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  He was the son of G.F. Keas of southeast of Anna, and a brother of Arthur Keas of Baton, N.M.

Edna Earle Hertz died 16 Jan 1907, at home of her parents three and a half miles from east of Anna, aged

4 years and 4 months.  She was the daughter of August A. Hertz.

Mr. Harris was murdered by Traverse and McDonald.  They were found guilty in Mound City, Pulaski

County and Traverse was sentenced to 20 years in the penitentiary and McDonald was sent to the state reformatory for manslaughter.

Ira Knupp died Friday (11 Jan 1907) of quick consumption at home north of Anna, aged 39 years, and

was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He left a wife and two children.  He was the son of John Knupp of south of Anna.  His widow went to St. Louis to live in February 1907.  (See also 1 Mar 1907, issue.)

Luther M. Treece died 12 Jan 1907, at home two and a half miles north of Anna of severe hemorrhages,

and was buried in Casper Cemetery.  He was the son of the late Martin Treece.  He left a wife, two children, a mother, and several brothers and sisters.

25 Jan 1907:

Frank J. Zoellner died Saturday (19 Jan 1907) of tuberculosis, at the home of his sister, aged about 35

years, and was buried in Cape Girardeau, Mo.  He was formerly of Jonesboro and was a butcher.  He left a 14-year-old daughter.  His wife also died of tuberculosis.—Thebes Star

Peter A. Sitter died Sunday (20 Jan 1907) at home east of Anna, of neuralgia of the heart, aged 53 years,

11 months, 26 days.  His funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church.  He left a wife, seven sons, a sister, and several brothers.

1 Feb 1907:

Charles H. Anderson died 27 Jan 1907, of pneumonia and Bright’s disease, at his home in Jonesboro,

aged 38 years, 7 months, 18 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He was the son of B.H. Anderson.  He left a widow, one son, one daughter, three brothers, Henry Anderson, of East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Will Anderson, and Frank Anderson, of Jonesboro; and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Terpinitz, of Jonesboro.

Martin Bauer died 24 Jan 1907, of cancer, at his home southeast of Jonesboro, aged 51 years, 3 months, 1

day, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery.  He was born near Jonesboro on 23 Oct 1855, and married on 5 Jun 1884, Mrs. Theresa Bauer.  They had two daughters, one who died in infancy.   He was a member of Ebenezer Church.  He also left three stepdaughters and two brothers, John Bauer, of south of Jonesboro, and Joseph Bauer, of Jonesboro.

Daughter of Warren Hunt died Saturday (26 Jan 1907) in a house fire six miles east of Dongola, aged 3

years.

8 Feb 1907:

Infant of W.R. Drummond, born Sunday (3 Feb 1907), died Tuesday (5 Feb 1907) and was buried in

Anna Cemetery. 

Mrs. John M. Lansden died last week in Cairo, Alexander County.

John Cruse died last Saturday (2 Feb 1907), aged 81 years, and was buried beside his wife in the old

family burying ground at the homestead south of Jonesboro.  His funeral was at the old residence one mile west of Springville.  He was born about one and a half miles east of Mill Creek.  His father moved to Jonesboro with another son, Charles Cruse, and owned a mercantile business.  He left a son, Henry C. Cruse, of Wolf Lake; one daughter, Mrs. John Miller; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas Ury and Mrs. John Hileman.

Adeline Brown died 2 Feb 1907, of quick consumption, one and a half miles west of Mill Creek, aged 45

years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Eli Meisenheimer of Meisenheimer Settlement south of Jonesboro.  She was a member of St. John’s German Reformed Church.  She left a husband, Columbus Brown, two children from her marriage to Michael Rinehart, five children from her marriage to Brown, three brothers, one sister, Mrs. Franklin Hileman; and one half sister in Johnson County.

15 Feb 1907:

The Rev. J.C. Beade died Tuesday (12 Feb 1907) of consumption, and was buried in Milton Junction,

Iowa.  His funeral was at the German Reformed Church at Mill Creek, where he served as pastor.  He was a Mason, member of the Odd Fellows and K. of P. and a Civil War veteran.  He left a widow and one son.

Mrs. Margaret Pelley died 11 Feb 1907, at home in Anna, aged 65 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Catholic Church.  She had 11 children, of whom five sons and four daughters were living.

William A. Selden died 9 Feb 1907, at home in Anna, aged 81 years, 9 months, 9 days, and was buried in

Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Connecticut and came to Anna in 1856.  He was a member of the Congregational Church.  He left a widow and son, J. Ed Selden, of East St. Louis, St. Clair County.

22 Feb 1907:

Frank Potts was found dead a LaRue.

Eliza Garner James died 15 Feb 1907, at Ullin, Pulaski County, aged 82 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  She lived south of Jonesboro and in Anna many years ago.  She was the oldest living member of 1^st Baptist Church of Jonesboro.  She first married Michael Miller.  Mrs. Charles W. Cook, deceased, was her daughter.  She left 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. 

1 Mar 1907:

Flossie Glasco, daughter of Mrs. Medill Glasco, died Monday (25 Feb 1907), aged 2 years, and was

buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She also left a brother and sister.

John C. Tripp died Thursday (21 Feb 1907) of pneumonia at home near Kornthal, aged 37 years, and was

buried in Frick Cemetery west of Jonesboro.  He was the son of H.S. Tripp and left a widow and four children.

Ella Frick, wife of Will Frick, died of consumption.  She was the daughter of S.R. Green.  She left a

little daughter.

Mrs. Elizabeth C. Cruse Hileman died 24 Feb 1907, at home south of Jonesboro, aged 75 years, and was

buried at St. John’s.  She was the widow of John Hileman.  She was a member of St. John’s Church for over 50 years.  She left two sisters, Mrs. Christena Troutman, of Fillmore, and Mrs. Leah Ury, of south of Jonesboro; a daughter, and three sons, Frank Hileman, Charles Hileman, and Henry Hileman.

Salome Hess died 23 Feb 1907, at home of her daughter, Mrs. C.J. Boyd, south of Anna, aged 80 years, 6

months, and 7 days.  She was born in Salisbury, Rowan Co., N.C., on 16 Aug 1826.  She came to Jonesboro with her parents in 1830.  She married John Hess in July 1846.  Her home was recently destroyed by fire.  She left two sisters, Mrs. Annie Hileman and Miss Melinda Craver.  She had 11 children, three of whom died in infancy.  Among her children were Mrs. Jasper Smith, Mrs. J. Hileman, Mrs. T.J. Menees, and Mrs. C.J. Boyd; 31 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Son of O. Daniel, of Pulaski, Pulaski County, aged 6 months, was buried in Anna Cemetery.

John H. Maxfield died last Friday (22 Feb 1907), aged 42 years.  His funeral was at the home of his

sister, Mrs. George A. Leird.  He was a railroader.

8 Mar 1907:

Julia Henry died 4 Mar 1907, of consumption, aged 40 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Son of Dr. J.C. Stewart died Tuesday (5 Mar 1907), aged 10 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

J.L. Gardner died Monday (4 Mar 1907) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.T. Boone, aged 83 years,

and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Mrs. Pack Sheppard died Friday (1 Mar 1907) at Musgrave Place and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 

She left a husband.

Alice Parker died 28 Feb 1907, at home in Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged 20 years.  She was the

daughter of B.F. Parker.

Maude Cassel died Sunday (3 Mar 1907) of consumption at the home of her mother, Mrs. Martin Treece

north of Anna, aged 26 years.  She was the wife of Alonzo Cassel and left a husband, mother, and several brothers and sisters.

Son of I.F. Holcomb died 27 Feb 1907, aged a few hours.

Angelina G. Tucker died 28 Feb 1907, of pneumonia, at the home of her only child, Ashby Tucker, aged

about 70 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  She lived in Richmond, Va., and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Mary A. Simons died 28 Feb 1907, at her home in Charleston, Mo., aged 81 years, 11 months, 12 days,

and was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the home of her son-in-law, F.L. Brown.  She was the oldest daughter of John S. Hacker and married about 1843 Amalphus W. Simons.  He served in the Mexican War and sent to California in 1849.  She joined the Baptist Church in Jonesboro over 50 years ago.  She personally knew Stephen A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln.  She had three children, of whom one daughter was living.

Christena L. Troutman died 5 or 6 Mar 1907, near Chapman, Montgomery County, aged 84 years, 2

months, 17 days.  She was born 16 Dec 1822, in Union County.  She joined St. John’s Lutheran Church at an early age and in 1871 joined Bost Hill Lutheran Church.  She married Henry Cruse, who died 4 Jul 1865.  She married in 1871 Simon P. Troutman, who died four years ago. She formerly lived in Jonesboro with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Klutts.  She had five brothers, Charles Cruse, Sandy Cruse, John Cruse (who died in the last few weeks), Peter Cruse, and Henry Cruse; and two sisters Elizabeth C. Hileman (who died in the last few weeks) and Leah Ury, who alone survived.  She also left three stepchildren.  (See also 15 Mar 1907, issue.)

Philip Ditter died Saturday (2 Mar 1908), aged 29 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His

funeral was at Salem Lutheran Church.  He was not married and left a father, one brother, and several sisters.

15 Mar 1907:

Jacob R. Rhodes died 11 Mar 1907, of pneumonia, at home west of Alto Pass, aged 61 years, and was

buried in Bittle Cemetery.  He was a member of I.O.O.F., Jonesboro Masonic lodge, and Anna G.A.R. post.  He owned land at the forks of Hudgeons and Clear Creeks.  He enlisted in February 1862 in Col. S.C. Toler’s 60^th Infantry and was with Gen. Sherman in his March to the Sea.  He left a widow and several grown children.

22 Mar 1907:

Mrs. W.W. Wiley died 17 Mar 1907, of pernicious anemia, at home in Anna, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  She was born 9 May 1859, in College Springs, Iowa, the daughter of John F. and Rebecca (Hutton) Short.  She married W.W. Wiley on 20 Sep 1896.

29 Mar 1907:

Mother of H.R. Buckingham died in Miamiville, Ohio.

Infant of Adam Stearns died last week and was buried in Jerusalem Cemetery, Jackson County.

Mrs. Joe Hill, sister of Samuel Knupp, died last Saturday (22 Mar 1907) at McClure, Alexander County.

Lathan C. Arnold died 16 Mar 1907, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.F. James, aged 70 years.  He

was born in Kentucky and moved to Alto Pass 20 years ago.  He was a veteran and member of the Baptist church.  His son Charles Arnold was killed a year ago after falling from a train.  He left three children, Mrs. G.F. James, W.J. Arnold, and Otto Arnold.

5 Apr 1907:

Robert P. Owen died 3 Apr 1907, of consumption, at home in Sandusky, Alexander County, aged 59

years, 3 months, 29 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was formerly from Jonesboro and his funeral was at the Baptist church.  He left a widow, three children by his last wife, and children by his first wife (who died in Jonesboro a few years ago), Mrs. Laura Mitchell, Mrs. Effie King, Lulu Owen, Helen Owen, George Owen of Mineapolis, Minn., and Edward Owen.

12 Apr 1907:

Mat Hughes, formerly of Wolf Lake, died 9 Apr 1907, at Grand Tower, Jackson County.

James A. Matteson, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Wednesday last week (3 Apr 1907), aged 56 years.  He

left a widow and a son, Robert Matteson, who married in Jonesboro a few years ago Maude Alexander, a niece of Capt. A. Lence.

Mrs. William Rinehart died 4 Apr 1907, at home six miles south of Jonesboro, aged 54 years, and was

buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

John Barringer died 4 Apr 1907, aged 78 years, 4 months, 22 days, at home five miles east of Anna, and

was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born in Union County and married on 20 Mar 1851, Melbina Hileman.  He was a member of the Reformed Church 25 years, then transferred to Cumberland Presbyterian church.  He left a widow and eight grown children.

James W. Lowery died of stroke of apoplexy at home on Lincoln Street, Anna, aged 55 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was a member of the Baptist Church and lived in Anna more than 40 years.  He left a widow and two daughters by his first marriage, Mrs. Arch McElwee and Gertie Lowery, of Muskogee, Indian Territory.

J. Irvin Johnson was killed Sunday (7 Apr 1907) by being struck by a train at Highmoor Crossing north

of Anna, aged about 65 years.  He left a wife and four children.

19 Apr 1907:

Mrs. Clara Rhodes died 14 Apr 1907, of consumption at the home of her mother, Mariah Rhodes, three

miles west of Jonesboro, aged 22 years.

Sherman Coleman committed suicide Monday (15 Apr 1907) by taking moriphine at Dongola aged 24

years.  He left a wife to whom he had been married about two months.  A family altercation and alcohol were said to be the cause.

26 Apr 1907:

Willis W. Corzine was struck by a switch engine of the M & O Railroad and killed at Murphysboro,

Jackson County, aged 45 years.  He was a section hand on the railroad and a brother of Sim Corzine, of Jonesboro.

Rachel Frick died 20 Apr 1907, at home in Jonesboro, aged 89 years, 1 month, 25 days, and was buried

in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at First Baptist Church, which she joined 60 years ago.  She was born in Union County, the daughter of Archibald Beggs, who lived near Dongola and was a veteran of the Mexican War.  She was the granddaughter of Alexander Beggs, a soldier of the Revolutionary War.  They came from Kentucky.  She married on 2 Jul 1835, Caleb Frick, who died 17 May 1860, aged 60 years.  She had seven children, of whom two are living, Henry Frick, of Cobden, and Lou F. Watkins, her only daughter, of Jonesboro.  She also left 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  Among her deceased children were Dr. Thomas Frick, who died 10 Dec 1870, aged 27 years, and Jackson Frick, who died several years ago, aged 32 years.  Both Thomas and Jackson left two sons who lived in California or the Pacific Coast.  Thomas J. Glasscock, of Jonesboro, and Homer Watkins, of Texas, were sons of Lou Watkins. 

3 May 1907:

Peter Greer, “one of the best colored men in Jackson County,” died 18 Apr 1907, at home near

Halidaysboro, aged 75 years.

10 May 1907:

Annie G. Cain died 7 May 1907, of consumption, at home in Jonesboro, aged 31 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was the widow of Newton Cain, who died a year or more ago.  She left a son aged several years old.

17 May 1907:

Martha Butler Ede, wife of Capt. Henry Ede, died Tuesday (14 May 1907) at her home in Cobden, aged

74 years.

24 May 1907:

Richard Trevor died recently at home in Marion, Williamson County.  He was a traveling dry goods

salesman.

31 May 1907:

Rev. Levi Davis died Tuesday (28 May 1907) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.H. Beans, near

Saratoga, aged 87 years.  He was born in Union County and married Henrietta Casper.  He was the pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church 60 years and attended the first presbyter in Illinois at Shawneetown, Gallatin County, in 1840.  His funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Anna.  His children were Mrs. M.H. Beans, Mrs. J.N. Green, Will Davis, and Isaac Davis, of Union County, and James C. Davis, of Carterville, Williamson County.

7 Jun 1907:

Mrs. Kittie Lingle died 5 Jun 1907, of consumption, at home on West Market Street, Jonesboro, aged 32

years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She married on 8 Aug 1894, James Lingle.  She was a member of the Baptist Church.  She left a husband, a 12-year-old son, a 10-year-old daughter, a sister, Mrs. Nate Finch, of Cairo, Alexander County; and a brother, George Burk, of Unity, Alexander County.  (See also 14 Jun 1907, issue.)

Sabina Tinsley Millen Wright died 28 May 1907, at her son’s home in Boise, Idaho.  She was born on

the homestead near Jonesboro on 10 Dec 1837, the daughter of Isaac and Nancy J. Tinsley.  She married on 2 Jul 1857, John R. Millen.  They had three children, a son who died in infancy; Mary Millen Nichols, who died 21 May 1903; and a son, Charles A. Millen, of Jonesboro.  She married on 6 Nov 1867, Robert P. Wright.  They had one child, Isaac W. Wright, of 1142 E. Bannock St., Boise, Idaho.  She joined the Episcopal Church, then the Methodist Episcopal Church.

S.A.B. Davie died 5 Jun 1907, in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was born 25 Mar 1825, in

Tennessee, and married on 5 May 1853, Margaret C. Bennett.  They had six children, of whom three were living, Edgar A. Davie, of Anna; Charles W. Davie, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. George H. Galvin, of Moberly, Mo.  Grace Galvin and George L. Galvin were grandchildren.  He was a member of Capt Hacker’s Company, 1^st Volunteers during the Mexican War.  (See also 14 Jun 1907, issue.)

14 Jun 1907:

Mrs. Mary Carmichael died 5 Jun 1907, at home in St. Louis, aged about 60 years.  She was a sister of

the late Dr. W.C. Lence and a half sister of Aaron Lence of the northeast part of the county.

James L. Brown died 10 Jun 1907, of consumption, at home three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 73

years, 5 months, 17 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He left two sons.

Cora Agnes “Daisy” Otrich died 8 Jun 1907, at home of her mother, Martha A. Otrich, aged 21 years,

and was buried in Big Creek Cemetery.  She was the daughter of G.W. and Martha Otrich.

21 Jun 1907:

Clyde Page, brother of Mrs. Minnie Barbro, was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Mrs. Gertrude Riley died last Friday (14 Jun 1907) of consumption at her home in El Reno, Okla., aged

about 40 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.  She was the daughter of James Bell, of Cobden.

William “Lem” Stokes, of Union County, was killed Thursday night (19 Jun 1907) in Johnson County by

Sam Martin hitting him with a grubbing hoe and clevis.  They passed in the road and began fighting.  He was found guilty of manslaughter (6 Sep 1907, issue).

William Brooks died at home on Jefferson Street, Anna, aged 58 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  His funeral was at the Baptist church.  He left a wife, two daughters, and three sons.

28 Jun 1907:

Thomas M. Logan dropped dead Wednesday (26 Jun 1907) at home in Murphysboro, Jackson County,

aged 80 years.  He was a brother of Gen. John A. Logan.

Charles Caldwell committed suicide Saturday (22 Jun 1907) by throwing himself in front of street car

No. 10 in Anna, aged 33 years.  He was a patient at the hospital in Anna and was unmarried.  He was from Fayette County and his body was shipped to Vandalia for burial.

Lowell Milam Johnson died 22 Jun 1907, of inflammation of the stomach after eating green apples, aged

10 years, was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery.  He was the son of Leonard Johnson.  His brother died 10 months ago.  The funeral was at the Baptist Church.

5 Jul 1907:

Nora Gillibrand Eastman, wife of H.G. Eastman, died 30 Jun 1907, of tuberculosis, at home southeast

of Anna, aged 38 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Gladys Ruth Eberly, daughter of the Rev. S.G. Eberly, died Tuesday (2 Jul 1907), aged 1 year, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the United Evangelical Church.

12 Jul 1907:

Mrs. Elizabeth Marks, formerly of Anna, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John L. Messamore, in

St. Louis, aged 81 years.  She was the wife of Col. Samuel B. Marks.  She also left five sons and one daughter.  She was the grandmother of Mrs. H.C. Sifford, Mrs. Dick Robinson, and Miss Helen Marks, of Anna.

E.R. Wheeler died Wednesday (10 Jul 1907) at the home of his son, Thomas Wheeler, on Lime Kiln

Road and was buried at Stonefort.  He was born 28 Apr 1825, in North Carolina.  He left seven sons and one daughter, of whom the daughter and two sons live in Anna.

19 Jul 1907:

Sarah Jane Jenkins died Monday (15 Jul 1907) near Balcom, aged 52 years, and was buried in St. John’s

Cemetery.  She was the wife of William Jenkins.

Mother of A.A. Fasig died in Kansas.

Dr. W.W. Robinson, formerly of Anna, died last Friday (12 Jul 1907) at home in Loveland, Colo. 

During a severe asthma attack he experimented with an injection of an antitoxin after which he turned black and fell over dead.  He left a wife, Pearl (Mackey) Robinson and one child.  His father-in-law, J.M. Mackey lived north of Anna.

George Hileman, of Mill Creek, was found dead Monday (15 Jul 1907) in a fence row six days after he

disappeared from home.  He was mentally unbalanced and the family feared he had committed suicide.

26 Jul 1907:

Richard Shinnick, formerly of Anna, died 18 Jul 1907, of asthma, at his home in St. Louis.  He married

Mary Sublett in Anna.  He also left a son.

James W. Batson died Monday (22 Jul 1907) of cancer on his face, at his home west of Jonesboro, aged

73 years, 8 months, 4 days, and was buried in Tripp Cemetery.  He was born in Tennessee, but spent most of his life in Union County.  Since 1844 he lived on the farm where he died.  He left a widow, six sons, and two daughters.

Dr. David R. Sanders died 22 Jul 1907, of stomach affection, at home at the hospital annex in Anna, aged

62 years, 11 months, 26 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  His funeral was at First Baptist Church in Anna, of which he was a member.  He was a member of the Jonesboro Masonic lodge and the G.A.R.  He was born in Benton Co., Tenn., and his ancestors were prominent in the Revolutionary War.  He was educated in Williamson County.  At age 18 he enlisted in 1862 in Co. E, 81^st Infantry and became 2^nd Lieutenant.  He was a farmer and school teacher after the war.  He was a Republican.  In 1872 he studied medicine with Dr. F.M. Agnew at Makanda and graduated in 1877 from Cincinnati College.  He moved to Jonesboro in 1886 and was pastor of First Baptist Church in Jonesboro.  He married Delphina E. Gallegly, who died in 1875, leaving a daughter, Mrs. Minnie E. Armstrong, of Texarkana, Ark.  He married 2^nd Lydia E. Rauch, who survives with five children, Karl Sander, Mrs. Ora Anderson, of Jonesboro, Mrs. Mary Henson, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Miss Clyde Sanders, and Miss Gussie Sanders.

Patrick Doud, a policeman in Cairo, Alexander County, was killed by Marvin Boren, who was acquitted

of the murder.

Grandma Pirtle died the first of the week and was buried Wednesday (24 Jul 1907) in Alto Pass

Cemetery.

2 Aug 1907:

Ed Williams, a fireman for the M & O Railroad was killed in a train wreck Wednesday (31 Jul 1907) two

miles below Jonesboro at Whitehouse.  He was from Memphis, Tenn., aged 23 years, and left a widowed mother.

9 Aug 1907:

Louisa L. “Lou” Reese, daughter of Capt. J.P. Reese, of Cobden, died Saturday (3 Aug 1907) at the home

of Joe James, aged about 40 years, and was buried in Reese Cemetery on her father’s farm.  Her funeral was at the home of her sister, Mrs. George W. James, Jr.  Mrs. Otis Miller, of Jonesboro, was also a sister.  She also left brothers living in the West.  She was a teacher in Union County.

J.G. Biechle was found in the Mississippi River near Hamburg Landing Thursday last week (1 Aug

1907).  He was a ferryman at Grand Tower, Jackson County.  His skiff wrecked crossing the river with passengers on Sunday (28 Jul 1907).  After the coroner’s inquest, his body was towed to Cape Girardeau without removing it from the water.

Henry Anderson died Saturday (3 Aug 1907) at St. Andrews Hospital in Murphysboro, Jackson County,

aged 42 years, 9 months, and was buried in Murphysboro.  He was born and raised in Jonesboro, the oldest son of B.H. Anderson.  He was a brakeman, conductor, and yardmaster on the railroad and was over 6 feet tall.  Other members of his family included Mrs. Will Anderson and Fannie nee Anderson (Mrs. Frank) Terpinitz.

16 Aug 1907:

Sadie Hoar died Friday (9 Aug 1907) at the home of her father, Rev. B.A. Hoar, of typhoid fever, aged

20 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church.

George Kennedy, Sr., died recently at Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged 86 years.  He was the only

surviving charter member of Amity Lodge I.O.O.F. and was a charter member of the Lutheran church in Murphysboro.  He was a justice of the peace over 40 years and married 856 couples.  He left several children.

23 Aug 1907:

C.C. Balance died last Sunday (18 Aug 1907) at home in the northwest part of the county, aged about 60

years.  He left a widow.  He had intended to move to Wetaug, Pulaski County, and had just sold his personal property.

Paul Howard Cluster, infant son of Noah R. and Jennie Tibbets Cluster, of 1223 So. 6^th Street, St. Louis,

died Thursday (22 Aug 1907) at St. Louis, aged 17 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He fell out a window of the attic where his mother was hanging the wash.  She just missed catching him and she said he laughed and cooed as he fell.

A. Gus Glasco died 21 Aug 1907, at St. Louis, following surgery for appendicitis, aged 33 years, 3

months, 10 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was the son of Mary Grear Wiley, the first wife of W.W. Wiley, of Anna, and a grandson of Rebecca Grear.  He left a wife and a 17-month-old daughter.  His father-in-law arrived from Muskogee, Indian Territory, for the funeral.

Mrs. Levi Brown died Sunday (18 Aug 1907) at home east of Anna, aged 44 years, and was buried in

Trinity Cemetery.  She left a husband and seven children.  She was the sister of Wade Medlin and Thomas Medlin, of Anna.

Addie Shick, wife of Thomas Shick, died Monday (19 Aug 1907), aged 39 years, and was buried near

her sister in Chicago. She was the daughter of Dr. S.C. Ives, formerly of Anna.

30 Aug 1907:

Annie (Booth) Settlemoire, wife of E.M. Settlemoir, died Tuesday (27 Aug 1907) at a St. Louis hospital

following surgery, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

6 Sep 1907:

George Vancil was found dead Saturday (31 Aug 1907) at his farm at Water Valley.  He died of neuralgia

of the heart.

Fred Holland died Sunday (1 Sep 1907) at home in Marion, Williamson County from injuries received

in a free-for-all fight at the fairgrounds last Friday (30 Aug 1907).

20 Sep 1907:

Mrs. E.E. McLaughlin died last Saturday (14 Sep 1907) of typhoid fever, in Murphysboro, Jackson

County.  Her husband was the former superintendent of school in Anna.

Mrs. A.W. Boswer died last Saturday (14 Sep 1907) at home in Murphysboro, Jackson County.  She was

born and raised near Mt. Pleasant and was the aunt of Mrs. John Toler, of Anna.

27 Sep 1907:

Infant of Charles Millen died Tuesday (24 Sep 1907) aged 11 months, and was buried in Morgan

Cemetery.

Mrs. Zach H. Corzine died 24 Sep 1907, at home five miles west of Jonesboro, aged 76 years, 4 months,

10 days, and was buried in Morgan Cemetery.  She had no children.

William Kratzinger died 24 Sep 1907, at home at Cave Spring, Anna, and was buried in Jonesboro.  He

was born 17 Dec 1832, in Darmstadt, Germany, and came to the U.S. in 1847 with his father and sister.  They settled in Chicago.  He worked on the Illinois Central railroad in 1851 as a messenger until the road was completed in 1855, then he became conductor on the southern division.  In 1863 he quit railroading and began farming and dairy farming.  In 1855 he married Mary C. Condon, who died in 1873.  They had four children, Augusta, Richard, Harry, and Mamie (Mrs. Frank Lingle of Rossland, British Columbia), all married and living.  In 1878 he married Katie Griffin and they had one child, Elsie Kratzinger.  He was a member of the I.O.O.F.

4 Oct 1907:

Ethel Woodworth, daughter of E.D. Woodworth, formerly of Dongola, died Wednesday (2 Oct 1907) of

consumption, at the home of her sister, Mrs. A. Ney Sessions, in Anna, aged 20 years.  She left a father, three brothers, and one sister.

R.F. Cullom, an old citizen of Mill Creek, died Thursday (3 Oct 1907).

Grandson of Dr. M.A. Guner, of Ware, died the first of the week in Illmo, Mo., and was buried Tuesday

(31 Sep 1907) in Anna Cemetery.

F.S. “Burly” Albright died at Humboldt, Tenn., after swallowing a chicken bone, which caused him to

bleed to death internally, aged 60 years.  He never married and left Jonesboro many years ago.  He was a brother of Wesley Albright, of Humboldt, Tenn., and Mrs. Enoch Wishart and James Albright, both of Fort Worth, Texas.  (See also 23 Aug 1907, issue.)

Sarah M. Brown died 1 Oct 1907, of typhoid fever, at the home of her father, County Treasurer James

D.R. Brown, west of Jonesboro, aged 18 years, 15 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was a pupil at Jonesboro High School and attended Jonesboro Baptist church.  (See also 25 Oct 1907, issue.)  Two brothers were also sick with typhoid fever.

Malinda Craver died 3 Oct 1907, at home on South Main Street, Jonesboro, aged 79 years, 3 months, 10

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was the daughter of Michael and Susannah Craver, who came from North Carolina in 1827.  She was born in Jonesboro and never married.  James Craver, deceased, was her brother.  She left one sister, Mrs. Annie Hileman.  J.L. Ury was her nephew.  She was a member of the Baptist Church for 50 years or more.  (See also 11 Oct 1907, issue.)

11 Oct 1907:

Ellis Wright died Saturday (5 Oct 1907) at Ava, aged 98 years.  He was the uncle of Mrs. Samuel Knupp

and Mrs. Mike Cleary.

Charles Hilig died Monday (7 Oct 1907) at home in Mill Creek.  He was the son of M.N. Hilig and left a

family.

J.B. Miller died 2 Oct 1907, at home south of Anna, aged 80 years.  He had a jewelry business with John

Grear in Jonesboro and acted as editor of the Gazette.  He was a farmer the past 40 years and originator of the Sucker State strawberry.  He never married.  He left one brother, C.W. Miller, of Oklahoma, and a sister, Mrs. James Plater, of Bentonville, Ark.  He left $3,000 to Union Academy for the education of students from Hess Precinct where he lived with his nephew, John R. Miller.

18 Oct 1907:

John H. Hileman died Monday (14 Oct 1907) at home near Campground, aged about 60 years, and was

buried in Campground Cemetery.  He served in the 156^th and the 46^th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War and was a member of the G.A.R.

25 Oct 1907:

Julia Florence Hargrave, wife of Edward F. Hargrave, died 23 Oct 1907, at home in Jonesboro, aged 52

years, 9 months, 13 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Baptist church to which she was a member.  She also left two sons, Jean Hargrave and Ed Hargrave; three daughters, Mrs. Ed Selden, of East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Mrs. Cliff Menees, of Louisiana, and Mabel Hargrave; and one brother, George M. Hunsaker.

Mrs. I.N. Elkins died and her funeral was Friday (25 Oct 1907) at Vienna, Johnson County.  She was the

mother of Lester Elkins, a high school student at Anna.

Linna Tefertillar was accidentally shot with a shotgun Sunday (11 Oct 1907) by her 16-year-old half

brother, Earl Huffine, and died Monday (21 Oct 1907), aged 13 years,  and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was shot while her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Monroe Tefertillar, were at church.

1 Nov 1907:

Laura DeWitt English, wife of C.C. English, died 25 Oct 1907, of diabetes, at home in Anna, aged 54

years, 7 months, 23 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She was born south of Jonesboro and was a sister of Mrs. Eli Douglas and Mrs. Henry Douglas.  She was a member of the Lutheran church in Anna.  She left a daughter, Mrs. T.P. Sifford, of Anna.

Mrs. George Vick, of Ullin, Pulaski County, died Saturday (26 Oct 1907) at Hale Sanitarium in Anna,

and was buried in Ullin Cemetery.  She was formerly of Anna.  Bessie Vick, a daughter, was with her when she died.  She left a husband, sister, four daughters, and two sons.

8 Nov 1907:

Mrs. America Lucelle Wilcox died Friday (1 Nov 1907) at her home in Anna, aged 77 years, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  She was born June 1830 in Hopkinsville, Ky., and married on 28 Mar 1857, L.P. Wilcox.  She lived in Anna almost 50 years and was a member of the Presbyterian church.  She left two children, Addie Thorne and Lorenzo P. Wilcox, of Chicago. 

Hamer H. Green died Sunday (3 Nov 1907) at Bloomington, aged 63 years.  He was a Mason and the son

of a Methodist minister who was stationed in Jonesboro over 35 years ago.

Infant child of Lee Ferguson, of Jonesboro, died Monday (4 Nov 1907)

Lis Kelley, of near Reynoldsville, died Wednesday (6 Nov 1907).  He left five children.  His wife died a

year ago.

James Davie, the youngest son of Samuel F. Davie, was accidentally shot Sunday (3 Nov 1907) while

hunting in the bottoms, by 18-year-old Robert Mangold and died Monday (4 Nov 1907), aged 16 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. His funeral was at the home of his grandfather, D.S. Davie, in Jonesboro.

15 Nov 1907:

Henry Boyers, of Centralia, was run over and killed Saturday (9 Nov 1907) by an Illinois Central train in

Makanda.

22 Nov 1907:

Dr. W.W. Essick was run over and killed last Friday (15 Nov 1907) by a switch engine in Murphysboro,

Jackson County, aged 54 years.  He was a prominent physician in Musphysboro.

29 Nov 1907:

James Mays died Saturday (23 Nov 1907) of paralysis, at the home of his only brother, John Mays, in

Murphysboro, Jackson County, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He lived with his sister, Mrs. Jacob Carraker.  He left four sisters, Mrs. Jacob Carraker, of Anna, Mrs. M.L. Rich, of Cobden, Mrs. Ed Brandon, of Murphysboro, Jackson County, and Mrs. William Walter, of east of Anna.

Cornelius Pelley died Tuesday (26 Nov 1907) from injuries sustained at Swan Creek rock crusher, while

being carried into Hale Sanitarium in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  He left a wife, three daughters, a son, four brothers, Patrick Pelley and Thomas Pelley, of Anna, Joseph Pelley, of Illmo, Mo., and John Pelley, of Clarksdale, Miss.; four sisters, Mrs. John Coffman, of Cairo, Alexander County, Mrs. Clocky, of St. Louis, Mrs. T.O. Garrett, of Carbondale, Jackson County, and Annie Pelley, of Anna.

Jacob W. Carraker died 27 Nov 1907, at home on Cobden Street, Anna, aged 59 years, 9 months, 17

days, and was buried in Carraker Cemetery four miles from Anna.  He left a widow and a son.

Walter N. Moreland died Tuesday (26 Nov 1907) in Cairo, Alexander County, aged 26 years, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.  He was a member of the K of P.  He was the only child of J.T. Moreland, of Cairo. He left an invalid wife. 

Mrs. S.R. Green died last Friday (22 Nov 1907) of heart disease, at home in Cobden.  She was the

daughter of the late Charles Crowell.

Gen. James Stewart Martin died 20 Nov 1907, at Salem, Marion County, aged 82 years.  He was born in

Virginia and moved to Marion County in 1844.  He was a veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War.

6 Dec 1907:

Congressman George W. Smith died recently.  His funeral was at Murphysboro, Jackson County.  He

was a Mason.

Edith Moreland died Tuesday (3 Dec 1907) at Cairo, Alexander County.  She married Walter Moreland

in April 1906.  She was an invalid 15 months.

Samuel M. Wright died 4 Dec 1907, of dropsy, at the home of his sister, Edith (Mrs. Samuel) Knupp, in

Jonesboro, aged 44 years, 9 months, 1 day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He left a wife, one son, two sisters, and one brother.  (See also 13 Dec 1907, issue.)

Oscar Eddleman was run over and killed by a train Thursday last week (28 Nov 1907) near Ullin, Pulaski

County.  He stepped from one track to avoid a train and was struck by another train.

13 Dec 1907:

Charles Blevins, of Makanda was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Infant of Herbert Rendleman, of south of Alto Pass, died 10 Dec 1907, and was buried in Alto Pass

Cemetery.  An older child was also sick.

Anna M. Chester died Sunday (8 Dec 1907) of consumption, at the home of Mrs. Josie Cover in East St.

Louis, St. Clair County, aged 37 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.  She formerly lived with the family of Dr. Eddleman.  The funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal church.

Mrs. William McClusky died Wednesday (11 Dec 1907) of la grippe and pneumonia, at Memorial Hall,

the home of her son, Fred McClusky, and was buried at her former home in New York.  She was born and raised in New York.  She left a husband and two children, Fred McClusky, the principal at Union Academy, and a daughter who is a missionary in China.

Robert D. Stapleton died Saturday (7 Dec 1907) at St. Louis of cystitis following surgery, and was buried

in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County.  His funeral was at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cairo, Alexander County.

Judge F.M. Youngblood died Wednesday (11 Dec 1907) at home in Carbondale, Jackson County.

20 Dec 1907:

R.B. Sowers died 2 Dec 1907, at home two miles west of Jonesboro, aged 77 years, 18 days.  He was

born 14 Nov 1830, in Rowan Co., N.C., and moved to Pulaski County when 9 years old.  He married on 22 Jul 1852, Catherine Rendleman, of Jonesboro.  She died three years ago.  They had 12 children, of whom eight were living.  He was a Civil War veteran and served in the 81^st Illinois Infantry.  He was in Andersonville Prison six months.—Wetaug correspondent, Cairo Citizen.

Hannah Liller, wife of George Liller, died at home in Anna, aged 37 years, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery.  Her funeral was at the Evangelical church.  She was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. C.F. Mathias.  She left a husband and two daughters.

Mrs. A.H. Steele, of Cairo, Alexander County, died.  She left no heirs, but an estate worth about $5,000.

Richard C. Nash died Thursday (19 Dec 1907) at home in Jonesboro, aged 73 years.  He was a Civil War

veteran in the 118^th Illinois Infantry and a member of the G.A.R. He was born in North Carolina and came to Union County about 50 years ago.  He left two daughters, Mrs. John Crowell, of Jonesboro, and Mrs. L.A. Peeler, of Anna.

27 Dec 1907:

Clarence D. Brown died 21 Dec 1907, of typhoid fever and pneumonia, aged 20 years, 27 days, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.  He was the oldest son of J. D. R. Brown, of two miles west of Jonesboro.

3 Jan 1908:

Infant daughter of Will Dishon died last Sunday (29 Dec 1907) and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

H.C. Armstrong was accidentally shot and killed while hunting Tuesday (31 Dec 1907) at Texarkana,

Ark., and was buried at Fort Smith, Ark.  He was crossing a fence when his shotgun discharged into his neck.  His two oldest sons were with him.  His wife was Dr. Minnie Sanders, the oldest daughter of D.R. Sanders. Miss Clyde Sanders was his sister-in-law.  He also left four children.
