4 Jan 1896: Ned N. Spann died 28 Dec 1895, at the home of his father, S.H. Spann, aged 3 years, 10 months, 6 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was born in Jonesboro and was a member of the Congregational Church. E. Lameson was killed by Charles A. Johnson Sunday before last (15 Dec 1895) in Alto Pass. Johnson had lived in Anna and Jonesboro, was a pensioner, and was at large in Missouri. (See also 14 Nov 1896, issue.) Johnson was acquitted because the jury believed it was self defense (21 Nov 1896, issue). Mary D. Jones, wife of Wesley Jones of Price, Mo., died last Tuesday (17 Dec 1895), aged 67 years. C.H. Jones, who was married to a daughter of G.S. Bouton, was her son. The obituary was copied from the Clavton (Missouri) Watchman, 20 Dec 1895. John Baggot was shot and killed 21 Dec 1895, southeast of Carbondale, Jackson County, by John Kerr. He left a wife and six children. Kerr had a wife and four children. His widow, Millie Baggott, gave birth to a new baby in March 1896 (21 Mar 1896, issue). R. Lynn Minton died 11 Jan 1896, from wounds received in a fight with James T. Moreland at the office of the Anna Talk on 20 Dec 1895, aged 29 years, 10 months, 29 days, and was buried in Carlinville, Ill.. He was the fourth son of the Rev. Dr. Robert Minton. He was born in Carlinville and was publisher of the Talk since 1888. He left a mother of Carlinville; three brothers, the Rev. W.B. Minton of the Presbyterian Church in Anna, Dr. E.W. Minton of Oakland, Neb., Hugh M. Minton county surveyor of Macoupin County, of Carlinville; and one sister, Mrs. Newton Gray of Elmhurst, Calif. (See also 18 Jan 1896, and 25 Jan 1896, issues.) Moreland was charged with the murder, but was acquitted (27 Mar 1897, and 3 Apr 1897, issues.) Osborne Besse died 19 Dec 1895, on the David Rushing farm south of Anna. He left a brother. Mrs. Miranda W. Rice died 23 Dec 1895, at her home two miles northeast of Cobden, aged 81 years, 10 months, 19 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Mabel Cleo Gunther, infant daughter of J.S. Gunther died 28 Dec 1895, aged 17 months, 26 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. 11 Jan 1896: S.H. Spann died 2 Jan 1896, aged 84 years, 4 months, 29 days. He was born in North Carolina and was the last survivor of a family of 13 children. In 1851 he came to Union County and settled in Jonesboro. He lived there 20 years and in 1875 moved to Alto Pass. He was married four times and had 15 children, of whom seven survived him: W.A. Spann of Vienna, Johnson County, Dr. C.P. Spann of Thebes, Alexander County, Silas P. Spann of Alto Pass, Ernest Spann of Sutherland, Calif., Mrs. Martin of Alto Pass, Mrs. Delia Sams of Anna, and Mrs. Willis Rendleman of Alto Pass. The late John H. Spann was his son. He also left 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and joined the Congregational Church in 1885. He was a Mason. (See also the 11 Jan 1896, 18 Jan 1896, and 8 May 1897, issues.) French Jones died in the penitentiary last night (6 Jan 1896) and was buried in Santa Fe, Alexander County. The notice was taken from the Cairo People of 7 Jan 1896. Charles Brown was murdered 5 Jan 1896 by Charles Dixon (or Henry Dickson) in jail in Cairo, Alexander County. He was cut with a knife because he refused to help murder the jailer, Alf Brown, and escape. Dixon was sentenced to 30 years in the penitentiary for manslaughter. (See also 18 Jan 1896, and 29 Feb 1896, issues.) Kate Lorena Mull, second daughter of Eli Mull, died 3 Jan 1896, aged 5 years, 8 months, 20 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Mastin Davis died 3 Jan 1896, at Moscow. He was an old soldier and left a son and several daughters. The father and sister of G.J. Sexauer died “in the old country.” He received $3,000 inheritance. He came to the U.S. 22 years ago. He has one brother in St. Louis. 18 Jan 1896: John Kollehner died 13 Jan 1896, at his home two and a half miles south of Jonesboro of pneumonia and la grippe, aged 46 years, 7 months, 1 day, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery. He left a brother, Joseph Kollehner; a sister, Mrs. John Ransmeier; and an aged mother. The Rev. James A. Durham, a Bapstist preacher, died 11 Jan 1896, at his home in Benton, Franklin County, of paralysis, aged 57 years. He was a relative of the Rev. A. Durham, deceased, a Baptist preacher in Jonesboro. John “Johnny” Smith died 9 Jan 1896, at his home on Hudgens Creek, aged about 104 years, and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery. He was born about 1792 in North Carolina. He left a son, Wiley Smith, and a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Lindsey. He came from Cabarrus Co., N.C., in 1814 and settled south of Jonesboro, and then later moved to Hudgens Creek. Another obituary states he came to Union County in 1817 or 1818 and settled at Hudgens Creek. “He remembered seeing Indians when he first came to this state.” In 1877 he joined the Christian Church. He married three times and had 10 children, of whom two survived. Rita “Rittie” Smith, widow of George Smith and sister-in-law of Johnny Smith, died 2 Jan 1896, aged 91 years, 5 days. She was born 27 Dec 1804, in Rowan Co., N.C., and came to Union County with her parents in 1820 and settled on Hudgens Creek. Her husband died 44 years ago and she lived with her son, Charles Smith, on the old home place in the northern part of the county. She had nine sons and four daughters, of whom five children survived her, Adam Smith, David Smith, Alexander Smith, Andrew Smith, and Charles Smith. She also left 45 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren. In 1864 she joined Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church Myrtle Trout, daughter of A.L. Trout, died 11 Jan 1896, of pneumonia, on the D.W. Brown farm north of Anna, aged 11 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Her brother, Joshua Trout, aged 8 years, was sick. 25 Jan 1896: Mildred Washington Lawrence, life companion of T. Lawrence, died 17 Jan 1896, aged 57 years, 11 months, and 19 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She was born 28 Jan, 1838, in North Garden, Virginia, the daughter of Shepherd and Sarah Eads. At the age of 7 she came to Union County and on 27 Apr 1854, married T. Lawrence. They moved to Missouri during the Civil War when her husband was a surgeon in the Union Army. In 1865 they moved to Alexander County and in 1875 to Union County. She had eight children, of whom two sonsdied in infancy, an only daughter in childhood, and five sons survived her, George T. Lawrence of Jonesboro Ark., Joseph McDowell Lawrene of Willard, Samuel S.E. Lawrence of Columbia, Arthur W. Lawrence of Mill Creek, and Albert S.J. Lawrence of Ava. She also had 15 grandchildren, of whom 12 survived her. She also left a brother and a sister. John Roach of Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head last Sunday (19 Jan 1896). He was unmarried and left two brothers at Villa Ridge and a sister in Cairo, Alexander County. Mary Cripps, widow of Peter Cripps who died several years ago, died Tuesday (21 Jan 1896) at her home near Pomona, Jackson County. Infant child of W.N. Butler of Cairo died of burns, aged 1 month, 19 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery last Friday (17 Jan 1896). 1 Feb 1896: Jeanetta Mull, daughter of Eli Mull, died 29 Jan 1896, aged 8 years, 1 month, 17 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Jefferson Lingle died 25 Jan 1896, at his home two miles west of Alto Pass, of pneumonia, aged 63 years. He was the son of the late, Paul Lingle and was a veteran of the Civil War. He married 1st Miss Barringer and 2nd a daughter of N.B. Collins. He left a large family of children. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Harriet (Abernathie) Keith died 26 Jan 1896, at the home of her son, J.M. Keith, aged 69 years, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. She married George Keith who died about 30 years ago. She had four children, of whom two survived her. She joined the Bapist Church about 30 years ago. Harry Brown, son of Samuel Brown, died Tuesday (28 Jan 1896) near Pomona, Jackson County, of consumption, and was buried in Jerusalem Cemetery. Samuel was over age 70 years. W.H. Boyer died 23 Jan 1896, at his home in Cairo, Alexander County, and was buried at his old home in Harrisburg. He was a lawyer and left a widow and two children. Lucy Hooper died 29 Jan 1896, at her home in Anna, aged 68 years, 1 month, 4 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 8 Feb 1896: Hattie L. Black, wife of George M. Black, died 3 Feb 1896, at Limestone of pneumonia, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery. She left a husband and four children. One daughter died in October 1895. She was a sister to Walter Lamer and the late Willis Lamer. Ida Misenhimer died 5 Feb 1896, of pneumonia and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born 23 Nov 1860, the only child of Henry and Martha Douglas. She married in December 1886 Henry J.L. Misenhimer. They lived 10 miles southwest of Jonesboro in the Mississippi Bottoms. She left a husband and five children, of whom her husband and two children were very ill with pneumonia. One child died 1 Feb 1896, aged 5 days. Henry J.L. “Jeff” Misenhimer died 9 Feb 1896, aged 38 years, 1 month, 3 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside his wife and child. He was born 2 Jan 1858, in Union County, the second son of Alfred and Ann Elizabeth Misenhimer. He married Ida Douglas in December 1886. Onartha J. Fulenwider died 3 Feb 1896, aged 29 yearsm 5 months, 14 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She was born 19 Apr 1866, in Union County, the daughter of William and Mary Humphreys, and her father died when she was 9. She married A.A. Fulenwider on 7 Dec 1884. She left a mother, sister, Mrs. Henry Miller, a half brother, and a husband. Willis Sanders and Frank Thompson shot and killed each other last Saturday (1 Feb 1896) in Johnston City, Williamson County. They were fighting over Sanders’s wife. Sheridan Bowling died 1 Feb 1896, of typhoid fever at the home of A.V. Hess south of Anna, aged 25 years, and was buried in Eldorado. She left a brother, Dr. J.W. Bowling of Omaha, Ill. Child of Marshall Miller died last Tuesday (4 Feb 1896) in Cobden. Andrew J. Hightower died 31 Jan 1896, aged 51 years, 16 days. He was a Mason. 15 Feb 1896: Lucinda Brown, wife of Oliver C. Brown, died 11 Feb 1896, aged 61 years, 5 months, 27 days. She was born 14 Aug 1834 in Union County, the daughter of David Sumner. She joined Jonesboro Baptist Church in 1859. She had one son and two daughters, of whom two were living, J.C. Brown of Hodges Park, Alexander County, and Mrs. J.L. Leyerly of east of Anna. The other daughter, Mrs. John W. Day, died in Mississippi and was a sister-in-law of Sheriff George Day. She also left one brother of Cobden and two sisters, one of Washington State and the other of Cobden. Felix Armstrong, baggageman, William “Old Bill” Huntington, engineer, Curt Adams, Gus Anderson, and J.L. McLean, firemen, were killed in a head-on Illinois Central train collision last Tuesday (11 Feb 1896) a half a mile south of Dongola. Curt Adams was a brother of Mrs. W.F. Chapman, living on the J.B. Roberts farm and Gus Anderson was formerly of Makanda. Mr. Rice “colored” died near black slough bridge in Johnson County. Before he died he allegedly confessed to murdering a white trapper there and to murdering, eight to 10 years ago, a black man in Metropolis, Massac County, where he formerly lived. Sarah A. Cann, wife of John Cann, died 9 Feb 1896, at her home in Anna, aged 60 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 22 Feb 1896: Mary Elizabth (Sanders) Williford died 18 Feb 1896, in Jonesboro, of cancer of the stomach, aged 68 years, 6 months, 1 day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born 17 Aug 1827, and married on 18 Jul 1844, near Murfreesboro, Tenn., Claiborne H. Williford. She came to Jonesboro in April 1846. She had 11 children, of whom two were dead, Charles Williford and a daughter who died in infancy. She left a husband and nine children: John F. Williford of Anna, Sarah wife of Will Walker, Samuel Williford of Lebanon, Indian Territory, Frances A. wife of Charles F. Willard, Henry Williford, Helen M. Williford, William Williford, Everett Williford of San Antonio, Texas, and Emmett Williford. She also left 39 grandchildren. Robert Vernon Hileman, son of L.D. and Fannie E. Hileman, died 18 Feb 1896, aged 1 year, 3 months, 13 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born 5 Nov 1894. Emma (Mrs. Robert) Bayley Robinson, formerly of Anna, died at her home in Ogden, Utah, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was a sister of Mrs. J.E. Lufkin and the mother of George Bell of Cobden. Rebecca St. John died 16 Feb 1896, at her home south of Anna of typhoid fever, aged 58 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. William Wiesel, brother of Mrs. John Duncan of Anna, died in St. Louis. Hannah More Tracey Cutler died 10 Feb 1896, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary T. Mott, in Ocean Springs, Miss., and was buried in the cemetery on Fort Bayou beside her son and daughter. She was born 25 Feb 1815, in Becket, Berkshire Co., Mass. She married the Rev. John M. Tracey in Geanga Co., Ohio, in 1834, but he died in 1843. They had three children. In 1852 she married Col. Samuel Cutler and moved to Dwight, Illinois. She lived in Cobden for 12 years where she practiced medicine. Two children, Mrs. Parker Earle and John M. Tracey, preceded her in death. 29 Feb 1896: W.T. Hood, of the eastern part of Union County, died last week. (See also 7 Mar 1896, issue.) Harrison A. Smith, of the northern part of Union County, died Wednesday this week (26 Feb 1896). Father of Fred L. McCullough of Jonesboro died at his home in Jacksonville. Dewitt C. “Dock” Dougherty, son of ex lieut.-gov. John Dougherty, died 26 Feb 1896, at his home in Jonesboro, aged 60 years, 11 months, 19 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He married 1st Nellie Bell of Cincinnati, Ohio, who died 25 years ago. He married 2nd Mrs. Delia Rixleben, widow of Charles Rixleben. They had one child. He left two brothers, Capt. John J. Dougherty, of San Antonio, Texas, and George M. Dougherty, of Cairo, Alexander County. Jackson Sifford, of two miles east of Cobden, died 26 Feb 1896, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Birdie Woods, daughter of J.N. Woods, of Anna, died Saturday (22 Feb 1896) of pneumonia, aged 4 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. William T. Alden died last Friday (21 Feb 1896) in Greenville, Miss., and was buried in Carbondale, Jackson County. He was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Sarah Richardson. 7 Mar 1896: Erwin Turner died Thursday (5 Mar 1896) and was buried in Lick Creek. M.J.P. Turner died at his home near Kaolin Wednesday (4 Mar 1896). Louis Carl Rich, son of George W. Rich, died 8 Mar 1896, at his home in Cobden, aged 3 months, 17 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 14 Mar 1896: Anna Adelia Cook, oldest daughter of A.V. Cook, died 11 Mar 1896, in Jonesboro of diphtheria, aged 5 years, 8 months, 13 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Thomas Richardson died 7 Mar 1896, in McClure, Alexander County, aged 35 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was the son-in-law of Martin Carter of Jonesboro and left a widow and two children. Patrick Burk died 7 Mar 1896. He was an old railroad section hand and helped lay the first ties and cut out the tunnel at Mountain Glen. He had four daughters and two sons, of whom two, Bridget and Mary, survived. He also left a granddaughter. He was Catholic. 21 Mar 1896: Infant daughter of John Herin of Cobden died 13 Mar 1896, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Deacon John Leeright died 14 Mar 1896, at his home three and a half miles northwest of Cobden, aged 48 years, 11 months, and 18 days. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. The wife of B.J. Tweedy died Tuesday (17 Mar 1896) in Alto Pass. She left a large family of small children. The Rev. John Rodman, pastor of the Red Bud Baptist Church, died there Tuesday (17 Mar 1896), aged 65 years. Bessie Turner, daughter of Perry B. Turner, died 16 Mar 1896, aged 1 year, 2 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Mrs. Katherine Richards, wife of Henry Richards living north of Stone Fort, died Friday (13 Mar 1896) of an impacted gallstone and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Elder Levi Gifford, formerly of Makanda, died in Creal Springs, Williamson County. He left children. 28 Mar 1896: Lula Sneed, wife of W.A. Sneed, formerly of Anna, died 23 Mar 1896, at her home in Mound City, Pulaski County, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. John Whalen, son of William and Lizzie Whalen, died 22 Mar 1896, aged 1 year, 6 months, 8 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Capt. I.M. Sperry died 21 Mar 1896, at the hospital in Anna, aged 70 years, and was buried in Cobden. He was a member of G.A.R. and had been a cavalry officer in the Civil War. He left a wife and a large family of children. Margaret Boswell, mother of Mrs. J.D. Reynolds of Anna, died in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County. William A. Campbell died 22 Mar 1896, of consumption at his home in Jonesboro, aged 58 yerars, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was a Civil War veteran. He left a widow and three children, Bertha Campbell, Orville Campbell, and Luke Campbell. Frank W. Coulter died 20 Mar 1896, at the home of his father two miles east of Cobden, aged 18 years, 5 months, 8 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 4 Apr 1896: Thomas H. Samson, brother of J.H. Samson of Jonesboro, died in Drakeville, Iowa, aged 81 years. He left another brother, age 68 years, of Michigan, and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Phillips, age 76 years, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Helen Snider, daughter of W.F. Snider was fatally burned Friday last week (27 Mar 1896). She was the granddaughter of Mrs. James Morgan. Mrs. Anna Barlow was fatally burned in Carbondale, Jackson County, Tuesday last week (24 Mar 1896), aged 73 years. John Gaunt, brother of Mrs. J.W. Roy, died in Grand Chain, Pulaski County. David Gow died 31 Mar 1896, at his home two miles east of Cobden, aged 70 years. He was born in Scotland. Mrs. J.K. Davis died 31 Mar 1896, at the home of Benjamin Tweedy, three miles north of Cobden, aged 70 years. 11 Apr 1896: Mary Zimmerman died 1 Apr 1896, 24 years less two months from the death of her husband. She was born 7 Sep 1827, in Jackson Co., Ala., and came to Illinois in 1833. One year later her father died. She was converted at a camp meeting near Vienna, Johnson County, in 1839. She married on 11 Mar 1847, Samuel Y. Zimmerman. They moved to their home farm in Jackson County in 1848. She was a member of Oak Grove M.E. Church. John S. Rendleman died 8 Apr 1896, at his home near Alto Pass, aged 84 years, 5 months, 12 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born 26 Oct 1811, in Rowan Co., N.C., and came to Union County in 1816 with his parents. He settled three miles northwest of Jonesboro. He was the last Union County veteran of the Black Hawk War. He married Margaret Hartline and had eight children, of whom four were living: Isaac Rendleman of Oregon, A.J. Rendleman, Mrs. J.J. Keith of Alto Pass, and Clara Mead of Cobden. He married Mrs. Elizabeth Donoven, who survived him. They had four living children: C.C. Rendleman, Josie Rendleman, and Emma Rendleman of Alto Pass, and Robert Rendleman of Hot Springs, Ark. (See also 18 Apr 1896, issue.) Henry Puffer died Sunday (5 Apr 1896) at his home in the south part of Anna of pneumonia, aged about 60 years. John Gattemeier died Saturday (4 Apr 1896) at his home five miles west of Jonesboro, aged 68 years, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery. He came from Germany in 1854. He never married, but left an unmarried sister who kept house for him and two nephews, sons of his sisters in Germany, who lived with him. Walter Diehlman fell from a train and was killed a half mile south of Anna, aged 7 tears. He left a father, Fred Diehlman, a mother and five siblings. They were going from Stuttgart, Ark., to Archibald, Ohio to live. Mrs. Harriet Davis died 31 Mar 1896, at the home of her son-in-law, B.J. Tweedy, aged about 70 years, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery. She raised a large family and was a widow for many years. 18 Apr 1896: Christopher Keller died 8 Apr 1896, aged 86 years, 1 month, 4 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born 4 Mar 1810, in North Carolina, and came to Union County in 1823. He married Nancy Lence in 1831. In 1836 he moved to the farm where he lived 60 years. He had eight children and left three daughters and two sons. Brother of S.A. Harrell died in Carbondale, Jackson County. Child of Loren Bankston died 9 Apr 1896, of typho malaria, aged about 4 months. The family had just moved to Springville. 25 Apr 1896: John Powles, son of Eli Powles of Mill Creek, died 20 Apr 1896, of typhoid fever, aged 28 years, 1 month, 23 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He left a widow and three small children. Mrs.Will Jones died Monday (20 Apr 1896) at her home in the bottoms. She was the daughter of William Sharp of near Anna. Bridget Burk died 7 Apr 1896, at Mountain Glen, of consumption, aged 22 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She was Catholic. Her father died a month before. She left one sister, Mary Burk, the youngest of six children. 2 May 1896: Joel Mortimor Lee died 27 Apr 1896, of consumption, aged 37 years, 4 months, 8 days. He was born in Jackson, Mo., and came to Jonesboro in his infancy. His mother died when he was a small boy and his father died a few years afterward. His mother was a sister of J.R. English and C.C. English. He married Ida Standard, the oldest daughter of Mrs. Mary Standard (now Mrs. Mary Martin). He had three sons and two daughters. One son preceded her in death. He was a former member of the Jonesboro Band. John Drexler died 27 Apr 1896, aged 47 years, 5 months, 23 days. He was born 4 Nov 1848, in Wurtemburg, Germany, the son of J.G. and McLena Drexler. He came to the U.S. when about 16 and settled in Missouri, then in Jonesboro. He married in 1877 Rosa Ecker. He had five children, of whom four survived him. He also left a brother, William G. Drexler and a sister, Mrs. Fred Seger of Jonesboro. William S. Hase died 28 Apr 1896, aged 29 years, 11 months, 24 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born 27 May 1866, in Pope County. He married Mollie Skasicks on 10 Dec 1891. He left no children. Mrs. Webb, a sister of Mrs. Susan Brann of Anna, died in Ubet, Tennessee. 9 May 1896: William P. Taylor was hanged 1 May 1896, in Carrollton, Missouri, for the murder of the Meeks family on 10 May 1894. There is a picture of him on the front page. Oscar Brimm, son of William Brimm, died Sunday (3 May 1896) two and a half miles north of Anna from an overdose of morphine administered by his father. The parents could not read and bought a bottle of morphine, thinking it was quinine. 16 May 1896: Cora Hindman, daughter of James Hindman of Carbondale, Jackson County, died Sunday (10 May 1896) while visiting her uncle, R.R. Hindman east of Anna, and was buried in Carbondale. Francis Agnew died 9 May 1896, in Chicago, aged 59 years. He was a brick layer and in 1858 married Ellen O’Neil, who was born in 1839 in Chicago. He left seven children, all of Chicago. 23 May 1896: Mrs. Jeff Miller, formerly of Jonesboro, died Monday (18 May 1896) at Idlewild of congestive chill. Samuel H. There was a coroner’s inquest. Louisa A. Harris, wife of G.W. Harris, died 6 Jun 1896, at her home in Mountain Glen, aged 79 years, 3 months, 8 days. She was born in 1817 in Virginia. She married on 10 Apr 1842, George W. Harris and moved to Indiana and then to Jonesboro. She was converted at age 17 and was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church for over a third of a century. She had six sons and two daughters. From her first marriage she had James E. Allsip of Jonesboro, Nancy J. Sitton of Alexander County. From her second marriage she had Thomas Harris, L.O.P. Harris, Kate wife of J. Rinehart, and three children who died in infancy. Mary M. Prince, wife of John D. She was partially deaf and did not hear the train. A child of Reuben Hawkins of near Mountain Glen died the first of last week and was buried in Ullin, Pulaski County. An infant child of Ed Tash was buried Saturday (24 Oct 1896) in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Bessie Springs, daughter of Bettie Springs of Balcom, died 18 Oct 1896, agd 18 months, and was buried at Balcom. Her father, Arch Springs, was killed by a train a few weeks ago. George H. St. John died 23 Oct 1896, of consumption, at his home one and a half miles east of Anna, aged 29 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was an Odd Fellow. Richard Preston of Cairo, Alexander County, committed suicide Monday (7 Dec 1896) by shooting himself. Hannah Louisa Eastman, wife of Horace T. Eastman, died 19 Jan 1897, at her home one and a half miles south of Anna, aged 68 years, 10 months, 23 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was born in Genesee Co., N.Y., and married in 1849 in Sandusky, Ohio, Horace T. Eastman. In 1856 they moved to Anna. She had eight children, of whom seven were living. Her deceased child was Mrs. L.N. Davis of south of Anna, who died in December 1896. Sarah Ann “Aunt Sally” (Hagler) Lockard, wife of John Lockard, died 1 Jan 1897, of intussusception of the bowels, aged 73 years, 1 month, 21 days. She was born in Union County and married on 14 Nov 1844. She and her husband joined the Freewill Baptist Church in Ripley Co., Mo., in August 1845. She was the last of a family of eight children. She had six sons and four daughters, of whom two daughters preceded her in death. 30 Jan 1897: Mrs. Ritty Balance died 24 Jan 1897, at the home of Lum Balance on Hudgin’s Creek. James Lee Robinson died 9 Feb 1897, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E.R. Spence, in Anna, aged 59 years, 4 months, 9 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Nellie Wallace, daughter of Frank Wallace of Mountain Glen, died 4 Feb 1897, of diphtheria, aged 8 years. Mrs. Turnage died Thursday (11 Feb 1897) two miles west of Mountain Glen, aged about 60 years, and was buried in Penrod graveyard. 20 Feb 1897: Arthur Duestrow was hanged 16 Feb 1897, in Union, Mo., for the murder of his wife and baby in St. Louis three years ago last Saturday (13 Feb 1894). There is a picture of Duestrow on the front page. Mr. Rader was shot and killed one day last week near Marion, Williamson County, by a 17-year-old boy named Gill. 27 Feb 1897: Robert N. “Bob” Crawford died 24 Feb 1897, of paresis, aged 32 years, 10 months, 11 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was the eldest son of Judge M.C. Crawford. He was a Mason. He left a sister, Mary Crawford of Carbondale Normal School, and brothers, Stanley Crawford of Hot Springs, Ark., John Crawford of Chicago, and George Crawford of Eureka. (See also 6 Mar 1897, issue.) Julia Ann (Carter) Sexaur died 18 Feb 1897, at her home three miles west of Anna, aged 72 years, 5 months, 24 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. She was born 20 Aug 1824, in Kentucky and came to Illinois in 1829. She married on 2 Aug 1841, Caleb Hartline, who died 26 Jun 1870. Smith of Warrensburg, Mo., Lizzie wife of Calvin Ellis of Union County. Her children, G.W. Hartline, died 27 Sep 1887, in Anna, and Amanda wife of J.P. Noonan, died 20 Feb 1890, in Nebraska. She married on 15 Oct 1875, George J. Sexaur, who survived her. She also left 40 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. 6 Mar 1897: Elijah Kirby committed suicide last Monday (1 Mar 1897) at the Alexander County jail in Cairo. He had Previously killed a man in Carbondale, Jackson County, and went to the penitentiary, but was pardoned after 14 years. He had just been sentenced to another 14 years. Belle Landon, wife of Ellis Landon, died 15 Feb 1897, at her home in Mercer, Pa., of consumption. Ellis Landon’s parents reside in Anna. 20 Mar 1897: Hazel Marie Rendleman, only daughter of P.J. and Katie H. Rendleman, died Wednesday last week (10 Mar 1897) at her home in Makanda, aged 2 years, 6 months, 25 days, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. Her parents had six children and only one survived. Eliza Lence, widow of John J. Lence, died 16 Mar 1897, at the home of Jacob Grear in Jonesboro, aged 63 years, 4 months, 26 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She returned an invalid from Brenham, Texas, last year. She was the stepmother of Dr. W.C. Lence and a sister of Mrs. A.H. Crowell. James Brown, of west of Jonesboro, died 18 Mar 1897, aged about 40 years. He married the daughter of John K. Tripp. He also left a wife and six children. Ernest T. Grieb, youngest son of John M. Grieb, died 18 Mar 1897, at his home in Jonesboro of congestion of the brain and rheumatism of the heart, aged 22 years, 1 month, 17 days, and was buried in the family cemetery near Kornthal Church. Last Wednesday (26 Jan 1898) Henry Grieb opened the back of a watch that belonged to his brother, Ernest Grieb, and found a note: “I buried seventy dollars in gold in a pocket book under the cellar stairs at home.” Henry found three $20 gold pieces and one $10 gold piece (29 Jan 1898, issue). Mrs. Elmira Misenhimer (also as Meisenheimer), wife of F.W. Misenhimer, formerly of Ava, committed suicide by shooting herself at her home in Anna Tuesday (16 Mar 1897), and was buried in Dongola. She was the daughter of J.C. Lentz of Dongola. (See also 27 Mar 1897, issue.) Peter Dillow Jr. died 11 Mar 1897, of pneumonia, aged 65 years, 11 months. He was the fifth son of 10 brothers and four sisters born to Peter and Polly (Lence) Dillow, who came to Union County from Rowan Co., N.C., in 1818. He married Mary Poole on 17 Dec 1856. They had three sons and two daughters. 27 Mar 1897: Peter Tharpe, formerly of Jonesboro, died a couple weeks ago at his home in Memphis, Tenn., of consumption. His widow was a sister of Miss Bettie Pender of Jonesboro (25 Sep 1897, issue). Infant child of William Dew died 21 Mar 1897, aged 6 months. Joseph Forrister, engineer of Mt. Carbon, and James D. Anderson, fireman, of Carbondale, Jackson County, were killed when their Chicago & Texas train plunged off a bridge at Aldridge, 24 miles south of Murphysboro, Jackson County. Forrister left a wife and six children and was the brother of Postmaster Robert Forrester of Murphysboro. Anderson’s body was recovered (10 Apr 1897, issue). Infant daughter of John Boyd died 24 Mar 1897, at her home in North Anna, aged a little over 2 months. Sarah Roth, wife of John Roth, died 19 Mar 1897, at her home three miles south of Anna, of consumption, aged about 35 years. She left a husband and four small children. A woman in Dexter, Mo., was given an overdose of morphine by Dr. W.H. Davis, formerly of Anna, who was charged with her murder. James M. Lackey died 21 Mar 1897, at his home in Anna, aged 56 years, 7 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He left a wife and a grown son. 3 Apr 1897: Mattie Olmsted, wife of Charles Olmsted, died 16 Mar 1897, in Bloomington, and was buried in the family cemetery at Olmsted, Pulaski County. Laura Warner died 30 Mar 1897, at the home of her father, John Warner, in Anna, aged 18 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Milt Manning, formerly of Anna, was struck by a train and killed near Lackey Crossing at Balcom, aged nearly 50 years. He left a wife, daughter and a brother. George Gregory died 28 Mar 1897, at his home in Alto Pass, and was buried in Dutch Ridge Cemetery. Daisy Walker, youngest child of George Walker, died 8 Apr 1897, at her father’s home on the Steers farm north of Anna, aged 9 years, and was buried in Capser Cemetery. Edward P. Harmon, died 19 Apr 1897, at his home in Cobden, aged 49 years, 11 months, 19 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a member of G.A.R. 1 May 1897: Thomas Fassett Bouton died 24 Apr 1897, of apoplexy at his home in Jonesboro, aged 65 years, 9 months, 24 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. His request was to be later buried beside his wife in Jackson, Mich. He was born 30 Jun 1831, in Farmington, Trumball Co., Ohio, the son of the Rev. Enoch Bouton, a Presbyterian minister, who died when he was a child. His mother, whose maiden name was Cushman, was descended from the Mayflower Cushmans and died in Jonesboro in 1873. He married on 21 Dec 1854, Sarah Jane Cady, who died 5 Jul 1879. He bought the Jonesboro Gazette in September 1866 from Perryman and Harris. In March 1892 he sold it to A.S. Tibbets. His son, Harvey C. Bouton, editor of the Anna Farmer & Fruit Grower, died 19 Dec 1886. He left a brother, Gardiner S. Bouton, of Clayton, St. Louis, Co., Mo., one son, Thomas J. Bouton, editor of the Livingston (Mont.) Herald, and one daughter, Esther S. wife of A.S. Tibbets, and one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Allie D. Bouton of Anna. He was a Mason. The issue has a picture of him. Infant child of Zack Durham drowned in Williamson County last Sunday (2 May 1897) crossing a swollen stream in a wagon. Infant of Jos. P. Edar, born 2 Apr 1897, died 25 Apr 1897, and was buried in Whitlock Cemetery near Elco, Alexander County. 8 May 1897: Clarence Byrd, son of Stephen Byrd, died 4 May 1897, in Jonesboro of congestive chill, aged 11 years, 10 months, 27 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Father of Mrs. George James of Alto Pass was shot and killed in Mississippi by his son. 15 May 1897: Matilda (Hileman) Barringer died 8 May 1897, in Jonesboro, aged 68 years, 6 months, 1 day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was the third child of Christian and Nancy (Davis) Hileman. She married on 5 Mar 1848, Charles Barringer. She had six children, of whom three were living, George Barringer, county superintendent of schools, Mrs. Nannie C. Jones, and Mrs. C.O. Morrell of Jacksonville. Martha Frances (Wilson) Tibbets died 9 May 1897, in Jonesboro, of general debility and old age, aged 76 years, 2 months, 20 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Hardin Co., Va., and married on 20 Feb 1845, Hiram Tibbets, also a native of Virginia. They came to Illinois in 1850 and to Jonesboro in 1868. They had a large family of children, of whom two, A.S. Tibbets and Marcia Tibbets, were living. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for 60 years. Mrs. Ellen (Cruse) Chase died 11 May 1897, of cancer of the stomach in Jonesboro, aged 53 years, 7 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was the youngest of 14 children of Peter and Sophia (Hess) Cruse and married on 28 Jun 1859, Charles S. Chase of Herkimer Co., N.Y. She had 14 children, of whom 13 were living. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Mother Givins died at her home on Eveline Street in Murphysboro, Jackson County, last night, aged about 112 years. She had six children, the youngest being Bill Givins of Murphysboro, aged 77 years. 29 May 1897: Elijah Griffin died 24 May 1897, at his home in Anna, aged nearly 80 years, and was buried in Anna. He left a wife and two daughters, Mrs. Julia Miller of Lick Creek and Mrs. Belle Bailey of Thebes, Alexander County. Constable Dug Detrich, of Ullin, Pulaski County, was shot by a Negro in Wetaug last Friday (7 May 1897) and died Tuesday (18 May 1897) at the hospital in Cairo, Pulaski County. He left a wife and several children. 5 Jun 1897: Cindonna (Meadows) Grear, wife of ex-mayor John Grear, died 28 May 1897, of paralysis, aged 68 years, 5 months, 2 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Newbern, N.C., and moved to Jonesboro in 1853. On 13 Apr 1897, the couple celebrated their golden anniversary. She had four children, of whom three were living, Walter Grear of Anna, John W. Grear of Murphysboro, Jackson County, and Harry Grear of Cairo, Alexander County. George W. Crowell died 29 May 1897, at his home two and a half miles west of Jonesboro, of paralysis, aged 67 years, 11 months, 23 days. His wife, Mary J. Crowell, died 11 Aug 1887. Weaver died 17 Jun 1897, of cancer of the stomach, at the home of her son-in-law, Paul Dillow, aged 68 years, 10 months, 28 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She left four children, Mrs. Paul Dillow, John Weaver, Mrs. Levi Fink, and Mrs. Walter Morgan; two sisters, Mrs. White of Anna and Mrs. Jack Mull; and two brothers, Eli Douglas and Henry Douglas. George W. Chase, son of Charles S. Chase, committed suicide 23 Jun 1897, by shooting himself with a shotgun at his home on West Main Street, aged 26 years, 4 months, 5 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was a member of the M.E. Church. C.J. Wilcox, of four miles northeast of Anna, died Thursday (24 Jun 1897) and was buried in Anna Cemetery. His wife was later judged insane and sent to the asylum (3 Jul 1897, issue). Charles Wells died 16 Jun 1897, of consumption, aged 28 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. Chellis Lloyd Dillow, son of L.E. Dillow, died 13 Jun 1897, aged 16 months, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. M.E. Davis, of Dongola, died 18 Jun 1897, in St. Louis of appendicitis, aged 36 years. He left a wife and three children. 3 Jul 1897: Oldest son of John Winn of near Moore, shot himself last Friday (25 Jun 1897) playing with a revolver. Infant child of Sam Morgan died last Monday (28 Jun 1897) at his home west of Jonesboro and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Mrs. Lizzie Bartlett died 29 Jun 1897, at her home in Anna, aged 38 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left four sons and two daughters. John Bunda Carlile, son of T.A. Minnie (Boone) Traverse, daughter of Thomas Boone of Anna, died recently in Augusta, Ga. She left one daughter, who was sent to Anna to live with her grandparents. Jenyon M. Burns was accidently drowned at the fairgrounds pond in Anna Tuesday (6 Jul 1897), aged 28 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was a member of the Christian Church. His father lived in Pulley’s Mill, Williamson County, and he had a brother in Kentucky and an Aunt Childers of near Anna. Infant of Fay Stone died Thursday (8 Jul 1897), aged 3 months, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. 17 Jul 1897: George W. Smith, of Denver, Colo., died in Victor, Colo., and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery near Makanda beside his children. He was the father of Mr. G.S. Hoag and Harry Smith. He was born in 1837 in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and drove cattle to Pike’s Peak when gold was discovered there. He moved to Water Valley in 1866 and to Makanda in 1867. He was a Mason. He left a widow in Colorado. Louis Gattinger, of between Alton and Godfrey, was shot through the heart and died after quarreling with his daughter, aged 68 years. He had lived there for 30 years. He was a brother of Joseph Gattinger of Mound City, Pulaski County, Mrs. John M. Grieb, Mrs. Paul Misenhimer of Jonesboro, and Mrs. John G. Soergel of Enterprise, Miss. Mary Sitter, daughter of A.J. Sitter, died 13 Jul 1897, at her home three miles east of Anna, aged 2 months, 16 days, and was buried in Williams Cemetery. 24 Jul 1897: Sam Wallace was shot and killed by Buck Johnson in Vienna, Johnson County, last Saturday (17 Jul 1897) because he was paying too much attention to Johnson’s daughter. John Reubencamp, aged about 60 years, committed suicide Wednesday (21 Jul 1897) in Anna Cemetery near his wife’s grave by swallowing carbolic acid. He was a Civil War pensioner and had no known relatives. The suicide was witnessed by Cornelius Pelley, the cemetery sexton. Mary Burk, of Mountain Glen, died of consumption one day last week. 7 Aug 1897: Infant of Len Cavanes of Mountain Glen, died Thursday (5 Aug 1897) and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Infant of Silas Hartline of Mountain Glen, died last week and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. George W. Burton died last Saturday (31 Jul 1897) at his home in Jonesboro, aged 65 years, and was buried near Alto Pass. He left a widow and several children. Infant son of Walter Corgan of Alto Pass, died Thursday (5 Aug 1897) and was buried in Limestone Cemetery. 21 Aug 1897: Ollie Roberts died 13 Aug 1897, at the home of her father, William Roberts, aged 22 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was a widow and left two children, Mrs. John Baldon of Anna and James Lippard of Johnson County. Kate L. Ede died 21 Aug 1897, at the home of her father, Capt. H. Holcomb, formerly of Cobden, died 24 Aug 1897, of dengue fever at his home in Ocean Springs, Miss., aged 68 years. He left a widow, but no children. She went to stay with her foster son, Dr. J.C. Charlie Moore died Saturday (28 Aug 1897) at his home in North Anna, aged 10 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery, 11 Sep 1897: Paul Frick died 3 Sep 1897, at his home in Jonesboro of stroke of paralysis, aged 81 years, 1 month, 25 days. He was born 9 Jul 1816, in Rowan Co., N.C. His (great-)grandparents came from Switzerland about 1740 and settled in Bucks Co., Pa. Their son, Rudy Frick, was born in Bucks Co., Pa., and moved to Rowan Co., N.C., in 1755. His son, Jacob Frick, was born in Pennsylvania and married in Rowan Co., N.C., Elizabeth Earnhart. They had 12 children, of whom Paul Frick was the youngest. Jacob was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and came to Union County Christmas Day, 1823. Paul married on 25 Jul 1839, Hanna M. McIntosh, born 13 Jul 1820, in Jonesboro, the daughter of John and Mary (Miller) McIntosh, and died 14 May 1873. She had seven children: Martha J. Frick, deceased, Elizabeth A. wife of Davis W. Miller of Chicago, William Dennis Frick, Laura Ann Frick, Mary F. Frick, deceased, Helen A. Frick, and Cyrus W. Frick, deceased. Paul married 2nd Mrs. Nancy Walker, who was born 24 Jun 1819, the daughter of Robert and Catharine (Hunsaker) Hargrave. She had four children by her first husband: Laura wife of James DeWitt; William W. Walker, married Sarah I. Williford; Willis W. Walker, married Nettie Scott; and Flora wife of Walter Grear. Eli Wilson died Thursday (9 Sep 1897) at his home in Paducah, Ky. His funeral was in Wetaug, Pulaski County. He was a brother of Mrs. J.I. Hale and Mrs. Polly Landreth of Anna. John Harley Mitchell, formerly of Cobden, died 4 Sep 1897, at his home in Anna, aged about 56 years. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Cobden. He left one son, Walter Mitchell, of Anna. L.W. “Walter” Kelley died 30 Sep 1897, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born 16 Apr 1860, west of Dongola, the oldest son of Daniel M. and Almarinth Kelley. Their youngest son, George Kelley, a brother of Walter, died a few years ago. Walter married on 30 Dec 1885, Alice Barringer. He joined the Presbyterian Church in 1894. He left a wife, four daughters, a brother, John Kelley of Anna, and five sisters. 16 Oct 1897: Josie Rendleman died 5 Oct 1897, at the home of her mother, Eliza Rendleman, in Alto Pass, aged 36 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She had been an invalid for many years due to spinal troubles. Thomas Springs died 9 Oct 1897, of consumption, at the home of his mother in Anna, aged 19 years, 6 months, 15 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Mrs. Ellen G. He was born in Wien, Austria, and came to the U.S. in 1858. He married in 1860 in Union County Theresa Gattinger, who died 7 Nov 1894. He left five children. 30 Oct 1897: A.H. Riedel of Mountain Glen, died Wednesday (27 Oct 1897), aged 62 years, 3 months, 25 days, and was buried on his farm beside his wife. He came from Germany in 1866. He left a son and daughter. Ethel Clutts, daughter of Ed Clutts, died Monday (25 Oct 1897) in Makanda of diphtheria. Samuel Jackson, of Vienna, Johnson County, died Saturday (23 Oct 1897) aged 66 years. He lived in Jonesboro before the Civil War. He left a widow and several children, one of whom was John B. Jackson of Jonesboro. John Drum, aged 24 years, was accidentally shot and killed Saturday (23 Oct 1897) by his sister, Ruby Drum, age 15, in the bottoms near Aldridge. Thomas Anthony’s pistol fell from his hip pocket in the wagon and the gun discharged as she was handing it back to him. Mrs. Mary Costigan died 21 Oct 1897, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S.C. Russell, in Anna, aged 80 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left two children, Mrs. Russell and Cornelius Costigan of Mississippi. The late James Costigan, of Anna, was also her son. 6 Nov 1897: Miss Loretta Goodrich died 30 Oct 1897, at the home of her uncle, E.N. Clark, of Cobden, aged about 64 years, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She left three brothers and three sisters. 13 Nov 1897: Infant of Frank Wallace of Mountain Glen died of spasmodic croup and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. J.C. Burnley, of four miles east of Anna, died 7 Nov 1897, in Carterville, Williamson County, of appendicitis, aged 48 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He went to Carterville to visit his brother-in-law, Belve Murphy. He left a wife and six children. Miss Nellie Troy of Carbondale, Jackson County, died last Thursday (11 Nov 1897). She was a former school teacher in Anna. A 1 Jan 1898, issue reported that “Nellie C. Troy of Carbondale spent last week with Mrs. Crit Rendleman. Ollie Damron, daughter of Mollie Damron, died 4 Nov 1897, aged 7 months, and was buried in Saratoga Cemetery. 20 Nov 1897: J.D. Bridges, of Dongola, was run over by a train and killed in Dongola 2 Nov 1897. Andre Thomas died 16 Nov 1897, aged 69 years, 7 months, 25 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He left a wife and two grown children. He had lived in Cobden 20 years. 27 Nov 1897: Daughter of G.H. Littlejohn died Sunday (21 Nov 1897), aged 3 weeks, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. Infant son of A.J. Cauble died Sunday (21 Nov 1897), aged 1 week, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. Jefferson Burkett, a patient in the hospital, committed suicide last Friday (26 Nov 1897) by hanging himself with a handkerchief tied to his bed, and was buried in Xenia, Clay County, where he had a son living. 4 Dec 1897: Wife of Hon. W.A. Wall died 29 Nov 1897, at her home in Mound City, Pulaski County. 11 Dec 1897: Turner Hearne accidentally shot and killed himself while crossing a fence rabbit hunting on the farm of his father-in-law, Harris Rendleman, one mile south of Cobden. He was formerly of Carbondale, Jackson County, and left a wife and one child. Millie C. Rich, wife of William C. Rich Sr., died 8 Dec 1897, at her home two miles east of Cobden, aged 73 years, 4 months, and 3 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She was a sister of the late James Guthrie. She left a large family of children and grandchildren. Capt. William McNiel, of Pinckneyville, Perry County, died 25 Nov 1897, at St. Luke’s hospital in St. Louis. Dr. S.S. Harris, of Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Monday (6 Dec 1897) at St. Luke’s hospital in St. Louis. Will F. Robinson, son of A.W. Robinson, died at his home in Anna, aged 25 years, 6 months, 18 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. Piety E. Mangold, widow of B.F. Mangold, died 2 Dec 1897, at her home on South Chestnut Street, Anna, aged 58 years, 11 months, 1 day, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left seven children. Elizabeth Jane Coleman, wife of Frank M. Coleman, died 4 Dec 1897, at her home on Washington Street in Anna, aged 41 years, 11 months, 12 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left a husband and four children, Mrs. Anna Conklin of Cairo, Alexander County, John Coleman, Charles Coleman, and Ella Coleman, of Anna. Mrs. Almira Boyd died 8 Dec 1897, of hemorrhage of the lungs, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Giles Corzine, three miles east of Anna, aged 71 years, 3 months, 2 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She left three sons, John Boyd of Anna, Jerry Boyd of south of Anna, James Boyd of Lick Creek, and and one daughter, Mrs. Corzine. Henry Casper, son of Jacob Casper, died 5 Dec 1897, of dropsy of the heart, at his home three miles south of Jonesboro, aged 61 years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He served in Capt. Hunsaker’s company, 109th Regiment during the Civil War. He left a wife and two children, William Casper at home, and Mrs. Sherman Smith of Anna; several brothers and sisters. 18 Dec 1897: Thomas Quincy Province died 13 Dec 1897, of typhoid pneumonia at his home two miles north of Mountain Glen, and was buried in Toledo Cemetery. He was a member of the Congregational Church. He left a widow and one son. Capt. Jewett Wilcox, formerly of Cairo, Alexander County, where he managed the St. Charles Hotel, died last Saturday (11 Dec 1897) in Chicago. Ross Lingle, son of Josiah M. and Nellie Lingle, died last Wednesday (8 Dec 1897) of typhoid fever, aged 12 years, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. (See also 26 Mar 1898, issue.) Harriet Miller, youngest daughter of A.J. Miller, of Cobden, died 11 Dec 1897, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 25 Dec 1897: Mrs. Dew died 17 Dec 1897, at the home of her son, William Dew, in Jonesboro, aged 82 years, 11 months, 29 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. 1 Jan 1898: David Oxley, of Centralia, died last Thursday (30 Dec 1897). He oversaw the construction of the Illinois Central Railroad through Union County. Annie Bliss, only child of L.F. Bliss, died 27 Dec 1897, of diptheria at her home in Anna, aged 8 years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. 8 Jan 1898: James A. Bradley died last Thursday (30 Dec 1897) at his home near Shiloh Church in Toppingtown and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery Wednesday (5 Jan 1898). 15 Jan 1898: Jennie (Hunsaker) White, wife of Dr. W.G. White, of Bumcombe, Johnson County, died 30 Dec 1897, aged 33 years, 8 months, 18 days, and was buried in the same casket with her infant in the Masonic Cemetery north of Vienna, Johnson County.. She was the daughter of Squire Mort Hunsaker and married Dr. White three years ago. Their child died one week after it was born 31 Dec 1897. Dr. White’s first wife died several years ago.
