Napoleon B. Collins died 2 Jan 1892, aged 80 years, 10 months.

Obe Wilson died at Hodges Park, Alexander County, two weeks ago.

Alice E. Rich, wife of M.M. Rich, died 30 Dec 1891, at her residence four miles east of Cobden

near Western Saratoga, aged 32 years, 8 months, 25 days, and was buried in Rich Cemetery near Cobden. She left a husband and five small children. She was a sister of G.W. Otrich of near Dongola, Dr. C.L. Otrich, and Mrs. Weaver of south of Jonesboro.

Willis Lamer died 5 Jan 1892, aged 43 years, 4 months, 12 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

He was born 23 Aug 1848, two and a half miles northwest of Cobden. He was a Mason. (See also 16 Jan 1892, issue.)

E.W. Towne died 5 Jan 1892, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Frick, aged 89 years, 4

months, 4 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born in New England and lived in Cobden 30 years.

John F. Little died 28 Dec 1891, at his residence in Dongola, aged 81 years, 1 month, 15 days,

and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola. He was born in Campton, New Hampshire, 13 Nov 1810.

Cora Lingle, daughter of Daniel Lingle, died 29 Dec 1891, aged 8 years.

Mrs. J.C. Goodman, daughter of Adam Eddleman, died 31 Dec 1891, in Anna. She left a husband and

five children.

Selma H. Dobler, granddaughter of Mrs. C. Roberts of Jonesboro, died 6 Jan 1892, at the residence of

her uncle, Dr. Nichols, in St. Louis, Missouri, aged 12 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Lucy N. Baker died 1 Jan 1892, in Jonesboro, aged 22 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

She was a Baptist.

Ernest Frederick Kollehner, youngest son of Joseph Kollehner, died 6 Jan 1892, of la grippe at

his residence two miles south of Jonesboro, aged 33 years, 4 months, 28 days, and was buried in Kollehner Cemetery. He married Katherine Weber. He also left three children, an aged mother, two brothers, John Kollehner and Joseph Kollehner of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and a sister, Mrs. John Ransmeier.


16 Jan 1892:

Will J. Hastings, only son of Dr. W.W. Hastings, died 2 Jan 1892.

John Smoot died 9 Jan 1892, of la grippe and pneumonia. He was married twice and raised a large

family.

J.B. McCallen died 8 Jan 1892, at his residence in Dongola, aged 79 years, 7 months, 21 days.

He was born in Orange County, North Carolina, 17 May 1812, the youngest son of James and Jane (Turner) McCallen. He married Lucinda Thompson on 20 Aug 1829, and they were married 60 years. He moved to Grant County, Kentucky. In 1843 he moved to Dongola, seven or eight years later he moved to Rhode Island, three years later to Pennsylvania, then to Tennessee, and then returned to Dongola. He was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister. He had eight children; three of whom survived him.

Sina E. Wilson Scurlock died 10 Jan 1892, at the residence of her son, George Scurlock, aged 67 years.

She was born in Tennessee and moved to Dongola 24 years ago. Her husband, Joshua Scurlock, died about 12 years ago. She left two children.

Thomas Dillow, only child of Walter Dillow, died 12 Jan 1892, of diphtheria at his residence two miles

south of Jonesboro, aged 13 years. This was the fourth Dillow child to die.


23 Jan 1892:

Mary (Presson) McDaniel, wife of Ed McDaniel, died last Monday (18 Jan 1892) in Makanda. She left

a week old baby.

Infant of Will Parker died Tuesday (19 Jan 1892) in Makanda.

Daughter of John Hileman died Wednesday (20 Jan 1892) in Lake Hills.

Child of Mrs. Slaughter of the eastern part of Jonesboro died last Monday (18 Jan 1892), aged

11 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

John A. Morris died 15 Jan 1892, at his residence in Jonesboro, of la grippe, aged 55 years, 24

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born 22 Dec 1836, in Sumner County, Tennessee and came to Pope County, Illinois with parents when 16. He married in November 1856 Josephine Lee, daughter of the Rev. Isaac Lee, in Alexander County. They moved to Patoka, Marion County, where she died November 1866. He moved to Alexander County and married April 1867 Nancy J. (McCrite) Lee, daughter of Hon. J.E. McCrite. He moved to Mill Creek 12 years ago and opened a grocery and dry goods store. In December 1890 he moved to Jonesboro and opened a grocery. He left a wife, one son, and six daughters.

Katharina (Weber) Kollehner, widow of Ernest F. Kollehner, died 14 Jan 1892, aged 32 years, and was

buried in Kollehner Cemetery. She left three children.

Mary Ethel Bell Smith, daughter of Robert A. Smith, died 13 Jan 1892, in Anna of membraneous

croup, aged 3 years, 3 months, 10 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

“Dock” Toler of Dongola died.

Joshua Crandle died 15 Jan 1892, at his residence in Dongola, aged 69 years, and was buried in I.O.O.F.

Cemetery. He was born 4 June (1822?) in Tennessee and came to Union County in his youth.

John F. Hunsaker died 17 Jan 1892, at his residence two miles west of Cobden of pleurisy, aged

48 years, 3 months, 18 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was a G.A.R. member. (See also 30 Jan 1892, issue.)


30 Jan 1892:

James P. McLain died 21 Jan 1892, at his residence four miles east of Dongola of pneumonia,

aged 59 years, 5 months, 28 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, 23 Jul 1832. He was a member of the Odd Fellow’s Lodge. He married twice.

Mrs. C. Cook, widow of William Cook, mother of Mrs. Dr. Fitzgibbon, died 26 Jan 1892, at her

residence near Wetaug, Pulaski County, aged 62 years. She fell on the ice 20 Jan 1892.

Susan Truett died 25 Jan 1892, of consumption, aged about 55 years.

John Boyd, son of John R. Boyd, died 23 Jan 1892, aged 11 days.

Bessie Locklar, infant daughter of A.J. Locklar, died 20 Jan 1892, aged 8 months, 20 days.


6 Feb 1892:

Minerva (Clutts) Stout died 13 Dec 1891, of la grippe, and was buried in Water Valley Cemetery.

She was born 2 Dec 1832, in Union County and married William J. Stout at aged 20. She had nine children, seven of whom survived her.

Josephine Parker, wife of Will Parker, died of la grippe in Makanda.

A. Jack Etherton died of la grippe near Krysher’s home farm.

Mrs. Stiner died of la grippe.

Lillian Spann, wife of Dr. C.P. Spann died 27 Jan 1892, of pneumonia.

Eli Boren died Monday (1 Feb 1892). He was living on Eli Keller place at Lake Hills and was thrown

from a wagon and killed while drunk. He had been implicated in the Billy “Buck” Spence tragedy in Makanda several years ago. (See also the notes above under the 20 Dec 1873, issue.)


13 Feb 1892:

Old Man Sellers died Wednesday (10 Feb 1892) east of Dongola.

Old Mr. Chitty died Monday (8 Feb 1892), and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was a G.A.R.

member.

Nancy Williams, wife of P.G. Williams, died 7 Feb 1892, in Jonesboro, aged 46 years, 3 months,

and 13 days, and was buried in Morgan Cemetery.

George W. Elms died 5 Feb 1892, at his residence in Jonesboro, aged 59 years, 5 months, 13 days, and

was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born in Johnson County and was a Civil War veteran. He left several children.


20 Feb 1892:

Child of Frank Capron died six miles northeast of Dongola, and was buried in Karraker Cemetery.

Lorenzo Dow Kelley, son of John Kelley, died 12 Feb 1892, aged 67 years, 5 month, 12 days, and was

buried in Union Cemetery, three miles west of Dongola. He was born in Montgomery County, Illinois, 27 Aug 1824. He came to Union County in 1851, left and returned in 1853. He left a widow and a son, W.A. Kelley.

Mrs. Eliza B. Finley died 12 Feb 1892, in Maywood, a suburb of Chicago, aged 74 years, and was buried

in Cobden Cemetery.


27 Feb 1892:

Mrs. Armstead Butler died 22 Feb 1892, of heart disease, aged about 45 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery. He left a number of children.

Mrs. Hubbard of Pana, formerly of Anna, mother of Mrs. H.P. Tuthill and Mrs. C.E. Kirkpatrick, died.


5 Mar 1892:

Mary C. (Marberry) Wagner died at her residence in Jonesboro 26 Feb 1892, from a fall Wednesday

night (2 Mar 1892) down the steps, aged 67 years, 6 months, 9 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She married William A. Brown, who died about 1869. She arried 2nd John Wagner. She left four sons, George Brown, H.L. Brown, Arthur Brown, and ?, and two daughters, Mrs. W.J. House and Mrs. Zeph McBride. John Marberry of Robinson, was the son of Mrs. John Wagner’s only living brother.

Son of John Clements of Dongola died last Sunday (28 Feb 1892), and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Child of William F. Dew died last Saturday (27 Feb 1892) of diptheria, aged 2 years.

Ida E. Wise died 29 Feb 1892, of consumption at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Louisa H. Wise, in

Anna, aged 24 years, 1 month, 23 days.

Mrs. Nancy Hamilton, wife of West Hamilton, died 23 Feb 1892, aged 35 years, and was buried in

Landreth Cemetery. She left a husband and two small children.


12 Mar 1892:

George Cooper committed suicide last Sunday (6 Mar 1892) aged about 60 years. He had been

employed by Capt. A. Lence at Willard’s Landing for 25 years. He left a wife, from whom he was separated, and two daughters, all living in Arkansas.

James O. “Uncle Jimmy” Cozby died 7 Mar 1892, at the residence of his son, T.C. Cozby. He was born

24 Oct 1817, in South Carolina, the oldest of 15 children. He married Rebecca D. Carlisle on 2 Dec 1841. He moved to Mississippi in 1844, to Illinois in December 1867, and to Jonesboro in 1868. He had seven children, four of whom survived him, Thomas C. Cozby, Henry P. Cozby, J. Warren Cozby, and Mrs. Louisa Stephens of Helena, Arkansas. He was the grandfather of 15 and great-grandfather of two. He left one sister, Mrs. E.I. Carlisle of Anna. He was a Presbyterian.

Mrs. Jacob H. Poole, daughter of Abe Brown, died 5 Mar 1892, of la grippe, at her residence south of

Jonesboro, aged 41 years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She left several children. She was a Congregationalist.

Fannie Chapman, widow of A.H. Chapman, died last week of consumption, and was buried in Mt.

Tabor Cemetery beside her husband.


19 Mar 1892:

Charles W. Hartline died 12 or 13 Mar 1892, at his residence three miles west of Wetaug, Pulaski

County, of typhoid fever, aged 58 years, 6 months, 16 days, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. He came from North Carolina to Illinois when 5. He was married twice. He left a wife and four children.

Cyrus M. Parker (?) died 15 Mar 1892, at the residence of his mother, aged 30 years, 2 months, and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Caleb Knupp of Springville was found dead Wednesday (16 Mar 1892) one and a half miles from his

home. He died of heart disease and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born 17 Jun 1826. He was a cooper and a member of the German Reformed Church. He was a member of 109th Regiment in the Civil War. He came near drowning when the boat he was returning home in from the war sank. (See also 26 Mar 1892, issue.)


26 Mar 1892:

Morton Eddleman, son of Sandy Eddleman, died 18 Mar 1892, aged 4 months, 14 days.

John Craiglow died 17 Mar 1892, in the bottoms, aged about 47 years, and was buried in Morgan

Cemetery.

Nettie Laws, wife of David Laws, died at her residence two miles north of Anna, aged 20 years.

She left a husband and one infant.


2 Apr 1892:

Augustus Simpson died 27 Mar 1892, at his residence five miles east of Dongola of pneumonia,

aged about 30 years. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. He left a wife and three children.

Solomon Farenback died last week in Unity, Alexander County, of heart failure.

Mrs. John M. Craver died 11 Mar 1892, in Anclote (?), Florida, aged 28 years.

Tena L. Hileman, wife of Jacob Hileman, was struck by a train while crossing the tracks. She

left a husband and grown children.

Isaac J. Sitter died 29 Mar 1892, at his residence nine miles east of Anna, aged 70 years, 1 month, 17

days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.


9 Apr 1892:

Will Hastings was killed by Frank Woodland in Murphysboro, Jackson County. (This may be

the same person as Will J. Hastings mentioned earlier in the 16 Jan 1892, issue. The 16 Apr 1892, issue reports on the trial of Robert Morton for killing Hastings.)

Son of Trav File died Monday ( 4 Apr 1892) aged 5 months, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in

Dongola.


16 Apr 1892:

Hildegardest (?) Hofmann died Wednesday (13 Apr 1892) of neuralgia of the heart, aged 62 years, 1

month, 27 days. She left three sons and three daughters.

Walter Alexander, formerly of the bottoms, died this week in Murphysboro, Jackson County.


30 Apr 1892:

Mary Hopkins Springer, wife of Josh Springer, of Pomona Ridge, Jackson County, died Monday last

week (18 Apr 1892?) of la grippe. She left a husband, two sons, a 2-day-old infant, three sisters, and a brother. Her father died of la grippe two months ago.

Lawrence A. Dubois, son of Dr. A.M. Dubois, died 25 Apr 1892, in Windsor, Illinois, of consumption,

aged 27 years, 9 months, 11 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Wife of Walter Hartline died 21 Apr 1892. She also left a 5-month-old infant.

Emma Brown, wife of Henry Brown, died 29 Apr 1892, at Ervin Sadler’s, buried in Casper graveyard.


14 May 1892:

Anna Beaver died 4 May 1892, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J.C. Lentz in Dongola, and was

buried at Mt. Pisgah. She was born 20 Jan 1815, in Jones County, North Carolina. She left four daughters.

Laura J. (Willis) Inman died 5 May 1892, at Willard’s Landing, aged 33 years, 5 months, 14

days. She was born near Greenville, South Carolina and married Henderson Inman on 3 Dec 1878. She came to Illinois about eight years ago. She was a Southern Methodist. She left a husband and four children, the youngest 6 weeks old.

Child of Mr. Keller of Alto Pass died Tuesday (10 May 1892) of diphtheria, aged about 6 years, and was

buried in Jonesboro.


21 May 1892:

Viola Stanfield, wife of Thomas G. Stanfield, was poisoned by her husband in Alto Pass at the

residence of her father, James Morris. They married last December and moved to Alto Pass from Dunklin County, Missouri, on 13 May 1892. Her father and her brothers, Ham Morris and Monroe Morris, became sick from the poison, but recovered.

Mary Cover died 17 May 1892, at her residence in Anna, aged 73 years, 3 months, 27 days, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Davidson County, North Carolina, 20 Jan 1819. She came to Jonesboro in 1828 with her parents, Michael and Susannah Craver, whose home was on South Main Street, where she lived until she married Daniel D. Cover on 28 Jun 1840. She moved to Anna in 1855. Her husband died 14 Feb 1878. She had eight children; two sons and three daughters survived her: J.R. Cover, J.M. Cover, and Mary E. Cover, all of Anna; Mrs. Florence W. Green of west of Jonesboro; and Mrs. Isabella Brown of Murphysboro. (See also 28 May 1892, issue.)

George Frogge drowned last week attempting to cross a slough near Preston on his mule, aged 29

years. He was unmarried and constable of Preston Precinct. His brother tried to save him.

Alice Jane Ferrill, wife of Henry Ferrill, died 23 May 1892, of la grippe at her residence in

Jonesboro, aged 50 years, 7 months, 6 days, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She was a member of Anna Church of Christ. She left a husband and seven children.

James Brown died Monday (23 May 1892), aged about 17 years, and was buried at Lick Creek.


4 Jun 1892:

Nancy E. (Bennett) Dresser died 28 May 1892, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E.H. Finch, in

Anna, aged 83 years, 11 months, 26 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was born 3 Jun 1808, in Halifax Court House, Halifax County, Virginia, and married Nathan Dresser in October 1837, in Petersburg, Illinois. He died 29 Dec 1868, in Anna. She had 15 children; only one daughter survived her.


11 Jun 1892:

Mrs. W.S. Clarke of Murphysboro, Jackson County, sister of A.J. Hunsaker of Jonesboro, died last

Monday (6 Jun 1892), aged 45 years. She left four children.


18 Jun 1892:

Minnie Eddleman, wife of Sandy Eddleman, died 8 Jun 1892, in Martin, Tennessee, aged 26

years, 10 months, 12 days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola. She was born in Manleyville, Tennessee, 26 Jul 1865.

 

25 Jun 1892:

Mrs. Sandy, formerly Mrs. Rev. A. Durham, died last Thursday (16 Jun 1892?) in Missouri.

The Rev. Durham died several years ago. She left one child, Mrs. Dr. Gay.


16 Jul 1892:

Child of John S. Springer died last Tuesday (12 Jul 1892) of enterocarditis, aged 3 years.

Infant of A.F. Ferguson of Springville died, aged 2 months, and was buried in Union Cemetery. This

was their eleventh child, none of whom lived longer than two years.

Hezekiah A. Jones died 12 Jul 1892, at his residence four miles southeast of Anna, aged 51 years,

8 months, 21 days. He was born in Union County.

Mrs. M. Leach died 13 Jul 1892, at her residence in Anna.

James H. Manning died 12 Jul 1892, aged 74 years, 5 months, 7 days, and was buried in Karraker

Cemetery. He was born in Middle Tennessee. He came to Illinois and settled near Anna with his widowed mother in 1844. He married in 1847 Anna Bickerstaph, who died in 1872. Mrs. A. Woodard of Dongola was his daughter.

Charles Hartline of Cobden Precinct died Wednesday (13 Jul 1892) of cancer.


23 Jul 1892:

Electa I. Snyder, wife of William Snyder, died 19 Jul 1892, in Jonesboro, aged 21 years, 7

months, 15 days.

W.F. Coffman died 18 Jul 1892, at her residence in Anna, aged 67 years, 4 months, 1 day, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.


30 Jul 1892:

Henry Stokes, oldest son of Morgan Stokes, died 24 Jul 1892, at Mt. Pleasant, aged 32 years,

And was buried in McGinnis burying ground. He married the daughter of John Pickerell. He left two children.

John Kroger died of cancer of the stomach at the residence of Mrs. L. DeSanto at 528 23rd St.,

Rock Island, Illinois, aged 71 years, 3 months. He left three children: Emma Kroger, John Kroger of Jonesboro (or St. Louis), and George Kroger of Colorado.

Grace McNeeley, daughter of Tillman M. McNeeley, died 23 Jul 1892, in Centralia, aged 6

months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Joe Y. Snell, infant son of Joseph and Elizabeth Snell, died 23 Jul 1892, at the residence of Zadoc

Elms in Anna, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Albert Ross died Sunday (24 Jul 1892), of consumption, aged about 43 years, and was buried in I.O.O.F.

Cemetery in Dongola. He was born in Toronto, Canada. He left a wife and four children.

Willie Cuhl, son of R.G. and Zettie Cuhl, died 20 Jul 1892, aged 2 years, 2 months, 26 days, and was

buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

Harold D. Keith, son of W.L. and Ella Keith, died 21 Jul 1892, aged 7 months, and was buried in

I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

 

6 Aug 1892:

Susan Redwine died 30 Jul 1892, aged about 32 years, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She

married eight months ago. Her former husband, Mr. Mays, died two years ago. She left two children. She was a member of St. John’s German Reformed Church.

Mary J. Brown, wife of David Brown, died 29 Jul 1892, in Jonesboro, aged 52 (or 32) years, 3

months, 12 days.

Ford Benjamin Boyer, son of B.F. Boyer, died 29 Jul 1892, in Anna of diphtheria, aged 2 years,

7 months, 29 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.


13 Aug 1892:

Mrs. Wolie, “ancient lady” of Unity, Alexander County, died of heat stroke.

Sammie Craig, son of Jim Craig, of Unity, Alexander County, died 1 Aug 1892.

Infant child of Henry Worthington of Hodges Park, Alexander County, died 4 Aug 1892.

Hazel Alice Snyder, daughter of Charles A. Snyder, died 10 Aug 1892, aged 1 year, 5 days,

and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Ella Cruse, daughter of Henry Cruse living in the bottoms, seven or eight miles west of Jonesboro,

committed suicide by shooting herself, aged 14 years.

Kennett Toler, infant son of James I. and Olive L. Toler, died 8 Aug 1892, in Anna, aged 3

months, 14 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.


20 Aug 1892:

W.W. Elms died 18 Aug 1892, at the residence of his uncle, Zadoc Elms, aged 43 years, and was buried

in Anna Cemetery.

Henry Pippins died 11 Aug 1892, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He left one daughter and other

relatives.


27 Aug 1892

William Shirley of near Willard’s Landing, fell from a boat deck and drowned 19 Aug 1892, eight miles

below the landing, while crossing the river from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and was buried in Beech Grove Cemetery near Wolf Lake. He left a wife and two children. (See also 3 Sep 1892, issue.)

Louis Bross, son of Judge Bross of Cairo, Alexander County, died.

Abraham Cover died 24 Aug 1892, at Tunnel Hill, Johnson County, aged 67 years, and was buried in

Jonesboro Cemetery. He was formerly of Saratoga and was a Mexican War veteran.

Anna Allen, wife of Judge W.J. Allen, died Wednesday (24 Aug 1892) at Wequetonsing, Michigan.

Infant child of S.S. Thompson died 23 Aug 1892, aged 18 months.


3 Sep 1892:

Albert S. Wilber died 31 Aug 1892, at his residence in Dongola of consumption, aged 47 years, 6

months, 6 days. He was born 25 Feb 1845, in Onandaga County, New York, the son of Simon and Melissa (Welch) Wilber.

Magdalena Terpinitz died last Monday (29 Aug 1892) at her residence in Jonesboro, aged 56

years, 4 months, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

 

10 Sep 1892:

James Musgrave died 4 Sep 1892, at the residence of the Rev. J.W. Hunsaker in Anna, aged 84

years, 24 days.


17 Sep 1892:

George Krysher of Makanda, father of Albert Krysher, died 13 Sep 1892, and was buried in Evergreen

Cemetery. (See also 1 Oct 1892, issue.)

Augustus Kohler died 19 Sep 1892, at his residence in Cobden of heart failure, aged 39 years, 15

days, and was buried in Cobden Catholic Cemetery. He resided in Cobden over 20 years. He left a wife and family.

Albert Smith, son of Joseph Smith, died 10 Sep 1892, of membraneous croup, aged 4 years, 11

months, 21 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Sarah Keith died last Saturday (10 Sep 1892) of dropsy, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. She left

three children.


24 Sep 1892:

Thomas W. Halliday died in Cairo, Alexander County, last Sunday (18 Sep 1892).

Louis N. Ackerman died 7 Sep 1892, in Montgomery City, Missouri, aged 39 years, 11 months,

23 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was formerly of Cairo, Alexander County, and was editor of the Montgomery County Republican.

was the mother of Horace W. Clarke and the mother-in-law of E.T. Jeffrey.

Infant of John Alden died Thursday (22 Sep 1892) in Anna.

Mary McBride, widow of James McBride, died 16 Sep 1892, at the residence of James Fowley

in Cobden, aged 66 years, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.

8 Oct 1892:

Sarah Stone, widow of William Stone and daughter of Henry Rendleman, died 2 Oct 1892, at her

residence two miles from Alto Pass, aged 60 years, 25 days. She was born in Union County. Her husband died 12 years ago. She was a Methodist, but joined the Congregationalists. She left three daughters, two sons, five grandchildren, five brothers, and one sister. Her funeral was at Mt. Tabor Church.

Robert Johnston, son of John Johnston, died Tuesday (4 Oct 1892) in Dongola, aged 6 years.

Mrs. Simon Corzine died at her residence three miles north of Dongola, aged 31 years, 10 months, 23

days. She was born 4 Nov 1860. She was a member of Dongola Baptist Church. She left a husband and five children.

Mrs. Jasper Karraker died at her residence three miles east of Dongola, aged about 30 years. She left a

husband and five small children.

Infant child of William Ferrell died 3 Oct 1892, in Mounds Junction, Pulaski County, aged 1 year, 1

month, 10 days.

Love Oglesbee died at his residence in Belknap, Johnson County, aged about 25 years.

Nellie J. (Sumner) Harbough, wife of Harvey J. Harbough, died 1 Oct 1892, at her residence two

miles north of Cobden, aged 25 years, 7 months, 15 days, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery.


15 Oct 1892:

Child of A. Butler died Wednesday (12 Oct 1892) in Jonesboro.

Perminis Coleman died 12 Oct 1892, in Anna, aged 75 years, 5 months, 12 days, and was buried in Anna

Cemetery. He was born in Buckingham County, Virginia. He had lived in Anna since 1867. He had eight children; six survived him. J.W. Coleman Esq. was the oldest child.

William C. Sifford, son of Jackson Sifford, died 11 Oct 1892, at his residence three miles east of

Cobden, aged 33 years, 10 months, 3 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.


22 Oct 1892:

John W. Hess, second son of John Hess, fell from the train near Boskydell, Jackson County, and died.

He was born on the Hess farm in Union County 28 Dec 1857. He was graduated from Ewing College, Jackson County. He married on 27 Apr 1881, Eliza Emory. (See also 3 Dec 1892, issue.)

Caroline Coomes Brown, wife of C.C. Brown, died 14 Oct 1892, in Anna, aged 40 years, 2 months, 10

days. She left a husband and three children.

Alfred J. Russell died 13 Oct 1892, at his residence in Cobden, aged 48 years, 5 months, 2 days, and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery.


29 Oct 1892:

Cyrus Harreld died 24 Oct 1892, at his residence near Alto Pass of a paralytic stroke, aged 62 years, 7

months, 25 days, and was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was born 29 Mar 1820, on a farm near Alto Pass. He was an only son, but had three sisters. He married Amelia Tuthill in 1858 in Carbondale, Jackson County. He had five children; two died in infancy and one, James Harreld, preceded him in death by a few months. He was a member of the Congregational church in Alto Pass. (See also 5 Nov 1892, issue.)

Son of James E. Davis died Monday (24 Oct 1892) of diphtheria. Other of his children are also ill.

Daniel F. Sifford, son of D. Sifford, died 25 Oct 1892, aged 7 years, 3 months, 25 days.

Jasper Ord Hess, son of John W. and Ella Hess, died 22 Oct 1892, in Anna.

Eliza Abernathy died 20 Oct 1892, of consumption at Wolf Lake. She left three children.


5 Nov 1892:

Bessie G. Clark, daughter of G.H. and Maggie Clark, died 28 Oct 1892, aged 5 years, 11 months, 17

days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Child of Joe E. Davis of Cobden died last Monday (31 Oct 1892) of diphtheria.


12 Nov 1892:

Julia Ann Weiss, daughter of William Weiss, died 7 Nov 1892, in Jonesboro, aged 7 years, 28 days.

R. Sullivan, “the crazy Negro,” died 30 Oct 1892. He escaped from the hospital and was shot near Elco,

Alexander County, resisting arrest. Capt. I.N. Sperry, “another dangerous patient,” also escaped.


19 Nov 1892:

James G. Reves died at his residence five miles east of Dongola, aged about 30 years, and was buried in

Meisenheimer Cemetery. He left a wife and one child.

Child of Henry Smoot died 15 Nov 1892, aged about 2 years.

Grandma Batson died 7 Nov 1892, aged 71 years, 10 months, 15 days. She was born in Virginia. She

left a son and a daughter.

Sylvester Ussery, who lives a short distance from Jonesboro, died last Tuesday (15 Nov 1892), aged 40

years.


26 Nov 1892:

Mrs. Sidney Brown committed suicide at Elco, Alexander County, by taking strychnine last Saturday (19

Nov 1892). She was divorced from her husband, whom she married two or three years ago.

Margaret Hart, daughter of Aaron Hart, died 18 Nov 1892, of diphtheria, and was buried in Wetaug

Cemetery, Pulaski County.

Joseph Hart, son of Aaron Hart, died 20 Nov 1892, and was buried in Wetaug Cemetery, Pulaski

County.

Lewis Ketster died three miles east of Creal Springs, Williamson County.


3 Dec 1892:

Ransom S. “Pilot Ran” Sampson was shot and killed by May Sams, alias Kittie Keyser, at the Planters

House in Cairo, Alexander County. She also shot Sampson’s wife and attempted suicide, but failed. Sampson married Lizzie Speers of Hickman, Kentucky, two weeks ago. Sams was previously married to William Hoss a number of years ago, but they were divorced. She was released on $6,000 bail, which was posted by prominent citizens of Cairo. (See also 31 Dec 1892, issue) Kitty May Sams was acquitted of the murder of Rans Sampson in Cairo because of temporary insanity. The charges against her for the murder of Mrs. Mary Sampson were dismissed. (See also the 4 Mar 1893, and 21 Oct 1893, issue.) She killed herself in December 1898 (17 Dec 1898, issue).

Benjamin C. Pruett died 27 Nov 1892, of consumption. He left a wife.

Mrs. J.B. Collins, sister-in-law of Mrs. J. Richardson and aunt of Mollie Richardson of Dongola, died.

Her funeral was in Mound City, Pulaski County.

Daisy Margaret Buck, daughter of Ed F. and Lorena Buck, died 26 Nov 1892, in Cobden, of diphtheria,

aged 10 years, 11 months, 10 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Bowen Keith died 17 Nov 1892, at his residence in Jackson County, aged 60 years, and was buried in

Collins Cemetery. He was head of the GAR post. He left a wife, three sons, one sister, Lorinda Anderson, and two brothers, J.J. Keith of Alto Pass and Hamilton Keith of the far West.


10 Dec 1892:

J.A. Morrison died 29 Nov 1892, in Cobden, aged 70 years, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery.


17 Dec 1892:

James L. “Fay” Spann, son of Silas H. Spann of Alto Pass, died Thursday (15 Dec 1892) at his residence

in Alto Pass, from a fall in his barn, aged 47 years, 2 months, 29 days. He married Mollie Cox 13 years ago. He had five children living, the oldest being a 12-year-old son.

Solomon H. Sitter died, aged 72 years, 10 months, 27 days. His wife died a short time ago. He left four

children, Mrs. William J. Standard, Mrs. R.B. Hindman, Francis M. Sitter, and George W. Sitter. Both sons were school teachers.

Delia Winn, daughter of R.P. Winn, died Tuesday (13 Dec 1892) of diphtheria in Jonesboro, aged 7

years.

 

24 Dec 1892:

P.M. Park of Creal Springs, Williamson County, was murdered in St. Louis by a driver when Park

refused to pay a $2 fee which he considered an exorbitant fare. He left a wife and three children.

Baby of Simon Sanders died Tuesday (20 Dec 1892) in Carbondale, Jackson County, and was buried in

Evergreen Cemetery.


31 Dec 1892:

Orange Judd died 27 Dec 1892, in Chicago, Cook County, of Wetithoff’s disease, aged 70 years.

 

14 Jan 1893:

Grandma Douglas died Friday last week (6 Jan 1893) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hannibal

McElhany, of debility and old age, aged upwards to 80 years.

Dr. Thomas Miles Sams died last Monday (9 Jan 1893) in Tamaroa, aged about 75 years. He was born in

Union County a few miles south of Jonesboro and lived there until 30. He was a brother of Mrs. John Rinehart of Jonesboro, who with her sons, Henry Rinehart and Marshall Rinehart, attended the funeral.

Guy L. Whitacre, son of O.B. and Lizzie Whitacre, died 27 Dec 1892.

Catherine “Grandma” Albright died 7 Jan 1893, at Springville and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery.

She was the widow of Frederick Albright, a stone mason. She married 1st Mr. Costley and had one son, Jacob Costley of Dongola. By her second husband she had two sons and one daughter. She left one brother, Dan Davault, and two sisters, Mrs. John Fisher and Mrs. Michael Pickett.

Mellie Earle Rich, daughter of George D. and Hattie Rich, died 5 Jan 1893, of diphtheria, aged 5 years, 5

months, 21 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.


21 Jan 1893:

Edith Keller died 15 Jan 1893, after being shot through a window at her home six miles northeast of

Dongola Friday night, aged about 60 years. She was a widow and lived with four daughters, two of them widowed. The coroner’s jury determined she was shot by James Levi McIntire or Francis Settlemoir, who was actually aiming at one of her unmarried daughters.

Albert Wise drowned in Big Muddy River last Saturday (14 Jan 1893) near Frogge School and was

buried in Anna Cemetery. He was a young school teacher and was skating.

Philip Kamm died 18 Jan 1893, aged 27 years, 6 months, 28 days, and was buried in Ebenezer Cemetery

four miles south of Jonesboro. He was a carpenter and the only son of a widowed mother.


28 Jan 1893:

Dr. Richard O. Crandall died 20 Jan 1893 in his sleigh in La Porte, Ind.

Mrs. Emma Wooldridge Dougherty died at her home in Jonesboro of dropsy. She was a sister of Mrs.

George H. Smiley of Alton.

Ina Roselin Goodman, daughter of J.M. & Della Goodman, died 18 Jan 1893, south of Jonesboro of

diphtheria, aged 2 years.

John A. Blakely died 20 Jan 1893, at his home in Dongola and was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He

was born 18 Jan 1842, in Alabama, Tenn. He spent three years in the Civil War. He left a wife and six children.

James W. Owens died 19 Jan 1893, at his home one mile northeast of Dongola, aged 85 years, 1 month,

14 days, and was buried in Hinkle Cemetery. He was born 5 Dec 1807, in Charleston, S.C.

Louie Hindman died at the home of M.N. Heilig of consumption, aged 16 years, 2 months, 5 days, and

was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He was given away by his mother when small and was badly treated before he was taken in by the Heiligs.


4 Feb 1893:

Cora Sivia died 29 Jan 1893, at the home of her mother three and a half miles southeast of Anna, aged 25

years, 11 months, 14 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was the wife of William F. Sivia and the daughter of H.A. and Sarah Jones. She left two small children, a mother, and a sister.

Ed Brown died last week at Ocean Springs, Miss., of consumption. He was the son of Samuel Brown.

Mrs. Sarah Davis died in Springville of paralysis, aged 72 years, 7 months, 13 days, and was buried in

Union Cemetery. She was a Methodist.

Barbara Snyder died 26 Jan 1893, and was buried in Cobden Catholic Cemetery. She was the wife of

Jacob Snyder.

Mabel Russell died 28 Jan 1893, aged 4 years, 4 months, 14 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery

beside her father, A.J. Russell. She was the daughter of Emma Russell.


11 Feb 1893:

Elizabeth “Aunt Betsy” Lamer died 2 Feb 1893, at her home three miles north of Cobden, aged 67 years,

2 months, 11 days, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery. She was the daughter of David Sumner. She was the mother of Willis Lamer deceased, Walter S. Lamer, Mrs. George Black, and Mrs. John Brown.

William Penrod was shot three times and killed in Mound City, Pulaski County, Illinois, while resisting

arrest and was buried in Friendship Cemetery. He was formerly from Dongola and was a son of the late Barney Penrod and a brother of Milington Penrod. He left a family.

Mrs. Daniel Linn died the first of the week south of Jonesboro. She was the daughter of the late Caleb

Lyerly.


18 Feb 1893:

Mrs. Potts died the first of the week of consumption and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She was

born in Williamson County, Illinois, and moved to Alto Pass and then to Springville last fall. She left a husband, five children, two brothers, and one sister. She was a Methodist.

Anna C. Mattheis, wife of Gideon Mattheis, died 13 Feb 1893, at her home in Anna, aged 28 years, 7

months, 19 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

Susan “Grandma” Eddleman died 13 Feb 1893, at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. M.N. Heilig, near

Springville, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. She was a charter member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was born Susan Hess 15 Oct 1807, in Rowan Co., N.C., moved to Illinois when 13, joined St. John’s Church when 15, and married Joseph Eddleman when 20. She had 13 children. She left six sons and two daughters. One son was Jefferson Eddleman of DuQuoin. She was the last of a family of two brothers and six sisters.


25 Feb 1893:

Rachel Neff, wife of Peter Neff of Cairo, died Tuesday (21 Feb 1893) aged 52 years. She left a husband,

a daughter Effie Neff, and two stepsons.

Donnie Bryant, son of John Bryant, died 21 Feb 1893, of diphtheria, aged 4 years, 17 days.

Mrs. C. Benefiel died 17 Feb 1893, in Wolf Lake. She left a husband and several children.


4 Mar 1893:

Joseph C. Rymer died 26 Feb 1893, aged 43 years, and was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

He left a wife and eight children.

The daughter of Sheriff Wehrenberg of Pulaski County died from eating too many pickles.


18 Mar 1893:

Mrs. Morford died at her home in Dongola, aged 56 years, and was buried in the I.O.O.F Cemetery. She

left two sons and one daughter.

Nellie (Goodman) Damon was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was the daughter of Mrs. M. Goodman

and a sister of D.W. Goodman.


25 Mar 1893:

Cynthia Stout died Tuesday last week (14 Mar 1893) at the home of her son-in-law, Peter Clutts, aged 91

years. She had just celebrated her birthday about a week before. She was born in Tennessee, moved to Missouri, then to Sangamon County, then to Union County, where she had lived the last 60 years. She married when 17 in Sangamon County, Cooper Stout, who died in Water Valley 21 years ago. She left three sons, William J. Stout, Lorenzo D. Stout, Newton Stout, and three daughters, Rachel Ann Holland, Mrs. Peter Clutts, and Mrs. John F. Kerr. She left 186 descendants.

Grandma Schoettinger died 22 Mar 1893, at her home in Jonesboro of rheumatism of the heart, aged 73

years, 9 months, 24 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born in Carlsruh, Germany, and came to the U.S. 48 years ago. She resided in Jonesboro for the last 13 years. She left two children, Mrs. N. Reiss of Jonesboro and Lawrence Ward of St. Louis. She was a Catholic.

Robbie Bryant, son of John Bryant, died Thursday last week (16 Mar 1893) in Jonesboro of diphtheria.

Champion Frogge of Preston died recently of pneumonia, aged about 30 years. He left a family.

A daughter of Warren Stroud, of Mountain Glenn, died 15 Mar 1893, of diphtheria, aged 1 year.

John W. Stroud, brother of Jesse Stroud, died 20 Mar 1893, at his home near Alto Pass and was buried

in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was a Baptist. He left a wife and children.

John Martin Tracy died at the home of his brother-in-law, Parker Earle, in Ocean Springs, Miss., aged 48

years. He was formerly an artist in Cobden, had resided in New York for two years, and had recently returned to Cobden to live. He left a wife and three children.


1 Apr 1893:

Mrs. W.W. Sheffer died 24 Mar 1893, at her home three miles south of Dongola, aged 37 years. She left

a husband and eight children.

Joseph M. Settlemoir died 29 Mar 1893, of overdose of morphine, in Anna, aged 48 years, and was

buried in Brown Cemetery.


15 Apr 1893:

Albertus Winfield “Bert Harris” was killed by a train in Makanda last Sunday (9 Apr 1893).


22 Apr 1893:

Albert McKinney died 21 Apr 1893, of inflammation of the brain, aged about 30 years, and was buried in

Alto Pass Cemetery. He left a wife and two or three children.

James Durden died 16 Apr 1893, of dropsy, aged about 40 years. He left a wife and several children.

Leon Lewis, twin son of I.W. and the late Emma Lewis, died 15 Apr 1893, of congestion of the stomach,

aged nearly 11 years, and was buried beside his mother in Anna Cemetery. He left a brother, Loren Lewis.

Infant child of W.W. Sheffer died 21 Apr 1893.

Josephine Gertrude Hartman, daughter of J.S. Hartman, died 12 Apr 1893, of corditis in Makanda, and

was buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

David G. Brooks was found dead in his bed at the home of his mother, Mrs. N.G. Miller, Friday last

week (14 Apr 1893) of heart failure, aged 41 years and 14 days and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was the only son of the late Dr. James V. Brooks who died in 1872.


29 Apr 1893:

Mrs. Frank Lyerly died Sunday (23 Apr 1893). She was the daughter of David Rushing and left a

daughter and a husband.

Henry B. Flaugh died 24 Apr 1893, three miles southwest of Jonesboro of phthisis pulmonalis, aged 69

years, 11 months, 9 days. He was born in Union County in 1823 and married Rebecca D. Sams on 23 Feb 1847. He was in Capt. Hacker’s company during the Mexican War. He joined Jonesboro Baptist Church in the 1850s. He had eight daughters and two sons and left six daughters. Two of his daughters were Selena J. Chester and Ida Watkins (see also the 13 May 1893, issue).

Ida Lee Blevins, daughter of Charles and Nettie Blevins, died three miles east of Jonesboro on 23 Apr

1893, of gastro enteritis.

Mrs. J.P. Rimer died in Pulaski County of pneumonia and childbirth, aged 28 years, and was buried in St.

John’s Cemetery. She was the daughter of Samuel Dillow of near Springville. She was a Lutheran.

Edith M. Gibbs, wife of Harry W. Gibbs, died 24 Apr 1893, aged 25 years, 1 month, 23 days, and was

buried in Anna Cemetery.


6 May 1893:

Theron C. “Thed” Green was instantly killed at Danville in an accident at the stone yard, aged 23 years,

and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was the third son of Florence W. Green. His mother was unable to attend the funeral because she was in Chicago undergoing treatment for a disease.

John M. Toler died 1 May 1893, at his home two miles east of Anna. He was born in Wayne Co., N.C.,

16 Jul 1806, and came to Union County in 1829, settling in Stokes Precinct. In 1868 he moved to his farm near Anna. He married Mary Throgmorton, who was born in Kentucky in 1830 and died in 1866. He married in 1869 Mary Barker, who was born in Georgia. He had nine children and three survived him. Three sons died in the Civil War, Dr. S.E. Toler, John W. Toler, and Josiah Toler.


13 May 1893:

Oliver Alden died 7 May 1893, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was born in Plymouth, Mass., 7

Aug 1828, the son of John Alden, a soldier in the War of 1812. He married Sarah Tripp, the daughter of William and Frankie (Grammer) Tripp. His children were Abby wife of Z.T. Cook, Alice wife of H.C. Bouton, Ernest Alden, John Alden and Thomas Alden (twins), Oliver Alden, Betsy Alden, Robert Alden, Everett Alden, and Mary Alden.

Annetta Green, wife of Florence W. Green, died 10 May 1893, in Chicago, aged 45 years, 5 months, 16

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born 17 Jan 1865, in Jonesboro, the daughter of Daniel days. and Mary (Craver) Cover. She had eight children and seven survived her.

Wade Lingle, little son of John Lingle, died of inflammation of the brain.


20 May 1893:

Elmer Gurley, son of John Douglas and Jennie Gurley, died after his clothes caught fire last Monday (15

May 1893) in Makanda, aged 4 years.

Robert Ray Rendleman, the son of Robert and Cora Rendleman, died 15 May 1893, in Cobden, aged 1

year less 1 day, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.


27 May 1893:

Henry Winter died in Cairo last week, aged 67 years. He had lived in Cairo, Alexander County, since

1856.

Little son of John Dayvault died 24 May 1893, at the home of Frank Sheffer.

Nancy Morgan died of a stroke near Bald Knob, aged 50 years, and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery.



3 Jun 1893:

Infant child of Henry Morford of the lime kiln was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola last

Thursday (1 Jun 1893).

Maria Wagner was shot and killed by her husband, Warren Wagner, 22 May 1893.

Alice Henney, youngest child of William Henney, died in Murphysboro, Jackson County, aged 21 years,

and was buried Sunday (28 May 1893). She left a sister, Kate (Mrs. C.L. Westman) of Johnson County, and a brother, John Henney.


10 Jun 1893:

A boy was accidentally shot and killed in the eastern part of Union County 28 May 1893.

A Negro was taken from jail and lynched in Decatur last Saturday (3 Jun 1893).

Mulkey boy accidentally shot and killed his brother near Moscow 28 May 1893.


17 Jun 1893:

Frederic Johnson died 3 Jun 1893, at his home three and a half miles southeast of Dongola, aged 70

years, 8 months, 26 days, and was buried in Friendship Cemetery. He was a blacksmith and member of I.O.O.F. He was born in Hanover, Germany, 12 Nov 1822. He left a wife and six children. R. Johnson of Anna was his brother.


24 Jun 1893:

Infant child of Adam Schlanker, a son-in-law of Joseph Bauer, died of diphtheria at Bauer’s home

Wednesday (21 Jun 1893).


1 Jul 1893:

Ellen K. Lewis, wife of Judge Joshua Lewis, died 28 Jun 1893, at her home in Alto Pass, aged 71 years, 6

months, 28 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She was the mother of John C. Lewis

Infant son of Walter Lynch of Belleville died last Saturday (24 Jun 1893) and was buried in Anna

Cemetery. The funeral was at Mrs. John Richardson’s, the mother of Mrs. Lynch.


8 Jul 1893:

R.F. Queen died 30 Jun 1893, at his home in Jackson County of consumption, aged about 55 years, and

was buried near Makanda.

Thorvald Albertsen, nephew of C. Jessen, drowned in James’ Pond aged 18 years, and was buried in

Alto Pass Cemetery. He came to America from Denmark a month before. He was a Lutheran.

P.M. Hagler died Thursday last week ( 29 Jun 1893) in Alto Pass, aged 53 years, 5 months, 11 days and

was buried in Alto Pass Cemetery. He was born a few miles north of Alto Pass in Jackson County. He was in the Civil War and married E.T. Condon, daughter of the late James Condon. He had 11 sons and seven survived him. He was for many years the Alto Pass correspondent for the Jonesboro Gazette.


15 Jul 1893:

A Negro accused of murdering two girls named Ray, aged 8 years and 17 years, in Bardwell, Ky., was

captured in Sikeston, Mo., and taken back to Bardwell. He was lynched by 5,000 men and then his body was thrown on a bonfire.

James Jones was shot and killed by Henry Sidman at Simpson, Johnson County. Jones had earlier left

with another man’s wife and when she died sent her body home.

Freddie Sharpe drowned last Monday (10 Jul 1893) in Goodman ditch, aged 11 years. He fell in while

fishing. He was the only child of Mrs. Gregory who lived near the clay pit at Bluff Lake.

Robert Hamilton died at the Palmer house Tuesday (11 Jul 1893) and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He

was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and had been in the U.S. 25 years. He was a brick mason. He left a sister in New York and relatives in Scotland.

Mrs. Sarah J. Phillips died 10 Jul 1893, in Cobden, aged 86 years, 11 months, 20 days, and was buried in

the family burial ground five miles northeast of Centralia on the old homestead. She was the wife of Jonathon Phillips, a soldier in the Black Hawk and Seminole wars. She was the mother of Nancy E. Phillips of Cobden and Samuel Phillips and John Phillips of Centralia.


22 Jul 1893:

Mrs. Marcia Stansberry died 17 Jul 1893, at her home on East Poplar Street in Cobden, aged 22 years, 4

months, 7 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

John W. Marshall, brakeman on the Mobile & Ohio Railroad, was killed Wednesday (19 Jul 1893) in a

train collision, aged about 30 years. He was from Murphysboro, Jackson County, and left a wife and no children.

John A. Crawford died 2 Jul 1893, near Christopher, Franklin County, aged 91 years, 3 months, 22 days.

He was born in South Carolina 10 Mar 1802, and when 10 moved to Huntsville, Ala. He married Nancy Tucker of Nashville, Tenn., and moved to Franklin County, Illinois. He had nine sons and six daughters; six children were living: Andrew, Samuel H., John W., Christiana C., Margaret M., and Benjamin F. His wife died in 1869. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Samuel Landon, brother of R.B. Landon of Anna, died last Sunday (16 Jul 1893) in St. Louis, aged 48

years, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.

A son of Mrs. A. Hood of Dongola died 17 Jul 1893, at the home of Henry Sams, aged 2 years.


29 Jul 1893:

A Negro was run over by a train at Idlewild 15 miles south of Jonesboro on the M & O Wednesday (26

Jul 1893).

Both children of Mrs. Friezelle, whose husband was killed by lightning two or three years ago, died last

month of sore throat.

Mary Mathis, wife of Ben Mathis, died 24 Jul 1893, at her home near Alto Pass, and was buried in

Lamar Cemetery. She left a husband and several children.

Polly Ferrill died 21 Jul 1893, at the home of her son, T.W. Ferrill, in Cobden, aged 84 years, 4 months,

24 days, and was buried in a family cemetery.


5 Aug 1893:

Herbert S. Dubois died 27 Jul 1893, aged 26 years, 28 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Mrs. George W. Spiller died 29 Jul 1893, at her home and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Eddy Murray, the son of the late James Murray of Dongola and Unity, was killed by the M & O train

near Waterloo, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He left a widowed mother who was the daughter of the late Louis Misenhimer of Dongola.

Mrs. Ida Barnes died 28 Jul 1893, of consumption at Mountain Glen aged 18 years.

Elizabeth Peter, wife of Peter Peter, died 3 Aug 1893, of consumption, aged 58 years, 4 days, and was

buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was a sister of Wilhelm Weiss, George Weiss, and Philip Weiss. She left no children, but raised an orphaned nephew.


12 Aug 1893:

A. Wilson Lingle died 4 Aug 1893, at his home one and a half miles south of Cobden, aged 83 years, 8

months, 2 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.

J.E. Edwards, the son of John J. Edwards, was killed 22 Jul 1893, in a wreck at Dongola. The body was

identified by the father who said his son had left home three years ago.

Fred R. Ong died 4 Aug 1893, in Union City, Tenn., aged 23 years, 7 months, 6 days, and was buried in

I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola beside his mother. He was the nephew of Mrs. G.W. Coughanour. He left a father and a sister in Union City, Tenn.


19 Aug 1893:

Joe Bell “colored” died of heart failure in Makanda Sunday (13 Aug 1893). He had lived in Makanda

since the Civil War.

Philip Holman was shot and killed by Lt. Frank Parker, who was age 50 years, in self defense during a

meeting of the Clear Creek Baptist Association in Villa Ridge, Pulaski County, and was buried in Villa Ridge. He left a wife and 6-month-old child, but they were living with her father. Holman lived with and ran the farm of Mrs. days. Congers.

Little son of Mrs. Winters of Arkansas died in Springville, where they were visiting, of congestion of the

liver.

Charlie Hilton, son of John H. and Maria Hilton, died 9 Aug 1893, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.

Mrs. Jacob Casper died south of Jonesboro last week.


26 Aug 1893:

Verna Ardery of Creal Springs died Thursday (17 Aug 1893), aged 4 years, and was buried in Barth

Cemetery.

Mrs. Charles Roberts was killed by her husband in Craighead Co., Ark., in January 1892, aged 14 years.

He was raised in Anna and Jonesboro. They were married in December 1892 (?).

Viola E. Bame, wife of William Bame and daughter of Charles Goodman, died 21 Aug 1893, at her

home six miles east of Dongola, aged 18 years, 6 months, 21 days.

Infant child of William Parmley of Cobden died 22 Aug 1893.


2 Sep 1893:

Anna E. Mangold died 28 Aug 1893, at the home of her son, Willis Mangold, two miles east of Cobden,

aged 75 years, 11 months, 23 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She was also the mother of B.F. Mangold.


9 Sep 1893:

A cousin of J.B. Wilson, sheriff in Faulkner Co., Ark., was murdered by George Birmingham in 1881.


16 Sep 1893:

Col. John Wood, postmaster in Cairo, Alexander County, died Tuesday (12 Sep 1893) in Chicago and

was buried in Beechwood Cemetery. He was a Mason.


23 Sep 1893:

Ryde Rich, only son of George W. and Mary E. Rich, died 15 Sep 1893, aged 1 years, 3 months, and 8

days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.


30 Sep 1893:

Amalfus Rich, son of W.C. Rich Sr., died 24 Sep 1893, at the home of his uncle, James Guthrie, aged 35

years, 5 months, 25 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery.


7 Oct 1893:

Col. James Johnson died last Tuesday (3 Oct 1893) of apoplexy in Murphysboro, Jackson County. He

was the I.C.R.R. agent in Cairo, Alexander County.

Son of William Reed was killed in a harrowing accident in the bottoms the latter part of the week, aged

15 years, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Olive “Ollie” H. eldest daughter of O.H. & Elizabeth Baker of Jonesboro, died 3 Oct 1893, at Anna

Hospital, aged 26 years, 1 month, 24 days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery beside her sister Lucy. She left brothers. She was a Methodist. (See also 14 Oct 1893, issue.)

Minnie E. daughter of W.M. and Julia M. Fulenwider, died 28 Sep 1893, aged 20 years, 7 months, 11

days, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.

Elizabeth O’Danniel, widow of John O’Danniel, died 2 Oct 1893, at the home of her son-in-law, Capt.

J.P. Reese two miles north of Cobden, aged 77 years, 4 months, 26 days, and was buried in the family burying ground at the old homestead. She had one child, Mrs. J.P. Reese. She was the oldest born inhabitant of Jonesboro. (James Morgan was the oldest person born in Union County, according to the 21 Oct 1893, issue. Alto Pass claimed Joshua Lewis, 82, John S. Rendleman, 82, Johnny Smith, several years older than 82, and S.H. Spann, 83, according to the 28 Oct 1893, issue.)


14 Oct 1893:

James B. Guthrie died 7 Oct 1893, at his home in Cobden of heart failure, aged 64 years, 4 months, 23

days, and was buried in Guthrie Cemetery two miles north of Cobden on the old homestead.


21 Oct 1893:

William Brown McCartney died 15 Oct 1893, at his home in Wetaug, Pulaski County, aged 56 years.

He was a member of I.O.O.F. (see the 4 Nov 1893, issue.)

Grandma Rymer died 16 Oct 1893, at the home of her son-in-law, A. Burhauser.

Ophelia A. Keith, daughter of W.A. and Ella Keith, died 15 Oct 1893, in Dongola of congestion of lungs,

aged 4 years, 7 months, 18 days. Born 27 Feb 1889.

Mrs. Si Tripp, daughter of W.C. Rich Sr., died last week east of Anna, aged about 45 years. She was the

sister of Mrs. W.C. Moreland.

Mrs. Sarah C. Hunsaker, deaf and middle-aged, was struck by a Chicago & Texas train between

Reynolds and Hamburg crossing last Monday (16 Oct 1893)

Henry Casper died 15 Oct 1893, at his home two miles east of Cobden, aged 78 years, 6 months, 19 days,

and was buried in Rich Cemetery beside his wife.


28 Oct 1893:

An unknown man died three weeks ago and was found on the tracks at Weaver Hill.

Mrs. Mary “Aunt Polly” Davis died 22 Oct 1893, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Sharp, 12

miles northeast of Anna, aged 84 years. She married Hiram Campbell and had several children of whom three survived her, John Campbell in the West, James Campbell in Nebraska, and Mrs. Nancy Miller of Tunnel Hill. She married 2nd George Davis and had one child, Mrs. William Sharp.

Elizabeth A. Casper, widow of Peter Casper, died 24 Oct 1893, at the home of her son-in-law, J.H.

Appel two miles north of Anna, aged 65 years, 9 months, 25 days, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. She had 10 children, of whom seven were living, Walter Casper of Burnside, Mrs. America Ussery of Elco, S.D. Casper of Springfield, Mo., Mrs. Addie Appel, Lynn Casper, Oscar Casper of Anna, and John Casper of Peoria.


11 Nov 1893:

Miss Nancy Faggott died 7 Nov 1893, in Jonesboro of cancer of the stomach, aged 75 years, and was

buried in Kimmel Cemetery west of Jonesboro. She was born on the Lewis farm two miles west of Jonesboro. She was crippled when 13 by sickness. Her mother died in 1832, her father died in the early 1850s, and her sister died in California a year ago. She was a Baptist and distantly related to the Grears and Misenhimers.

Samuel Spring died 6 Nov 1893, at his home in Cobden, aged 68 years, 9 months, 23 days, and was

buried in Cobden Cemetery. He was born in Massachusetts and when 18 settled in Preston. In 1867 he moved to Cobden. He left a wife, four grown sons, and daughters.

James F. Hamilton died 5 Nov 1893, three and a half miles north of Cobden, aged 26 years, 6 months, 27

days, and was buried in Toledo Church Cemetery.

Cornelius “Wiley” Anderson died 4 Nov 1893, on the old homestead three miles north of Cobden, aged

about 75 years, and was buried in Limestone Cemetery.


18 Nov 1893:

Mrs. Carter, widow of the Rev. Carter, died 18 Nov 1893, six miles northeast of Dongola.

Mrs. Calvin Casper, sister of Miss Annie Beggs of St. Louis, died 14 Nov 1893, at her home five miles

east of Dongola.

Dolph John’s, son of File John’s, died 12 Nov 1893, in Mountain Glenn, aged 13 years, 5 months.

Ellen B. Stearns died 8 Nov 1893, in Jonesboro, aged 72 years. She was the mother of Mrs. M.J. Frick,

Mrs. E.T. Wright, Mrs. Maude Crandell, and Mr. W.B. Nicholson.

John Flanigan Brown committed suicide Friday (10 Nov 1893) by drowning in a creek near Dugan’s

sawmill 10 miles south of Jonesboro, aged 29 years. He was delirious from typhoid fever. He left a wife, child, and stepmother.

Elizabeth Ferrill died 8 Nov 1893, three miles north of Cobden, aged 90 years, 1 month, and 11 days.

She was the oldest living person in Cobden Township. She was born in Tennessee and came to Illinois in 1819. She was a member of Toledo Christian Church. She was the mother of George W. Ferrill deceased, Franklin Ferrill, Henry Ferrill, and three daughters who survived.


25 Nov 1893:

Hattie C. Agnew, wide of Dr. A.B. Agnew, died 12 Nov 1893, in Samoth of angina pectoris.

T. William Littleton died in Centralia and was buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. He was the father-in-law

of Harris Rendleman, of two miles south of Cobden.

Susanna (Lookinbee) Rymer died 17 Nov 1893, of cancer and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She

was born 22 Apr 1828, in North Carolina and came to Union County when 6. She married on 3 Mar 1850, Capt. Jeremiah Rymer, who died 3 Jun 1889. She had six children, William, Mary, Hattie, Kate, Clara, Flora (Mrs. J.O. Storm).

Allie Clifton, daughter of George and Dora Clifton, died 9 Nov 1893, aged nearly 3 years.

John Cope, stepson of Henry Coffman, died 19 Nov 1893, in Dongola, aged about 19 years.

Sarah Hutton, wife of the Rev. R.W. Hutton, died 18 Nov 1893, six miles east of Dongola, aged 49

years, 6 months, 28 days, and was buried in Friendship Cemetery. She was born 9 Apr 1844. She had six children of whom three died in infancy. The Rev. R.W. Hutton was the son of Daniel W. Hutton, a pioneer of Union County.


2 Dec 1893:

Ellen D. Willard, wife of Charles M. Willard, died 27 Nov 1893, at her home in Anna, aged 63 years, 8

months, 20 days, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. She was the daughter of Russell and Damiaetta P. Tuthill who came to Illinois from Vermont in 1863. She was born February 1830 in Vergennes, Jackson County, Illinois, and married in Nov 1853 Charles M. Willard. They lived in Jonesboro until 1860 when they moved to Anna.

Mrs. Joe Bigler died 16 Nov 1893, in Cairo, Alexander County, during surgery.

Joseph “Uncle Joe” Rinehart died 25 Nov 1893, at the home of his son, Thomas Rinehart, the

undertaker in Dongola, aged 83 years, 3 months, 13 days. He was born 12 Aug 1813, in Rowan Co., N.C., and came to Union County in 1823. He married Lydia Barnhart and had six children, two of whom survived him, Thomas and Levi Rinehart. He was also the grandfather of Mrs. J.W. Wright of Piggot, Ark.

Ida J. Rollers died northeast of Dongola aged 11 years, 3 months, 26 days, and was buried in Christian

Chapel Cemetery.


9 Dec 1893:

William E. Toler died 3 Nov 1893, in Kankakee of consumption, aged 43 years, 3 months, 6 days. He

married Anna Johnson of Jonesboro.


16 Dec 1893:

Elizabeth Tate died 7 Dec 1893, at the home of her son, James Tate, one and a half miles northeast of

Cobden, aged 74 years, 8 months, 24 days, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. She was also the mother of Tobe Tate Beard of Anna.


23 Dec 1893:

Russell Henry Anderson, son of B.H. & L.C. Anderson, died 18 Dec 1893, aged 1 year and 9 days, and

was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola.

Jacob Z. Dickerson died this week of consumption in Makanda.

Mary E. Sheppard, wife of Joseph Sheppard, died this week of consumption in Makanda.

Irvin Leeright, oldest son of John Leeright, died this week of consumption in Makanda.

James Walton Wiley died of consumption in Makanda.

Asa David Pleasants died last Sunday (17 Dec 1893) of pneumonia at his home halfway between

Makanda and Boskydell. He left a wife and five children.

Infant son of Matt Winstead died at Limestone last Sunday (17 Dec 1893).

Simon Carter died 15 Dec 1893, at the home of his son, Elder S.L. Carter, in Dongola, aged 75 years, 9

months, 6 days, and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He came from North Carolina a few months ago to live with his son.

Howard S. Reese, son of Willis A. and Mary T. Reese of Durango, Colo., died 20 Dec 1893, at the home

of his grandfather, J.P. Reese, aged 2 years, 3 months, 10 days.

Christian Joram died 16 Dec 1893, in Cobden, aged 40 years, 1 month, 12 days, and was buried in

Cobden Cemetery.

Sarah Blevins, widow of Oliver Blevins, died 17 Dec 1893, at her home two miles west of Jonesboro,

aged 64 years, and was buried in Tripp Cemetery. She left one son, Charles Blevins.


30 Dec 1893:

Job Hardin died last Saturday (23 Dec 1893). He collapsed on the I.C.R.R. tracks walking from Wetaug

to Dongola.

Peter Neff died Thursday (28 Dec 1893) in Cairo, Alexander County. He left relatives in Jonesboro.

 

6 Jan 1894:

Charles M. Willard died 30 Dec 1893, at his home in Anna and was buried in Anna Cemetery. He was

born 17 Apr 1815, in Sherbrook, Canada, the son of William R. and Eleanor (Mann) Willard. At aged 21 he came to Jonesboro, but in 1849 went to California, where he stayed 22 months. He married in 1853 Ellen days. Tuthill, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1830. Some of his heirs mentioned in his will were H.P. Tuthill, his brother-in-law; Mrs. Ella E. Williford, his niece; Mabel Willard, his grandniece; Charles M. Willard of Elgin and Walter S. Willard, his nephews; Dannietta Tuthill, his mother-in-law; and Laura M. Tuthill, his sister-in-law.

Martha (Williams) McClure, the wife of Major S.M.P. McClure, died 31 Dec 1893, at her home in

Wheatland, aged 52 years, 7 months, 1 day, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. She was born 30 Apr 1841, in Tennessee and came to Jonesboro when 1 year old. Her father built the Williams Hotel in Jonesboro. She married in 1864 S.P.M. McClure. She left three daughters. She was a sister of George W. Williams of Chicago. (See also the 13 Jan 1894, issue.)

George Peeler died 20 Dec 1893, at his home six miles east of Dongola, aged 27 years, 7 months, 6 days,

and was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Dongola. He left a wife. He was the son of the late P.R. Peeler and a son-in-law of Harrison Anderson.
