31 Jan 1880: Charles Elkins, of Buncombe, Johnson County, aged 16 years, was killed trying to board a moving train last Thursday (29 Jan 1880). (See also 7 Feb 1880, issue.)
7 Feb 1880: Charles H. Hardin was hanged at St. Francois, Mo., 23 Jan 1880, for the 27 Oct 1879, murder at Hog Eye, three miles east of Iron Mountain, Mo., of Robert Ferguson, an old resident of Jonesboro. (See also 14 Feb 1880, issue.) Michael Ryan, aged 23 years, died at the insane asylum in Anna 3 Jan 1880. George W. Ripley, aged 48 years, died at the insane asylum in Anna 8 Jan 1880. Elizabeth Joiner, of Preston, aged 37 years, died 1 Jan 1880.
14 Feb 1880: Infant of W.F. Underwood, of Alto Pass, died of croup 2 Feb 1880. Wife of William Lilly, of Alto Pass, died of Rose cancer 9 Feb 1880. The Rev. Bernard Reeves, of Carbondale, Jackson County, died Sunday morning (8 Feb 1880). Unknown man was murdered on the tracks of the Illinois Central Railroad in Dongola Saturday (7 Feb 1880). Those accused, Ewing Sessions, Riley Dale, William Walker, Thomas Davis, Albert S. Wilbur, John Scott and Simon Aden, were found not guilty. (See also 21 Feb 1880, and 10 Sep 1881, issues.)
21 Feb 1880: Mary Alice Shipley, wife of James M. Shipley and daughter of Col. A.J. Nimmo, died at her residence in Anna of rheumatism of the heart 14 Feb 1880, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Nathan Sams, of Alexander County, formerly of Union County, died last week.
28 Feb 1880: Wife of M. Clemens, of Cobden, aged 71 years, died Monday night (23 Feb 1880), and was buried in Cobden Catholic Cemetery. Melissa A. Cover, wife of John R. Cover, aged 26 years, 3 months, died in Anna 25 Feb 1880, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Tressler, president of Lutheran College in Carthage, died 21 Feb 1880.
6 Mar 1880: John Taylor, son of John Taylor Sr., of Dongola, aged 9 months, died 25 Feb 1880, and was buried in Dongola Odd Fellows Cemetery. Sarah Magee, wife of Dr. Henry Magee and daughter of Henry Taylor, of Alto Pass, born near Smithville, Tenn., aged 47 years, 11 months, 18 days, died of pneumonia and asthma 29 Feb 1880, and was buried one mile west of Alto Pass.
13 Mar 1880: Margaret E. Lingle, widow of D. Lingle Sr., of Dongola, born in Charleston, Rowan Co., N.C., aged 89 years, died 8 Mar 1880. Watson Stokes, son of W.P. Stokes, aged 20 years, died of pneumonia east of Anna 6 Mar 1880. Mary Otrich, wife of Charles L. Otrich and daughter of T.J. McClure, of Anna, died of pneumonia 10 Mar 1880. (See also 20 Mar 1880, issue.) Eliza J. Dougherty, wife of M.M. McClure and daughter of Hezekiah and Susannah Wilcox, born 26 Jul 1837, in Dyer Co., Tenn., died of pneumonia 12 Mar 1880. Walker, widow of John Walker, born in Staffager Co., England, aged 62 years, 18 days, died of typhoid pneumonia two and a half miles southwest of Jonesboro 6 Mar 1880. (See also 20 Mar 1880, issue.) Frank Morris, of Oconee, Shelby County, was caught in machinery and killed. George Strickner, of Peru, was thrown from a wagon and killed 2 Mar 1880. Malvern McClure, aged 30 years, shot himself at Carrollton Sunday morning (7 Mar 1880). H.P. Rundel, aged 85 years, died at Upper Alton, Madison County, 26 Feb 1880.
20 Mar 1880: Lucy E. (Houghland) Huston, widow of David Huston, of Alto Pass, aged 41 years, died of typhoid pneumonia 13 Mar 1880. Infant son of James Hileman, of Anna, died last week. Allan Vaughn, of Jonesboro, died of typhoid pneumonia Wednesday (17 Mar 1880). Son of John Simms, of Rockwell, LaSalle County, fell into a well and drowned 8 Mar 1880. Mrs. Mary Cunningham, aged 86 years, died at DeCatur a few days ago. She settled in Morgan County in 1825. J.J. Fields was shot by a mob in jail in Winchester, Scott County.
27 Mar 1880: Esther Harris, daughter of C.P. and P. Harris, of Cobden, aged 2 years, 1 month, 28 days, died of pneumonia 21 Mar 1880. Thomas Walsh, of Cobden, was killed in a train accident Monday (22 Mar 1880). Jacob Albright, of Mill Creek, aged 46 years, 3 months, 5 days, died Saturday (20 Mar 1880), and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County.
3 Apr 1880: Eveline Clark, wife of Marshall Clark, of Cobden, aged 70 years, 9 months, 2 days, died 18 Mar 1880. Miss Maria Clark, sister of Marshall Clark, born in Westminster, West Vermont, aged 70 years, 3 months, 8 days, died 27 Mar 1880. Eva Ione Lence, infant daughter of W.C. and Luella Lence, died last Saturday (27 Mar 1880)
10 Apr 1880: James Garret Sublett, aged 53 years, died of pneumonia 28 Mar 1880. Mrs. Mary Gillis committed suicide by poisoning near Salem, Sunday (4 Apr 1880). Son of William Davis, aged 12 years, was run over by an empty coal train at Braidwood 29 Mar 1880. Dr. Benjamin F. Capps, of Illiopolis, died of erysipelas a few days ago.
17 Apr 1880: Cora G. Mangum, infant daughter of Dr. J.W. and L.E. Mangum, died 14 Apr 1880. John M. McIntyre, of Stokes Precinct, born in Tennessee, aged about 51 years, was shot in the head and had his throat cut. He was found in the woods Thursday (15 Apr 1880).
24 Apr 1880: Sophia Rhymer, wife of Charles Rhymer, of Dongola, aged 26 years, died 7 Apr 1880, and was buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Pulaski County.
1 May 1880: Henry Clay Hacker, of Jonesboro, son of John S. Hacker, born 30 Mar 1824, died 24 Apr 1880, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. He was a soldier in the Mexican War. Mrs. John Scott, of Dongola, died of consumption 28 Apr 1880. Margaret Penninger, widow of Mathias Penninger, of Anna, born 11 May 1796, in Rowan Co., N.C., died 26 Apr 1880, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. Elder T. Clay, aged 63 years, died at Dongola 24 Apr 1880, and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. (See also 8 May 1880, issue.)
8 May 1880: A German "tramp" died in Jonesboro Saturday morning (1 May 1880).
15 May 1880: George Johnson, of Makanda, died of measles last week. Emma Roberts, daughter of William and Melvina Roberts, of Anna, aged 4 years, 4 months, 20 days, died 7 May 1880. Dr. F. Kendall, of Goreville, Johnson County, born in 1850, in Richland Co., Ohio, died of gastrolgia 5 May 1880, and was buried in Rhodes Cemetery in Union County. George "Mike" Barnhardt died three miles north of Jonesboro Friday (14 May 1880), and was buried at the German settlement south of Jonesboro. Dollie Jones, son of A.P. and Nannie Jones, of Jonesboro, aged 3 years, 5 months, died 11 May 1880.
21 May 1880: Samuel McClure, infant son of Capt. Samuel M.P. and Martha McClure, aged 13 months, 18 days, died of scarlet fever 19 May 1880. (See also 29 May 1880, issue.)
29 May 1880: Wiley Mowery, of Mill Creek, brother of E. Mowery, aged 50 years, died 22 May 1880, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. Mary P. McClaran, only child of J.R. and Caroline McClaran, of Ullin, Pulaski County, aged 14 years, died 6 May 1880. (See also 5 Jun 1880, issue.)
5 Jun 1880: Mary Maud Nusbaum, daughter of John Leroy and Mary J. Nusbaum, aged 1 year, 10 month, 18 days, died 31 May 1880.

3 Jul 1880: David L. Phillips, of Springfield, son of William Phillips, born 28 Oct 1823, in Williamson County, died 19 Jun 1880. Beasley child died last Friday (25 Jun 1880). Ida Weiss, infant daughter of Wilhelm and Kate Weiss, died Thursday morning (1 Jul 1880). Wesley Davidson, son of Wiley J. Davidson, aged 55 years, drowned Thursday night (1 Jul 1880). 17 Jul 1880: Noel N. Karraker, son of W.J. and M.L. Karraker, of Dongola, aged 1 year, 3 months, 22 days, died 9 Jul 1880. Mrs. Amanda Foley, of Foreman, formerly of Dongola, was buried in Dongola IOOF Cemetery Monday (12 Jul 1880).
24 Jul 1880: Frank Van Antwerp, son of Major Van Antwerp, aged 20 years, died of sciatic rheumatism at San Antonio, Texas, 9 Jul 1880, and was buried in Jackson, Mich. William DeMott, of Oroville, Calif., died.
31 Jul 1880: Emily Costly, wife of Jacob Costly, of Dongola, died 24 Jul 1880, and was buried at Union Schoolhouse. Christina Haldeman, wife of D.C.L. Haldeman, of Ridge Precinct, Jackson County, aged 58 years, died of measles 22 Jul 1880. Ella Higgins, wife of Horace M. Higgins, daughter of Leo and Augusta Tarleton, sister of Mrs. H.R. Buckingham of Alto Pass, born 21 May 1854, in Lexington, Ky., died at her residence on St. John’s River near Walaka, Fla., 8 Jul 1880. Elizabeth Fettinger, adopted daughter of J.E. and Marie Terpinitz, aged 10 months, 7 days, died 26 Jul 1880. Fannie Gertrude Sprecher, 2nd daughter of the Rev. D. and H.F. Sprecher, of Richview, born 22 Jul 1856, aged 23 years, 11 months, 22 days, died of congestion of the brain 14 Jul 1880. Joseph Hunsaker, of two miles north of Mill Creek, aged 45 years, was thrown off a bridge at Jonesboro by his horse which then fell on top of him and killed him Tuesday evening (27 Jul 1880), and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. 7 Aug 1880: Henry Newkirk, of Cobden, drowned Sunday evening (1 Aug 1880). Ad. Dillow, of Anna, died after wrestling with Harley Robinson 3 Aug 1880.

Campbell Carter, of Dongola, died last week. Thomas W. Hawkins, of Alto Pass, was shot and killed by John Collins Thursday (26 Aug 1880), and was buried in Cobden Cemetery. 4 Sep 1880: Mrs. Lydia (Schwartz) Harreld, widow of James Harreld and mother of Cyrus Harreld of Alto Pass, born 12 Nov 1806, in Somerset Co., Pa., died 11 Aug 1880. She came to Illinois in 1811.
11 Sep 1880: Mrs. E. Leming, of Cobden, died 3 Sep 1880. William Stone, of four miles west of Cobden, born 6 Jan 1820, in Livingston Co., Ky., aged 60 years, died 7 Sep 1880, and was buried at Tabor Cemetery. (See also 18 Sep 1880, issue.) John Alvin Hunsaker, son of John E. Hunsaker, of Vienna, Johnson County, died.
18 Sep 1880: Lucella Hardin, eldest daughter of Louis T. Hardin, of Cobden, died of typhoid fever 9 Sep 1880, and was buried in Toledo Cemetery.
25 Sep 1880: Lafayette Suggs fell over a bluff six miles east of Dongola near the farm of Daniel Keller and was killed. Florence Menees, son of J.T. Menees, of Anna, aged 1 year, 3 months, 27 days, died 16 Sep 1880.
2 Oct 1880: Moses Beaver, of Dongola, formerly of Rowan Co., N.C., aged 66 years, 6 months, died of dropsy 22 Sep 1880. Only child of Louis Dewese, of Cobden, died of cholera infantum 24 Sep 1880.
9 Oct 1880: Edward Woods, son of Mrs. L.P. Wilcox, aged 29 years, drowned near Mound City, Pulaski County, last Friday (1 Oct 1880).
16 Oct 1880: Martha Broadway, wife of M.D.L. Broadway, of Cobden, aged 46 years, 1 month, 20 days, died 8 Oct 1880. Theodore Morrison, son of J.A. 6 Nov 1880: Alfred Merrell Putnam, born 27 Nov 1834, in Andovar, Mass., died 22 Oct 1880, Minneapolis, Minn., and was buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. Charles Howe died in explosion in a coal mine 28 Oct 1880.
13 Nov 1880: Adam Casper, born in North Carolina, aged about 54 years, died of pneumonia at residence three miles north of Dongola 6 Nov 1880. Charley Murray, son of James, of Mill Creek, aged 2 years, died last Saturday (6 Nov 1880). Matthew Stokes, son of John Stokes and brother of John Stokes, Evan Stokes, Allen Stokes, Thomas Stokes, Alfred Stokes and James Stokes, aged 71 years, died at his residence near Mt. Mr. Sande_en, fireman for ICCR, was killed in a train accident a few miles north of Cobden Friday (21 Jan 1881). Lizzie Clara Hileman, infant daughter of Jerome Hileman, aged 1 month, 11 days, died 14 Jan 1881, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. Wife of Martin Heater, of Mill Creek, died 17 Jan 1881. Son of Charles Johnson, aged 2 years, died of croup Friday night (21 Jan 1881).
29 Jan 1881: William H. Maples, son-in-law of R.J. Johnson, was killed in a train accident at Carbondale, Jackson County, Wednesday night ( 26 Jan 1881). Judge Michael Bame, son of Samuel Bame, born 24 Nov 1837, in North Carolina, died at his residence in Dongola last Tuesday (25 Jan 1881). He came to Union County in 1851. 5 Feb 1881: Nannie (Hunsaker) Watson, wife of John Watson Jr., died at the residence of Jesse Watson in Makanda of thrombosis of pulmonary arteries last Saturday (29 Jan 1881), and was buried in Rhodes Cemetery.
12 Feb 1881: Lucinda C. Mangrum, wife of Dr. J.W. Mangrum, of Alto Pass, born in Union County, aged 25 years, died 3 Feb 1881, and was buried in Collins Graveyard. (See also 5 Feb 1881, issue.) 19 Feb 1881: Wife of Jack Hoffman, of Cobden, died. Child of James Brooks died of measles and pneumonia 16 Feb 1881. Frank Bismarck Nordling, son of C. Nordling, aged 7 years, 6 months, 16 days, died of diptheric croup in Anna 16 Feb 1881, and was buried in Casper Cemetery.
26 Feb 1881: C.W. Goyer, brother of Mrs. Ben M. Hunsaker, died at Memphis, Tenn., 22 Feb 1881. Samuel Kratzinger, brakeman for ICCR, youngest son of William Kratzinger of Cave Spring southwest of Jonesboro, aged 20 years, was run over by train at Decatur and died Thursday night (24 Feb 1881). (See also 5 Mar 1881, issue.) Johnnie Sims, youngest son of A.W. Sims, of Jonesboro, died of diptheria and measles 23 Feb 1881. James Baggs died of typhoid pneumonia with measles 23 Feb 1881. William Frederick Nordling, youngest child of Chris Nordling, aged 2 years, 6 months, 28 days, died of paralysis from diptheria 24 Feb 1881, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Wife of W.T. Littleton, of Cobden, died of inflamatory rheumatism 22 Feb 1881. Wife of James Anthony, of Cobden, died 18 Feb 1881.
5 Mar 1881: Arthur Mackey, formerly of Anna, aged 66 years, died at home in Chicago from effects of surgery, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery.
12 Mar 1881: George Hunsaker, father of Mrs. D.H. Rendleman Sr., of half mile north of Jonesboro, aged 96 years, died in Knox Co., Mo., 3 Feb 1881. Elijah Humphrey, brother of Mrs. G.W. Harris of Kaolin, aged 62 years, 1 day, died at Smithville, Monroe Co., Ind., 14 Feb 1881. Joseph Massey, aged 21 years, died in Anna of measles Saturday night (5 Mar 1881). David McGill, of near Cottage Home, Williamson County, died. Sarah M. Palmer, formerly of Anna, aged 80 years, died at the residence of her son, George W. Palmer, of Pomona Ridge, Jackson County, last Thursday (10 Mar 1881).

Robinson/Robert Buckingham, of Alto Pass, husband of Louise (Hahn) Buckingham, born in Clermont Co., Ohio, aged 48 years, 4 months, 11 days, died at his residence half mile from Alto Pass 7 Apr 1881, and was buried in Cobden. (See also 16 Apr 1881, and 30 Apr 1881, issues.) William Beggs died of measles at Dongola 1 Apr 1881. Son of A.S. Wilbert died of measles at Dongola 1 Apr 1881. Child of W.T. Freeze died of measles at Dongola 3 Apr 1881.
16 Apr 1881: Silas C. Crandall, of Richmond, R.I., died 8 Apr 1881. Mrs. Lucinda Axley, aged about 30 years, died of pneumonia at her residence six miles west of Alto Pass 9 Apr 1881. Mr. C.W. Whitlock, of Cairo, Alexander County, formerly of Jonesboro, died 7 Apr 1881, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. Frank Vader died at Dongola of cerebro spinal meningitis 13 Apr 1881. His marriage was reported last week. John C. Sharp, aged 46 years, 6 months, 14 days, died at his residence in Anna 8 Apr 1881. Carty Eastman, son of H.T. Eastman, of Anna, aged 28 years, 14 days, died 7 Apr 1881.
23 Apr 1881: Widow of Gen. Jacob Fry, mother of Gen. James B. Fry, died at her residence eight miles north of Jerseyville last Monday, and was buried in Springfield. Child of Green Mowery, of Springville, died of measles and fever, and was buried last week. The entire family has been sick. Mrs. M.J. Toler died. N. Ferkle, patient at insane asylum in Anna, burned to death in fire that destroyed the north wing last Monday night (18 Apr 1881) Miss Ida R. Crane, aged 18 years, 4 months, 5 days, died of dropsy of heart. John W. Hurst, of Cobden, aged 24 years, 3 months, 20 days, died of pneumonia 15 Apr 1881.
30 Apr 1881: George Judy, formerly of Cobden, brakeman for Illinois Central Railroad, was killed in train accident at Clifton, and was buried in Cobden last Thursday (21 Apr 1881)
7 May 1881: Mrs. Sophiah Deardorf, mother of Lizzie and Sarah, aged 59 years, 2 months, 5 days, died at Cobden 28 Apr 1881, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. Sarah Lentz, mother of Sophiah Deardorf, aged 78 years, 7 days, born 24 Oct 1802, died 2 Nov 1880. Her funeral was preached 1 May 1881, at Casper (Union) Church. Edward C. Page, aged about 21 years, died at the European Hotel in Anna of consumption 2 May 1881.
14 May 1881: Willis Willard, son of Jonathon Willard, father of Elijah A. Willard, Willis J. Willard, Charles F.Willard, Simon Willard and Mary A. Goodman, born 20 Mar 1805, in Windsor Co., Vt., aged 77 years, died at his residence in Jonesboro Thursday (12 May 1881). (See also 21 May 1881, issue.) A.S. McDaniels, aged about 50 years, died of consumption at Cobden 8 May 1881. John Harris, aged about 30 years, died at Cobden of consumption 6 May 1881. Jacob Miller, born 22 Sep 1805, in Rowan Co., N.C., aged 75 years, 7 months, 14 days, died 6 May 1881, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery. He came to Illinois when 12 with first party of emigrants from North Carolina in 1817.

11 Jun 1881: Esther Mowery, wife of Philip Mowery, died at Mill Creek 5 Jun 1881. Jefferson Miller, born 22 Apr 1858, aged 23 years, 1 month, 8 days, died 30 May 1881. Child of the Rev. E. Miller, died near Springville 1 Jun 1881. John Lence, aged 50 years, formerly of Jonesboro, died at his residence in the Mississippi Bottoms of malarial fever 11 Jun 1881. Daniel Williams, of Arkansas, aged 70 years, died at residence of his daughter, Mrs. Jasper McElhaney, in Jonesboro of consumption 6 Jun 1881.
18 Jun 1881: Warren Dillow, formerly of Dongola, waiter on a river boat, jumped overboard near Memphis, Tenn., and drowned 3 Jun 1881. William Tripp, aged 66 years, died Monday (13 Jun 1881).
2 Jul 1881: J.J. Dougan, son of J.A.Dougan and S.J. Dougan, of Mill Creek, died 26 Jun 1881. Widow of John Lence and daughter of Dr. S.S. Condon, died Saturday evening (25 Jun 1881).
9 Jul 1881: Son of Mrs. K. Sands, of a few miles west of Alto Pass, drowned swimming in a creek last week. A girl, aged 5 years, died near New Hope Church at Alto Pass where the family, moving from Arkansas to Shelby County, had camped, Saturday (2 Jul 1881). J.R. Love committed suicide at Cobden 7 Jul 1881. He left a note to his wife, saying, "This will divorce you from me." H.S. Finley, of Cobden, aged 74 years, died 5 Jul 1881 of heart disease.
16 Jul 1881: James E. Brasenell, aged about 31-35 years, died at Cobden suddenly in a fit 10 Jul 1881, and was buried in Anna Cemetery. N.C. Ferguson, aged 71 years, 6 months, died at his residence four miles west of Dongola 29 Jun 1881. He came to Union County 33 years ago. Orphan child, aged 2 years, died at C. Penrod’s at Dongola. Samuel Hackler, aged about 40 years, died at Anna of congestive chills 10 Jul 1881. Kinney child died 10 Jul 1881.
23 Jul 1881: L.H. Brooks, widow of B.W. Brooks, mother of the late Dr. James V. Brooks, born in Virginia, aged 81 years, 4 days died at the residence of her son-in-law, J.J. Koenig, in Mound City, Pulaski County, of heat and old age 16 Jul 1881, and was buried in Jonesboro Cemetery. (See also 6 Aug 1881, issue.) Child of Cal Ellis died 19 Jul 1881. Anna May Rendleman, daughter of Jerome F. and Silah Rendleman, age11 months, died 10 Jul 1881.
30 Jul 1881: J. Wilson Hunter, of Makanda, died in a train accident Tuesday (26 Jul 1881), and was buried in Stone Fort Cemetery. Mrs. William North, daughter of James Thetford, of Makanda, accidentally took corosive sublimate for calomel and died several days later. Her sister died a week earlier in the same way. (See also 20 Aug 1881, issue.) John W. Patterson, the 1868 murderer of James Clark in Missouri, was hanged last Friday (29 Jul 1881). Anthony Peeler, aged 67 years, died of injuries received when thrown from his runaway wagon at his residence at Dongola 25 Jul 1881. (See also 23 Jul 1881, issue.) The Rev. J.K. Tucker, formerly of Jonesboro, died at Nashville, Ill., of cholera morbus 26 Jul 1881. Only infant son of William Miller, of Springville, died.
6 Aug 1881: Infant Brown, of Cobden, died of cholera infantum. Child of John Brooks died at Cobden of cholera infantum. Leonidas Goodall, brother-in-law of Charles M. Willard and Walter H. Willard of Anna, born 28 Jul 1811, in Littleton, N.H., aged 70 years, fell from a load of hay and died in Kansas Saturday (23 Jul 1881). He moved from Canada to Kansas in 1856, then to Jonesboro, then back to Kansas.
13 Aug 1881: George Weiss, eldest son of Wilhelm Weiss, aged 18 years, 10 months 15 days, was run over by wagon hauling logs and paralyzed and died last Saturday (6 Aug 1881). (See also 28 May 1881, issue.) Francis Heater, son of R. Heater, aged 25 years, was murdered by John F. Cauble in a cornfield a few steps from Cauble’s residence in Alexander County. He was formerly engaged to Cauble’s wife nee Black, but the family thought them too young to marry. (See also 20 Aug 1881, issue.) Daughter of M.M. Chapman, aged 2 years, died of cholera infantum last week. Burns child died of cholera infantum last Saturday (6 Aug 1881). John Davis, of Missouri, formerly of Johnson County, died of heart disease last Saturday (6 Aug 1881).
20 Aug 1881: Mrs. Moses Enery died of heart disease last Sunday (14 Aug 1881). John Brown, aged 60 years, died of sunstroke at Cobden 13 Aug 1881. Adopted child of Mr. Tompkins, of Cobden, died 13 Aug 1881. Daughter of John Durham, aged 10 years, died.
27 Aug 1881: Eldest son of Mrs. McElhany, of Cobden, was buried 19 Aug 1881. W.C. Uffendill, of Cobden, died of enlargement of liver 20 Aug 1881. Infant son of George Cavancas, of Cobden, died of brain fever 21 Aug 1881. Oliver Edward Hunter, son of M.N. Hunter, aged 1 year, 6 months, of Mill Creek, died 21 Aug 1881. J. Nick Williford, son of Jesse W. Williford, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head last Tuesday at Anna and died at the residence of his uncle C.H. Williford in Jonesboro (23 Aug 1881). Mr. O. Joiner, of Dongola, aged 24 years, died 23 Aug 1881.
3 Sep 1881: Miss Viney Brown died of rheumatism at the residence of her nephew, T.J. Davidson, 26 Aug 1881, and was buried at Mill Creek. Serena J. Cauble, youngest child of Willis and Serena Cauble, died of membraneous croup 20 Aug 1881, and was buried in Casper Cemetery. John Aldridge died a few days ago from injuries received jumping off a moving train. (See also 27 Aug 1881, issue.) Mollie Dalton, “child of an abandoned woman named Dalton, aged 6 years, was whipped and kicked to death by 26-year-old Sam Hazel at the residence of Nancy Keller, six miles east (also as several miles southwest) of Dongola, 31 Aug 1881. He was captured at Poplar Bluff, Mo., in April 1882, tried and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Fearing a lynching, the sheriff smuggled him out of town in September 1882. 10 Sep 1881: Child of Lum Smith, of Alto Pass, aged 4-5 years, swallowed carbolic acid and died last Saturday (3 Sep 1881). John Scott Davidson, infant son of T.J. and Eunice Davidson, aged 10 months, died at Alto Pass 5 Sep 1881. Kohler child was buried in Cobden Catholic Cemetery last Saturday (3 Sep 1881). William Lookinbee, formerly of Union County, born North Carolina, aged 49 years, died at his residence near Midway, Miss., 18 Aug 1881.
17 Sep 1881: Pat Chisan died of an overdose of morphine given him by Phenis Butcher, a confirmed user of morphine, last Saturday (10 Sep 1881). Mrs. Rachel Karraker, widow of Daniel Karraker (who died 20 Jul 1861), mother of Wilson Karraker of Kansas, born Cabarrus Co., N.C., aged 86 years, 10 months, 9 days, died at the residence of her son near Dongola 10 Aug 1881. Rufus Peeler, aged about 48 years, died at residence near Wetaug, Pulaski County, 11 Sep 1881.
24 Sep 1881: Wilburn F. Walker, uncle of Evans Walker, of Chicago, aged over 75 years, died at his residence at Alto Pass 21 Sep 1881, and was buried in Norton Cemetery. Daughter of Mr. Philips, of Cobden, aged 10 years, died 19 Sep 1881, and was buried in Anna Cemetery.
1 Oct 1881: Wife of Simon Aden died at her residence at Dongola 24 Sep 1881.
15 Oct 1881: Jimmie E. Garner, son of E. and B. Garner, of Mill Creek, aged 2 years, 1 month, died 26 Sep 1881. Charles A. Ellis, son of James Ellis, aged 31 years, 1 month, 18 days, died at the residence of his father one and a half miles north of Anna 11 Oct 1881. His funeral was at Union (Casper) Church.
22 Oct 1881: Wife of A.T. Perry died at Cobden of billious remittent fever 18 Oct 1881. James W. Hughes, brother of Mrs. Thomas Phillips of Anna, was killed Monday by a fall. Her funeral was at Belleville.
29 Oct 1881: Infant son of William Wallace died at Cobden of cholera infantum 23 Oct 1881. Florence "Flo" Green, youngest daughter of Silas R. and Belle Green, born 29 Mar 1877, aged 4 years, 7 months, 26 days, died at her residence in Cobden of diptheria 23 Oct 1881. (See also 5 Nov 1881, issue.) Mary Olive Menees, daughter of J.T. Menees, aged 6 months, 17 days, died 19 Oct 1881. Leonard Hagler, of a few miles west of Alto Pass, aged about 50 years, died of heart disease Tuesday (25 Oct 1881).
5 Nov 1881: Only child of Monroe Gentry died of entero-colitis last week. Widow of Andrew Lilly, mother of the Rev. Riley Reed, died of paralysis. Lewis P. Holland, aged nearly 60 years, died of posterior spinal sclerosis, and was buried in Rhodes Cemetery. (See also 29 Oct 1881, and 26 Nov 1881, issues.) John Blaine Ussery, son of John Ussery, died 28 Oct 1881.

Mrs. Jacob Hunsaker died at Cobden 9 Nov 1881. Peter Gentle, husband of Elizabeth (Stroud) Gentle, born 3 Oct 1830, in Iredell Co., N.C., died at his residence in Dongola 3 Nov 1881. Fannie Richardson, youngest daughter of J.M. Richardson, died 9 Nov 1881. Henry West, son of A.J. West, aged 2 years, died 14 Nov 1881.

Mark L. Hughes, of Pulaski County, died of typhoid pneumonia 7 Dec 1881. Mary Schneider, daughter of Charles Schneider, aged 23 years, 7 months, 9 days, died last Monday (12 Dec 1881).
